“I think it has to do with powerlessness, and with the kind of hierarchy that kids endure every day, where these grown ups are not making sense, and the world doesn't make sense, and animals are basically suffering the same fate.” - Katherine ApplegateWhy do kids see themselves in animals? Children's media is full of stories from and about the perspective of animals. But why? Katherine Applegate has been exploring this question since she was a child, fascinated by the inner worlds of the animals around her. The answer she's come to is hope. Like animals, kids exist in a state of a lack of control over their own lives, which the adults around them essentially dictate. And the greatest antidote to that sense of powerlessness is hope. Teaching that is what she believes to be the true purpose of a children's author. However, holding onto hope can be challenging for kids as they face the harsh realities of our world, feeling powerless in the face of injustice, suffering, and even death. Stories play a crucial role in helping our children build resilience to face these hardships.Katherine Applegate is a prolific and celebrated author best known for the beloved “Animorphs” series, “Wishtree,” “Odder,” and, of course, her Newbery Medal-winning “The One and Only Ivan.” In this episode, she discusses the unique bond between kids and animals, including her early stint as a gerbil peddler!
"Books can be the perfect prescriptions to let us know that we're going to be okay.” - John SchuJohn Schu's entire life has been shaped by books. As a kid, he fell in love with Shel Silverstein; Emily Dickinson comforted him as he was battling an eating disorder, and “The One and Only Ivan,” well, that book changed his life. In fact, it nearly put him into debt (he tells that story in the episode!)The powerful impact books have had on his life inspired him to dedicate his life to sharing this power with everyone he can. His career as an educator led him to the library, the library led him across America, and now he has started a new career as a writer of stories himself.John made his debut with "This is a School," followed by "This is a Story" and "The Gift of Story." However, in his latest work, "Louder Than Hunger," he bravely delves into a new realm of vulnerability. This semi-autobiographical tale draws from the most challenging period in his life, navigating the depths of his battle with anorexia. In this episode, Mr. Schu, as in Mr.SchuReads, tells us about the transformative reads that shaped his life and explains how some of those stories helped him and some actually harmed him. There's no shortage of movies we've watched over the course of this podcast that involve Disney putting animals in harm's way. We are still pretty sure they killed at least one horse. But THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN portends a more benign future where Disney can make movies that star animals but without the need to for there to be actual animal performers. The downside is, they've finally hit that balance of making CGI animals look realistic while still being expressive, so stories about wild animals being kept in a strip mall and never seeing the sun are still super duper depressing.
Eric and Brie discuss the Disney+ film: One and Only Ivan. They also interview Richard Valentine. Richard was an extra on this film along with the National Geographic series: The Right Stuff.
Based on a true story, THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN is a live-action movie on Disney Plus about a gorilla named Ivan who performs at a shopping mall but longs to be in the wild. The circus is in trouble financially. One day, the owner, Mack, purchases a baby elephant named Ruby that he hopes can save the show. Later, Ivan makes a promise to a dying elephant named Stella that he will help free Ruby. It turns out that Ivan also wants freedom.
Mark Anthony Austin, the man behind the green mask as Boba Fett in Star Wars: A New Hope Special Edition, was born in the UK, Mark was always very much an artist. For his Bachelor of Arts Degree Mark animated a 10-minute short film entitled “Father” which was nominated for a BAFTA, going on to win numerous international awards. Mark then became a freelance artist/supervisor, working at such studios as MPC ("Goosebumps", "Jungle Book", “The One and Only Ivan”, “Goosebumps 2” and “Detective Pikachu”), Proof (“Star Trek Beyond”, “Predator”), BOSA (“Underworld 4D”, “Zombieland”, “How to Train Your Pet Dragon” and “Shrek” attractions) and Zoic Studios (“Final Fantasy XIV” commercials). Mark was made staff at MPC in January 2019, having supervised several previs and postvis shows. Work includes “Love And Monsters”, “Detective Pikachu”, “The One And Only Ivan”, “Men In Black International” and “Cruella”.
