Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Second Week of Advent Lectionary: 183The Saint of the day is Saint Damasus ISaint Damasus I's Story To his secretary Saint Jerome, Damasus was “an incomparable person, learned in the Scriptures, a virgin doctor of the virgin Church, who loved chastity and heard its praises with pleasure.” Damasus seldom heard such unrestrained praise. Internal political struggles, doctrinal heresies, uneasy relations with his fellow bishops and those of the Eastern Church marred the peace of his pontificate. The son of a Roman priest, possibly of Spanish extraction, Damasus started as a deacon in his father's church, and served as a priest in what later became the basilica of San Lorenzo in Rome. He served Pope Liberius (352-366) and followed him into exile. When Liberius died, Damasus was elected bishop of Rome; but a minority elected and consecrated another deacon, Ursinus, as pope. The controversy between Damasus and the antipope resulted in violent battles in two basilicas, scandalizing the bishops of Italy. At the synod that Damasus called on the occasion of his birthday, he asked them to approve his actions. The bishops' reply was curt: “We assembled for a birthday, not to condemn a man unheard.” Supporters of the antipope even managed to get Damasus accused of a grave crime—probably sexual—as late as A.D. 378. He had to clear himself before both a civil court and a Church synod. As pope, his lifestyle was simple in contrast to other ecclesiastics of Rome, and he was fierce in his denunciation of Arianism and other heresies. A misunderstanding of the Trinitarian terminology used by Rome threatened amicable relations with the Eastern Church, and Damasus was only moderately successful in dealing with that challenge. During his pontificate, Christianity was declared the official religion of the Roman state, and Latin became the principal liturgical language as part of the pope's reforms. His encouragement of Saint Jerome's biblical studies led to the Vulgate, the Latin translation of Scripture which 12 centuries later the Council of Trent declared to be “authentic in public readings, disputations, preaching.” Reflection The history of the papacy and the Church is inextricably mixed with the personal biography of Damasus. In a troubled and pivotal period of Church history, he stands forth as a zealous defender of the faith who knew when to be progressive and when to entrench. Damasus makes us aware of two qualities of good leadership: alertness to the promptings of the Spirit, and service. His struggles are a reminder that Jesus never promised his Rock protection from hurricane winds nor his followers immunity from difficulties. His only guarantee is final victory. Why is Endicott playing in the first round? Why is Ursinus? Why does Centre get a bye? Why does Salisbury have to face a 6 or 7 seed in its first game instead of a 9 or 10? When the teams are already identified and all boiled down to a number value by a mathematical equation, the bracket is all we can talk about, and go figure, sometimes decisions are still being made by geography. Sometimes the NPI ranking of a team doesn't match up with what the general Division III fandom thinks, or what our voters think. And it doesn't seem like we would learn anything from talking to the NCAA committee chair, so we decided instead to interview the algorithm. Or in this case, we talked to Logan Hansen about who the last teams in and first teams out were, how John Carroll and Mary Hardin-Baylor made their big jumps up the NPI ranking, and exactly how much of an impact the UW-River Falls win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday had -- it's more than you probably think. And it's way more insightful than most committee chair conversations, so we hope you agree. Plus, we chat with Linfield coach Joe Smith for Fast Five, about west coast D-III football, his team's two-quarterback system, and the Wildcats finally being able to put last season's loss to Whitworth in Week 11 behind them. And we take a number of your questions in our mailbag segment. The D3football.com

This past week, a number of teams had their shot. They had the opponent they wanted to play on the field in front of them. They generally even had that game at home, in front of their home fans. But in Week 8 of the 2024 Division III football season, it didn't really break as these teams hoped. Not for Ursinus, not for Coe, not for Case Western Reserve, not for Washington U. Not even for St. Olaf, if you want to dig down that far.  In the past, that would generally be it. A chance at reaching the Division III playoffs was going to be a stretch. But not anymore, not with 12 at-large teams, a 40-team bracket, and an NCAA Power Index rating system that just might save some of these teams. Who has hope? Patrick and Greg break it down with analysis, rather than overreaction.  Marietta made the Top 25 this week for the first time in program history, and Pioneers coach Andy Waddle sits down with us for Fast Five. This is a program that has come a long way, but still has its two biggest games of the regular season yet to come, and both are on the road.  Plus, Patrick and Greg hand out game balls. Patrick pulls out a highlight clip from 21 years ago, and yes, a number of clips from this past weekend. Plus we go through more highlights from Region 1 through Region 6, we answer a couple of reader questions in the mailbag, and Greg waxes poetic in On the Spot The D3football.com podcast is a weekly in-season podcast by Patrick Coleman and Greg Thomas, which was started in 2007. We had to wait an extra week longer than just about everyone else, but we are here to get you ready for Week 1 with our preview podcast. Patrick and Greg will talk about the big games nationally in this week's pod, but also about the biggest games in Region 1 all the way through Region 6.  Plus, as you may know, tech is going to play a bigger role in the 2024 Division III football season, and not just in the ways we've already talked about. In addition, the Centennial Conference is instituting replay review for its football games, and regardless of how well you think that might work with a typical Division III broadcast, we're here to tell you that yes, it's a good thing. Peter Gallagher, the head coach at Ursinus, joins us to talk about that and the challenges of competing in a league dominated by Johns Hopkins and Muhlenberg, as well as getting to learn a whole new set of teams from the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and more. We answer all the big questions, such as, why exactly did we not start with games this week? What's the best Twitter/X handle for a Division III football head coach? Who really really needs a W in Region 1? Who is going to take snaps for Aurora this week? (Nobody really knows that answer yet, actually.) What low-key big game is under the radar a bit in Region 3? Is Calvin actually favored in its first-ever Division III varsity football game? And is anyone not in the mix for the SCIAC title? Sometimes it's hard to get hold of coaches at this time of year, but we are super grateful to get two of them to take time out of their busy jobs and chat with us about how camp is going in their first head coaching jobs. Catechism Class: LD29, Q78 & 79, Transubstantiation. The doctrine of the Lord's Supper, (or Holy Communion) was a major issue at the time of the Reformation, and I suggest that it still is, even today. The Roman Catholic Church, (that church from which many of the reformers had been expelled, because of their objections to Catholic doctrine) - stressed what was to them, the vital importance of their sacramental masses. So for the reformers, and for our instructor in the catechism, the errors of Rome in regard to Holy Communion needed to be thoroughly dealt with, and Ursinus himself deals with the differences between the protestant, reformed teaching on the Lord's Supper and the Roman Mass, over three separate Lord's Days, 28-30. In Lord's Day 29 Q78: We are asked, Are then the bread and wine changed into the real body and blood of Christ? The answer is No! Just as the water of baptism is not changed into the blood of Christ and is not the washing away of sins itself but is simply God's sign and pledge so also the bread in the Lord's supper does not become the body of Christ itself, although it is called Christ's body in keeping with the nature and usage of sacraments. (Sacraments being signs that point us to the reality indicated by the sign). So in this episode we shall think about the Roman Catholic belief in TRANSUBSTANTIATION.READ THE NOTES HERE Hosted on Acast. Full Text of ReadingsThird Sunday of Advent Lectionary: 7The Saint of the day is Saint Damasus ISaint Damasus I's Story To his secretary Saint Jerome, Damasus was “an incomparable person, learned in the Scriptures, a virgin doctor of the virgin Church, who loved chastity and heard its praises with pleasure.” Damasus seldom heard such unrestrained praise. Catechism Class: LD17B Q45 Many Infallible ProofsIn this class, we continue to prepare ourselves to consider question 45 in the Heidelberg Catechism. In his commentary on this Lord's Day, Ursinus chooses to spend time establishing the historical factuality of the Resurrection of Jesus, before taking up the points made in the catechism itself, dealing with how the resurrection affects, impacts and blesses the believer. The catechism assumes we will already be assured of the importance and historicity of the event itself. We are following his example. In our last podcast, we looked at why a firm and confident belief in the Risen Saviour is essential, for our proclamation of the gospel, for our personal religion and for our eternal hope. So we need proof. We need to know that Jesus rose from the dead - for sure. Without any doubt. So let's spend this episode reminding ourselves of the classic proofs of the resurrection. It's a longer than usual episode, for I want to bring you as much biblical text as I can in a short podcast, and because of that, I'm splitting it into two parts. The online podcast will have a musical interlude. So let's see what Luke means in Acts 1:3, when he wrote, to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs…What WERE those infallible proofs?Read the NOTES HERE.Music: Psalm 13 courtesy of and with thanks to www.ThePsalmsSung.orgSRP Theme: "In Another Time" licensed from www.NeoSounds.com Hosted on Acast. The History of the Christian Church
