It's time to reflect on our recent re-read of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! Join Andrew, Eric, Micah, and Laura as they open the MuggleMail bag once more to tackle an array of voicemails, e-mails and chicken soup submissions following our recent excursion into Book 3's Chapter-By-Chapter. The MuggleCast 2023 Listener Survey is HERE and is open to all listeners through October 6th! We want to know what you love about the show, what you think could improve it, and what other content you'd be interested in us making. Check out Parts 1 and 2 of Belated Binge Podcast's "Harry Potter: A History" and "Harry Potter: A Fandom" series with Eric! We begin our Book 3 wrap-up by revisiting our 7 Word Summaries and voting on which one should get a re-do! 7-Word Summary of Book 3: Sirius prevails over Ministry officials and Snape Voicemails include: Is there a connection between the Deathly Hallows and the gifts Harry receives from the Dursleys? Does the prophecy's existence explain why Snape picks on Neville? Is there another reason why Voldemort doesn't have hair? Lupin's werewolf depiction may be referenced elsewhere, and the phases of the moon are more gradual than you may think! A listener writes in about Micah's criticism of Time-Turning. Why are Lupin's lesson plans so creature-centric? Is there a reason behind the many strained paternal relationships in HP? Would Veritaserum help crack a Fidelius Charm? And, is being someone's Godfather a special magical bond? Listeners also point out: McGonagall's anti-Divination stance goes back to Book One. And, how does Professor Binns grade papers? One 13-year-old listener made her parents detour around Mount Greylock (we 100% support this). Quizzitch: Who found the Riddle family dead? Next week: Goblet of Fire movie commentary! The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom

In this episode, we discuss the best classes in Hogwarts. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:·      2:08 #8 Divination. What a surprise. Divination is a very specific skill that a very small amount of people can really use. Even true seers don't have too many visions. Trelawney had about three in her entire life. Plus, she has a flair for the dramatic. Most of her class is spent predicting the death of Harry, which might be another reason why he doesn't like it very much. Harry knows his time is somewhat limited, but it is unsettling for someone who can see the future tell you that death is in the future. Harry also doesn't like how divination is opening the gap between him and Voldemort wider.·      8:38 #7 History of Magic. History is a fascinating topic and magical history is even better, but Professor Binns makes the subject as dull as it could be. It is almost useless. If Binns put in the effort, there might be something there. But he doesn't. ·      13:05 #6 Astronomy. Though this is still not a great class, it is a bit better than the others on this list. Wizards can use the planets for more than just understanding more about science, however. Centaurs use the night sky to tell the future, which they did with one glance at Mars better than Trelawney did in all her years at Hogwarts.·      17:28 #5 Transfiguration. It might seem low on this list, but transfiguration isn't ever the center of magic ever in the story. It is a very specific kind of magic that can't be applied to other areas of magic. That is also a plus, because in those moments where you need something specific, transfiguration might be the subject to use.·      20:22 #4/Honorable Mention Herbology. Herbology is a slept-on subject that fades into the background which is why not a lot of people think about it. However, understanding plants is a very important part of all branches of magic and supports the areas that would otherwise collapse. ·      21:53 #3 Potions. Potions are extremely powerful and has a wide range of skills. With the right potions, any battle can be won. However, there several drawbacks. They have to be prepared in advance, so you can't just use an infinite supply. They also can wear off. Despite this, potions is still high on the list.·      24:30 #2 Defense Against the Dark Arts. This is a fantastic class, even though there are some factors that change this. If there is no war, it isn't as important. Also, if the teacher changes ever single year, it's hard to get a well-rounded education. But even with all those reasons, DADA is still one of the most useful classes in Hogwarts.·      28:06 #1 Charms. Charms is fantastic! All you need is a wand, it is fast, useful, and covers a wide range of subjects. The vast majority of spells that Harry uses in the story is learned in charms. There is also no cool down or preparation time before hand. They can also be very powerful, helping anyone with a good knowledge of charms class in a pinch.Having anything you want to hear or say? Potter Revisited Episode #27 Whodunnit? AKA Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 9 "The Writing On The Wall" Tori adopted a little black cat Nimbus - see our instagram for pictures! Shay also has a dog named Nimbus  Both Tori and Shay understand Filch's grief and anger over something terrible happening to his pet  Did Filch really think Harry could have done this to Mrs Norris?  How many times can we butcher saying "Mrs Norris" this episode? Shay finds it interesting that McGonagall and Snape go with Dumbledore while Flitwick and Sprout stay behind Was McGonagall friends with Mrs Norris in her cat form?  Why does Snape have a smile when seeing Mrs Norris? Shay lists some potential reasons +1 Snape Sucks count for Snape trying to get Harry in trouble despite their being no way Harry could have petrified Mrs Norris Why didn't Harry tell the truth about hearing something? Was it really that big of a deal? We get the Founders backstory and discuss it's lore and how Slytherin's fears could have been dealt with  The Trio is the Scooby Gang - immediately looking for clues once alone at the scene of the crime Ron's spider phobia is very relatable and it is such a testament to his character on how much he faces it throughout this novel **SH Trigger** Myrtle references going to the washroom to kill herself, and it is kind of played for laughs both in the book and in the movie - it feels like a pretty big red flag  Is Ginny aware of what is happening to her yet, and if it is the diary? Was Madam Pince asked to remove copies of Hogwarts a History off the shelves to prevent students reading up on it? We discuss the Ghost Teacher, Professor Binns - is he actually a good teacher?  Is Hermione wanting to break the rules for the plan because it involves people like her?  Why is the school so quick to jump to Harry being the culprit?  Shay discusses the possible suspects for the heir of Slytherin (as if we don't know the ending) Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us:  Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

"That does sound like the sort of thing I would do, doesn't it?" It was breakfast time on Friday morning. Harry took another huge bite out of his toast and then tried to remind his brain that scarfing his breakfast wouldn't actually get him into the dungeons any faster. Anyway they had a full hour of study time between breakfast and the start of Potions. But dungeons! In Hogwarts! Harry's imagination was already sketching the chasms, narrow bridges, torchlit sconces, and patches of glowing moss. Would there be rats? Would there be dragons? "Harry Potter," said a quiet voice from behind him. Harry looked over his shoulder and found himself beholding Ernie Macmillan, smartly dressed in yellow-trimmed robes and looking a little worried. "Neville thought I should warn you," Ernie said in a low voice. "I think he's right. Be careful of the Potions Master in our session today. The older Hufflepuffs told us that Professor Snape can be really nasty to people he doesn't like, and he doesn't like most people who aren't Slytherins. If you say anything smart to him it... it could be really bad for you, from what I've heard. Just keep your head down and don't give him any reason to notice you." There was a pause as Harry processed this, and then he lifted his eyebrows. (Harry wished he could raise just one eyebrow, like Spock, but he'd never been able to manage.) "Thanks," Harry said. "You might've just saved me a lot of trouble." Ernie nodded, and turned to go back to the Hufflepuff table. Harry resumed eating his toast. It was around four bites afterward that someone said "Pardon me," and Harry turned around to see an older Ravenclaw, looking a little worried - Some time later, Harry was finishing up his third plate of rashers. (He'd learned to eat heavily at breakfast. He could always eat lightly at lunch if he didn't end up using the Time-Turner.) And there was yet another voice from behind him saying "Harry?" "Yes," Harry said wearily, "I'll try not to draw Professor Snape's attention -" "Oh, that's hopeless," said Fred. "Completely hopeless," said George. "So we had the house elves bake you a cake," said Fred. "We're going to put one candle on it for every point you lose for Ravenclaw," said George. "And have a party for you at the Gryffindor table during lunch," said Fred. "We hope that'll cheer you up afterward," finished George. Harry swallowed his last bite of rasher and turned around. "All right," said Harry. "I wasn't going to ask this after Professor Binns, I really wasn't, but if Professor Snape is that awful why hasn't he been fired?" "Fired?" said Fred. "You mean, let go?" said George. "Yes," Harry said. "It's what you do to bad teachers. You fire them. Then you hire a better teacher instead. You don't have unions or tenure here, right?" Fred and George were frowning in much the same way that hunter-gatherer tribal elders might frown if you tried to tell them about calculus. "I don't know," said Fred after a while. "I never thought about that." "Me neither," said George. "Yeah," said Harry, "I get that a lot. See you at lunch, guys, and don't blame me if there aren't any candles on that cake." Fred and George both laughed, as if Harry had said something funny, and bowed to him and headed back toward Gryffindor. Harry turned back to the breakfast table and grabbed a cupcake. His stomach already felt full, but he had a feeling this morning might use a lot of calories. As he ate his cupcake, Harry thought of the worst teacher he'd met so far, Professor Binns of History. Professor Binns was a ghost. From what Hermione had said about ghosts, it didn't seem likely that they were fully self-aware. ...

Such an easy word to say, but an almost impossible response to give. Most of us are willing to bend over backwards to have to avoid turning someone down (and to avoid to resulting guilt when we do). Licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and columnist, Jonathan Alpert is here to discuss why we find it so hard to say no, strategies to do so effectively, and why we shouldn't feel guilty for turning someone down.   Tipping 101 (0:22:34) You've just enjoyed your baby back ribs at Chili's in a booth 20 feet away from everyone else. Your check comes and you're just not sure how much to tip your server. There are a million things to consider. From salons to Ubers to restaurants, how do we know how much to tip for different services? We've asked Liz Frazier, a family financial planner and friend of The Lisa Show, to give us her best tips on tipping.   A COVID-19 Barbecue (0:37:37) You're a good citizen. You wear a mask at the grocery store and you've spent more time at home than ever before. But if you're like the rest of us, you're ready to do something fun. It's natural to want to do those normal summer activities like host a BBQ or gather all the neighbor kids together to slip n' slide and eat popsicles. But is there a way to have fun in the sun with our friends while being cautious, socially distant, and safe? Friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes, says yes! There is a way. Carrie Ann is with us today to share how we can throw a COVID safe summer party.   Children's Media (0:52:47) The effects of media are real. From the earliest war propaganda to today's latest Play Station 4, media has been shaping our decisions and opinions for a long time. But of greater concern is how it impacts our children's developing minds. If you're a parent, at some point you've probably worried about what your kid is watching, whether it's because of violent content or too many hours of screen time. So, what are the dangerous effects we should be aware of as parents... and what media is harmless? Here to tell us more about when we should be pulling our hair out with worry and when we should take a step back when it comes to our kids' media consumption is Sara DeWitt, kids media expert and Vice President of PBS Kids Digital.   Show Me History (1:12:13) TV, movies, and even real life portray history as boring and dull. We see this in Harry Potter with the History of Magic class and Professor Binns going on and on while the students fall asleep. We see it in Ferris Bueller's Day Off when a history teacher is trying to get his students' attention, but they're all napping. It's easy to think of boring history classes and dusty old books full of information that hardly anyone cares about. But it's important for us to learn about our past so we can improve our future. So how can we make history more fun to learn about? Mark Shulman is a writer who challenges the idea that history is dull. He is the author of the “Show Me History!” books. He writes about history through cartoons that keep readers captivated. We wanted to learn more about history through his eyes and understand how he makes it so interesting. We've invited him onto the show today to show us some history.   Deep Cleaning Your Fridge and Pantry (1:28:52) You know that moment when you open the fridge and you get slammed with a horrible smell? Your first instinct is to close the door, but you also know you have to find the source of the odor, or it will only get worse. Finding the smell, and then cleaning out the rest of your fridge is rarely a positive experience as you find empty salad dressing bottles, soggy spinach, and who knows what's in that Tupperware container hiding in the back. But it's so satisfying when you have your fridge clean and smelling good again. So, we invited expert and owner of Go Clean Co, Sarah McAllister, on the show to give us her tips for cleaning your fridge and pantry.

Turn to Page 140, The Writing on the Wall. Today’s lesson is called The Whispers on the Wind. The chapter begins with Draco’s cruel words bringing more attention to the writing on the wall. Filch arrives and sees Mrs. Norris frozen, and accuses Harry as Dumbledore arrives, because Harry saw that Filch was a squib. Dumbledore calms Filch slightly, while taking Harry, Ron and Hermione to Lockhart’s nearby office to talk. The three claim they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Snape intimates that their absence from the feast and trajectory away from the Great Hall belie their guilt. Dumbledore declares that Mrs. Norris is not dead, but petrified, and that they will work on a restoration potion. Later, Hermione tells Ron and Harry that she wants to find out about the Chamber of Secrets, but cannot remember what was written about it in Hogwarts, a History. She turns instead to Professor Binns, the ghost who teaches History of Magic. He tells the class about the legend that Slytherin created a secret chamber that could only be opened by his heir, who would continue his mission of pure blood supremacy at Hogwarts. Harry suspects his classmates think he is the heir, and Ginny is particularly upset about the entire situation. Finally, our trio settle on trying to interrogate Malfoy to learn what he knows, and if he is the true heir. Hermione suggests they attempt the Polyjuice Potion, to trick Malfoy into thinking they were his fellow Slytherins. Music: Happy Haunts by Aaron Kenny #MagicalTheory #HarryPotter #podcast #WizardPhD

Have you ever not slept well because your four-and-a-half-year-old woke up at some ungodly hour, and then later that day tried to read a chapter about Professor Binns and his dreadfully boring History of Magic class? It's HARD. Also, can we talk about Professor Binns? I'm sure there's some eager young witch or wizard who feels a real passion for magical history and would LOVE to teach it at Hogwarts, to really bring the subject alive for the students, but they can't because the position is filled by a GUY WHO DIED. Usually when a faculty member dies that's a chance to get some new young blood on your teaching staff, but not only is Binns blocking the hire of a new professor, he's also awful at his job. History, in the right hands, is exciting and dynamic! As a guy who strongly considered majoring in history, I've always been mad at Dumbledore for not firing Binns and hiring a living, competent teacher. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/reading-harry-potter/support

In this episode, we (and Ron) get to learn a little bit about the title of this book aka The Chamber of Secrets. But before that, a whole bunch of stuff happens:- Harry and Ron get assigned detentions. McGonagall smartly tailors the detentions - Harry gets assigned time with his favoritest Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor and Ron has to clean the trophy room, in the Muggle way, with Filch. Talk about fun. During his detention, Harry hears a disembodied voice but can't be sure where it was coming from or who it could be.- Harry almost gets another detention from Filch for dripping mud in the corridor but is saved by Nearly Headless Nick. Nick also invites him to his 500th Deathday Party on Halloween; Harry agrees to attend, with Hermione and Ron, out of sheer gratitude.- As per Ron's prediction, the Deathday party turns out to be dead depressing so they split midway to go back to the feast. Harry hears the disembodied voice again in the corridor (Ron and Hermione can't), except this time it's saying a lot of scary stuff like 'Rip. Tear. Kill.' and 'I smell blood'. Harry runs towards the voice, a confused Ron and Hermione in tow, and end up in front of some writing on a wall ('The Chamber of Secrets is open. Enemies of the heir, beware') and a petrified cat - Mrs. Norris. The entire school shows up just after they do and catches them at the scene of the crime.- Filch accuses Harry of killing his cat because Harry figured out he's a Squib. But thankfully, Dumbledore believes that Harry had nothing to do with the incident and gets him off the hook. Hermione remembers reading about the Chamber of Secrets but she doesn't have her copy of Hogwarts, A History to refresh her memory and all the copies have been borrowed from the library. So, she interrupts Professor Binns during a History of Magic lecture and asks him. That's how Ron learns about the Chamber of Secrets.HARRY POTTER STORIESIn this episode, this segment features Pavithra Muthalagan, a friend and listener of the podcast. If you are interested in sharing your story with us, just record yourself telling the story of how you starting reading the books and send it to mimblewimblepodcast@gmail.com.PREPARATIONYou can prepare for this episode by readingChapter 7: Mudbloods and Murmurs (from when Ron started throwing up slugs)Chapter 8: The Deathday PartyChapter 9: The Writing on the Wallof Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsYou can also listen to this podcast on iTunes, Google Podcast, or any other favorite podcast app. Just search for Mimblewimble - The Harry Potter Podcast.NOTESThe wikipedia entry for a Kelpie.
