Hey guys, it's Lisa Bilyeu and I'm so frikin' excited about today's episode of Women of Impact with one of my close homies! If you feel like you have been holding onto a dream, trying so damn hard to make it happen, but wondering if it might be time to dream a new dream – this episode is for you!! My girl Patrice Washington is BACK, and while she's most known as “America's Money Maven” and an absolute QUEEN when it comes to finances and money confidence, A LOT has changed since the last time she was on the show! We get into alllllll the details in the episode, but the short version is that after 19 years with her husband, she recognized her marriage wasn't serving her anymore and decided to divorce him. Now divorced, dating, and in her 40s, Patrice is happier than ever because she made a different decision and did the work to pivot her life! As a result, she got her voice back, is living life on HER terms, and even has NEW vows that she keeps to HERSELF!! And in this episode, we are breaking down EXACTLY HOW she went from unhappy and romanticizing reality to radical honesty and doing the work to actually make a change to her situation!!! We also talk about: - The 5 beliefs that gave Patrice her voice back & how she PRACTICED speaking up for herself before she had the strength to do it in her marriage - How holding onto your identity can keep you trapped in your situation & how to reframe those beliefs that are keeping you stuck - Why asking yourself the hard questions is SO important, but why ACTING in accordance to your answers is EVEN MORE important So guys, consider this your alarm clock to frikin' WAKE UP, STOP submitting to the circumstances of your life, and DO THE WORK to change your situation and find happiness again. Patrice Washington And you talk about knowing in that, in that moment in my spirit, you have to surrender. I surrendered. It was like, well, I can't do anything for anyone else out there.” Patrice Washington “Surrender was not giving up but letting go.” Patrice Washington “When I have felt those nagging doubts and the different things that come up, surrender has been like a constant companion for me.” Patrice Washington “If I believe that all things do work together for the good of those who love the Lord, then I'm not exempt from that. That's my promise.” Patrice Washington I'm committed to the vision, but I don't care how I get there.” Patrice Washington “This year it's been, when God says move, I move and I ask questions later.” Patrice Washington “I'm just trying to get what I need to secure my mask because God already equipped me with whatever it is he needs for me to do. But if I'm not, if I'm not walking in that equipped place, I can't be anything for anybody else.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “Sloppy progress. “ Patrice Washington “The only thing that is going to create momentum is you doing.” Patrice Washington “If I knew who I would become and what it would take to get here, I probably wouldn't have started. “ “I just started praying for contentment.” Patrice Washington “But what I know about obedience is that blessings are tied to obedience, but I'm also like I already know that dude is about to blow my mind.” Patrice Washington “And so we think obedience is about when to be productive. And there's a big piece of obedience about when to be still.” Patrice Washington “Obedience with faith, God is living for that all day and twice on Sunday.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “I tell myself all the time that the how is God's job but then I find myself trying to tell God the how…”. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “The place of surrender and the commitment to obedience allows you to breathe.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “What would my life look like if I stopped playing with God?” Patrice Washington “Don't get excited about the outcome, get excited about the process.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “When God gives you something you won't need batteries.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon Last book Patrice read: How to Be Rich by Andy Stanley Favorite Quote: “Forgiveness is giving up the possibility of a better past.” Tool Patrice swears by to grow her business: Airtable How to Connect with Patrice Washington: Websites: www.patricewashington.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/seekwisdompcw Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/redefiningwealthcommunity/ Redefining Wealth Podcast: www.RedefiningWealthPodcast.com Redefinint Wealth Live: www.redefiningwealthlive.com Incredible One Enterprises, LLC is not responsible for the content and information delivered during the podcast interview by any guest. This is the one. This is the episode you need. Trust me. I've had a few interviews that keep competing for my all time favorite and there's no doubt that this one is one of them. There's a reason why Patrice Washington was named one of the most inspiring voices in personal development (two times!) by Success Magazine, and there is a reason that in her years as America's Money Maven, Patrice became known across many circles as the go-to resource for financial possibility. In this interview, you get to witness the evolution of someone who didn't just step into what she was good at, but actually embraced who she was called to be, and the countless doors that have opened since stepping into that. She's doing things a little bit differently and it's making a massive impact!Today's episode took us in directions I didn't anticipate but I am so thankful it did. Patrice and I go over what it means to redefine wealth and chase purpose over money, how to heed God's call even when it's scary and the possibility that can really come from it when you listen to where you're being guided. Walking through heart wrenching hardships, bringing our children into the fray of entrepreneurship and leading them into purpose. This is one of the most powerful conversations I ever had!Resources:Show notes: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/episode155Patrice's website https://patricewashington.com/starthere/ Connect with Patrice on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/seekwisdompcw/ Redefining Wealth Podcast https://patricewashington.com/listen/Connect with me:Website: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/Follow along on my Sabbatical journey: https://luminaryleadershipco.com/insider If there's a topic, a question or a guest you want to hear on the show or an idea you have for us, just reach out and share that at marketing@luminaryleadershipco.com.Connect with me on Instagram!Loved this episode? Patrice Washington is known as the Money Maven. She's an investor in Lite Pink, a fully female-funded product business. She spoke at the founder of Lite Pink Lori Harder's home about how people can define their wealth and bring purpose to their lives and their business. She learned, through her own financial journey of building a 7-figure business straight out of college, that building and running a business won't provide happiness if you're having to sacrifice your health and well-being in the process. She also learned that in order to redefine your wealth, you have to redefine parts of yourself. That's how she came up with her Six Pillars of Wealth. Patrice defines the Six Pillars of Wealth as: Fit: the importance of being mentally and physically fit People: creating relationships that matter Space: setting up your life to support you Faith: believing in something greater Work: living your life's purpose Money: achieving the abundance that you desire We do a deep dive into how leading your life from these pillars is what builds true wealth, and how you can level up these six aspects of your life. I just really love today's guest. Patrice and I have so much in common, which I didn't even realize before we talked. I just knew I had this like kindred spirit with her, and as we have this conversation, you're gonna see how so much of our story actually overlaps, even though they're drastically different. You're going to be shocked by her story as I was, but we're here to learn together. That's what this podcast is all about. Messy success stories, right? And everyone's version of success is different, no different than Patrice Washington, who is here to help us chase purpose, not money, and fulfillment, prosperity, and really, truly redefining wealth for this generation in such a unique way. After becoming wildly successful as a real estate broker in her early 20's, Patrice Washington hit a low point. Not low like your car broke down and your SO dumped you, but a real rock bottom where her entire life was turned upside down for several years. And yet, despite losing nearly everything she held dear, Patrice's faith in her ability to bounce back was unshaken. It wasn't quick and it wasn't easy, but Patrice knew that with her entrepreneurial background and her understanding of finances she could reinvent her career, going from the doldrums of a recession to becoming “America's Money Maven.” She is now a sought-after author, speaker, consultant and financial expert looking to redefine the way we consider wealth. Patrice will be the first to tell you that wealth doesn't start with money, it starts with a mindset, and when you align with your purpose and passion the money will follow. Thanks for listening! Welcome to the Flow and Flourish Podcast. This is what I like to call a “sister-friend” community, which is the safe space to talk openly and honestly about the challenges we face while managing the competing priorities between our personal and professional lives. Many of us are either in corporate, an entrepreneur of a combination of the two, on top of being moms, wives, caregivers, big sister's or just the go-to person in our circles of friends and families. Having all that responsibility can leave you overwhelmed and depleted if you don't take inventory of where you're at on a regular basis. In today's episode, I talk with my mentor, the one and only, Patrice Washington, about how she's making history all over the world! In 2020, SUCCESS Magazine named Patrice Washington one of 12 Inspiring Black Voices in Personal Development and she continues to be consistently called on for her expertise by national media. As an award-winning intuitive author, transformational speaker, hope-restoring coach, and conscious media personality, Patrice is committed to teaching a holistic approach to life while redefining the term “wealth” back to its original meaning, “well-being.” Patrice got her start as “America's Money Maven,” a widely-known favorite personal finance expert, but has since expanded her mission to encourage people to chase purpose, not money. She uses her Certification in Financial Psychology to help the masses get beyond budgets and credit reports and dive into the heart of why we behave the way we do with money. Through her Spirit-led teachings and intuitive guidance, Patrice empowers her community to look at life through the lens of abundance and opportunity, instead of lack and scarcity. As host of her award-winning “The Redefining Wealth Podcast,” Patrice has built a thriving international community of high-achievers committed to creating a fulfilled life through balancing their careers, home, health, and personal finances. Featured on Forbes.com as one of 15 Inspiring Podcasts for Professionals of Every Stripe," and highlighted by InStyle Magazine, SUCCESS magazine and Entrepreneur.com, the Redefining Wealth Podcast boasts over 10 million downloads and counting. She's doing things a little bit differently and it's making a massive impact! Today's episode took us in directions I didn't anticipate but I am so thankful it did. Patrice and I go over what it means to redefine wealth and chase purpose over money, how to heed God's call even when it's scary and the possibility that can really come from it when you listen to where you're being guided, walking through heart wrenching hardships, bringing our children into the fray of entrepreneurship and leading them into purpose. This is one of the most powerful conversations I ever had. Show Notes: Check out Amanda's Podcast: Make Money Your Honey Join her free Facebook Group Connect with Amanda on Instagram: @AmandaAbella Partial Transcript (Read the Full Transcript HERE): Kimberly Olson: All right. Welcome back to another episode of The Goal Digger Girl. I am so excited because I have a rock star sales woman here who is going to teach y'all how to make more sales and really feel confident in the process. So welcome on Amanda. Is it Abella? Is that how to say your last name? Amanda Abella: It's Abella. Kimberly Olson: Ooh, I like it. Abella. All right, girl. Well welcome on. We're so excited to have you. Amanda Abella: 00:24 I am so excited to be here. I'm thrilled. I think there's a great synergy between the audiences. 'Cause you talk about visibility and I talk about sales and I'm like, well! I mean if you have all these eyeballs on you, how do you convert them into money? So I think this is great. I'm super excited to talk about this. Kimberly Olson: This is so great. It's the perfect marriage. Yeah. And that's the thing. Like we do a lot with audience building and then they go, "but how do I actually close people?" And I teach funnel people to your Facebook group, love on them, nurture them, but there's still a gap between that and actually closing sales. So if you're new to anyone in my audience, can you share with everyone a little bit about you, your background? What got you into it? Amanda Abella: Yeah. So I am the CEO and founder of Make Money or Honey, which is a marketing and sales training company for creatives, coaches, and consultants. Women coaches, creatives, and consultants, I should say. And basically we help people with their system, influence and sales. So we'll help them build their intellectual property. We'll help them grow their influence. And then we actually teach you everything sales. Like I joke that our main program, sales is literally like half the program. And the reason I got here is because I've been in sales since I was 20, but nobody told me. So I was doing fundraising, I was a recruiter. That's what I was doing at my previous employment. I gave tours for my college, which was all about like sales presentation and getting donors and all that kind of stuff. And then I started my first business in 2010. I was actually a freelance writer. So I actually did marketing and freelance writing for financial companies, and financial brands, and financial websites for eight years. Kimberly Olson: Whoa. Amanda Abella: Yeah, that's what, that was my first business. And I started running into a problem around year six or seven where I was like, "Oh, I can't scale this". Kimberly Olson: And I'm so tired of writing. Amanda Abella: And I was so tired of writing and I was like- Kimberly Olson: I used to blog. Amanda Abella: Oh really? And a couple of editors kind of started turning into bosses and I have authority issues.
We Talk About: The true definition of wealth Passion vs Purpose Becoming your best self Replacing your limiting beliefs Accepting your purpose Resources: patricewashington.com Instagram: @seekwisdompcw Listen: Redefining Wealth Read: "Redefine Wealth for Yourself" Show Notes: After building a six-figure business only to lose it all during the 2008 recession, Patrice Washington felt like she had lost her way. In this conversation, we talk about redefining wealth, what that means, and how you can achieve it. Patrice is going to rock your world with relatable wisdom. Question Highlights: How did you begin talking about what it means to be wealthy? Let's talk about passion versus purpose. How do we nurture our best selves? How does it manifest for you when you're not taking care of yourself? How do you let go of expectations? What does it mean to accept your purpose? What does it look like to master the basics? Patrice Washington is an award-winning author, transformational speaker, hope-restoring coach, and media personality committed to redefining the term wealth using its original meaning of well-being. Patrice got her start as your favorite personal finance expert, ‘America’s Money Maven,’ but has since expanded her brand and mission to encourage people to chase purpose, not money. In 2020, Success Magazine named Patrice one of their 12 Inspiring Black Voices in Personal Development, and 2021 sees the release of her fifth book. Patrice joins me for the second time today to discuss why she has moved beyond pure personal finance and into encouraging others to embrace wealth in all areas of their lives holistically. She shares why she decided that 2021 was the right year to release her book, Redefining Wealth for Yourself, and outlines the six core pillars of wealth that she encourages her readers to explore and balance. Patrice also shares her wisdom on activating abundance and fostering an abundance mindset rather than a poverty mindset “Sometimes we need public accountability, we need to say things out loud, and just call a thing, a thing, put a name to it, so that we can really get the support and the love — oftentimes when we tell our stories, it is the very permission that someone else needs to tell their story or to own some part of their narrative, their truth, and not allow it to be weaponized.” - Patrice Washington This week on Paychecks and Balances:● The amazing community Patrice has built through her podcast Redefining Wealth and the type of content she shares with her ‘purpose chasers’ from all over the world ● Why it is essential to look for 365 degrees of accountability - how to get accountability and why you need to focus on the next thing rather than the next big thing ● Why you don't have to be a perfect 10 to share something that will be valuable to others and share the lessons you've gleaned from your experience and find the purpose in all parts of your journey● The story behind why Patrice has expanded her purpose to encompass a more holistic approach to wealth than just finances● The difference between walking the walk, talking the talk but not necessarily spending everything you have keeping up appearances● The mission behind Redefine Wealth for Yourself and how Patrice hopes to empower women to understand that the true definition of wealth is the condition of well being Connect with Patrice Washington:● Redefine Wealth for Yourself by Patrice Washington● Patrice Washington’s Website● Patrice Washington on Facebook ● Patrice Washington Instagram● Patrice Washington on Twitter● Connect with Paychecks and Balances:● Paychecks and Balances Website● Patreon Paychecks and Balances● Paychecks and Balances on Instagram● Paychecks and Balances on Facebook●

The Redefining Wealth Podcast boasts over 2 million downloads and counting! “Don’t get caught up in the pretty, in what looks good and what looks like money. Focus on the nitty-gritty of the numbers and what you can sustain even in your worst month.” Patrice Washington Worst investment ever Early real estate mogul Patrice was 19 years old when she got licensed as a real estate agent in California and quickly fell in love with the industry. During her senior year in college at the University of Southern California, Patrice got her broker’s license and became a real estate and mortgage broker. Her real estate business quickly took off and became a seven-figure business by the time Patrice was 25 years old. Riding on cloud nine Patrice was on top of the world. She and her now-husband and then-boyfriend were driving matching Range Rovers and owned almost 13 pieces of property collectively. They had 16 loan officers and real estate agents on their roster. They had all these things going for them, and they thought they ran the world, and it was a beautiful time. The one mistake that undid it all Around 2006 Patrice’s staff insisted on having an office to work from and fancy technology that would help them land more clients. She listened to them, and so they moved from the coworking space they were using to a larger office, almost 2,000 square feet, which they fully furnished. All these new changes took their overhead from about $2,000 to $14,000 a month. In 2007 the recession started to rear its ugly face. People were talking about the real estate bubble bursting. Other mortgage brokers in Patrice’s building were talking about giving up their office space and work from home. Patrice felt sorry for them, still oblivious of the looming crisis. The bubble bust In 2008 banks started closing down, and things got terrible at Patrice’s real estate business. At the time, Patrice was in hospital admitted because of a complicated pregnancy. She was so helpless and could only watch from her hospital bed as things went from bad to worse. There was no money coming in, and Patrice had to use their life savings to keep the company going. They exhausted their savings within a year. Within about 15 months, Patrice and her husband lost everything. They went from a 6,000 square foot home in Southern California to live in a 600 square foot tiny apartment. Lessons learned Prepare for the worst As an entrepreneur, you have to be prepared for the worst. Don’t plan your personal and professional life based on your top months, but your worst months. Your business and personal budget should be based on your worst performing months. Andrew’s takeaways There’s more to a business than sales Sales is just a function within the business, just like finance, accounting, and marketing. So when you decide to run your business, and you’re great at sales, remember that that’s one function within a company, you’ve got to take care of all the other parts. Make sure you have good people around you that are doing those other functions. Know where you are Most people, when starting a business, don’t necessarily know where they are in the economic cycle. You can’t know how to get to where you want to go if you don’t know where you are at. Spend enough time trying to understand where you are in the economic and profitability cycle so that you’re able to prepare for what will come in the future. Your employees are not always right It’s imperative to stay in touch with your employees and customers, but you have to remember that they may not necessarily be giving you the best advice about what you should be doing. Listening to your customers and employees is one input in your decision-making process. Actionable advice Don’t listen to the chatter; make decisions rooted in the numbers and the data. Always look at the bigger picture and think about life beyond today. You never know what’s coming around the corner. You want to be ready. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months Patrice’s number one goal for the next 12 months is to rest in the spirit of contentment and be present to everything that’s going on and make decisions rooted in faith, not fear. That’s my promise.” Patrice Washington I’m committed to the vision, but I don’t care how I get there.” Patrice Washington “This year it's been, when God says move, I move and I ask questions later.” Patrice Washington “I'm just trying to get what I need to secure my mask because God already equipped me with whatever it is he needs for me to do. But if I'm not, if I'm not walking in that equipped place, I can't be anything for anybody else.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “Sloppy progress. “ Patrice Washington “The only thing that is going to create momentum is you doing.” Patrice Washington “If I knew who I would become and what it would take to get here, I probably wouldn’t have started. “ “I just started praying for contentment.” Patrice Washington “But what I know about obedience is that blessings are tied to obedience, but I'm also like I already know that dude is about to blow my mind.” Patrice Washington “And so we think obedience is about when to be productive. And there's a big piece of obedience about when to be still.” Patrice Washington “Obedience with faith, God is living for that all day and twice on Sunday.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “I tell myself all the time that the how is God’s job but then I find myself trying to tell God the how…”. Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “The place of surrender and the commitment to obedience allows you to breathe.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “What would my life look like if I stopped playing with God?” Patrice Washington “Don’t get excited about the outcome, get excited about the process.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “When God gives you something you won’t need batteries.” Darnyelle Jervey Harmon “Patrice’s Incredible Factor Wisdom Questions: Last book Patrice read: How to Be Rich by Andy Stanley Favorite Quote: “Forgiveness is giving up the possibility of a better past.” Tool Patrice swears by to grow her business: Airtable How to Connect with Patrice Washington: Websites: www.patricewashington.com Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/seekwisdompcw Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/redefiningwealthcommunity/ Redefining Wealth Podcast: RedefiningWealthPodcast.com Incredible One Enterprises, LLC is not responsible for the content and information delivered during the podcast interview by any guest. Patrice Washington is a very successful podcaster with her podcast called Redefining Wealth. She talks about how it’s important to chase purpose, not money. She has over 900 iTunes reviews. Patrice made it clear that podcasting is her main platform but she also has a solid following on other platforms. She has about 70,000 Instagram followers, 30,000 YouTube subscribers, 20,000 Facebook followers, and 15,000 Twitter followers. She first started blogging in 2009. She did it for a few months and realized that no one was really paying attention. She stopped for a few weeks but there was a man, who she calls her angel that she will never forget, who reached out to her via email and told her what impact she has made in his life and essentially encouraged her to continue blogging. Patrice has been known as America’s Money Maven, a personal finance expert, for over a decade. She is most recognized as the personal finance voice of the top-rated and nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Radio Show. Her real why at this stage in life was to share with people that wealth was so much more than money and material possessions. Everything that she does now ties into helping people see the bigger picture of how their behavior, relationships, and rituals impact their finances. She started her podcast in September 2017. She realized that this on-demand type of opportunity might be the way to become a thought leader in her space, share what she cannot get out on a 45-minute radio segment, and share her true self without being policed by radio producers. It’s important for Patrice to share her story because she doesn’t want people to suffer the way she did. “I really feel like if you know something, it’s your responsibility to share it, to teach it, and to not give bits and pieces but to just go all out.” In this episode, Patrice really deep dives into her story of how and why she started her influence. Patrice's story is inspirational and this episode is definitely worth a listen! Subscribe to our email newsletter to be notified of our upcoming live-streamed interviews! We have been taught to go to school, get a good education so that you may get a good job and earn a good salary. This is a purpose inhibiting idea. In this episode of The Entrepreneurial You podcast, Patrice shares a lot on what redefining wealth really means - she's experienced having it all - and losing it, so she speaks with passion from a place of experience. Here is a snippet of what she shared on this episode of the podcast: Sick and tired of being sick and tired “I was just sick and tired of being sick and tired. I was tired of everything that I even attempted to do. Like I felt like doors were just being slammed shut in my face and I'm like, oh God, I'm a good person. And I've operated a good business. I did things in integrity. I don't feel like I was the cause of all of this. What is going on? And bawling, snorting, crying on the bathroom floor, till I hear what I call the Holy Spirit, say, “get your” Bible. And I got my Bible. I ended up on the Scripture, Proverbs 17:6, and it said, “What good is money in the hands of a fool? If they have no desire to seek wisdom, and that was the first time it hit me, that I have been very smart. I was very book smart. I went to a great university. Dean's list, got licensed at 21 certified at 22. All these great things. So I was great at information. But I didn't have wisdom which is the application of the information.” ---- Hot Point: When you are not working on your purpose, it is hard to set your financial priority. We celebrated our 100th episode a couple of weeks ago, and I thought now would be the perfect time to re-introduce the six pillars of Redefining Wealth. So, we’re doing a rewind to refresh your memory of what I mean when I say “redefining wealth.” Also, if ’you’re new here, Welcome! This episode will help you gain an in-depth understanding of what you can expect from the Redefining Wealth community. Before we dive in, I have a question for you: Did you know the original definition of wealth had nothing to do with money? Wealth, in its true origins, focused on an individual’s well-being, meaning it was about overall life happiness and fulfillment. And when I created Redefining Wealth, I did so in the spirit of the original meaning of “wealth”: “Wealth in our eyes is not about money and material possessions. It’s about well-being.” In the Redefining Wealth community, we seek to find well-being and fulfillment in many areas of our lives. Now, we recognize that if we don’t get clarity around those areas then sadly, we will always have challenges with money. In today’s episode, we’re going to cover the pillars that relate to well-being – the fit, space and faith pillars. And then next week, we’ll look at the wealth-building pillars. This episode is brought to you by Holistic Healing with Amy. If you need to talk to an expert about which foods can help you progress in the FIT Pillar and change your health once and for all, schedule a free call with Amy soon! Fit Pillar “Your health is your wealth.” I know, I know, when you hear “fit” you might immediately think of the “gym.” But the fit pillar is SO much more than that – it’s working out on a whole new level. Think about it like this, if you’re an entrepreneur or you work a 9-5, you’re earning money every day. Are you earning money so you can simply spend it on prescriptions that you can’t pronounce? Or, are you earning money so you can spend it on health issues that are threatening your life? NO! You see, each of us is called into this world to do something special with our lives. And in order to do that, we need a body that is capable of executing our vision and purpose in life. If we don’t protect our body how we should, we weaken our ability to fulfill our vision, at least in its full capacity. Are you thinking about your life? Not just in terms of the goals you want to accomplish, but in a way that forces you to reflect on whether you’re physically capable of seeing this thing to the end? And when you hit your goals and see your visions come to fruition, are you able to walk in it, live in it, enjoy it? Or are you going to be in a hospital somewhere? “We all have a vision. The problem is, we’re not preparing our body – physically or mentally – to see that vision all the way through.” Space Pillar You’ve heard that time is money, right? It’s true and the Space Pillar is all about setting up a life that supports maximizing your time. Think of it this way, how many people do you know who operate from a space or environment that is cluttered and messy. There’s so many and what they don’t realize is that by living in that clutter, they end up wasting time and therefore lose out on money because of the lack of clarity their space produces. According to Newsweek, the average American wastes 55 minutes a day looking for things they own but can’t find. “55 minutes a day.” That’s 12 days a year. I bet you could do a lot in those 12 days if you had them back. Take a vacation. Read a few books. Lie on a beach and forget your troubles. Or, pamper yourself till you think you’ve hit heaven. Forbes, too, says the typical executive wastes 150 hours searching for lost information. That’s almost an entire month lost when they could have spent those hours making money or going to the gym or taking cooking classes. “Clutter is the physical manifestation of confusion in the mind.” For me, every time I swim in confusion, I take a step back and examine the physical area around me. I ask, "where is the clutter?" I do this because I know my wealth correlates with my ability to clear confusion from my life. What this means is, if YOU want the freedom to create, think and manifest what you want out of life, you must first clear away the clutter. Faith Pillar I would not be America’s Money Maven. I would not be a bestselling author. I would not be a media personality. I would not be sitting here in my home studio completely restored from where I was in 2009 – if it were not for my faith. The whole lesson behind the faith pillar is about believing in something greater than the world around you. It’s about realizing there’s something bigger at work and that in general, things don’t happen to you, they happen for you. In fact, when I think about my life, all the greatest lessons I’ve learned have come from some type of challenge or failure. It’s like Winston Churchill says, “Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” And for me, my faith is my enthusiasm. It’s the belief that there is something greater. That there is a bigger purpose at work and that nothing is ever happening to me, but it’s happening for me. “Life is only 20% of what happens to us and 80% of how we choose to respond to what happens.” My faith is the primary reason I don’t chase money. Instead, I chase purpose. When you’re not in alignment with something greater – with faith – it can be tough to see a life that doesn’t require chasing money. I know because you feel like everything will be better when you have money, and then it’s not. What you need is purpose. I hope you’ve enjoyed this rewind of the Fit, Space + Faith pillars. Here’s three favorite episodes from each pillar, so that you don’t have to dig and dig to find more: FIT Pillar Faves Dr. Thema: Stop Suffering in Silence The Power of No Comparison Brandi Harvey: Your Roots Create Your Results SPACE Pillar Faves: Egypt Sherrod: Simplicity Drives Success Are You In a Money Making Space? I can’t believe this is already our 100th episode. It feels like yesterday that I reluctantly stumbled into the world of podcasting. And now, nearly two years later, here we are. If you’re new here and looking for hardcore advice on things like budgeting and investing, this is not that type of money podcast. You see, Redefining Wealth is about getting you prepared for those types of podcasts – the money ones I mean. It’s about helping you understand that wealth is so much more than just money and material possessions. “There’s much more to wealth than chasing money. At Redefining Wealth, we unpack and explore all the different ways money connects to our lives.” This episode is brought to you by Radical Success Certification Program. Knowing When Your Season Is Up To celebrate our 100th episode, I want to take you back to just before I launched Redefining Wealth. I was in a great place. My career was going great. For the most part I was fulfilled with what I was doing. I was making good money, doing good work, helping and serving people, and yet, the truth is, my season was up. “What if your season has long expired and you’re extending it out of fear, complacency or delusion?” Now, I’ll be honest, Redefining Wealth was not something I’d planned on doing. The idea of starting a podcast had crossed my mind a couple of times, but it always seemed like too much work. And there was also a fear that people might not get or want it. After all, I had been known as a personal finance expert for years, and while I still incorporate the term wealth, I rarely talk about those hardcore money topics anymore. I lacked confidence. I also thought I lacked the credibility to go deeper into the money topic – to look at how money connects to all the other areas of our lives. But here’s what I learned: It doesn’t matter how credible you are on paper, what matters is how you feel. A Season Doesn’t Have to Be Bad to Mean It’s Time for a Change Sometimes we think that a situation has to be awful in order for us to move on. But here’s the thing, purpose evolves and I don’t believe any of us are meant to do the exact same thing in the exact same way our entire lives. “We’re meant to evolve and if we don’t move when our season is up, then we go bankrupt emotionally, mentally, spiritually, financially.” For me, I was in a space where I was content. I was America’s Money Maven. I had a weekly segment for years on the Steve Harvey Morning Show. I was doing other shows like Dr. Oz and being featured by publications like Cosmopolitan, the New York Post and Essence Magazine. I had a good name as a money expert. Why would I change all of that? How to Know When Your Season Is Up First of all, I experienced what I call the boulder effect. It started out as a pebble, as it always does. For me, well it looked like me getting annoyed going on all of these talk shows and talking about budgets and credit reports when I knew that money and wealth was much more than those things. I kept thinking, “If they ask me one more thing about a budget, I’m going to snap!” Money is not about a template, it’s about your behaviors. It’s about your mindset. It’s so much bigger than a budget, and yet, I’d go, get on the couch, smile and do what I was brought there to do. Then came the rock. My website got hacked. Not hacked in the sense that it redirected to a naughty site or something like that, but hacked in the sense that the hacker went in and deleted files and content, and changed the language. It was bad, and even though the hosting company restored the site, it was a shell of what it had been – so much of my content was gone. Then came the boulder. I received a letter stating that Real Money Answers, my entire brand, was infringing on someone else’s copyright. What?! I didn’t understand and from what I knew, I’d had Real Money Answers trademarked for quite a while. What I learned through this process, however, was that my attorney had dropped the ball, and I didn’t actually have Real Money Answers trademarked. It was like one nightmare after another, and I knew it was time for a change. What Began as a Dream Turned into a Chore Another way I knew my season was up was that opportunities that once felt like a dream had turned into a chore. They didn’t excite me anymore. Perhaps one of my friends describes this best, “You know what it is?” she said. “I’ve tried to romanticize the fact that this thing started as a dream so that I could survive a toxic environment.” Ding, ding, ding. I know exactly what she means. As an entrepreneur, if you have consistent contracts or clients, you can chain yourself to something and start to believe that IT is your source. In all actuality though, you’re trying to force it to remain or to be the source because you want to romanticize the opportunity based on how it started out. “Not everything that starts out one way will end the same way, and not because the environment changes, but because we change.” The truth is we can make anything look, feel or seem like a dream opportunity if we have an agenda. That’s the space I was in before finally accepting the call to let go and start Redefining Wealth. “Purpose evolves and you have the right to say goodbye to one season and hello to another – that is part of the journey.” If I can leave you with anything, it’s to be honest and real with yourself. If you’re in the midst of a boulder effect or if you know that what began as a dream has turned into a chore, I want you to know it’s okay to surrender and accept that the season is up. Lastly, I want to add that one of my clients, Danielle Joseph, has a whole program on seasons and she further explains how you can go from one season to the next in different areas of your life at different times. What do you do when you feel like God is asking you to pivot in your life or business? How do you build confidence when you feel like your lacking in an area? And how can you redefine the concept of wealth in your life? Podcast guest, author, speaker, coach, and media personality Patrice Washington shares her insights into leadership, how to trust God through transition, and how to build confidence in your calling. If you’re struggling with trust, change, and what to do next, Patrice shares insight after insight in this episode. Patrice’s Leadership Journey Patrice is America’s Money Maven, but she didn’t start out with that title. She launched her business as a real estate and mortgage broker at the age of 21, but when the recession hit, she lost everything. God led her to Proverbs 17:16 and from there she launched a blog, pursued wisdom, and looked for books to help her define who she was. She was greatly impacted by Talane Miedaner’s book Coach Yourself to Success, which encourages the reader to look back in time to help her discover her purpose. Patrice realized that she had been a leader since she pursued a Student Council position in third grade, a time when she didn’t feel confident. She knew from a young age that she could help if just given the chance. When she ran her first business, Patrice understood that she was a boss because she had employees, but she’s since realized she’s a leader in her business within the past few years. She realized that if people trusted her, she couldn’t be haphazard and must lead with intention. Patrice reminds us that it’s time for Spirit-led, faith-filled people to step up and lead. Christians are sprinkled everywhere to lead people everywhere, but we get timid about sharing our faith. How Faith has Played a Role in Her Leadership Faith has always been a part of who she is. She tells event planners and media schedulers who ask her to speak that spirituality is a part of her; it’s a pillar in her life. She must talk about it. She feels that her job is to plant seeds and to tell the truth about her story. We don’t lead people by beating people up, convincing them, or convicting them. We lead by example. How Patrice Defines Leadership Leadership, according to Patrice, is being the example of the path. Being a leader means that you are clear, authentic, Spirit-led, and can articulate the vision. Patrice’s Advice for Younger Leaders Give yourself permission to be awesome, to be all God made you to be, and still be a hot mess. Trusting God Through Transition Since 2009, Patrice has called herself the Money Maven until other people believed that about her. She’s appeared on Fox News, The Dr. Oz Show, and Steve Harvey. She realized that in order to rebuild wealth, you can’t just focus on budgets and savings. In 2017, the Holy Spirit said that she must tell the whole truth. Sometimes the Holy Spirit calls us to pivot or transition, and we may wonder why He wants to interrupt our current success. God called Patrice to transition her business from focusing on money to focusing on the idea of “redefining wealth”. Redefining your wealth is so much more than just money and material possessions. The true definition of wealth (from the Bible) is well-being. Patrice built Redefining Wealth on six pillars: FIT, meaning your physical health PEOPLE, which includes your relationships and connections SPACE, honoring the time you have FAITH, meaning your relationship with God WORK, involves living out your gifts and talents MONEY, which is your financial situation Patrice shares some examples of how God has taught her lessons in the various pillars of Redefining Wealth. She has seen how valuable relationships are, for example, and has learned the value of simply treating people well. How Patrice Developed Redefining Wealth The Holy Spirit drove her message. He asked her to get out of her comfort zone, but getting out of the box is frightening. But Patrice obeyed and looked at her life and the patterns and practices that had helped her achieve success. She wrote out 200 ideas that later became podcast episodes. Then she moved those ideas into categories. She saved the money and faith pillars toward the end intentionally because she wants her audience to do the work and not just wait on God without taking responsibility for their lives. What Happens When You Need to Pivot Patrice had a previous business, Real Money Answers, when the Holy Spirit prompted her to start her current business, Redefining Wealth. She used her existing platform to pivot. As she transitioned from Real Money Answers to Redefining Wealth, she took down all her old products so she had no income. She used her savings to finance her new venture. During her launch time, lots of previous venues turned her down. She had a strong conviction and stuck with it. Her time of transition and pivoting forced her to re-evaluate who she was as a businesswoman and to become independent of what other people think. Patrice reminds us to not give up just because other people don’t understand. Our job is to relentlessly communicate the message we’ve been given. Building Confidence in Your Calling A lot of us struggle to build confidence or discover our gifts and calling because we’re in comparison mode. Negative words or experiences about our natural giftings come easily. For example, Patrice’s gift is speaking, but she got in trouble in school for talking too much. It only makes sense that your gifts will be attacked by your enemy who is trying to steal your gift. Therapy, personal development, and studying God’s Word will help you discover your God-given gifts. How to Develop Confidence Before Patrice speaks, she still gets nervous and feels like a wreck. One trick she has learned is to make a joke early on. The smiles put her at ease. She’s always looking for ways to break the ice. Therapy has also helped her. She grew up believing she was ugly because people told her she was, but that’s not a story she has to own. Patrice notes that a big part of building confidence is simply in the doing--you have to practice using whatever gifts you’ve been given. Confidence, for Patrice, comes from knowing she’s genuine. She knows that this is the story God gave her and her responsibility is to share it. Her story is not about her. Tools Patrice Used to Help Her Understand Her Wiring Patrice is a self-proclaimed “assessment junkie.” She loves Gretchen Rubin’s “Four Tendencies.” She’s a questioner, and knowing this about her made so many things make sense. It gave a name to her way of being. SUMMARY Patrice is famously known as America’s Money Maven. Shes a speaker and author who’s been on the Steve Harvey show a number of times and hosts her own podcast called Redefining Wealth where she discuss how you can change the way you approach financial success.
"Wealth is about more than money." This week's episode features my conversation with "America's Money Maven," Patrice Washington, about living intentionally, creating a better mindset about money, and making a life that matters.
Money doesn’t guarantee fulfillment and today’s guest, Patrice Washington, is hoping more women catch on. As an award-winning author, transformational speaker, hope-restoring coach, and media personality, she started her first 7-figure mortgage-brokering business with her husband before graduating college. Their business was wildly successful until the recession crashed and they lost everything. Picking herself up after this experience, she realized that she had a lot of knowledge but needed to seek more wisdom. She dug deep and knew it was more important to chase her purpose – not money. She discovered that life is about so much more – relationships, your well-being and your faith to name a few. Recognizing the power of this discovery, she created the 6 Pillars of Redefining Wealth, and now teaches others how they can tie each pillar back to producing wealth – and stay true to who they’re called to be. I had such a great time talking with Patrice – she is such a down-to-earth, purpose-driven woman who relies on faith and her own unique calling to help others find theirs as well. The idea of lifestyle design may seem great in theory, but how do you go about achieving your ideal life from where you are right now? A lot of it comes down to clarity, and not just in the generic sense like, I want to be more happy or I want to have more freedom—although these things are equally important. That's why I'm super excited to introduce you to Cassie Parks and her work on lifestyle design strategy and money mindset! She's got some great tools to help you create and realize some of your cherished goals and dreams. Who is Cassie? Cassie Parks retired at age 32, and not because she won the lottery. Cassie leveraged the practical magic of positive thinking, financial education and focus on her goal of financial independence to create the opportunity to walk out of her job for the last time and begin living her dream of being a Life Coach. Although she’s more than a Life Coach. She’s a Lifestyle Design Strategist and a Money Maven. The biggest reason she sees people not experiencing success with money is that they haven’t defined their own version of success. Lifestyle design is about figuring out what’s important to you and designing a life (including financially) that supports that vision. Without a vision (one people think they can attain), people spend aimlessly and continue to live in financial chaos. Cassie is the best selling author of the Champagne Life Series and more recently, Manifest $10,000: Learn How to Manifest $10,000 by Using the Law of Attraction and Improving Your Money Mindset. Quotes from Cassie It’s not about going up to bat thinking that you can, it’s about never thinking that you can’t. The parallel to money mindset is when you really make a shift. You're not trying to convince yourself you can have more money, you're never thinking it's not possible. You just go through the day different when you think that. (4:20) I think the traits of the people that are successful is that they have the ability to get clear and they know themselves because where I see people get off is that they’re chasing someone else’s dream. (10:11) What You’ll Learn Before she became a full time life coach, she did these art of living "as if" practices. She would take a day off every so often and practice being a coach while she was still at her 9-5 job. She would practice waking up later and doing coaching calls so that she would know what that would feel like. The more you step into becoming what you want more of in life, the more you see what’s possible. The importance of having clarity in your own vision. It really has to come from inside and make you feel happy and fulfilled. Getting clear on the details will help you design the life that you want. Focus on what you want as opposed to what you don't want. For example, what are you going to do, be or have once you’re out of debt? Are you going to travel more? Focus on that because then you’re moving TOWARDS or manifesting something rather than pushing AWAY from something.
