EX04 Featuring: Susie McLean an artist I have played with and her two songs Sing Your Song and ‘Till the Morning Comes This episode features: Susie McLean! I had the unique pleasure of helping Susie form a band here in Ontario for select performances - I played bass and guitar for Susie's live shows. We had an amazing live band and we had the opportunity to play at Indigo's in Toronto as well as Niagara area wineries! From Susie's site - For me, it all started with music. Growing up in a household where Gospel music was the norm, I quickly connected to music which led to playing piano and songwriting. Susie was nominated for an original piece she wrote called “Sing Your Song'' at the Independent Music Awards and another nomination as “Best Jazz Artist” at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Susie can be heard across Canada at every Chapters Indigo on their in-store playlist. On top of a great musical career, Susie is also a professional actor! From Susie's imdb page: Susie McLean is an actor, known for Pixels (2015), High-Rise Rescue (2017) and Beauty and the Beast (2012). As mentioned, this first song for your playlist is Susie's original song - Sing Your Song. A great relaxed jazzy tune - such a beautiful song. Enjoy! Susie McLean - Sing Your Song This second song was always fun to play live - I always loved the light gallop to the tune and when the drums kicked in the song would lift into a nice groove - this was a great song to perform live. The ending always made me a little nervous - I only had one shot to hit that final walk at the end of the song!! Today's dose of "Vitamin D" is dedicated to setting the caged bird free! You may be wondering who is the caged bird that I speak of? Well, honey, that caged bird could be you. A bird feeling caged without a key. Trapped behind “bars” of depression, obesity, fear of sexual orientation and anything else that prohibits you from soaring to new heights. While everyone may see you smiling on the outside, they have no idea of how you feel on the inside. They may not realize that through your smile, you cry. In “Caged Bird” Alicia Keys states, “I know why the caged bird sings, only joy comes from song.” Regardless of your “physical restrictions,” whether coerced by society or even your own self, you still have the ability to sing your own unique song. See that is the one thing that makes the “caged bird” so special...its ability to sing. So what is your song? Your song is anything that makes you feel joy. I didn't say what makes everyone else feel joy, I said anything that makes YOU feel joy. In order to live an abundant life, you cannot be anything shy of residing in joy. I think you're worthy of joy, don't you? Now go claim your song! Being who you are makes you beautiful! Find the key within yourself to set yourself free for the whole world to see. Just fly…fly as high as you can fly! “Spread your wings, spread your beauty….” That's it for your dose of "Vitamin D." be sure to follow me on all social media @DawnDaiSpeaks and until next time, always remember, "you are your greatest asset!" Today, I interview Marti MacEwan who says that although she was a successful speaker, there was a lack of satisfaction after speaking because there was a lingering fear of those eyes on her and the opinions of her audience. No amount of reassurance helped. Marti learned to refocus her energy and was able to overcome stage fright by shifting her awareness and her expectations. Marti who is a professional counselor and "Stage Fright Coach" had some fear of public speaking - the "normal" insecurity and nerves. But when she started to learn to sing solo, she had a complete meltdown. She had no idea where that panic was coming from, why it happened when it did, or what to do about it. Figuring out how to be free of her "fear of public singing" led her to develop the Stage Fright Cure and a professional specialty of helping others be free of their fear of speaking or performing in any setting. She has helped musicians, speakers, leaders, writers, business people and professionals be free of the limiting effects of stage fright. Find Marti here: Get a free guide to The Stage Fright Cure at stagefright.com. https://stagefright.com/rapidrelief/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/yourstagefrightcoach/ https://www.facebook.com/marti.macewan_________________________I'm your podcast host, Dr. Doreen Downing, and I help people find their voice so they can overcome anxiety, be confident, and speak without fear. Get started now on your journey to your authentic voice by downloading my Free 7 Step Guide to Fearless Speaking: https://www.doreen7steps.com.

Sing Your Song Listening to the Unique Rhythm of Every Single Day With Rabbi Ari Sollish (Recorded live at the Intown Jewish Academy on May 19, 2021) A year, a month, or even a week is arguably consequential. But a day? A day is but a mere blip on the radar, gone before one can think! The Levites’ songs in the Temple and our memorialization of them in the morning prayers forcefully argue to the contrary: every day is an entirely new tune.

The East Side Freedom Library invites you a special version of our Labor History Film and Reading Group for March 2021. The Uprising of ‘34, the award-winning documentary by George Stoney, is the subject of a conversation on March 16, via Zoom, with the film's editor Susanne Rostock and labor historian Mary Wingerd, author of the essay Rethinking Paternalism: Power and Parochialism in a Southern Mill Village (Journal of American History, 1996). The film is available for rental on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/uprisingof34. For Women's History Month, join ESFL in an exploration of the lives, work, and struggles of southern textile mill workers. The Uprising of '34 is a startling documentary which tells the story of the General Strike of 1934, a massive but little-known strike by hundreds of thousands of Southern cotton mill workers during the Great Depression. The mill workers' defiant stance — and the remarkable grassroots organizing that led up to it — challenged a system of mill owner control that had shaped life in cotton mill communities for decades. Mary Wingerd's essay not only explores this system of control, but also unearths the under-the-radar forms of resistance which made this strike possible. And she encourages us to consider other times and places where such control and resistance informed working class life. The Uprising of '34 offers a penetrating look at class, race, and power in working communities throughout America and raises critical questions about the role of history in making democracy work today. More than a social document, the film is intended to spark discussion on class, race, economics, and power — issues as vital today as they were decades ago. “The thrust of this film is to give the workers their chance to speak,” said editor Rostock. “We're very proud of the fact that here's a film in which they speak for themselves [with no narrator].” Our conversation will feature Susanne Rostock the film's editor and Minnesota historian Mary Wingerd. Rostock is a director as well as an editor, perhaps best known for her presentation of Harry Belafonte's life in Sing Your Song (2011). In an HBO project, she is currently directing Another Night in the Free World which documents the lives of three young women activists from 2012 to the present. Wingerd is the author of Claiming the City: Politics, Faith, and the Power of Place in St. Paul (2001) and North Country: The Making of Minnesota (2010). Please join us. Embracing numerous musical genres and a fresh blend of traditional Turkish and Western rock music, hard rock quartet maNga are ready to storm the U.S. Feat singer Ferman Akgül, guitarist Yagmur Sarigül (aka “Yamyam”), drummer Özgür Can Öney and bassist Cem Bahtiyar, the Turkish group have drawn Int'l acclaim for the infectious sounds on their three albums, which one could compare in spirit to Linkin Park or System Of A Down. They made a big noise representing their from home country in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest, have over 3M Facebook followers and have drawn the attention of Billboard, the Huffington Post and MTV Europe. The band name maNga possesses a dual meaning. In Turkish, it refers to a unit of ten men in the army, and in Japanese, which was their chief inspiration for using the word, it means graphic novel. "The name was Yagmur's idea, and from that moment 12 years ago we were dreaming about having connections to other countries," declares Özgür. The foursome finally got to play before a NA audience at the SXSW festival in TX in March, and they play CMJ on Oct 18th. 3 months after they formed in 2001, the group competed on the TV show Sing Your Song, which is the Turkish version of Star Search.  Their 2nd place showing ignited a creative spark that lead to numerous gigs in Turkey while writing the original tunes that comprised their self-titled debut album, which was released via Sony Epic in Turkey in December 2004. The album and its videos spotlighted an amalgam of heavy rock, hip-hop, pop and Turkish music. The album sold more than 180,000 copies in Turkey, making maNga the 1st band there to get gold certification on their debut album. The song “Bir Kadin Çizeceksin” appeared in the EA Sports FIFA 2006 computer game soundtrack, which exposed them to European audiences who loved their music even if they did not understand the words.

Arts and Culture: Ways of Seeing, Ways of Thinking = Arts, Design

Sing Your Song is an inspiring biographical documentary that surveys the life and times of Harry Belafonte—from his rise to fame as a singer touring a segregated country to his provocative crossover into Hollywood. This post-screening discussion features the filmmaker, his daugher.

First thing you gotta know is that Epi61 is the longest installment of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast, that we've done to date. No particular reason for it. The interview with our Special Guest Graham Elwood comes in at about 30 minutes. But we've got a bunch of podcast clips to share, a Boozin' With Bill segment, the TweetSack section, our Burst O' Durst and a new song by musical geekmaster John Anealio. That, plus my usual rambling gum-flapping has us pushing the limits in terms of just how long someone can shovel Succotash into their earholes. Sue me - this stuff's free. I was delighted to talk at length with the aforementioned Graham Elwood. We had tried to link up when he was in San Francisco recently for a face-to-face sit-down but couldn't coordinate schedules. So we Skyped it and it came out fine. Graham's a comedian, an actor, a writer, a podcaster, and most recently, co-producer and organizer of the Los Angeles Podcast Festival (the 2nd annual is this October 4-6 in Santa Monica.) Along with his partner-in-crime Chris Mancini, Graham hosts the Comedy Film Nerds podcast and also co-authored the Comedy Film Nerds Guide to Movies. In addition, he is heard often on Doug Loves Movies, competing against the audience during Doug Benson's live shows on the road. We talk about how he got his comedy start, his podcast start, his podcast festival start...lots of starts. And, most important to our podcaster listeners, reveals what they have in store at this year's LA PodFest to let more of us get into the action of podcasting in relative comfort from the event. (And his latest CD, Palm Strike Dance Party, is available at http://Graham Elwood.com!) GET HIP It's not too late to help friend-of-Succotash Chris Bonno (interviewed in Epi43) as he's just gone through hip replacement surgery. Being as he' a comedian and a painter, he's got zip in terms of health insurance, so paying for his operation is going to be one giant mofo that Obama's health care program doesn't seem set to cover. You can find out how to kick a little money into the hip kitty through his website at http://ChrisBonno.com or else click on the link to get over to the GiveForward website where they're taking care of the funds as they come in. THE 10 MOST ACTIVE IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST I realized that what I read The 10 Most Active in the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcast List, veroften I don’t even know some of these shows I’m reading about. And they’re in the Top 100 of comedy podcasts – that’s out of literally THOUSANDS. So starting this week I’m going to pick one or two or a few to play clips from so we can all learn as we grow. Here’s the list of, again, the most ACTIVE shows on the list this past week. That means, regardless of their rank, they showed the most movement either up or down the chart. 47. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher -1059. The World of Phil Hendrie +2163. Sir Darryl Radio Experience +33973. Sex Squad +1779. Conversations with Matt Dwyer +25780. The Dana Gould Hour -1581. Yoshi Didn’t Podcast -1482. Wits +2784. Rollin’ With Dice & Wheels +11398. SModcast FeAB -17 BURST O' DURST FROM THE OL' BOOMERAGER HIMSELF We have our usual  Burst O' Durst feature but I wanted to remind those Succotashians who live in the San Francisco Bay Area that Will Durst still has a couple of Tuesday nights (thru June 25th) left in the run of his one-man show, BoomeRaging: LSD to OMG, at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco. Hop over to http://WillDurst.com for showtimes and ticket information. SING YOUR SONG, NERDY MUSIC MAN Our friend John Anealio - from The Functional Nerds podcast with co-host Patrick Hester - has a new song out and we've got it featured in this episode. I'll Be Your Thor is a love song from a nerd to his even nerdier lady for whom only one hero can save the day. Once you hear it on Succotash and  you love it, you can download it for FREE over at http://JohnAnealio.com. STRAIGHT FROM THE BOTTLE  Our Boozin' With Bill is a little different than our usual visit with Succotash's booth announcer cum bartender. He's unearthed an ancient bottle of creme de menthe and he's determined to see if it's still viable for getting a heat on. THE CLIPS The Sir Darryl Radio ExperienceI’m not sure what this show is all about – or why it shot up 339 places on the Stitcher Top 100 Comedy Podcasts this week. I listened to part of a recent episode where Sir Darryl, who bills himself on the homesite for the show as “The Most Articulate Negro in America”, starts drinking wine and apparently starts to get loopy within just a couple of minutes. Conversations with Matt DwyerComedian, actor and writer Matt Dwyer’s podcast is into its 50s, episode wise, and this week his show's Stitcher numbers leaped up 257 places this week!  We feature a slice from his recent interview with Duncan Trussell, who is also a comedian and the host of the Duncan Trussell Family Hour. Rollin’ With Dice and WheelsDice is back. Celebrity Apprentice wasn’t enough and now Andrew “Dice” Clay and his longtime opening act Michael “Wheels” Parise have their own podcast. They’re only into their Epi8 and doing phenomenal numbers – up 113 places this week to make it into the Top 100 on Stitcher. In this recent episode we're clipping, comic Tom Green is co-hosting in place of Wheels. Pop My CultureWe haven’t looked in on Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland of the Pop My Culture podcast for awhile. They’re going great guns, after taking a little time away from the mikes, and just dropped their 116th episode, which features guest Dana Gould. Comic, actor, writer, he’s also the host of podcasting’s The Dana Gould Hour. (I’m also featuring this episode for my review in This Week In Comedy Podcasts over on Splitsider.com!)  The Paul Mecurio ShowThe Sideshow Network has a massive pile of steaming comedy podcasts, with some really great shows like PodCRASH with THAT Chris Gore, Overview with our pal Rick Overton, and Story Worthy with Christine Blackburn & Hannes Phinney. It’s also home to The Paul Mecurio Show. I’ve clipped Paul here before but it’s been a while. Paul’s guest this week was Jay Leno. I don’t think I’ve heard of Jay being on any podcast before – is that possible? Anyway, Paul got him – they have a bit of a history together – Jay bought the very first joke Paul sold before, which gave him the inspiration to give up his law practice to become a comedian. The Bitter Sound PodcastAlthough I’ve played a few bits and pieces and show ID’s from Davian Dent over at The Bitter Sound podcast, I think I’ve yet to feature a bona fide clip…until now. He’s also a co-host of the Strange Times podcast along with Kat Sorens from the Rigid Fist podcast and Bonn from The Bonn & Obo show. But he’s off in his own thing here, with music, sounds and a great set of pipes to boot. The Geek GenerationRob Logan over at the Geek Generation podcast did what every red-blooded internationally-heard comedy podcaster should do – he sent in a clip! It’s easy to do: Just send along a 3-5 minute MP3 clip of your show to marc@SuccotashShow.com. If you want to include a little written descriptor of what the clip’s about, even better. Like Rob did – here’s what he says: "Rob Logan and Mike Volpe get inspired by the upcoming Fall TV schedule and pitch some show ideas of their own." Whew! That's a lot of show! Hope you enjoy it - don't be shy about letting folks know about it, either! Go on up to iTunes and give us a rating and a little review. And you can give us a thumbs up at Stitcher.com and leave a comment. Or visit our Facebook page and leave us a comment there. Then there's always Stitcher. See you in the next episode but, in the meantime, don't forget to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
