(8) Timothy Ryback recounts how on January 30, 1933, Hitler is finally summoned to become Chancellor. The appointment hinges on a frantic, last-minute negotiation in Hindenburg's foyer with media mogul Alfred Hugenberg, who reluctantly joins the coalition after being cornered by Göring and Papen. Hugenberg immediately regrets the decision, realizing he has made the "biggest mistake" of his life. The resulting government photograph captures a stunned cabinet and an angry-looking Hitler. The era of political "hustling" ends as Hitler consolidates power, eventually murdering former rivals, including Strasser and Schleicher, during the 1934 Night of the Long Knives.1936?

On Hitler's side is Gregor Strasser, the gregarious "socialist" organizer who built the party's national infrastructure while Hitler provided the nationalist fanaticism. Opposing them is Kurt von Schleicher, a master political strategist and "puppet master" who views politics as "war by other means." He uses Franz von Papen, a handsome but less capable aristocrat, as his political tool. Additionally, Ernst Röhm leads the SA, a private army of 400,000 brown-shirted ruffians who militarized Germanstreets alongside rival political factions.1945 BERLIN

(6) Timothy Ryback explains that by early 1933, the Nazi Party faces financial ruin, owing an estimated 90 million marks, and continues to lose ground in state elections. To exploit this weakness, Chancellor Kurt von Schleicherattempts to split the NSDAP by negotiating secretly with Gregor Strasser. Schleicher hopes to peel away the party's moderate faction to form a working majority without Hitler. Strasser, believing he is saving the movement rather than betraying Hitler, considers a role as Vice Chancellor. Despite mounting debt and electoral setbacks, Hitler maintains a belligerent front, eventually declaring a minor vote in Lippe as a revival of party fortunes.1940

In our latest episode of As Told To: The Ghostwriting Podcast, we visit with the magazine's self-described "toonsome twosome," the cartooning team of Bizzy Coy and Lia Strasser, and discover what it takes to tap the talents of a like-minded soul to help you discover your best creative self.  "It was out of frustration that I reached out to Bizzy," reflects Lia, the illustrator of this dynamic duo. "I was struggling in the sense that I'd had these ideas that I thought were great and these drawings that I'd thought were great and I'd been submitting to the New Yorker for about a year and nothing was hitting, and a friend of mine suggested I find a writing partner, and of course my ego felt a little dented by that." "I think it took us maybe even a year to even establish, 'What is our creative dynamic?'" recalls Bizzy Coy, the humor writer of the pair. "And it's constantly changing." Lia is a cartoonist, graphic designer, and visual essayist whose work explores narrative illustration at the intersection of politics, culture, and personal history. For centuries, humans have sought to protect themselves from harmful air, whether from smoke, dust, vapors, or germs. This book offers the first history of respiratory masks—ranging from simple pieces of cloth to elaborate gas masks—and explores why they have sparked both hope and fear. 6. Continued Defeats, Financial Ruin, and Schleicher's Strategy. Timothy Ryback discusses how the Nazi party continued its decline, suffering losses in Thuringia and facing severe financial ruin, estimated to be 90 million Reichsmarks in debt. A desperate push for a majority in the small state of Lippe in January failed, though Hitler publicly declared it a triumph. Simultaneously, Chancellor Schleicher, the political mastermind, actively negotiated with Gregor Strasser. Schleicher aimed to break apart the NSDAP by detaching Strasser's socialist faction from Hitler's hardliners (Goebbels and Göring), thereby creating a stable, centrist coalition. Strasser was acting to save the National Socialist Movement through compromise, not to betray Hitler. 1933

2. Key Players in the Rise to Power. Timothy Ryback introduces core players in the 1932–1933 drama. Gregor Strasser was critical to the NSDAP, balancing Hitler's fanatic nationalism with a committed socialist agenda, functioning as a popular coalition builder. On the establishment side were Chancellor Papen and Minister of Defense Schleicher. Schleicher was the political mastermind and "key power broker." Papen was widely seen as Schleicher's unintelligent "puppet." Also prominent was Röhm, who led the SA (Brownshirts). The SA was a 400,000-man private army of stormtroopers used for fundraising and fighting communists in the militarized German streets. 1933

8. The Final Negotiations and Hitler's Appointment. Tim Ryback discusses how on January 30, 1933, Hitler required the support of media magnate Alfred Hugenberg (40 seats) to achieve the coalition necessary for Hindenburg to appoint him Chancellor. Hugenberg, who sought to be Minister of Economics, desperately opposed Hitler's primary demand: holding new Reichstag elections. Hugenberg knew elections would cost him his vital seats. After holding out until the final moment in a dramatic crisis outside Hindenburg's office, he was cornered and reluctantly agreed. Hindenburg formally appointed Hitler Chancellor at 9:40 AM. Hugenberg subsequently noted he had made "the biggest mistake of his life." Within 18 months, key antagonists Schleicher, Strasser, and Röhm were murdered. 1933 Retry
