What good would a history podcast be without some sports history? Babe Ruth feels like he should be on the Mount Rushmore of sports history. Born in the Pigtown part of Baltimore, he defied the odds to become the most well-known baseball player of all time. He dazzled fans on the field, on the silver screen, and on every sports page in the country. His trade from the Red Sox also cursed the organization for the next 86 years. As a Yankee he was a pivotal part of many World Series contenders. He was the anchor of the famed Murderers Row batting line up. For all his success on the field, his life in the clubhouse and outside the stadium was more flawed than most people know. Join us as we get Historically High on Babe Ruth.Support the show

Brief summary of episode:Groundwork Kitchen, home of Paul's Place's culinary arts training program and restaurant located in Baltimore City's Pigtown community, celebrated the graduation of its first cohort of students on December 21st. This first cohort of students, who range in age from 18 years old to early-60s, participated in the free 12-week program and will now enter Baltimore's workforce. “We have watched the students grow tremendously over the last 12 weeks, gaining the skills needed to be successful in the culinary field while also building confidence and finding purpose and self-pride,” said William McLennan, executive director of Paul's Place. “This is really what the program is all about, building a workforce of skilled personnel while building up Baltimore.” Since the start of the program in October, the students have learned front-of-house and back-of-house skills from a dedicated staff including Training Chef Shavonya Bracken and Executive Chef Kimberly Triplett, and upon graduation, will have earned industry-recognized credentials.Program Director Ellen Levy oversees recruitment, case management services and job placement and retention services for the training program. “Paul's Place provides additional resources to participants post-graduation to ensure the students' success. Over the last few weeks, we've worked with them to help plot their next steps, targeting permanent employment in Baltimore's restaurants, hospitals and catering businesses.” Through the program, it is anticipated that Paul's Place will provide 122 jobs and nearly $12.2 million in annual economic activity to the City of Baltimore, according to an economic impact study by Sage Policy Group that the organization commissioned in 2018. To help get there, Paul's Place is actively recruiting for its next cohort, which will kick off in January.ABOUT Groundwork KitchenGroundwork Kitchen's program, operated by Paul's Place, is founded on the nationwide initiative of FareStart's Catalyst Kitchens, a proven model implemented in nearly 60 other facilities across the country. The program utilizes four integral program components:  culinary skills training, life skills training, hands-on experience, and individualized case management support and coaching throughout training, job placement, and for six months after students begin their post-graduate careers. The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture.Mentioned in this episodeGroundwork KitchenTo find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Stay in TouchNewsletter sign-upSupport my podcastShareable link to episode★ Support this podcast ★

Today on Midday,it's Midday on Politics, with a focus on local government.  Tom's guests today are three members of the Baltimore City Council: Phylicia Porter lives in Pigtown and represents the 10th district. Odette Ramos lives in Charles Village and represents the 14th District. Mark Conwaylives in North Guilford and represents the 4th District. They were all elected in 2020. They are part of a group of five freshman lawmakers who have been in office about 10 months. In 2016, the Council had eight new members. Two of them, Shannon Sneed and Leon Pinkett, chose not to run for re-election to their council seats, choosing instead to run in the primary for City Council President. Nick Mosby won that election. He is serving in that position for the first time. Comptroller Bill Henry and Mayor Brandon Scott were also elected to their offices for the first time. All of which is to say that of the 17 public officials elected to run City Hall, only two, Council Vice President Sharon Green Middleton and 11th district Councilman Eric Costello have served more than one term. Some would say that this infusion of new people brings fresh perspectives and new ideas to city government. Others worry that lack of experience in elective office might impede efforts to govern effectively. We welcome listener comments and questions for our three Council members. Councilman Conway joins us on our digital line. Councilwomen Ramos and Porterjoin us on Zoom. In her response to a question about help for renters struggling to pay their energy, water and rent bills during these difficult times, Councilwoman Ramos gave the phone number to reach the Baltimore City Community Action Partnership, a service of the City's Office of Children and Family Success. John and Rebecca get down and dirty with this episode about pigs. Find out where they came from, how they are immigrants to the USA and how it became our favorite meat globally.  We also cover the history of the Baltimore Neighborhood of Pigtown, find out some fun facts about the pig and hear a harrowing story from John's past that should be a cautionary tale about adolescence stupidity.  Thanks for listening! Back in the 1800’s, they literally herded pigs through the streets of Southwest Baltimore’s Washington Village, from the terminus of the B & O Railroad to the neighborhood’s meat packing plants and butcher shops. The nickname, ‘Pigtown,’ has stuck, but the industry is long gone from this part of the city. These days, the neighborhood is known for unemployment, homelessness, and drug addiction. The 1100 block of Ward Street stares these problems in the face and does everything it can to turn the tide. Paul’s Place Outreach Center is a beacon of hope on Ward Street, and in this episode we meet the folks who give and receive that hope on a daily basis.
