Sisters Cory Varona-Corniel and Nicol Varona Cancelmo are the cofounders of OCOA, providing clean, natural, curly haircare products. In this episode I welcome the head coach of the men's soccer program at Seattle University, Nate Daligcon. Nate brings a ton of experience and a west coast perspective to the podcast. Hence, DeitschePunk aptly describes his approach to most things in the world of art and expression, as well as his aversion to all things mainstream. He firmly believes art is about telling the story, not selling the story. Please, buy him a sandwich.Steeped in classical traditions of performance, Adam studied dance since the age of 3, acting, music, and voice since middle school, began getting paid for acting (or what most other actors mistakenly call "professionally") around the age of 12, and went on to study theatre at Kutztown University back when they had a theatre department, RIP. After school Adam pursued his teaching certification in the Alba Method for emotional expression, and spent the next 12 years waiting for people to admit they have emotions. He's still waiting.From Columbine up to Covid, Adam performed in several bands in the Reading music scene from high school through college, worked with as many local theatre companies as would let him, and worked at too many college theatre programs right before their funding was cut. He has seen a lot of local art programs die.During Covid and since (just kidding, we're still in Covid), Adam was a member of the Pandemic Players PA, a frequent participant of the Bones Culture music collective (shout out Ben Oaks), and he also stumbled into home recording his music but will never call himself a producer. Guest Bio: Aniyia L. Williams '07 Arts & Architecture is a serial entrepreneur and inclusion advocate. She is a principle at the Omidyar Network after previously founding and serving as chief executive officer of Tinsel, executive director of Black and Brown Founders, and co-founding Zebras Unite. She previously held roles at Voxer and in the arts administration space. As an African-American woman in Silicon Valley, Williams is breaking down barriers for others now and in the future. She has also been featured in Forbes, Ebony, and many tech and fashion websites and publications; and speaks through the country on diversity in tech, fashion tech, and entrepreneurship/startups. I'm your host, Maureen Priest and joining me today is a multi talented woman.  She is Licensed Professional Counselor, Coach and Corporate Wellness Provider/Consultant.  Most recently, she has had the privilege of serving as a Life Management Specialist on site at Vanguard, where she developed and implemented their first mindfulness program.  Over the last thirteen years, she has provided mental health therapy in psychiatric institutions, offered outpatient/community mental health counseling, led psychoeducational groups and workshops on the campus of Gwynedd Mercy College, taught for the Psychology department of Penn State Berks, and provided mentorship and supervision for newer therapists.  In 2006, she founded Waking Wellness with a focus on mindfulness based strategies to manage stress, anxiety and depression.  The newest evolution of this practice is now EleutheriaU, a self-care for serious self-growth community. Rachelle has also studied Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Comprehensive Energy Psychology, The Bengston Method, Personal Life Coaching, as well as Yoga and Meditation for Anxiety and Depression. This episode features two librarians who have developed digital privacy toolkit they call Digital Shred. Sarah Hartman-Caverly is a reference and instruction librarian and Alexandria Chisholm is an assistant librarian, both at Penn State Berks. They both have a healthy interest in digital privacy, and they developed a series of workshops for students on managing one’s digital identity. Those workshops have spawned a website with a bounty of digital privacy resources for students and librarians and other educators. Gwen is passionate about BWIC and got involved when domestic violence became an issue in her family. Gwen learned that domestic violence can happen to anyone, anytime when her daughter was a young college student and the unthinkable happened. Gwen says a friend told her about BWIC and it was there that she and her daughter found the necessary resources to heal and begin anew. Gwen and her daughter will be part of a panel discussion at Penn State Berks on November 27 and the Celebration Of Peace at the DoubleTree on December 12. Gwen shares her story with Christine Gilfillan, Associate Director at Berks Women In Crisis.

Author Cameron Conaway is a triple threat. He writes. He teaches. He fights. The latter was literal several years ago when he stepped into the ring as a Mixed Martial Artist but now his battles are on the world stage, raising awareness for preventable diseases like malaria through poetry and prose. His latest book, Malaria, Poems, is born of that call to advocacy. NPR selected the book, which is “spliced” (his science-influenced word) with facts about malaria, as a “Best Books of 2014.”  In February, Newsweek published Cameron’s article, “A Working Malaria Vaccine that Can’t Get Money.” In the midst of touring for Malaria, Poems, teaching classes at Penn State Brandywine, and getting ready to travel overseas, I caught up with Cameron at a reading at Penn State Berks.In our interview which will be released on March 15, Cameron discusses the craft in his Newsweek article and in his poem, “Silence, Anopheles,” as well as what martial arts taught him about writing, how he broke into Newsweek, and whether a poet can retain his voice in prose. In this episode, I also talk about my obsession with McSweeney's Internet Tendency and in a new segment called Writer's Psych with Dr. Ike, I find out if it's healthy or not!
