Ewe Kente weaving by a group of two weavers in the Kpetoe community in Volta Region, Ghana. Kente is woven on a horizontal strip loom, which produces a narrow band of cloth about four inches wide. Several of these strips are carefully arranged and hand-sewn together to create a cloth of the desired size. Most kente weavers are men. Weaving involves the crossing of a row of parallel threads called the warp (threads running vertically) with another row called the weft (threads running horizontally). A horizontal loom, constructed with wood, consists of a set of two, four or six heddles (loops for holding thread), which are used for separating and guiding the warp threads. These are attached to treadles (foot pedals) with pulleys that have spools of thread inserted in them. The pulleys can be used to move the warp threads apart. As the weaver divides the warp threads, he uses a shuttle (a small wooden device carrying a bobbin, or small spool of thread) to insert the weft threads between them. These various parts of the loom, like the motifs in the cloth, all have symbolic significance and are accorded a great deal of respect. By alternating colours in the warp and weft, a weaver can create complex patterns, which in kente cloth are valued for both their visual effect and their symbolism. Patterns can exist vertically (in the warp), or horizontally (in the weft), or both. Source: Khan Academy. Ewe Kente Cloths are considered by many to be one of the most premier and unique styles of Kente Cloth in the modern day. Ewe Kente Cloths are now made mostly by artisans in Southern Ghana near the towns Agbozume and Kpetoe. The tradition of Kente Cloth Weaving dates as far back as the 11th Century and Ewe Kente Cloths have a variety of influences with many variations in style. What makes Ewe Kente more unique than the traditional Asante style of Kente Cloth is the diversity of design styles. "With its sharp, clipped sounds and natural rhythm, this recording immediately drew me in. It felt like a composition in itself, already crafted, and required little manipulation to tease out its natural syncopation and lively tempo. In my reimagined piece, I aimed to enhance these natural rhythms, capturing the physicality of Kente weaving - the movement of hands, the crossings of parallel threads, the interplay of warp and weft. "As I listened, the percussive quality of the weaving reminded me of the gyil, the traditional Ghanaian xylophone/ wooden. The gyil's bright, buzzing resonance created by its gourd resonators mirrors the sounds of the wooden loom and treadles. Inspired by this connection, I incorporated gyil-like tonal elements into the composition and played with a few samples. The warm, resonant timbres of the instrument blend with the weaving sounds, creating a dialogue between craftsmanship and music, tradition and reinterpretation. This interplay between instrument and craft reflects the deep relationship between Ghanaian music and artisanal traditions. "Many thanks to Samuel, Emmanuele, and the individuals featured in this recording. Through your hands and laughter in this recording, I feel a deep connection to this moment in time and wondered what you were creating. "The title, "Weaving Rhythms," highlights the profound cultural and historical significance of Kente weaving, Ghanaian music and the community that comes together through both art forms. Just as each thread in Kente cloth carries meaning, I wonder what stories the loom has heard. Interlacing tradition, storytelling, and heritage, kente is rich with symbolism. The piece unfolds in layers like a woven tapestry, as I build up the motif before scaling it back to reach the final few seconds, where a spool of thread is spun." "Among the Asante (or Ashanti) people of Ghana, West Africa, a popular legend relates how two young men—Ota Karaban and his friend Kwaku Ameyaw—learned the art of weaving by observing a spider weaving its web. One night, the two went out into the forest to check their traps, and they were amazed by a beautiful spider's web whose many unique designs sparkled in the moonlight. The spider, named Ananse, offered to show the men how to weave such designs in exchange for a few favors. After completing the favors and learning how to weave the designs with a single thread, the men returned home to Bonwire (Bonwire is the town in the Asante region of Ghana where kente weaving originated), and their discovery was soon reported to Asantehene Osei Tutu, first ruler of the Asante kingdom. The asantehene adopted their creation, named kente, as a royal cloth reserved for special occasions, and Bonwire became the leading kente weaving center for the asantehene and his court. Winemaker Bob Cabral. Winemaker Bob Cabral is back on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger, after a long time. His last appearance on the show was this episode on October 20, 2021. This 2024 harvest will be Bob Cabral's 45th harvest in the wine business. Bob Cabral Wines is his label now. He grew up in Central California where his parents were growers of red wine grapes and almonds. Bob pronounces almonds “amands” with the short A, which is a pronunciation unique to the California central valley where they grow. (This pronunciation is close to the form and pronunciation of the French word for almonds, “amands”.) He studied winemaking at Fresno State and got a Master's in Biochemistry, moving to Sonoma County in 1986. Bob has travelled the world for his business. He worked for DeLoach vineyards under Randy Ullom, who is now at Kendall-Jackson. He just celebrated thirty years there. Then he went to Kente, worked for some consulting winemakers, then Alderbrook, now owned by the Orsi family. 2011 Winemaker of the Year Back in 2011 Wine Enthusiast magazine named Bob Cabral its Winemaker of the Year. Now they are tasting Bob's 2019 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Bob tells about how he is getting ready to move to Paradise Ridge. He will lease half of their winery and he will make his wines while Paradise Ridge will also continue to make wine. It should be open in July. Paradise Ridge will also be open for visitors. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. Next they taste a 2021 Rosé called American Girl, a Rosé of Pinot Noir. He first made it this way in 2016, but he stopped making it until 2021 again. “It may be a pain to make but it's not a pain to taste!” Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. Dan Berger says it has a little of the richness of a white wine but also some of the structure of a red. Steve Jaxon declares that it is one of the best Rosés he has ever tasted. Dan suggests it would go perfectly with Steak Tartare. “An explosion of flavor in your mouth,” in Bob Cabral's words.

Am I surprised? No. But am I disgusted down to my bones? Absolutely. After begging and pleading for Black votes... After wearing Kente cloth and taking a knee for injustice in America... After marching and protesting against injustice - the Democratic Party just spit in the face of Black leaders, Black voters, and Black people in general. Let me explain. The Washington DC City Council voted 12-1, in a near unanimous vote, to pass important criminal justice reforms for the city. And I say this with all due respect to the City Council, but the reforms are moderate. They aren't revolutionary or radical. They are basic.DC is a majority Black city. The City Council is a majority-Black body. And suddenly after they passed these reforms, rich white people in the city flipped out. Then conservatives flipped out. And that's an important observation to make, because it was seeing this that caused the conservative media to flip out. Which in turn caused Republicans in Congress to say they were going to do something that has not been done since 1991. They were going to use their power in Congress to overturn the Washington DC City Council. Since DC is not a state, Congress has this weird power, but it's RARELY used. The thing is, they would need Biden and some more Democrats to side with them - and after pressure, they've agreed to do just that. And here's the rub. To get this support, conservatives AND Biden have flat out lied about these reforms - particularly around the issue of carjacking. The reforms took the sentencing for carjacking down from 40 years, which is the highest and harshest in the nation, down to 24 years, which is still the highest and harshest in the nation. And Biden has been parroting Republican talking points saying this is going to make the city less safe. But here's the thing - DC has the harshest sentencing on carjacking in America right now, and it's STILL a problem. Why? Because 40 years for carjacking doesn't solve the problem. I have a whole lot to say. Let me unpack and explain it. On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (11/03/22), we pick up where we ended on our previous broadcast and present more of an episode of the Hank Unplugged podcast. Hank is talking with Dr. Mary Grabar, author of Debunking The 1619 Project: Exposing the Plan to Divide America. Hank and Dr. Grabar discuss the falsehood that Thomas Jefferson fathered Sally Hemings' children, the mistreatment of Abraham Lincoln in the 1619 Project, the Constitution and slavery, the misappropriation and virtue signaling of the Kente cloth, and the impact of Karl Marx on the perception of slavery in America.
Hank Hanegraaff is joined by Dr. Mary Grabar to discuss her book Debunking the 1619 Project: Exposing the Plan to Divide America. According to the New York Times's “1619 Project,” America was not founded in 1776, with a declaration of freedom and independence, but in 1619 with the introduction of African slavery into the New World. According to Grabar, the “1619 Project” is not just bad history, it is a danger to our national life, replacing the idea, goal, and reality of American unity with race-based obsessions that we have seen play out in violence, riots, and the destruction of American monuments—not to mention the wholesale rewriting of America's historical and cultural past. In this illuminating conversation, Grabar discusses the lies, distortions, and propaganda behind the “1619 Project” and why her book debunking it is essential reading. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly summit on Neutralizing Workplace Racism. We barely survived Memorial Day and may not live to see Independence Day. In the interim, we'll have to make do with Juneteenth. A number of Whites have already voice their stringent opposition to this event becoming a paid federal holiday. If this day is "recognized" on your job, be prepared for tackiness and heaps of direct Racism. Kente cloth napkins, Wal-Mart's Juneteenth sorbet and buckets of fried chicken. We'll also revisit Covid-19 impact on the workplace. It may seem like things are back to "normal;" however, that is not the case. In Oregon, a number of White enforcement officials rejected all policies to ensure a safe working environment. They refused the mandatory vaccine and also flaunted regular testing requirements for unvaccinated staff. This sort of misconduct has been widespread for the duration of the Covid-19 crisis. The Royals NFT is the first luxury NFT to showcase African culture, provide authentic IRL experiences on the continent, and host exclusive events. This NFT is creating a new Royal Family on the blockchain that welcomes everyone. For many cultures, Royalty is expressed by the clothing or specific fabric that a person wears. In Ghana, the Royal Fabric is called “Kente.” This is the most expensive cloth in the country. Anyone who sees you wearing Kente will acknowledge your Royal Status. “Ankara” is a collection of vivid and colorful patterns that celebrate African culture and represents high class, fashion, and style. Ankara is worn by proud Africans, friends of Africans & World Travelers all over the globe to declare their heritage and love for the African continent. Leah Ibrahim Sams, our artist, was raised in South East Asia where she was exposed to a fantastic variety of cultures. We specifically chose her for this project because of her ability to celebrate diverse cultures through vibrant colors and illustrations. https://theroyals.art/

Chef Joe Randall, a national treasure and master craftsman with over 55 years of experience, is referred to as the "Dean of Southern Cooking". He and his close friends and colleagues, Edna Lewis, Leah Chase, Patrick Clark, along with the late Hercules, George Washington's enslaved cook, were honored at the Smithsonian Institute of National Museum of African American History and Culture, where his cookbook "A Taste of Heritage: the New African American Cuisine" and his 40-year-old colander are on permanent display. In the late 90s, he adopted his signature uniform trimmed with handwoven Kente cloth from Ghana, as a show of pride in his rich heritage. Chef Joe has been a faculty member of four universities sharing his talent, experience and enthusiasm teaching students the craft and systems of restaurant excellence. Eventually, he created the "Chef Joe Randall Cooking School" where he preached the gospel of authentic southern cuisine to two generations during its 16-year tenure. He has multiple honors, founded the Edna Lewis Foundation to commemorate her contributions, and was a founding board member of Southern Food Alliance. As a student and teacher of hospitality all his life, Chef Joe, and host, Brad Johnson, walk through some of the unique history and Chef's attempts to elevate the visibility of African Americans in the culinary industry. We hear first-hand knowledge of cooking with the legendary Edna Lewis, Leah Chase and Patrick Clark, all trailblazers in the culinary world. Chef Joe also explains the complicated relationship that African Americans have with the hospitality industry, being pigeonholed into cooking "Soul Food", and the impact of not being recognized as contributors to American cuisine over the years. He implores young people seeking a culinary career to go the extra mile in order to know your craft and rise in the industry. Recognizing that opportunities are opening up, we applaud this trailblazing, warm, kind spirit so generous with his wisdom and guidance, fighting for his community and highlighting other's success over a lifetime. * * * Please follow @CornerTableTalk on Instagram and Facebook For more information on host Brad Johnson or to join our mailing list, please visit: https://postandbeamhospitality.com/ For questions or comments, please e.mail: info@postandbeamhospitality.comSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
