"A moment of calm in the late afternoon on Riva di Biasio in Venice, looking out at the the Grand Canal. The classic sounds of boat traffic cruising past that make Venice sound like no other city on Earth. A vaporetto (water taxi) passes by every so often, with church bells chiming as we head into the early evening." Recorded by Cities and Memory.

In Nagu, Finland, on a sunny Sunday afternoon looking out from the pier of the Archipelago Line route Turku–Själö–Nagu, day trippers with dogs and ice-creams, amble past others enjoying early suppers in the waterfront restaurants. On the water, all manner of motor launches, sail- and speedboats slide in and out of audible range whilst behind me, storm clouds gather and the south-westerly breeze stiffens. Recorded by Julian Weaver.
In the 'Healing Forest' around Paimio Sanatorium, Finland, Alvar and Aino Aalto's architectural masterpiece, a woodpecker works away near a babbling brook. The 'forest stillness' bristles with the activity of insects, birds, and power walkers. It's not long before the distant thrum of dirt bikes and other vehicles adds to the hubbub. There's no such thing as half-measures in Kid Koala land. Take, for example the recent release of Creatures of the Late-Afternoon. Most would be perfectly content to issue 20 tracks half as innovative and vibrant at this point in their career. Koala, on the other hand, created his own accompanying board game. For nearly 30 years, the Canadian DJ has pushed musical boundaries, fusing a broad range of genres together, with little regard for status quo. He's also elevated the work of others, from scores to films like Baby Driver and Scott Pilgrim, to influential projects like Deltron 3030, Lovage and Handsome Boy Modeling School. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Eric San, a.k.a. Kid Koala, on creating his own board game to accompany his new album “Creatures of the Late Afternoon,” why he made the switch from classical music to DJing, and how trying new things means you have to accept the possibility of failure. Possesom Paul and Igor Dobrovolskiy (26:42) on co-directing the new, first-of-its-kind ballet “Pisuwin,” the Wolastoq stories and themes that inspired it, and how they got the Juno-winning artist Jeremy Dutcher to compose the ballet's music. Jill Barber (42:02) on feeling like she lost momentum in her career during the pandemic, how creating a home for another person is often overlooked and underappreciated, and why on her new album, "Homemaker" she wanted to explore being a (you guessed it) homemaker.

"Hey, you! Come and gather round!" That's one of the lyrics from “Things Are Gonna Change,” Lealani's collaboration with Kid Koala on his new album, Creatures of the Late Afternoon. It's a song about coming together, about engaging with one another, sharing a common pursuit, and pushing toward something new and exciting. For both Kid Koala and Lealani, their work as artists—musical, visual, and otherwise—is always about gathering around: humans joining together, in shared experiences, creating something new. For decades, Kid Koala's ethos has been all about togetherness. When he first burst onto the scene back in the '90s, he was bringing people together on the dance floor. His astonishing skills as a turntablist could instantly spark dance parties, as he joyfully spun funk, ska, jazz, and spoken word records into something new altogether. In addition to that, Kid Koala's albums have always incorporated more to engage with, beyond the music: visual art, a hand-cranked cardboard turntable, a chess set, a graphic novel. His projects are often wildly ambitious—the Space Cadet Headphone Concert, an interactive Turntable Orchestra, a theatrical puppetry presentation. His latest album is a double LP that also happens to fold out into a playable board game. Among his many featured collaborators on Creatures of the Late Afternoon is Lealani, a young art-pop firebrand who's very different from Kid Koala, yet a kindred spirit in many ways. Each one is a creative polymath and DIY dynamo. He lives in Montreal; she's from Los Angeles, and there are decades between them, but artistically, they complement each other perfectly. And as we hear in this episode of Hidden Track, it turns out that these two one-of-a-kind artists can trace all kinds of surprising connections to one another. They have many adventures together coming up, including a big summer 2023 tour. However, their first-ever jaunt out on the road together saw them play Calgary's Block Heater festival back in February. The duo took time between their soundcheck and headlining show at Block Heater to come join us in CKUA's Calgary studios for a marvelous conversation. Between the ambient sounds of downtown Saturday night traffic, a band sound checking down the hall, and the wildly wide-ranging discussion, it almost felt like being inside a Kid Koala album. Threads From The National Tapestry: Stories From The American Civil War
About this episode: Just some fifteen miles south of Chattanooga - there in the northwest corner of Georgia - there runs a creek with a harsh name. Indeed, its Cherokee or Creek origin means “River of Death.” That name was never more appropriate than in mid-September 1863 when Union and Confederate armies fought as if the entire war hinged on its outcome. In the end, it may well have, for all the circumstances that flowed from the battle's outcome. This is the story of the second bloodiest day of the American Civil War. This is the story of the Battle of Chickamauga. ----more---- Some Characters Mentioned In This Episode: William Rosecrans Braxton Bragg Ambrose Burnside George H. Thomas Leonidas Polk James A. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways High-quality sleep is critical! Sleep is the foundation of mental health, cognitive health, and performanceViewing direct morning sunlight within 30-60 minutes of waking will help you fall asleep and stay asleep at night, and optimize cortisol & adenosine levelsLayer in multiple levers to be more alert: morning sunlight viewing, increasing body temperature, delaying caffeine, movement/exercise upon waking, light breakfastStack the deck to give your body predictable autonomic timing and properly set circadian rhythm to optimize sleep and wakefulness – even if you're tired, exercise a little (doesn't have to be intense) and eat a light breakfast, etc.Avoid overhead fluorescent light as much as possible between 10pm-4am – these lights will eliminate melatonin circulating in brain & body and will hinder ability to fall and stay asleep (instead, try soft lamps and dim screens as much as possible without straining eyes)Viewing afternoon sunlight from sunset can help offset some of the negative effects of light viewing in the evening (10 pm-4 am)Try to maintain a consistent sleep/wake schedule (+/- 1 hour) 7 days a week! When all else fails, try this sleep stack cocktail (buy single ingredient supplements so you can use what works, ditch what doesn't): magnesium threonate (145mg, 30-60 minutes before bed) + theanine (100-400mg, 30-60 minutes before bed) + apigenin (50mg, 30-60 minutes before bed)Sleep apnea can have very damaging effects on sleep and health – train nasal breathing with these methods: (1) use medical tape to tape mouth shut during sleep; (2) practice nasal breathing only during light exercise/cardio boutsRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn this episode, I describe a comprehensive toolkit consisting of behavioral and supplement-based tools that you can customize to enhance the quality, duration and impact of your sleep. This has an enormous positive impact on your overall health and daytime functioning, brain, hormones and immune system. Let's Parent on Purpose: Christian Parenting, Marriage, and Family Talk
A few years ago I began to craft my ideal week. While it never goes according to plan, the practice has radically increased my fruitfulness and decreased my stress. Today I share with you the benefits of crafting your ideal work week as well as the process for creating your own. Scheduling Your Ideal Work Week: First off, before beginning your schedule, take a few minutes to write out your long term goals for a fruitful and joy filled life. For me those would include: An ever-growing relationship with Jesus A body that is functional and not in chronic pain A mind that stays curious and sharp A deepening love and joy in my life and partnership with my wife Intentional time with my children and friends Joyful life with the church Faithful and fruitful work Next, write out a Monday-Sunday calendar. Break up the day into these 6 sections: Early Morning, Late Morning, Early Afternoon, Late Afternoon, Early Evening, Late Evening. Now, fill-in the absolute fixed points of your schedule that you don't control the time of. Next, fill in the time slots that are an investment in those long term goals you listed before starting your calendar. For instance, each Early Morning I have slotted a time that is called Morning Startup. This includes a time for a long walk and prayer time, reading the word, quickly journaling about yesterday, and my hygiene time. I know this time will also include helping get the kids ready for school. There's also a date night blocked, a family sabbath dinner, and a time for personal projects. Now, aim to block off chunks of 2-3 hour blocks for deep work or batched work (these are tasks that can be done much quicker if grouped together, like emails, chores, or phone calls). I've learned is that in a 40 hour work week, if I can get 12-15 hours of uninterrupted deep work, I can really thrive at completing all that's required of me besides the people interactions. So I block those deep work times in 3 hour chunks through the week. For more details, listen to the podcast! Additionally you might benefit from checking out Michael Hyatt's explanation in my resources mentioned section below. This is where I learned the practice.
