When the ending isn't what you prayed for and the heartbreak feels heavy, peace might be the last thing you expect… and yet, somehow, it's what God offers in the middle of the wreckage. In this tender episode of Through the Fire, I'm sharing what it looked like to find peace after being released from Fire Academy—just weeks before graduation. The kind of peace that doesn't come because everything worked out… but because God was there, holding me in the heartbreak. If you're walking through a season that feels uncertain, painful, or unfinished—this one's for you. Because even when the story breaks, God's presence stays.
Through the Fire – Part 5 | Dreams, Dirt & Grace What do you do when you obey God, pour your heart into the journey, and the ending still doesn't look like what you hoped for? In this episode, I'm sharing the heartbreak of being released from Fire Academy just weeks before graduation—and the peace God gave me in the middle of it. This is a real look at unmet expectations, holy redirection, and the truth that even when the dream changes, God's faithfulness does not. If you're grieving an outcome you didn't choose, this one's for you. If you want to learn how to embrace the Dirt on your journey, come join me over on Substack at kawailani.substack.com

Through the Fire – Part 3 | Dreams, Dirt & Grace What do you do when you're doing everything right—surrendering, obeying, showing up—and still feel like you're falling apart? In Part 3 of the Through the Fire series, I'm sharing one of the lowest points in my Fire Academy journey. The moment I failed in front of everyone. The moment the whispers got loud—“You're not strong enough. You don't belong here. You're failing.” This episode is a raw look at the heaviness of discouragement, the lies that creep in during the middle of the fire, and the truth that pulled me through. Because even when the outcome doesn't look how we hoped, God is still present. Still refining. Still carrying us. If you're feeling tired, stuck, or like you've lost your way—this one is for you. If you want to learn how to embrace the Dirt on your journey, come join me over on Substack at kawailani.substack.com
Part 2: Obedience – Saying Yes When You Don't Know the End of the Story Saying yes to God sounds brave… until you're walking it out in the middle of exhaustion, uncertainty, and doubt. In Part 2 of Through the Fire, I'm sharing the real and raw moments of what obedience looked like for me—saying yes to Fire Academy without knowing the outcome, trusting God while juggling motherhood, training, and the constant feeling of “Am I doing the right thing?” Obedience isn't always pretty. It's rarely easy. But it's always worth it. Because when we say yes, God doesn't promise clarity—He promises presence. This episode is for the woman in the messy middle, the one who's following God but starting to question the path. If that's you, you're not alone—and I pray this reminder gives you strength for your next step. Welcome to a new Series... Through the Fire: Trusting God When the Outcome Breaks Your Heart This isn't just a story about Fire Academy. It's a series about what happens when you say yes to God—and then the story doesn't go the way you thought it would. Through the Fire is a deeply personal journey of surrender, obedience, disappointment, and the kind of growth that only happens when you're refined by the hard. Whether you're walking through uncertainty, facing your own unmet expectations, or just wondering what God is doing in the middle of your mess, this series is here to remind you: You're not alone. He's not done. And even when the outcome breaks your heart—God is still writing something beautiful. 45 years of combination experience. Retired Deputy Assistant Chief of the FDNY who has held many ranks within the organization including Chief of Fire Academy, Training & Safety. Currently Managing Director of the First Responder Center For Excellence which focuses on addressing crucial issues like firefighter cancer, mental health, and suicide. Frank started out as a volunteer Firefighter following after his brother. The FDNY was never on the radar but the individuals within the East Farmingdale Volunteer fire department changed his mindset when they would discuss different calls and aspects they experienced while on the job. And with that Frank applied at a young age, got on with the greatest Fire Department in the world and the rest was history. Frank attributes his success to the friends and mentors he surrounded himself with. One of my favorite quotes from Frank is “ You can fool the spectators but not the players.”

Today I sat down with Lt. Jay Walsh retired from 59 Engine on the FDNY. Lt. Walsh has over 40 years of experience in the Fire Service. He started as a teenager in the Newington Volley FD and then got hired by New Britain CT. Fire Dept where he was assigned to Engine 1 and also was one of the first firefighters to start the New Britain Rescue 1 Co. He later joined the FDNY , serving at 75 engine and 33 truck in the Bronx. He would eventually end up in 59 Engine as a LT., where he would eventually retire from in 2018. His knowledge and experience are second to none. And now he shares that knowledge, by teaching proby firefighters at the CT. Fire Academy. And he also shares his experiences as a career firefighter, from the volleys, rescuing a woman at a fire, 9/11 and time in the Harlem Zoo. In my opinion one of the best fire officers to have worn the uniform. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the interview.
Lieutenant Jason Leone started his career with the Baltimore City Fire Department in 2010 and is currently assigned to Rescue Company 1. Prior to promotion, he was a firefighter in Truck Co. 23 and an Emergency Vehicle Driver in Truck Companies 23 and 6. Jason is a member of the BCFD's Special Operations team and is an adjunct instructor at the Fire Academy. Jason is a former Captain Timmy Stackpole LUF Scholar recipient. This conversation you are about to hear was delivered during an online LUF Leadership Development Course to which Jason contributed. The final module of the course is dedicated to an examination of mission-oriented risk and resilience, specifically “what science, history, and experience” informs us about what happens when we compete to win and lose. Jason candidly reflects on his professional and personal journey following the Stricker Street fire which claimed the lives of Lieutenant Paul Butrim and Firefighters Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo in January 2022.
