When Oscar season rolls around, everyone's trying to catch up on the blockbuster films. But there's rarely buzz about the short films, especially the short documentary category. This year, two joyful California films made the nominee list. Nǎi Nai and Wài Pó is a love letter from Fremont-raised filmmaker Sean Wang to his two grandmothers, 94 year old Nǎi Nai and 83 year old Wài Pó. They are in-laws turned best friends who spend their days together, even sharing a bed. The Last Repair Shop tells the remarkable stories of the people behind the scenes who fix instruments for students learning music in LA Unified School district. Sasha Khokha talks to Sean Wang as well as Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot, the co-directors behind The Last Repair Shop, about their films.

Today's episode of the podcast is Part 2 of our Oscar Week coverage! This week I have four-time Oscar nominee Marshall Curry and Siqi Song! Marshall was on the show last year for his documentary short "A Night at the Garden" that was nominated for an Oscar and it was great to have him back on the show. While this is Siqi Song's first Oscar nomination, she was also part of the art department for the Oscar nominated animated film "Missing Link". It was great to talk with Marshall about the new venture into Live Action Shorts instead of the Documentaries that he's best known for, and hear about how his film "The Neighbors Window" came together. Siqi's film "Sister" was her final student film project that tells such a unique story of the One Child Law in China. She used an incredible form of stop motion animation using yarn to build all of her characters. I had such a great time talking to both of these Oscar nominees and can't want to see what happens this Sunday during the 92nd Academy Awards. Make sure to visit ShortsTV on the site below to be able to watch all of the Oscar Nominated Shorts or find them in a theater near you. Thanks, Marshall and Siqi! Enjoy the episode.
Mike and Christian breakdown the Oscar Nominated Shorts experience, touch too little on some good films, unpack Mike's Parasite experience and burn the house down. Plus, updates on The New Pope and all the beautiful people of Vatican City.
On today's episode the guys are joined by Rojas' brother and sister and come to you near the Avon Theater in Providence, Rhode Island to discuss the Live Action and Animated Short films from the 2020 Academy Awards. Which ones should you check out and which ones do we think will win? Plus the entire group hotly contests the merits of Greta Gerwig's latest film "Little Women." Is this a high quality movie worthy of our affection or is a hot pile of garbage! Only one way to find out: listen to the show!
