Well, dear listeners, here we go again.Like a brainless zombie emerging from the grave, a long-dead statue of Christopher Columbus has lurched back to life in order to reign terror on Washington DC.And as his statue's reanimated corpse claws its way up from the depths, it pauses momentarily to once again draw breath and utter…“It's a Me, Christopher Columbus!”If you don't know what I am referring to, dear listener, allow me to elucidate. On March 22, 2026, the Trump administration installed a 13-foot, one-ton marble replica of a Columbus statue on the White House grounds near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. This was not an entirely new monument. It was constructed in part from fragments of the same columbus statue that protesters toppled in Baltimore six years earlier before dumping it neatly into the city's Inner Harbor. That monument was one of many Columbus statues targeted during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement, as critics pointed to Columbus' role in the violence, exploitation, and devastation of Indigenous peoples in the Americas. The new, zombie statue was commissioned by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations and is part of the White House's celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary. According to the organization, artists recovered pieces of the original marble from the harbor and incorporated them into the reconstruction. After Baltimore officials declined to reinstall the monument (good on you Baltimore), the group turned to the White House to give it a new home. And of course, the usual gang of morons, war-criminals, and pedophiles that currently occupy the white house were more than happy to oblige.listener comments? Feedback? New funding is supporting efforts to help fossil fuel-dependent communities in our region adapt to other forms of energy. One of the projects will focus on the Four Corners region, including the Navajo Nation and Hopi Tribe. The Mountain West News Bureau's Kaleb Roedel has more. The work is part of an effort led by the nonprofit group Resources for the Future and partner universities. The Four Corners project is backed by about $70,000 and focuses on a Mountain West region long shaped by coal production and power plants and, lately, rising energy costs. Daniel Raimi helps lead the initiative. He says the focus is not simply on replacing fossil fuel jobs. “It doesn’t have to be solar or wind or geothermal or nuclear or anything else. There might be a great opportunity in aerospace, or there might be a great opportunity in some kind of medical sciences, or there might be a great opportunity in tourism.” He says it is about helping tribal communities build new economic paths — on their own terms. President Ronald Reagan speaking at the Christopher Columbus statue dedication at Baltimore's Inner Harbor on October 8, 1984. (Public domain) The Trump administration has placed a one-ton statue of controversial Italian explorer Christopher Columbus on White House grounds. KJZZ's Gabriel Pietrorazio has more. A national Italian American coalition gifted it to President Donald Trump. The towering 13-foot statue is actually a replica of one first presented by Ronald Reagan to the city of Baltimore. It was toppled by protesters in 2020, but never replaced. Italian-born Massimo Sommacampagna is part of the national group and president of the AZ Italian American Chamber of Commerce. He says they celebrate Columbus Day as an American civic holiday. “Not necessarily the individual and the atrocities that he's been known for in the past.” Especially against Native Americans. David Martinez is Akimel O'odham and runs ASU's Institute for Transborder Indigenous Nations. “I mean he bragged about abusing Indigenous women in his diaries.” He thinks erecting a statue of Columbus sends a strong message. “Then you're saying that all of the historical trauma that colonization inflicted on Indigenous people was worth it.” Meanwhile, Phoenix and cities across the country are moving swiftly to erase markers of Cesar Chavez, following allegations of rape and sexual abuse. Martinez believes Americans would feel differently about the Yuma-born labor rights icon if he came to prominence centuries prior. “If Chavez was 400 years ago, we’d probably be seeing a different reaction right now. More people would be inclined to preserve the historic symbolism of Chavez and ignore the criminal behavior.” Arizona lawmakers are looking to abolish a state holiday named after him. Tribal leaders are raising concerns about potential federal cuts that could impact services across Indian Country. The issue came up during a congressional hearing last week in Washington, D.C., on funding for tribal programs. During the hearing, Mark Macarro, president of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), says, “Just this week, we learned that the Bureau of Indian Affairs is planning significant cuts to staff critical in administering programs.” Leaders say those changes could delay funding and disrupt services tribal communities rely on. The second episode in the Building Local Power, The New Class series finds us talking to Baltimore City Councilman Zac Blanchard, who recently won a tight race to unseat his District 11's incumbent. Blanchard, a Marine vet and father of two young children, got his political start joining and eventually leading neighborhood associations. That experience, combined with his love for Baltimore, influenced his political philosophy and will guide him during his city council tenure. In this episode's wide-ranging conversation, Blanchard and host Danny Caine discuss Baltimore's challenges while also unpacking what makes Baltimore such a uniquely beautiful place. Blanchard shares his thoughts on the city's architecture and character and his journey to calling Baltimore home and eventually representing the key 11th District, which contains significant parts of Downtown and the iconic Inner Harbor. He also weighs in on the city's worst-in-the-nation heat island problem, driven by the presence of large trash incinerators within city limits. Other topics addressed include internet connectivity, highway removal, and the importance of bringing grocery stores to Baltimore's walkable neighborhoods. About this episode: Baltimore's iconic Inner Harbor is like a highway for massive ships. It's also been a dumping ground for chemicals and pollutants, and every time it rains, stormwater runoff brings sewage and trash from miles inland. But in 2010, a coalition announced the Healthy Harbor initiative—a plan to make Baltimore's famous waterfront swimmable and fishable by 2020. In June 2024, the city held its first public swim in the harbor in more than 40 years. It took nearly a decade and a half to pull it off—and some say, it's only the beginning. In this special episode of Public Health On Call, we look at four ways Baltimore activists, coalitions, agencies, scientists, and residents came together to fight for a swimmable and fishable harbor: getting people's attention, collecting data, mitigating sewage, and battling against trash. Host: Lindsay Smith Rogers, MA, is the producer of the Public Health On Call podcast, an editor for Expert Insights, and the director of content strategy for the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Baltimore City voters are set to have a say on the future of Harborplace by voting "yes" or "no" on Question F, which asks voters if they want to make amends to the city charter regarding the public park area at the Inner Harbor. Specifically, Question F asks if voters would allow multi-family housing and off-street parking in the space. Additionally, it asks if they would expand the area for development to 4.5 acres up from the current 3.2 acres, essentially taking McKeldin Plaza into Harborplace. Voting for the amendment will allow David Bramble and MCB Estate to move forward with their plans, which include building 900 apartments on the site of the Light Street Pavilion. Voting against Question F will send the designers back to the drawing board. We speak to Anirban Basu of The Innber Harbor Coalition, an opponent of Question F, and Jon Laria of the Campaign for Question F, who is a proponent of the ballot question. Earlier this week, Midday discussed another potentially consequential amendment on the ballot. Question H gives city voters the choice to shrink the size of the city council.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.
In this episode, we dive deep into the contentious debate surrounding Question F, a ballot measure intended to transform several acres of Inner Harbor public park into a commercial mixed-use development. The discussion kicks off with a judge's recent ruling that the measure is unconstitutional due to its confusing language, sparking a heated debate among advocates and critics alike.
For decades, the idea of swimming in Baltimore's Inner Harbor was unthinkable. Polluted, filled with trash, sewer runoff making it unsafe for human contact. But on a sunny day in June, dozens of Baltimoreans took the plunge into the harbor's waters, marking a dramatic turnaround in the city's aquatic history. Today, we'll dive deep into the harbor's transformation, meeting the visionary team that turned this dream into reality and learning the science behind the cleanup. We'll also hear the story of Katie Pumphrey - the first person to swim the 24 mile stretch from the Bay Bridge to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The neighborhoods surrounding the Inner Harbor are some of the fastest growing parts of Baltimore. Now the population of the harbor is growing with the addition of turtles, mallards, a pair of river otters and a school of Atlantic silverside fish — all members of the Chesapeake Bay's native ecosystem. The animals and sea life are drawn to the harbor by a new 10,000-square-foot “floating wetlands,” a series of artificial islands set up by the National Aquarium between piers 3 and 4. Charmaine Dahlenburg, the National Aquarium's Director of Field Conservation joins Midday to discuss the development of this ambitious harbor project.Email us at midday@wypr.org, tweet us: @MiddayWYPR, or call us at 410-662-8780.

Ultra marathon swimmer Katie Pumphrey is an accomplished athlete. She swam the English Channel twice, circumnavigated Manhattan and completed the DC Marathon Swim. And in June, she added to her impressive accomplishments in local waters. Pumphrey swam the 24-miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into Baltimore's Inner Harbor, a route no one else has completed before. She says her love for Baltimore energized her every stroke through the Patapsco River's waters. “I love this city so much,” Pumphrey told Baltimore Banner. “Baltimore should be proud of our city. I want more people to talk about how awesome it is. So, if my swim helps to highlight everything that the city is and has been and can be — I'm just honored.” Pumphrey joins Midday to talk about her momentous journey, and what it means to her to open water swim in her city's own backyard. This week's guest, Diana Zaheer, has been guiding people through their inner journey's for 30 years. Diana's healing work combines teachings and practices from many different traditions and cultures, and has a distinctive mothering style — as you'll see. Following in the footsteps of many of her teachers, Diana has done most of her work out of the public eye, supporting thousands of people through her virtual and in-person groups and sessions for individuals, couples, and families. But in response to the great need for support during the COVID pandemic, she began designing public teachings, including the spoken word musical collaboration with Lincoln Parish called Over the Counter Meditations. Baltimore is one of a dozen cities across the country that have re-instated youth curfews as a strategy to reduce crime. As the city discovered two weeks ago at the Brooklyn Homes, enforcing curfews is no easy matter. In what is likely the worst mass shooting in the city's history at a crowded block party, 11 girls and 9 boys under the age of 18 were injured. 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzales was killed, as was 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi. A few months ago, following a shooting at the Inner Harbor, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott announced his intention to enforce curfew laws that have long been on the books, but ignored. On June 29, a few days before the shooting in Brooklyn, Lakeidra Chavis and the Marshall Project published an article that surveyed curfew policies around the country, with a focus on the nascent stages of the initiative here in Baltimore. The Baltimore Banner, our news partner, published that reporting on its website as well. Lakeidra Chavis, a staff writer for the Marshall Project, joins Midday for an update.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
