When I think about 75 year-old Fatimah and her quality of life, I want to make sure that 75 year-old Fatimah also has the option to have beautiful things and experiences. That starts with me looking out for her right now. Welcome to GradSchooled! This is a podcast about how to organize your genius for greater professional opportunities and a thriving life. Today, we are talking about money. I know it isn’t a sexy topic, but it is so important. I hope that with the right tools, you can expand your financial literacy and confidence. And today, I have a lot of those tools outlined for you to take the next (or the first!) step to having the right foundations for your future 75 year-old self. During this pandemic especially, it all begins with education, planning and intentional spending. So, take a deep breath and let’s get started! Show Notes: [1:11] - This week, we are talking about money, specifically how to match your financial planning with your goals and your job type. [2:03] - A lot of financial planning advice tends to be so traditional and doesn’t often take into account how to plan for irregular income that accompany entrepreneurship, freelancing, seasonal professions like teaching, and periods of unemployment. . [2:41] - Fatimah grew up in a household that did not talk a lot about money or have a strong foundation in financial literacy. [3:49] - Whether you have an employer who takes care of some aspects of your finances (like insurance, for example) or you are an entrepreneur with all the financial responsibility, financial planning and goal setting is crucial. [4:19] - Fatimah’s ultimate goal here is to help us be more intentional with our money. With the current pandemic, our spending habits have changed. How does that affect your goals? [6:21] - Due to her change in spending habits during the Covid-19 pandemic, Fatimah made the realization that some of the things she previously spent money on were unnecessary. This has given her the opportunity to rethink some things in regards to her spending and goals. [6:58] - One change Fatimah has made during this period of reflection is to contribute more to her IRA each month. [8:01] - Whether you are self-employed or have an employer, you need to make sure you are thinking about yourself in the future. [9:12] - Thinking ahead to your future self will help you with impulse purchases right now. [10:33] - How do you maximize what you’re doing right now and maximize the knowledge you have around money to be able to do more with what you have? Asking herself these questions pushed Fatimah to start investing in an IRA and secure disability insurance. [12:08] - Also during the pandemic, Fatimah took the time to look at insurances. Because she is an entrepreneur, Fatimah’s ability to earn directly impacts her livelihood and that impacts a lot of financial decisions, including insurance. [14:22] - Earlier this year, Fatimah experienced a fall and a concussion. Thankfully, she had enough money saved and had some client work that she was able to fulfill. But this experience was eye opener for her. [16:40] - After her injury, she reached out to financial advisors to help her with figuring out the best plan for her and her specific circumstances and income. [17:28] - When Fatimah was working for an employer, these types of concerns were not on her mind because of consistent paychecks, money set aside on her behalf, and her marriage providing a second income. Becoming an entrepreneur and divorcee has given her a different relationship with money. [19:13] - Fatimah shares her first experiences as an entrepreneur and her realization that she has the ability to create wealth. [21:20] - 39 year-old Fatimah wants to make sure that 75 and 85 year-old Fatimah is taken care of. That starts now. [23:20] - The first recommendation Fatimah has for you on your journey to financial literacy is to listen to financial podcasts. Fatimah started by listening to a financial podcast weekly and scheduled the time for it into her week. [24:41] - Fatimah shares several financial podcasts that really impacted her. You can find these in the Links and Resources below. [27:39] - Fatimah also shares a book she enjoyed called Real Money Answers for Every Woman by Patrice Washington. [28:40] - Even though Fatimah is very intentional with her spending, she still knows how to enjoy herself and do things that she loves. [29:05] - Whether you are working for an employer or for yourself, make sure you are not caught off guard and that your 75 year-old self can enjoy the things he or she loves, too. [30:02] - Fatimah is enjoying things so much more because she is so intentional with her spending. She is spending the money on things that are truly important and that gives her the extra finances available for the real things she enjoys. [31:50] - Financial freedom is the goal and Fatimah wants this for you, too. What are some of the things that you have done to enjoy yourself now and tomorrow? Last week I found myself curious about what some of my friends who I admire in business are thinking about this unusual moment we're in, and what they're sharing with their communities. So, I asked them. And then I decided I'd share their answers with you because what's mine is yours. Their answers are as diverse as their backgrounds, and in this episode you'll learn: • The biggest opportunity to focus on right now for small businesses • The 3 areas you need to consider when making a timely pivot • 3 simple steps to navigating this moment of change to make sure your business stays solid • 2 stories of thriving businesses birthed in the 2008 recession (one of which rose from the ashes of a 7-figure business that was lost) • The paramount question to ask about your business to ensure sustainability • 4 Vital Practices to engage in to ensure you're getting the message and gift this moment has for you specifically Listening to the wisdom that these 6 humans shared in their messages was salve to my soul. May it be the medicine you need right now, too. After you've listened, we'd love to know: Which piece of wisdom resonated with you the most? How are you going to implement it? Redefining Wealth: The People, Work + Money Pillars This week, we’re doing another rewind here at Redefining Wealth. If you missed us last week, go back and have a listen because this week’s episode builds on the three pillars we covered last week. At Redefining Wealth, we believe becoming wealthy has 100% nothing to do with money – IT has 100% to do with your mindset toward money. What is in your mind, as well as what happens in every aspect of your life plays a part in your financial goals. If you’re living in a cluttered space, most likely your finances will reflect that. If you’re not fulfilled in the work you do, your finances will reflect that, too. It’s a vicious cycle, but one you can break if you’re willing to do the mindset work that goes with it. So many of us were raised to chase money, but chasing money is not enough. I’m living proof of that. I’ve made a lot of money and then lost it all in the Great Recession. Through that experience though, I’ve learned it’s not about the money. This week we review how and why it’s about tapping into the other areas of your life and making sure those moments are just as fulfilling and in line with your vision. “The more you become fulfilled in other areas of your life, the easier time you’ll have with money.” People Pillar So often I get asked how I went from sleeping on my brother’s couch to giving expert money advice on the Steve Harvey show. The short answer: It was never about chasing the money. It was not by knowing every item on my credit report. It was about understanding the six pillars, especially the people pillar, and knowing that relationships matter. “Relationships are a key part to building wealth – you need allies and advocates to connect you to opportunities.” Surprisingly many people don’t value relationships. They don’t make wise decisions when it comes to how they interact with people. I’ve been in these relationships before, especially in business. For instance, I’ve hired someone who I thought was great to work with. However, that person ended up disregarding timelines, the contract and failing to acknowledge the breakdown. All of these things ultimately damaged our relationship. I believe in the golden rule – treat people how you want to be treated. You don’t reach out to someone ONLY when you want something, and when there is breakdown, you don’t run and hide, you talk to them and figure out a way forward together. “If we thought more deeply about our relationships, it would change our conversations, attitudes and the way we do business.” Work Pillar This pillar is all about living out your life’s purpose, which I see as the key to wealth. For me, I’ve always gone well beyond the normal budgeting and couponing conversation. If you look at Real Money Answers for Every Woman, you’ll notice in the book – before I ever talk about a budget or a savings account – I talk about mindset and creating wealthy habits, and the importance of giving yourself permission to earn more money. I know when I lost everything, it wasn’t about cutting coupons or using reward cards. It was about using the gifts and talents I’d been born with to produce wealth. When you’re not excited or fired up by the work you’re doing, then you’re looking for ways to fill the void, and to me, this lack of fulfillment is the number one reason people mismanage money. In other words, they’re unfulfilled and they think buying things or using their money on x, y and z is going to provide the fulfillment they need, but it never does. When you’re working in your purpose, you bring a sense of enthusiasm and energy to your work. You want to operate in excellence. You want to be known for greatness. It naturally puts you in a space where you attract more because people want to work with you and they want to bring opportunities your way – that does not happen to someone who is working merely to get by. Money Pillar You know by now that I’m not a fan of chasing money, that’s true. What I am a fan of is attracting the prosperity you desire, and I think when you bring all of these pillars together, it becomes more of an attraction thing than a running-after-and-chasing thing. My sweet spot has been showing people how to make and manage their money masterfully. That’s what I’m good at. I can talk to you about budgets and debt elimination, but if you don’t have some of these pillars mastered, you’ll never do what needs to be done because you won’t have the right mindset. You won’t have the right behaviors yet. People often ask me, “What’s the greatest lesson I can know about money?” And I say, “It’s not about savings or your 401k, it’s that what you respect will become what you perfect.” In other words, we’ve been conditioned to jump into a relationship with money without ever being trained on how to properly acknowledge and respect money. Think about it. What you have with money is a relationship, and any relationship that’s rooted in acknowledgment and appreciation, is bound to be healthier. It’s bound to be healthier than a relationship where there’s no communication or a lack of interest. “You have to check in and show respect in order to have the best relationship you can with your money.” So, how do you do this? Block time on your calendar each week or each month to check in with your money. Look at what’s coming in, what’s going out and find areas where you can do better. Reserving the time to have that conversation nurtures the relationship and gets you on better ground with your money. These last two weeks, we’ve looked at all aspects of the six pillars because I’m convinced this journey is not only about money. The successes we have with money and wealth are based on our well-being and happiness in all the other areas of our life. Did you find this rewind helpful? Which pillar are you committed to working on first? I can’t believe this is already our 100th episode. It feels like yesterday that I reluctantly stumbled into the world of podcasting. And now, nearly two years later, here we are. If you’re new here and looking for hardcore advice on things like budgeting and investing, this is not that type of money podcast. You see, Redefining Wealth is about getting you prepared for those types of podcasts – the money ones I mean. It’s about helping you understand that wealth is so much more than just money and material possessions. “There’s much more to wealth than chasing money. At Redefining Wealth, we unpack and explore all the different ways money connects to our lives.” This episode is brought to you by Radical Success Certification Program. If you’re an emerging life coach or experienced coach who feels stuck, check out this proven, A-Z coaching framework by Doreen Rainey. Knowing When Your Season Is Up To celebrate our 100th episode, I want to take you back to just before I launched Redefining Wealth. I was in a great place. My career was going great. For the most part I was fulfilled with what I was doing. I was making good money, doing good work, helping and serving people, and yet, the truth is, my season was up. “What if your season has long expired and you’re extending it out of fear, complacency or delusion?” Now, I’ll be honest, Redefining Wealth was not something I’d planned on doing. The idea of starting a podcast had crossed my mind a couple of times, but it always seemed like too much work. And there was also a fear that people might not get or want it. After all, I had been known as a personal finance expert for years, and while I still incorporate the term wealth, I rarely talk about those hardcore money topics anymore. I lacked confidence. I also thought I lacked the credibility to go deeper into the money topic – to look at how money connects to all the other areas of our lives. But here’s what I learned: It doesn’t matter how credible you are on paper, what matters is how you feel. A Season Doesn’t Have to Be Bad to Mean It’s Time for a Change Sometimes we think that a situation has to be awful in order for us to move on. But here’s the thing, purpose evolves and I don’t believe any of us are meant to do the exact same thing in the exact same way our entire lives. “We’re meant to evolve and if we don’t move when our season is up, then we go bankrupt emotionally, mentally, spiritually, financially.” For me, I was in a space where I was content. I was America’s Money Maven. I had a weekly segment for years on the Steve Harvey Morning Show. I was doing other shows like Dr. Oz and being featured by publications like Cosmopolitan, the New York Post and Essence Magazine. I had a good name as a money expert. Why would I change all of that? How to Know When Your Season Is Up First of all, I experienced what I call the boulder effect. It started out as a pebble, as it always does. For me, well it looked like me getting annoyed going on all of these talk shows and talking about budgets and credit reports when I knew that money and wealth was much more than those things. I kept thinking, “If they ask me one more thing about a budget, I’m going to snap!” Money is not about a template, it’s about your behaviors. It’s about your mindset. It’s so much bigger than a budget, and yet, I’d go, get on the couch, smile and do what I was brought there to do. Then came the rock. My website got hacked. Not hacked in the sense that it redirected to a naughty site or something like that, but hacked in the sense that the hacker went in and deleted files and content, and changed the language. It was bad, and even though the hosting company restored the site, it was a shell of what it had been – so much of my content was gone. Then came the boulder. I received a letter stating that Real Money Answers, my entire brand, was infringing on someone else’s copyright. What?! I didn’t understand and from what I knew, I’d had Real Money Answers trademarked for quite a while. What I learned through this process, however, was that my attorney had dropped the ball, and I didn’t actually have Real Money Answers trademarked. It was like one nightmare after another, and I knew it was time for a change. What Began as a Dream Turned into a Chore Another way I knew my season was up was that opportunities that once felt like a dream had turned into a chore. They didn’t excite me anymore. Perhaps one of my friends describes this best, “You know what it is?” she said. “I’ve tried to romanticize the fact that this thing started as a dream so that I could survive a toxic environment.” Ding, ding, ding. I know exactly what she means. As an entrepreneur, if you have consistent contracts or clients, you can chain yourself to something and start to believe that IT is your source. In all actuality though, you’re trying to force it to remain or to be the source because you want to romanticize the opportunity based on how it started out. “Not everything that starts out one way will end the same way, and not because the environment changes, but because we change.” The truth is we can make anything look, feel or seem like a dream opportunity if we have an agenda. That’s the space I was in before finally accepting the call to let go and start Redefining Wealth. “Purpose evolves and you have the right to say goodbye to one season and hello to another – that is part of the journey.” If I can leave you with anything, it’s to be honest and real with yourself. If you’re in the midst of a boulder effect or if you know that what began as a dream has turned into a chore, I want you to know it’s okay to surrender and accept that the season is up. Lastly, I want to add that one of my clients, Danielle Joseph, has a whole program on seasons and she further explains how you can go from one season to the next in different areas of your life at different times. What do you do when you feel like God is asking you to pivot in your life or business? How do you build confidence when you feel like your lacking in an area? And how can you redefine the concept of wealth in your life? Podcast guest, author, speaker, coach, and media personality Patrice Washington shares her insights into leadership, how to trust God through transition, and how to build confidence in your calling. If you’re struggling with trust, change, and what to do next, Patrice shares insight after insight in this episode. Patrice’s Leadership Journey Patrice is America’s Money Maven, but she didn’t start out with that title. She launched her business as a real estate and mortgage broker at the age of 21, but when the recession hit, she lost everything. God led her to Proverbs 17:16 and from there she launched a blog, pursued wisdom, and looked for books to help her define who she was. She was greatly impacted by Talane Miedaner’s book Coach Yourself to Success, which encourages the reader to look back in time to help her discover her purpose. Patrice realized that she had been a leader since she pursued a Student Council position in third grade, a time when she didn’t feel confident. She knew from a young age that she could help if just given the chance. When she ran her first business, Patrice understood that she was a boss because she had employees, but she’s since realized she’s a leader in her business within the past few years. She realized that if people trusted her, she couldn’t be haphazard and must lead with intention. Patrice reminds us that it’s time for Spirit-led, faith-filled people to step up and lead. Christians are sprinkled everywhere to lead people everywhere, but we get timid about sharing our faith. How Faith has Played a Role in Her Leadership Faith has always been a part of who she is. She tells event planners and media schedulers who ask her to speak that spirituality is a part of her; it’s a pillar in her life. She must talk about it. She feels that her job is to plant seeds and to tell the truth about her story. We don’t lead people by beating people up, convincing them, or convicting them. We lead by example. How Patrice Defines Leadership Leadership, according to Patrice, is being the example of the path. Being a leader means that you are clear, authentic, Spirit-led, and can articulate the vision. Patrice’s Advice for Younger Leaders Give yourself permission to be awesome, to be all God made you to be, and still be a hot mess. Trusting God Through Transition Since 2009, Patrice has called herself the Money Maven until other people believed that about her. She’s appeared on Fox News, The Dr. Oz Show, and Steve Harvey. She realized that in order to rebuild wealth, you can’t just focus on budgets and savings. In 2017, the Holy Spirit said that she must tell the whole truth. Sometimes the Holy Spirit calls us to pivot or transition, and we may wonder why He wants to interrupt our current success. God called Patrice to transition her business from focusing on money to focusing on the idea of “redefining wealth”. Redefining your wealth is so much more than just money and material possessions. The true definition of wealth (from the Bible) is well-being. Patrice built Redefining Wealth on six pillars: FIT, meaning your physical health PEOPLE, which includes your relationships and connections SPACE, honoring the time you have FAITH, meaning your relationship with God WORK, involves living out your gifts and talents MONEY, which is your financial situation Patrice shares some examples of how God has taught her lessons in the various pillars of Redefining Wealth. She has seen how valuable relationships are, for example, and has learned the value of simply treating people well. How Patrice Developed Redefining Wealth The Holy Spirit drove her message. He asked her to get out of her comfort zone, but getting out of the box is frightening. But Patrice obeyed and looked at her life and the patterns and practices that had helped her achieve success. She wrote out 200 ideas that later became podcast episodes. Then she moved those ideas into categories. She saved the money and faith pillars toward the end intentionally because she wants her audience to do the work and not just wait on God without taking responsibility for their lives. What Happens When You Need to Pivot Patrice had a previous business, Real Money Answers, when the Holy Spirit prompted her to start her current business, Redefining Wealth. She used her existing platform to pivot. As she transitioned from Real Money Answers to Redefining Wealth, she took down all her old products so she had no income. She used her savings to finance her new venture. During her launch time, lots of previous venues turned her down. She had a strong conviction and stuck with it. Her time of transition and pivoting forced her to re-evaluate who she was as a businesswoman and to become independent of what other people think. Patrice reminds us to not give up just because other people don’t understand. Our job is to relentlessly communicate the message we’ve been given. Building Confidence in Your Calling A lot of us struggle to build confidence or discover our gifts and calling because we’re in comparison mode. Negative words or experiences about our natural giftings come easily. For example, Patrice’s gift is speaking, but she got in trouble in school for talking too much. It only makes sense that your gifts will be attacked by your enemy who is trying to steal your gift. Therapy, personal development, and studying God’s Word will help you discover your God-given gifts. How to Develop Confidence Before Patrice speaks, she still gets nervous and feels like a wreck. One trick she has learned is to make a joke early on. The smiles put her at ease. She’s always looking for ways to break the ice. Therapy has also helped her. She grew up believing she was ugly because people told her she was, but that’s not a story she has to own. Patrice notes that a big part of building confidence is simply in the doing--you have to practice using whatever gifts you’ve been given. Confidence, for Patrice, comes from knowing she’s genuine. She knows that this is the story God gave her and her responsibility is to share it. Her story is not about her. Tools Patrice Used to Help Her Understand Her Wiring Patrice is a self-proclaimed “assessment junkie.” She loves Gretchen Rubin’s “Four Tendencies.” She’s a questioner, and knowing this about her made so many things make sense. It gave a name to her way of being. One of the questions someone recently asked me was: What would you do today if you had to rebuild your life after a financial loss? And it got me thinking back to 2009 and my devastating bathroom floor moment. Now, if you’re new to Redefining Wealth, you might not know this story. So, let me quickly give you the gist. First, thank you to Experian for sponsoring this episode. All thoughts and opinions are my own. To learn more about Experian Boost as mentioned in this episode, visit Experian.com/patrice. Straight out of college, I built a 7-figure business. Then at the height of the recession, I went from making a million to scrounging for change in couch cushions, old purses – any and everywhere possible. Fortunately, though I was able to pick my life back up and rebuild everything. And if I had to do it again, I’d use the same tangible things we talk about on today’s podcast. Give Yourself Grace I know for many people who find themselves in financial despair, it can leave them ashamed, embarrassed and downright depressed. I know for me, when I lost everything, we’re talking foreclosure, repossession and creditors calling left and right, I felt guilty and ashamed and I beat myself up about the situation – wondering how could I have let this happen. You see, it’s so easy to fall into that beat-up mindset, BUT I want you to remember (and tweet) this vital point: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“You are not a failure simply because you find yourself in a failed circumstance.” – Patrice Washington" username="seekwisdompcw"] Now, a big part of Redefining Wealth is the Faith Pillar, and one thing that it has taught me is this: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“Nothing in life happened to me; instead, it happened for me.” – Patrice Washington" username="seekwisdompcw"] I want you to remember these two things and show yourself some grace. Yes, take personal responsibility and acknowledge what you could have done differently, but drop the shame and beat-up mindset because they’ll not serve you well at all. Instead, get curious. Think about what you could do differently in the future. What changes would you make? What might you notice sooner? Commit to a Plan One of the first things I remember doing in 2009 when everything was falling apart was to refocus and reflect on my goals at that moment. Not what they were back when I was making 7-figures, but what they were in that moment of financial scarcity. This approach is similar to the concept “So What, Now What” from my book Real Money Answers for Every Woman – meaning, “Okay, so this has happened, what are you going to do NOW?” In creating and committing to a plan, it’s essential to get clear on the “now” piece. What can I do now? What are my goals now? What is the next best step I can take now? What is my “why” now? The other part of this approach is having a why – a reason for working through your situation. The best advice I can give is to take it step-by-step and write everything down. What is your first goal? Is it to downsize and move into a smaller space? Is it to figure out your car situation? Is it to look at your budget? What is the new normal you’re willing to embrace? And what is the plan that goes along with that? In other words, for you to take your next best step, what do you need to do? Who do you need to call? Where do you need to go? What do you need to sacrifice? Add a Boost to Your Credit If you’re like many people, when you’re in a financial struggle, you avoid opening your mail, you stop answering the phone, and you likely avoid checking your credit report. Now, dodging your credit report is one of the worst things you can do. Why? Because credit is weaved into so much of your life – many opportunities you’ll have (or won’t have) are directly linked to your credit. Hill Harper, brand ambassador of the credit bureau, Experian, says this: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“The most important thing you can do is pay your bills on time and not take on too much debt.” – Hill Harper" username="seekwisdompcw"] Experian Boost is something I wish was around 10 years ago. It works by giving your credit a boost when you pay your household bills such as utility bills, cell phone bill, cable bill and others on time, every time. Until now, things like the electric, gas, water, cell phone, cable bills haven’t affected your credit score. But now that they can, you’ll have the chance to boost your score instantly with every on-time payment. While results will vary, if you’ve been through a lot and you want to have something that allows you to feel like you’re making progress, take advantage of Experian Boost by visiting Experian.com/patrice and get your quick win! Seek Support Sooner Rather than Later For me, the worst part of my financial trouble was the sense of loneliness. I felt I couldn’t tell anyone because of guilt and shame. I also felt people wouldn’t understand or respect me anymore. I felt alone and waited until my back was up against the wall before getting any help. It wasn’t until I was crying on the bathroom floor that I reached for my Bible and landed on Proverbs 17:16, “What good is money in the hands of a fool if they have no desire to seek wisdom? That was when it occurred to me: I’d been good at chasing money, but I had no idea how to ask for help. Once I opened up to the possibilities that were out there and asked for help, I realized the variety of resources available – and that was 10 years ago. Today, there are thousands of resources available at your fingertips. It’s literally that easy to find support, and I recommend doing it sooner rather than later because another minute spent trying to work through your struggles alone is another minute lost. “#Securethebag” is what we constantly see and hear on social media yet so many of us are unfilled and putting on a facade. Did you know that there is a connection between your finances and mental health? So, if you want to really secure the bag, make sure your mental health is in check! In fact, some individuals with bipolar disorder go on shopping splurges when they are in a manic episode. 86% of people who participated in a Money and Mental Health survey of nearly 5,500 people said that their financial situation made their mental health problems worse. Financial difficulties are linked to low mood, anxiety, guilt, panic attacks, insomnia, suicide ideation, and self-harm. Not to mention, stress can cause a heart attack and so many other health problems. To help me with today’s episode, I am joined with American’s Money Maven & Financial Expert Patrice Washington of The Redefining Wealth Podcast. Sisters in Loss Podcast: Miscarriage, Pregnancy Loss, & Infertility Stories
It is Sisters in Loss Fertility Awareness Month! One week in April is not enough to acknowledge the 1 in 10 women and couples who experience infertility. As black women this number is far less and I want to acknowledge those who struggle to get pregnant and stay pregnant during the month of April. In today's episode we have Patrice Washington, "America's Money Maven" who opens up and shares her infant loss story, secondary infertility journey, and how to Redefine Wealth. Patrice is a national recognized best selling author, transformational speaker, spokesperson, radio host and leading authority on personal finance, entrepreneurship and success for women. Patrice is the big sister in my head that gets me together, snatches my edges, and teaches me how to Chase Purpose and Not Money on her new weekly podcast called Redefining Wealth. In this interview Patrice shares her infant loss journey with us, how she lost everything during the recession while she was pregnant with her rainbow baby daughter, and how she is surrendering to God for her desire to have more children after experiencing secondary infertility.
