Ferdinand Waldo Demara held a lot of careers in his lifetime: he was a surgeon who successfully amputated a man's leg on a Canadian Naval ship, a Trappist monk, a prison warden, a pastor, and a professor of philosophy. How, you ask, could one man have mastered so many different skills? Well, he didn't. Demara was possibly the greatest conman the world has ever seen and was only found out when his photo was put in a newspaper article commending his good work. Sermon series: Stories of Change The Gospel reaches the business woman, it brings fulfillment to the deepest longings of the heart. When it reaches the slave girl, it brings freedom from oppressive forces. When it reaches the prison warden, it brings a joy unhinged from life's circumstances. And to all of them, the gospel makes all of them children of God and gives the gift of family. Preacher: Tan Huai Tze Date: 20 February 2022
My friend Rex Pryor grew up in a small northwestern Missouri town… you become aware of these roots very quickly when listening to his songs. We met through a mutual friend, the late Scott Ford, who tragically passed away New Year's Eve 2021. Although now retired from a storied career in corrections and law enforcement, Rex remains busy writing and performing music and serving on the Board of Directors of the Heartland Song Network, a Kansas non-profit dedicated to empowering the art of the song through education, collaboration and mentorship. Rex recently joined me on KKFI's Tasty Brew Music Radio Show to feature songs and stories from the Exit 13 Duo new release “Flatlands.” As is the case with many songwriters in the Heartland, Rex is self-taught on the guitar (he picked it up at the age of 45). He really is enjoying leading a lyrical life in the Heartland performing as a solo, as a duo with his nephew and with his Band, Exit 13. Enjoy this conversation with Rex Pryor about music education, collaboration and travelling the Flatlands!

Tracy Coenen of Sequence Inc, a Chicago-based forensic accounting specialty firm, joined us for this episode of Where Accountants Go, the Accounting Careers Podcast. Tracy always knew she wanted to be involved with investigations and the criminal justice system. In fact, early in her life she dreamed of being a Prison Warden! However, after taking a class in financial crime investigation, she realized that she enjoyed the analysis that comes with such an investigation, and decided to pursue a career investigating financial crimes. She continued with her Criminology major in school, but also got her MBA with enough hours to sit for the CPA exam. She passed the exam, spent a short time at Arthur Andersen, then a few years at a small forensic accounting firm, and then decided to launch her own business – Sequence Inc. For the past 20 years, Tracy has operated her company basically as a solo entrepreneur, with the exception of a short time earlier on that she talks about in the interview. She chooses to keep the firm small from a team standpoint because it allows her to focus on the activities that she most enjoys – digging into the details and doing the investigation itself. Another valuable portion of this episode is our discussion of what it takes to be a good expert witness in trials. Tracy has well-developed skills in that area, and shares some of her insights into that role in this interview. It's definitely something you don't want to miss. Critically acclaimed author and retired prison warden James Le'Etoile stepped into the Interrogation Room, just to clear up a few things. James's crime fiction has been recognized by the Creative World Awards, Acclaim Film, and the Scriptapalooza Television Script Competition. BURY THE PAST was a 2018 Killer Nashville Silver Falchion Award finalist for Best Procedural of the Year. After working in probation, parole, investigations, hostage negotiations, and prison operations, James retired as a DOC warden and uses his decades of experience to fuel gritty crime stories with themes such as human trafficking, black market organ transplants, homelessness, and domestic terrorism. In this episode, James spoke with host Gavin Reese about the realities of prison life on both sides of the bars, balancing authenticity in his writing, and how the carvings of death row inmates predict the future. Prison Warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary. His steadfast rejection of a “lock ‘em up and throw away the key” mentality can be seen in the progressive, compassionate programs and sound correctional procedures he has implemented. The hallmark of his remarkable administration is his relentless efforts to help each inmate discover value and purpose in his life, to experience true freedom of the soul. His story is a story of hope and transformation in America's bloodiest prison. He is the subject of the book Cain's Redemption.
Today's 30 minute podcast reviews an recent article by Kim Lincoln of Village Soup's Rockland Herald Gazette on the interim results of an investigation by OPEGA, Maine's Office of Program Evaluation & Government Accountability, into the wrongdoings of Maine state prison officials, including Warden Jeffery Merrill and assistant corrections commissioner Denise Lord. Interlaced with a few choice excerpts of Jimi Hendrix music Regrettably, the Legislature voted a few days ago to terminate the OPEGA investigation and leave it up to Maine Department of Corrections to investigate themselves. In their words: "...allow the Department of Corrections to address these questions in continuing the cultural change work it has initiated in a more deliberate, coordinated and accelerated fashion. OPEGA, the Government Oversite Committee and/or the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee would receive periodic updates from the Department on the status of its cultural change efforts and the results achieved. In this way, the Department would be held accountable to pursue necessary change." Uh huh. 'held accountable'? Magnusson, Merill and Lord must have laughed all the way back to their prison fastness.
