The countdown to the 97th Academy Awards is winding down, and props to both Kieran Culkin, presumed frontrunner for Supporting Actor, and the criminally snubbed Jesse Eisenberg, whose directing and own acting hit the mark. At least he got an Original Screenplay nod. Meanwhile, 2004's Garden State also has likeable but emotionally complicated protagonists and a quirky blend of eccentric comedy and a powerhouse of dramatic emotion. Plus, behind-the-scenes fun facts, poll results, interactive trivia, and listener shout-outs!
In this episode we discuss our picks for the major Oscar categories such as Adapted Screenplay, Original Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Picture. We debate potential winners, personal favorites, and possible surprises, analyzing performances from movies like ‘Anora', 'The Brutalist', 'A Complete Unknown', and more.

On episode 276 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, AW's Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade and Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello break down the 2025 BAFTA winners and give a preview and their predictions of next week's SAG Awards. A very spread-the-wealth year, BAFTA gave no film more than four wins, including a split Best Film and Best Director, with Conclave claiming the former and Brady Corbet the latter for The Brutalist, the two films to to earn those four BAFTAs. No real surprises in the Leading Actor (Adrien Brody), Supporting Actor (Kieran Culkin) and Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña) races but when Anora won the Casting award early on it was the bellwether for Mikey Madison's 'surprise' win for Leading Actress at the end of the night over Demi Moore (The Substance). A Real Pain's historically significant triumph over Anora in Original Screenplay also set up what will be one of the most competitive Oscar races on March 2 as winner voting ends tomorrow. We jump over to SAG, a conversation that mirrors BAFTA a bit, where we all feel strongly for three frontrunners and each make cases for Madison, Moore and the outside spoiler of a Cynthia Erivo. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h13m. We will be back next week to talk the results of the back-to-back Spirit Awards and SAG Awards and reveal our final Oscar predictions of the season. Till then, let's get into it. This week, we can't help but fall victim to la bella luna as Feb2ary Is For Lovers continues with a classic rom-com about how it's impossible not to cheat if you're Italian. It's 1987's Moonstruck, directed by Norman Jewison, written by John Patrick Shanley, and starring Cher, Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia, Olympia Dukakis, Danny Aiello, Julie Bovasso and John Mahoney. The story of a young woman who accidentally falls in love with her fiancé's brother, the movie exudes charm at every turn -- so much so that this little rom-com took home three Oscars in '88, for Cher and Dukakis's performances as well as Original Screenplay for Shanley's script that is funny without being rife with straight-up jokes. There are rich characters here, beset by curses and fatal strains of bad luck, who get laughs not by mugging or ripping one-line zingers but by believing in the seriousness of their tragedies so completely. This is character-driven comedy of the highest order, grounded by the Canadian coziness that Jewison can't help but leave all over the film. Plus: J Mo's got theatrical field reports on both Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Companion. If you'd like to watch the film before listening along to our discussion, it is one of the more widely available films we have ever covered as Moonstruck is currently streaming in Canada on Amazon Prime, Crave, Starz, Criterion Channel, Tubi and Hoopla at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Abigail, The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, Identity, Trap, Fargo, The Wedding Singer, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, Ocean's Eleven, L.A. Story, Paint, Napoleon Dynamite, ChiefsAholic: A Wolf in Chiefs Clothing, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, The Fabelmans, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Bicentennial Man, Bottoms and Punch-Drunk Love. Love Month continues next week with another VHS plucked from Hayley's collection as we'll be discussing 1996's Jerry Maguire with Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger, and will do our best not to get side-tracked discussing the Mission: Impossible franchise but can't promise we won't. Jerry Maguire is currently streaming north of the border on Crave, Starz and for free (with ads) on the CTV app. And of course we're closing out February with a rom-com canon selection, 10 Things I Hate About You. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

On episode 259 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello and AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer and Josh Parham to go back 10 years to take a look at the 87th Academy Awards, celebrating the films of 2014. Ten years ago, Hollywood's biggest night was won over by Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Birdman, a dramedy about a washed up actor trying to form a comeback away from the big screen and back on stage in New York City, and while doing this, also making sure he can keep him mind sane. The film was a critical, commercial success, though winning Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for Iñárritu that night has put a target on his back for not only beating films like Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel, but was the first of back to back years where the director found himself capturing Oscar gold. With these wins, it has become one of the most divisive years of the Oscars in recent memories, alongside a slew of other questionable winners and nominees inside a bountiful year of incredible cinema from the year 2014. A lot of Oscars from this year need to change hands, and the AW team is here to rewrite some Academy history. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 2014, briefly discuss talk about Birdman as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to three films to make up the final set of five nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 3h21m. We will be back next week to do discuss the latest film release, Blitz, and doing a character actor movie draft. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

In which the Mister and I check out MAY DECEMBER (2023), which we caught on Netflix. From director Todd Haynes and a script by Samy Burch and story by Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik, the film is loosely based on the Mary Kay Letourneau story from the 1990s. In this version, actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) is going to spend time with a couple who endured in spite of the scandal that their relationship created. Grace (Julianne Moore) first meets Joe when he is a 12 year old and proceeds to have a sexual relationship with him. She ends up in jail but when she gets out Joe is there and they marry. Years later, Elizabeth goes to shadow the family as she wants to get more insight into the players of this story. Joe is now an adult (played by Charles Melton) and over the period of time she is there and through Elizabeth's POV we get access to a small part of the story and the audience can infer many things from the scenes presented. Absolutely brilliant performances from the leads and a compelling story make this a worthwhile investment. This is an Original Screenplay nominee at the upcoming Oscars. This film clocks in at 1 h 57 m and is rated R. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Some might call Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar ascent an unlikely one, given the oddness at the core of his films. But with the Foreign Language Feature nomination for the explicit Dogtooth and the Original Screenplay for The Lobster, the Greek auteur cemented his status in the Oscar club. A victory lap of sorts came with The … Continue reading "254 – The Killing of a Sacred Deer"

Kenny and Mike discuss the and spot faith reflected in the Todd Field film Tar starring Best Actress nominee Cate Blanchett. Tar received an five Oscar Nominations for Best Picture, Actress, Director, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, and Editing. Lydia Tar is the first Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic and a force in the Classical music universe whose ego and appetite for power and control over others threatens to unravel all she has worked to acheive. Faith Spotted: Pride is antithetical to Christian teaching that as all people are children of God, one's life and the lives of others belong to God and therefore worthy of love, care, and respect. Matthew 22:34-37, Mark 12:28-34, Leviticus 19:9-18 As talent is a gift from God, it should be used to God's glory rather than to glorify and elevate oneself. All the work and training that develop talent are a part of one's responsibility to use the gift to the fullest potential. Power is the oxygen that feeds the flame of pride to destructive beliefs and practices. Scripture referencing pride: Proverbs 8:13, 16:18, Romans 12:16, ! Corinthians 13:4, Galatians 6:3, James 4:6-7. In contrast, the Fruits of the Spirit reflect and and draw one closer to God and deepen one's faith. Galatians 5:22-23

This follow-up talk provides additional information about Ayn Rand's choices in the 1944 screenplay regarding the order and contexts of scenes and includes scenes rendered visually with no dialogue. On Episode 6 of Road to The Oscars join David Long and special guest Craig Fields as they go head to head in a battle for the ages! The speculation is over, the precursors have happened and its time for the lads to lay their cards on the table and boy do they. David battles with heart vs head as Craig dives into the deep end with some outrageous and daring predictions. Who will win? All will be revealed come Oscars Sunday. The show begins with David and Craig predicting the 8 categories which won't be shown live as well as Craig paying homage to people and films he think deserved a nomination this year; none more so than Nic Cage. Once the pleasantries are over the battle begins. The First eight categories discussed are Best Original Score, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Documentary Short, Best Animated Short Film and Best Live Action Short. Both David and Craig state clearly that they believe that all 23 categories should be shown live and this is disrespectful to many of the creatives involved in the film making process. Do they agree on who will win? Absolutely not! After this history making Flee is discussed in the Best Documentary feature. Nominated in three categories; is this the one it can win? Craig and David debate. Then its onto the screenplay categories which look wide open and cause David a real headache! In Best Adapted Screenplay looks like a match race between CODA and The Power Of The Dog and this category will surely have a major impact on the Best Picture race. The Same can be said for Original Screenplay; can Belfast beat Licorice Pizza? Or will Don't look up spoil the party? Both David and Craig then pay respects to The Tragedy Of Macbeth in Best Cinematography but who do they think will win? The lads then discuss Best Costume Design, Best Director, Best Visual Effects and Best International Feature. All of these categories have strong betting favourites but will Craig play it safe? Of course not! Craig makes some outlandish predictions in 2 of these categories. It's then onto Best Original Song, a category that should be locked up but looks strangely open. David and Craig select different songs, but who will be right come Oscars Sunday?David sings the praises of The Mitchells Vs The Machines but will he stand by it or chose the betting favourite Encanto? It's then onto one of the hardest and most open categories of the night; Best Actress. Arguably any of the five nominees could win, but who do David and Craig pick? David struggles to decide. The show then moves onto Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor And Best Supporting Actor which looks much simpler to predict but this is the Oscars, you just never know. The Show concludes with the big one… Best Picture! Will it be The Power Of The Dog or will it be CODA? Or could Belfast cause a massive shock and take home the big prize? David and Craig make their predictions and it may not be what you expect.

In this ninth in a series of episodes leading up to Oscar night 2022, rewind to early 2007 when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences gave the Best Leading Actress prize to Helen Mirren for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and the Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor honors to Michael Arndt and Alan Arkin, respectively, for Little Miss Sunshine! Are there any parallels between The Queen and this year's nominee Kristen Stewart's take on Diana Spencer? Just how many cast and crew members of Little Miss Sunshine got their parents to fill in as extras? And what does Arnold Schwarzenegger have to do with it all? Spoiler-free plot setups, behind-the-scenes fun facts, listener shout-outs, trivia, and highlights of that year's Oscars ceremony in the feature "The Good, the Bad, and the Outrageous"!
Join David and not one but two special guests; Mike 1 and also Mike from the ‘Mike, Mike And Oscar Podcast' as they break down all the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. Every category is discussed and the nomination tallies are analysed. The Best Picture race still looks like a three headed monster but The Power Of The Dog leads the way with 12 nominations, with West Side Story and Belfast sitting behind with a tied seven nominations each. Denis Villeneuve was a shock snub in the directing category but his epic Dune showed a strong hand with a total of ten nominations. Perhaps one of the biggest shocks of nominations morning came in the Best Actress category as Lady Gaga was snubbed but Kristen Stewart made it in for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer. David and the two Mikes asses how and why this may have happened, was it snub power? Or did the Academy just hate House Of Gucci. Denzel Washington made the Oscars five after yet another snubbing from BAFTA; why did this happen? Both David and the two mikes have thoughts. The Supporting categories were also full of drama with Dame Judi Dench picking up a nomination for her supporting role in Sir Kenneth Branghs film Belfast. No Caitriona Balfe or Ruth Negga though. The Supporting Actor categories are also fascinating with Jesse Plemmons getting his first Oscar nomination. What does this mean for Kodi-Smitt McPhee? Cannibalisation?
