Host Bryan DeNovellis continues his "Back to School" episodes on the campus of Rutgers University with Scarlet Knights Head Coach Steve Pikiell. After an offseason that saw the program lose DPOY Caleb McConnell to graduation and Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy to the Portal, Pikiell has brought in some key replacements with Noah Fernandes, Austin Williams and Top 50 Freshman, Gavin Griffiths. The results should produce a higher-temp and better shooting team.NOTE: This interview was recorded prior to the passing of Rutgers legend, Phil Sellers.
The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
September 18, 2023: Rutgers has quietly become a serious pest and threat to teams in the Big Ten. After spending years as the league doormat, the Scarlet Knights are not only a legitimate challenge each night but have become somewhat of a regular in the NCAA tournament. Steve Pikiell has done a masterful job in creating a real program at a university with virtually no basketball tradition. However, last year was bit of a weird year for the Knights as they looked assured to make the field of 68 when all of a sudden, the wheels came off as they dropped 6 of their last eight games. Worse yet, one of those was to Minnesota who had a KenPom profile of a middling team in the SWAC. Next year, Rutgers is poised to potentially get 2 of the top 5 high school recruits in the nation. This year, it might really struggle to recover and make it back into the NCAAs. The departures of Cam Spencer and Paul Mulcahy really put Pikiell and his team in a tough spot. They will have to hope that they can bring in enough scoring to overcome the loss of their two seasoned guards. Are you looking for Spartan gear? The NCAA transfer portal never stops, and another solid mid-major guard just became available in Boogie Coleman, who graduated from Ball State and will hit the portal. Coleman averaged 14 per game last year while shooting 35% from three, could he be a target for Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs?Speaking of transfers, reports indicate there is a transfer who is unhappy at his new home in the PNW. Most believe it is Paul Mulcahy, the former Rutgers point guard who went to Washington. Gonzaga was heavily involved in his recruitment previously, if he does re-enter the portal could he be a target once more?We close out the show discussing Mark Few's role as an assistant coach for Team USA and the pros and cons related to his role as Gonzaga's head coach.Discord Server: https://discord.gg/p8R3y5JFLink to national college basketball national podcast: https://linktr.ee/LockedOncbbhttps://linktr.ee/LockedOnZagsLocked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On this week's episode of CBB Central, Brad and Kevin dish on some college hoops odds and ends as the transfer portal dries up. They discuss an entertaining weekend at the EYBL Peach Jam, analyzing the explosion of Cooper Flagg, the excitement surrounding 2025 and 2026 talent like Cameron Boozer, AJ Dybantsa and Tyran Stokes. Next up is the latest on a bizarre saga at West Virginia, where Bob Huggins seems to believe he's still the coach? Meanwhile, players keep departing, leaving the Mountaineers with just nine scholarship players. Plus, a couple other commitments to touch on, including whether Paul Mulcahy makes Washington a tournament team and how the Ithiel Horton addition helps Rodney Terry and Texas.
West Virginia transfer Joe Toussaint and Rutgers transfer Paul Mulcahy both announced their new destinations on Independence Day. Toussaint chose Texas Tech over Kansas State and Pittsburgh while Mulcahy chose Washington over schools like Xavier and Notre Dame. The prevailing thought was that Toussaint would choose Kansas State and Jerome Tang, so the Red Raider selection came as a bit of a surprise. In other news, the Division I Council has proposed changing the transfer portal window from its current length of 60 days down to 30 days due to 60 being unnecessarily long. Host Isaac Schade hopes that the NCAA will both adopt the change AND adjust the starting day from the Monday after Selection Sunday to some point in the wake of the National Championship game.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
