PJ Hogan's 1994 classic, Muriel's Wedding, launched his own career, as well as those of Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths. But has Jen misremembered the Aussie comedy as a “feel-good” movie? Is Muriel/Marial/Muriel a likeable protagonist? And will Mick and Hannah ever stop laughing about an unzipped beanbag? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The moderate success of Confessions of a Shopaholic gave PJ Hogan enough creative wiggle room to go bananas again on his next movie. MENTAL is a clear return to form from a filmmaker who has decided he doesn't care to be embraced by the mainstream. Sadly, critics and audiences were happy to oblige, and this final PJ Party sits with a rotten 44% Tomatometer score, despite reuniting him with Toni Collette. PJ Hogan hasn't made a movie since 2012. That's more than ten years ago, guys - and maybe it's because people barely acknowledged the release of MENTAL. Did PJ's luck run out? If the world was a fair place, the Shopaholic Cinematic Universe would be at least six movies deep by now - all helmed by PJ Hogan and starring Isla Fisher. As it is, however, we must be satisfied with Hogan's single adaptation of CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC, which was a decent box office hit but was buried by critics. Welcome to the aughts, P-Bog! Shame about that box office. But seriously, it's impressive (and a similarity he shares with PJ Hogan) that people kept financing Peter Bogdanovich's films despite so many of them being flops. Sometimes you can't help but fail upwards. After the disastrous reception to Unconditional Love, PJ Hogan was somehow handed the keys to one of the most recognizable IPs in the world, and he was able to put his own quirky spin on the PETER PAN mythos. Regardless of whether anyone considers NOISES OFF a good or bad Peter Bogdanovich movie, it's ludicrous that it's not spoken about more often - and don't even get us started on the meager Rotten Tomatoes coverage. But then again, a movie adaptation about a play that is in itself about the staging of a play could be a little too meta for some audiences/critics. Still… Don't we all love Michael Caine? The release and reception of UNCONDITIONAL LOVE was akin to diving off a cliff after impressively free-soloing said cliff. The movie has its passionate defenders, so could it be that its failure was simply a reflection of a studio's botched handling of an unusual comedy? It's like PJ Hogan took all the complaints about him not being able to do anything but wedding-centric movies and set off to make his third film the most offbeat midlife crisis comedy of them all. Wait a minute, didn't we JUST do this? A wedding movie from Aussie director PJ Hogan? Perhaps the most shameless example of a filmmaker selling out as quickly as they could, MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING was a massive box office and critical success, so in a way you can't blame Hogan for going Hollywood. You can nitpick his sophomore effort to death, however, and that's exactly what this episode is about. Okay, let's get serious about this. Whether you think it's a little weird for PJ Hogan to follow his wedding-themed debut with another wedding movie, there's a lot to chew on when it comes to MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING. How do we feel about the film's moral stance? Does it embrace rom-com tropes more than it subverts them? Did Rupert Everett burn bright and fast while Dermot Mulroney played the long game? Is this the perfect example of why Julia Roberts reigned supreme once upon a time? The fresher they are, the harder they rot… or something along those lines. Peter Bogdanovich's amazing initial run of movies eventually had to hit a rough patch, and NICKELODEON is infamously known as the project that derailed his career almost for good. Welcome to our first PJ Party of the Summer: a wedding party! Aussie filmmaker PJ Hogan jumpstarted Toni Collette's career (and his own) with a cringy, depressing so-called comedy full of despicable characters and ABBA songs. Do you like ABBA? That could determine how you ultimately feel about MURIEL'S WEDDING. But there's more to PJ Hogan's feature film debut than its memorable soundtrack, and The Contrarians will get into it in this Real Talk segment. Does the comedy balance out the tragedy? On today's episode, we're leaving Porpoise Spit behind and picking up a shift or two at Videodrama, while I revisit an absolutely classic example of Australian cinema, Muriel's Wedding (1994). This movie was written and directed by PJ Hogan (who also directed My Best Friend's Wedding). This movie stars Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Hereditary, United States of Tara), Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, My Best Friend's Wedding, When We Rise), and Bill Hunter (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Strictly Ballroom)PJ Hogan has stated that this is the saddest comedy that you'll ever watch, and I'll at least confess that you'll have some strong feelings while watching this film. If you are at all a fan of any of the lead actors in this movie, do yourself a favor and RSVP to Muriel's Wedding!!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Welcome to Maryland Chatters, the new podcast from the nonprofit, nonpartisan journalists at Maryland Matters. Our first episode comes just before Election Day 2020 ― an election like no other. Voters are casting their ballots ― by mail and by dropbox ― like never before. Marylanders are turning out at early voting centers like never before. And, for some high-profile Republicans, they're navigating an election season like never before. This week, Maryland Chatters caught up with Michael Steele, former Maryland lieutenant governor and Republican National Committee chairman, who recently announced he was crossing party lines to endorse Joe Biden for president. In an interview with Maryland Matters' Bruce DePuyt, Steele explains his choice ― and the decision to go so public with his thoughts. He also reflects on his barrier-breaking election back in 2002 and his future political ambitions. We also hear from Patrick “PJ” Hogan, the Annapolis lobbyist and Democratic vice chair of the Maryland State Board of Elections. Reporter Bennett Leckrone talked to Hogan about the start of early voting in the state, his political transition from Republican state senator to Democratic state senator, and even the reason he'll never forget his wedding anniversary. Each episode of Maryland Chatters will also include political analysis by Maryland Matters Editor Josh Kurtz. This week, he talks with host Danielle E. Gaines about Gov. Larry Hogan's popularity in a new poll, as well as some post-election predictions.
This week we chat with Laurene Cooper-Fox about which of life's truths can be gleaned from the Australian movie classic-turned-musical - Muriel’s Wedding! The Sydney Morning Herald commented that: "Muriel's Wedding feels like the complete package: a beloved film seamlessly updated; a central character who retains all the ambiguities that made you root for her in the first place; a conspicuously inventive score peppered with classic pop hits, and a mainstage debut that will be talked about for years. Adapting his own screenplay to the stage and into the social media present, PJ Hogan's book amplifies the Cinderella aspects of Muriel's story without sacrificing the satirical and melancholic elements that gave the film its depth and heart."FIND MORE FROM LAURENE HERE:https://www.cfphotography.com.au/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel%27s_Wedding_(musical)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muriel%27s_Weddinghttps://www.australianstage.com.au/201903268934/reviews/melbourne/muriel-s-wedding-%E2%80%93-the-musical.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110598/https://music.apple.com/au/album/muriels-wedding-the-musical-the-original-cast-recording/1325404036https://open.spotify.com/album/5LvKQzozJQw1uURRtLhREOLike us on Facebook! The Lone Ranger (2013) was originally going to be made by Columbia after the success of The Mask Of Zorro. Eventually, Disney took it on - but with some sizeable problems. For Muriel's Wedding (1994), writer/director PJ Hogan had a fight and a half on his hands just to get the funding together. Stories of both are discussed in this episode. Muriel's Wedding the Musical, is a new and original Australian musical produced by Global Creatures (Moulin Rouge, King Kong, Strictly Ballroom) and it is a smash hit! The musical is based on the 1994 movie of the same name, the book is written by PJ Hogan (who wrote/directed the movie), with original lyrics and music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall. And yes, it has ABBA songs. I was thrilled to sit down and chat to Natalie Abbott (Muriel) and Stefanie Jones (Rhonda). These two ladies are stepping into the spotlight as lead performers and they are both simply stunning. In fact, Natalie makes her professional debut as Muriel and was nominated for her first Helpmann Award. This is a great interview, sharing stories behind the musical and Sydney filming locations from the original movie.
Join host Laura Turner and guest Jocelyn Moorhouse. Jocelyn was thrust into the international spotlight when her first feature film Proof became an overnight success. She was soon living her dream life in Hollywood with her husband PJ Hogan. But soon after the arrival of their second child that dream would begin to crumble and it would be 18 years before she made another film. Jocelyn's decision to care for her two autistic children was a brave one and she has written about her experience in her new book Unconditional Love. To see videos of our guests head to the Tobin Brothers Funerals Facebook page. Great Australian Lives is produced by Jane Nield.

Dearly beloved, we gather today to celebrate the union of a pretty woman, Ms. Julia Roberts, and a talented filmmaker, Mr. PJ Hogan. If anyone can show just cause why they should not be joined — well, that's too bad! It happened twenty years ago this month. In honor of wedding season, the hosts of WHEN WE WERE YOUNG share their childhood visions of holy matrimony before revisiting two nuptial-themed films by Aussie auteur PJ Hogan. First, we say "I do" to 1994's MURIEL'S WEDDING, a quirky drama that's not nearly as terrible as Muriel herself. Then we attend MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING, an unconventional 1997 rom-com that has our hosts thoroughly divided. Is Rupert Everett's scene-stealing George a dated stereotype, or a monumental achievement in queer representation in summer blockbusters? Is Julia Roberts playing a heinous sociopath... or a lovably heinous sociopath? Most importantly: will Jell-O always be bested by crème brûlée? Say a little prayer for us, because contrary to rom-com tradition, happy endings are not guaranteed on this podcast. When We Were Young is a podcast devoted to the most beloved pop culture of our formative years (roughly 1980-2000). Director P.J. Hogan joins host Robin Milling to talk about his new film Mental. It's a story that is so fantastic you can't make it up. P.J. tells Robin everything that happens in the film happened to him at 12, when his philandering father, up for re-election as mayor, picked up a hitchhiker named Shaz, played by Toni Collette to watch over his wild brood while his mom was 'on holiday' in a mental institution. Telling stories from his life is not new to the Australian filmmaker whose debut film Muriel's Wedding was all about his sister. P.J. says Mental is a comedy because laughter is the best medicine when you come from crazy. He tells Robin, 'As far as mental goes I'm in the trenches with it because my sister is schizophrenic, my brother is bipolar and I'm the father of two autistic children. So I live with it every day and that's why I made the film a comedy.' P.J. hopes that underneath the laughs there is a serious message that will come across about how to deal with mental illness whether or not it's personal to you and to re-examine what is normal.
