Electric bikes are exploding. Not literally—most of the time, anyway—but ebikes are certainly in demand. Companies that operate bikeshare networks are upgrading their ebike fleets as they try to entice more riders to join up. And attracted by a combination of sleek looks and dead-simple operation, more riders than ever are investing in personal ebikes—for commutes, for recreation, or as a practical replacement for the family car. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED editors Adrienne So and Julian Chokkattu join us to talk about Lyft's new ebike, urban mobility, and the ups and downs of owning your own electric bicycle. Ebikes are having a moment. Today's electric bikes are powerful, elegant, maneuverable, and, as battery technology improves, they're able to ride for miles and miles. For some people, they're even replacing cars. And as cycling has exploded in popularity during the pandemic, cities have reconfigured streets to better accommodate bikers. That, along with the rise of the ebike, could change how our roads are built and how we navigate through them. This week on Gadget Lab, fellow bike enthusiasts and WIRED product reviewers Adrienne So and Parker Hall come on the show to talk about ebikes and how we ride them. What would you do if you got divorced after 30 years? What would happen if you were diagnosed with cancer and the doctor told you that you had DAYS to live? At its root, we can all rise against the odds if we take responsibility for our lives and live in our purpose. Mindset is everything, and when we have nothing left to lose is when we find the strength and courage to keep fighting. In today’s episode, Sarah speaks with Dean and Bobbi Parker-Hall about how the struggles in their lives have led them to find infinite strength and the willpower to rise above what seemed like impossible odds. Bobbi Hall grew up in foster care and was lucky to make it out alive. After leaving a 30-year marriage, she finally decided to do something for herself. At 56 Bobbi’s transformation showed when she placed 2nd at her first bikini competition. From there, Bobbi continued to unlock her potential and founded Modern Bodies, a science-based program designed and infused with a mind, body, spirit approach for the modern woman that sees herself staying strong, sexy and active well into her later years. Dean Hall’s story began after he married his college sweetheart. After years of having a successful personal and professional life, Dean’s life flipped upside down after his wife passed away in less than two months after her diagnosis. Soon after, Dean was told that he had days to live after being diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia. After learning about his condition, Dean decided that he wasn’t going out without a fight. That is when Dean decided to leave a legacy for his daughter and became the first person in history to swim the entire 184 miles of the Willamette River in Oregon. After being told that his cancer was incurable, Dean is now cancer-free and inspires others to not give up and wholeheartedly pursue their passion. Both Bobbi and Dean talk about their journey, explain the importance of not letting your circumstances define you, and tell their story of how finding meaning in their life helped them to heal from trauma and reach new depths mentally, physically, and spiritually.   You can find out more about Bobbi Parker-Hall and Dean Hall by visiting them on: Instagram: @modernbodiesfitness -Bobbi Parker-Hall @swimminginmiracles - Dean Hall   or their website at www.bobbiparker-hall.com  www.swimminginmiracles.com   Book recommendations: Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl

Bobbi Parker-Hall (60) has been in fitness for over 25 years.  She is a Fitness coach, and more recently became a Yoga instructor.  Her epiphany about life, and aging came at the age of 56 she entered, and won the Over 50 Masters Bikini Competition.   Bobbi is a remarkable woman.  Now 60 years old she has launched Modern Bodies Fitness, an online transformative series that empowers women to embrace their age and believe in themselves and their dreams! Bobbi reminds us, "We are never too old to go after what we really want out of life. Sometimes we just don't get started until later!" For many women, (and men) moving into the 2nd half of life is a time filled with coping - filled with transitions from divorce to empty nest syndrome and menopause (andropause for men). It can feel like they're losing control. But, by seeing how they have the power over their own body they gain the confidence to take back their personal power in life. This episode is filled with personal truths about aging, and acceptance from two different perspectives.  At the end-of-the-day talking about the challenges of ageism in today's society while living in a pro-aging world, is a problem that is not going to go away any time soon unless we confront it and take action.   Another remarkable conversation about why we are Too Young To Be Old.

Navigate the Chaos: Strategies for Personal Growth and Professional Development

Today is January 30 and the Navigate the Chaos question to consider is: "Do you choose work that scares you?" College senior Parker Hall wrote to Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame stating “I can’t figure out what to do.” Rowe contradicted the “keep looking for the dream job” mantra and said: “Stop looking for the right career, and start looking for a job. Any job…And happiness does not come from a job. It comes from knowing what you truly value, and behaving in a way that’s consistent with those beliefs.” As Mary Tyler Moore said “Looking back on it, I realize that I have always chosen work that challenges me, because if I don’t go in to work a little scared, I don’t have any interest in it."
