This past weekend, Pittsburghers had a lot to celebrate. Easter, Passover, and of course, the other high holy day: 4/20. And we like to think that some of our state lawmakers got in on the fun too! A couple of representatives, including Pittsburgh rep. Emily Kinkead, wrote a new memo about how recreational cannabis could get legalized. This debate over legalization has come up over and over again here in Pennsylvania, so we're revisiting host Megan Harris' conversation with SpotlightPA reporters Ed Mahon and Stephen Caruso to figure out the political climate, the potential hurdles, and exactly how cannabis sales could even work. **This episode originally aired on January 27, 2025. Molly Rice & Rusty Thelin, co-founders of RealTime Arts in Pittsburgh talk about: The especially niche field of their work, which is the performance of live theater that aligns more with visual art and doesn't really check any of the ‘theater' boxes, and how they have interactive elements but don't confront the audience the way a lot of performance art does (they describe a “lot of conventions around theater… that contemporary audiences have trouble with…”); their series “People of Pittsburgh,” whose tagline is ‘Theatrical Portraits of Extraordinary Ordinary Pittsburghers;' the size of their audiences and how they're shows are often tailored to the neighborhood's they take place in, and how they make their performances as open to all as possible, with a ‘radical hospitality' option whenever possible; their hosting of Little Amal, the puppet of a Syrian refugee girl that travels the world doing performances amidst community and how their version added a play that incorporated a massive local crowd; their rock performance, ‘Angelmakers: Songs for Female Serial Killers,' which was a tight show, as compared with their more experimental and improvisatory shows, and how they got a much more mixed audience, including concert-goers to a rock concert, for that show. In the extended Full Patreon Bonus Episode, Molly & Rusty talk about: how they financially support their program, through a mix of fundraising, grants and occasional ticket sales; the gentrification that's happening in Pittsburgh, which they admit to being a part of, and moved there because they wanted to be somewhere they were needed, as artists, and was a perfect medium in between a big city and a small rural town; Pittsburgh's cohesive art/cultural community, which reminds Molly of 1990s Austin, TX, when she played in bands; how she consider their work multi-disciplinary, influenced both by site-specific work, and that they're descendants of the happenings of the ‘60s and ‘70s (including Claes Oldenburg and Robert Wilson); their current approach to social media (including looking into leaving Meta platforms); how connecting is a large part of success; and how they feel about connecting with the podcast's Open Call (the short answer is: ‘really good').

We always cite our sources: County pools put in a new chaperone policy as of this week — the director of Allegheny Parks said it's meant to create a safer environment. The city also implemented a chaperone policy at the Highland Park pool. Gov. And a local pizza place made it on a New York Times “best of” list, but not in the way you might think. It's a week of weird news! We always cite our sources: Mineo's made it onto a New York Times “best of” list. Pittsburgh City Council is considering a bill that would make medical marijuana patients a protected class. The state's medical marijuana law has a lot of gray area when it comes to employment protection. Pennsylvania has a new license plate and a lot of Pittsburghers think it's too Philly-centric when there are plenty of state symbols that could've been included instead. If you love the new design, you can sign up to receive the plate when it debuts next year (and if you're getting a vanity plate, just make sure it's not too raunchy). There's also the hellbender plate! City Council approved a fund to support festivals that were hurt by the pandemic, but it's not clear where the money will come from. And we're digging into the history of Pittsburgh's ties to the American flag ahead of Independence Day. We always cite our sources: Pittsburghers got scammed into buying tickets for a fake Biggie and 2Pac live orchestra concert and a fake hot air balloon festival. PIT officials are recommending that travelers get to the airport two and a half to three hours before their flights because the security lines have been extra long.  May was the busiest month the Pittsburgh airport has seen in 17 years – and nationwide, TSA recently broke their record for most travelers screened in a day.  Pittsburgh Public Schools is projected to deplete its fund balance by 2026, and is thinking about closing or consolidating some of its schools.
