    REBROADCAST Ep 67 Workplace Inconsistencies

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 15, 2024 29:54

As a topic that keeps resurfacing, we're replaying part of Episode 67, which focuses on workplace inconsistencies and how to reduce and eliminate them. Whether it's inconsistencies within the employee handbook, enforcement of policies and procedures, or inconsistency with getting work done at the time, quality, and attention expected and for the intended purpose—inconsistency unravels the fabric of relationships (professional and personal). Inconsistency causes a breakdown in trust. Trust is built on consistency. We share two real-life workplace examples of two employees facing work environments and managers who are inconsistent. In one scenario, we examine and address inconsistent training and policies. In a second scenario, we examine and address a manager's inconsistent nature and inconsistent follow-through, techniques, practices, and more. We share suggestions on how to handle these, similar, and other issues in your workplace. We address some management areas where senior leaders need to pay close attention, and we share a list of workplace "no-nos" where inconsistency rears its ugly head and bites you.SHOW INFORMATION: Company: Foreman & Associates, LLCWebsite: https://ForemanLLC.comIG: https://instagram.com/ForemanLLCPodcast IG: https://instagram.com/DontCallitSmallFB: https://facebook.com/ForemanAndAssociatesTwitter: https://twitter.com/ForemanLLCPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/ItAintSmallYouTube: https://youtube.com/user/ForemanAssociates HOST: Natasha L. We examine the distractions in life, the choices we make to be distracted, and the excuses we make for not getting things done because we were distracted. There's a difference between helping and enabling. We know it. We say it. But somehow, some way, we find ourselves in a trap, a big ole thorny pit called enablement. In today's episode, we're examining the difference between helping and enabling and how to set healthy boundaries and rules of engagement, to build healthier relationships with the people we want to see succeed and thrive. In this episode, we're not going to speak about any specific behaviors, such as those associated with addiction and addicts. We'll speak to you, the one who is doing the enabling. We're focusing on you and your choices to enable the behavior. This isn't about shame or guilt. It's about us taking responsibility, being accountable for what we say and do, and holding others accountable.Let's discuss the hamster wheel you have created and keep it in motion. Let's talk about what happens when you stand in the gap and keep an adult from taking responsibility. This episode examines various examples of how this affects money management, household responsibilities, work duties, parenting, and more. When do you go from helper to enabler? We discuss that in this episode.Do you know there's love in the word "No," and sometimes there's more love in "No" than "Yes"? Listen in to hear how to lovingly say no and set healthy boundaries. Enabling leads to greater stress and anxiety, lower well-being, health issues, and toxic relationships. Enabling harms you and the person you think you're helping. Episode 84 also shares three businesses that we think you should support and share with your network. In this episode, we're going to talk about why we should not live for others' approval and why we should stop living through them and think that our efforts can sustain or elevate them, thereby positioning us to live for them. Our life is ours. And yes, it can be our mission to serve others, to teach and uplift others, but it's their mission to do whatever work is required of them, to do what they're supposed to do. Our natural inclination to do this is tied to seeking approval from the parental and familial figures we were raised with, and it flowed into the relationships we had with our teachers and coaches, and wanting to gain their approval, acceptance, and be told that good, great, worthy, etc. But when do you start living for yourself? When do you start stamping yourself with your own stamp of approval? This episode explores motivations for goal attainment, gift-giving, philanthropy, and more. We discuss the traps of living vicariously through others and how parents can be the biggest obstacle in their child's life. We also discuss the conditions we keep placing on love and our relationships with the people we should protect. And we outline some suggestions from mental health professionals and life coaches with ways to stop living for others and living other people's lives. We also shout out some hard-working, smart-working people and the companies they've built to bring you the products and services you desire.BUSINESS SHOUT-OUTSSHOUT-OUT #1 LAUNDRY JETHeadquartered in Oroville, CA, They're revolutionizing how laundry is done. Today's episode discusses the topic of success and redefining it on your terms. How do you define success? Are you living your life based on your definition, pursuing and embracing success, based on your terms? Join us as we examine how our minds were first shaped to believe success to be the achievement of goals, dreams, grades, titles, positions, and wealth. We look at how we were molded in high school and wrongly taught about failure and success, and where and how to achieve success. This molding process is what we carried into college, our professional world, and our personal relationships. Join us through our exploration of career and life paths, and the stigmas that we have placed on certain sectors, industries, and jobs, like janitorial and fast food service providers, yet celebrate the multi-billion dollar companies that create those same jobs. We'll take trips down memory lane and follow the steps of the McDonald brothers and the founders of Burger King. In this episode we address one of the biggest stigmas attacking students and families— the belief that technical education and attending technical, trade, and community colleges is inferior to attending a four-year college or university. Career and Technical Education classes (CTE) have been stigmatized for decades, yet we're seeing that people are lacking the technical skills to pursue and succeed in various jobs and careers that are in demand. With tuition hikes every few years, the cost of education at many four-year institutions is staggering, yet many parents have scoffed at the idea of their children attending two-year institutions, trade schools, to earn the degrees and certificates that could potentially catapult and fast-track them in their careers. In this episode we will address the commentary, talk numbers, run through scenarios, provide insight from a college professor, examine the industries and the marketplace, and consider the risks and returns of bypassing the technical education and jobs, versus running straight towards them in full-embrace.And of course, we're shouting out some professionals and businesses!BUSINESS SHOUT-OUTSSHOUT-OUT #1 Mike's Mobile, Inc.Serving CaliforniaProvides security screen doors, window screens, repairs on fireplaces and chimneys, and more. Today's episode deals with the three D's: divorce, death, and (other) devastation. This isn't an episode of drab and gloom but one of inspiration and hope. When we get clobbered by life we tend to feel and see the ramifications in all areas and aspects of our personal world. So let's talk about how we can face the things and circumstances that have caused us so much pain and rebuild through healing and acceptance of the facts and the truth. Our host, Natasha Foreman, shares her experiences, lessons learned, and the ups and downs of trying to grieve and heal through her own divorce, the numerous deaths of loved ones, the loss of a business, health scares, and other devastating events that she has experienced. Episode 75 discusses the foundational truths that we stand on to rebuild, we examine the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. There are plenty of us that are in denial about our grief and we get angry when someone identifies it and expresses their concerns. This episode outlines some key areas that we should pay close attention to as we grieve, heal, and rebuild: career/business, social media, news/media, personal interactions, and how we spend our time and the environments we choose. We discuss the power of hope, our thoughts, and how they help with our healing. It's a candid look at something facing many of us, and when we choose to hide from it and not speak openly about it, we further give power to the shadows that haunt millions of people each day.So join us in this episode as we explore this and more. One of many talks we hope to have through this podcast. And of course, after spending time talking about hope, we shouted out some cool people and businesses that we hope you will support.SHOUT-OUT #1 Shameema Abdul ShukoorDubaiFood and product photographer, and food stylistHer work speaks for itself. Since we tend to spend more time at work and with coworkers, than we do at home with family, it's understandable that we find ourselves sharing more of our personal experiences with those we work with. In many ways, they're like your extended family or a different category of friends. Hence why people say things like, "That's my work wife/husband".It's natural to share, commune, and connect. We're social creatures. The problem slithers in and slaps us in the face when we begin oversharing in the workplace. We find ourselves faced with the consequences of foot-in-the-mouth syndrome, and we don't know how to fix it. We forget that there are boundaries and that we're not to cross them. Let's explore the Do's and Don'ts of sharing in the workplace, examine the various topics that you should filter or just steer clear of, and how to have healthy connections with co-workers, employees, and managers. A questioned was posed as to how someone could become a better manager-leader, so we addressed it in today's episode. We share what you should do for yourself, your team, and your organization. We provide various tools, resources, and tips that you can use. We outline how to revamp your thinking, approach, practice, and habits (especially the annoying ones). We share the ways to engage with other team members, the responsibility and accountability you have assumed by taking on a manager-leader role, the Do's and Don'ts of leading and managing, and the intentional steps that you must take to build the type of relationships within your organization that catapults you from average to exceptional leader. It doesn't matter if you're just starting out as a manager-leader or if you have been whirling around in this rodeo for decades, everyone should strive to be a better manager-leader. Anyone who thinks that they have mastered it, are the best, and don't need to improve, also don't realize they're the emperor with no clothes. Have you gone so far as to spend hours searching through friends' and strangers' timelines? Are you in awe of the number of likes, shares, and comments that people have on their posts? And the number of followers, subscribers, members, friends they have? Do you sit back and then look at your life, social media profiles, career, marriage, family, bank account, body, relationships, home, vehicle, and children—and start comparing what you have to others?Today's episode is going to start unpacking the differences between comparison that leads to inspiration and motivation and the type of comparison that leads to feelings of inferiority and, ultimately, depression. We will share commentary from seasoned psychologists, the leading theory that summarizes this self-evaluation we're doing, and more. We'll present different scenarios, like comparing yourself to a random stranger on the street to comparison with a celebrity or social media influencer, how we compare ourselves to people we think are above us, equal to us, or beneath us. We'll even walk through those muddy waters of comparing the past to the present, like comparing yourself to your significant other's exes, and that's just for starters. We'll explore how the comparison trap can lead to increased and even toxic competition, shame, guilt, self-adulation, self-deprecation, anxiety, and degrees of depression. We're going to talk about the "I'll be happy when...." fallacy, what happiness is and isn't, and some suggestions for how to positively "stay in your own lane" while celebrating and honoring other people's achievements and accomplishments, talents, and gifts. And of course, we're shouting out some professionals and businesses!MENTIONSDr. Alduan Tartt https://instagram.com/drtarttPrincess Peoples https://instagram.com/styleeccentricsoulsBUSINESS SHOUT-OUTSSHOUT-OUT #1Melissa Simmons, CEO & PublisherDiversity Professional Magazine An interactive national publication focused on business, career & lifestyle.https://DiversityProfessional.comhttps://facebook.com/1DPNationhttps://instagram.com/1DPNationhttps://twitter.com/1DPNationSHOUT-OUT #2QLoveStylesPersonal shopper & wardrobe stylistHelping to cater a look specifically to your style for commercial events and private occasions.https://QLoveStyles.comhttps://instagram.com/QLoveStyleshttps://facebook.com/QLoveStyleshttps://twitter.com/QLoveStylesSHOUT-OUT #3Tim & Stormi Covington (husband & wife dynamic duo)Owners of Son Kissed GatheringsThey style parties and luxury picnics and specialize in intimate gatherings. Also a balloon boutique! They have an AirBNB: Covington Cottagehttps://sonkissedgatherings.comhttps://instagram.com/sonkissedgatheringshttps://facebook.com/sonkissedgatheringsAirBNB IG: https://instagram.com/covingtoncottageSHOW INFORMATION:Company: Foreman & Associates, LLCWebsite: https://ForemanLLC.comIG: https://instagram.com/ForemanLLCPodcast IG: https://instagram.com/DontCallitSmallFB: https://facebook.com/ForemanAndAssociatesTwitter: https://twitter.com/ForemanLLCPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/ItAintSmallYouTube: https://youtube.com/user/ForemanAssociatesHOST: Natasha L. Whether it's inconsistencies within the employee handbook, enforcement of policies and procedures, or inconsistency with getting work done at the time, quality, attention expected, and for the intended purpose—inconsistency unravels the fabric of relationships (professional and personal). Inconsistency causes a breakdown in trust. Trust is built on consistency. We share two real-life workplace examples of two employees facing work environments and managers who are inconsistent. In one scenario we examine and address inconsistent training and policies. In a second scenario we examine and address the inconsistent nature of a manager and their inconsistent follow-through, techniques, practices, and more. This episode is focused on some of the layers that goes into recruiting underrepresented groups (URGs) such as those distinguished by ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status, the differently-abled, and the previously incarcerated. We look through the historical lens and take into consideration the growing trend within companies to address Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) through creation of jobs and roles, and establishing Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), etc. We reflect back on Episode 54 when we discussed the DEIJ bandwagon, and all of the reasons why companies need to assess why they are now being proactive in seeking and establishing a diverse and inclusive workplace, even if they may not necessarily be pursuing the equity and justice needed to tear down and keep down the barriers that have created the division, inequity, and injustices in our workplaces and communities. We share some examples of what to do and what not to do when earnestly pursuing a change of this magnitude. We sort through the various excuses that people and companies make to avoid recruiting and hiring various URGs. We share examples of bias, discrimination, and how it's important that individuals and companies audit their recruitment, hiring, promotion efforts to ensure that there is an elimination of these practices that are excluding quality and qualified candidates. We provide tips and suggestions for companies who are contemplating making steps to cast a wider recruitment net. We also provide tips for companies that have already started but in need of pointers. There's more that we shared, you have to listen in to hear for yourself! And of course, we shouted out some businesses...BUSINESS SHOUT-OUTSBUSINESS #1Mathews & Co.Printing and embroidery company in Houston, TXThey ship worldwidehttps://mathewsandco.comhttps://instagram.com/mathewsncoBUSINESS #2A Lil Something SweetCookie makerTeen-owned business in San Diego, CACottage food licensedhttps://instagram.com/alilsmthsweetEmail to place an order: mailto:alilsmthsweetcookies@gmail.com She's working on her websiteAll sets start at $50/dozenSHOW INFORMATION:Company: Foreman & Associates, LLCWebsite: https://ForemanLLC.comIG: https://instagram.com/ForemanLLCPodcast IG: https://instagram.com/DontCallitSmallFB: https://facebook.com/ForemanAndAssociatesTwitter: https://twitter.com/ForemanLLCPodcast Twitter: https://twitter.com/ItAintSmallYouTube: https://youtube.com/user/ForemanAssociatesHOST: Natasha L. Get your notebooks and something to write with. Grab something to drink and snack on, because we're about to get real with your career, about your career, and about YOU. In this episode and next week's episode, we're going to look at your professional development and some paths that you consider, and the barriers and opportunities before you.Episode 61 will lay the groundwork and we will start peeling back layers. Episode 62 will do more exploratory work. We're not endorsing any particular employer, field, or industry. That's not what this episode is about. Guess what? Episode 62 won't be focused on that either. And before you can consider which career path to choose, which door of opportunity to walk through, you gotta get real with yourself. In this episode, we're looking at YOU because honestly, it's not so much about the organization as it is about YOU getting grounded in YOURself. YOU need to know what YOU want and need and what YOU want to learn and contribute before you select an organization to court or be courted by, or to create as your own. Because this is a heavy topic we are segmenting this conversation across Episodes 61 and 62. Episode 61 breaks down two career wells or "buckets" and three basic pathways. The most familiar and common pathway is as an employee. When you don't want to work for a specific company but want to work for various clients so that you have greater flexibility in how and where your knowledge and skills are used and applied you pursue one of two routes: - Entrepreneur - Freelancer In today's episode, we're exploring the ins and outs and some do's and don'ts of freelancing and entrepreneurship. We will address some traps and tricks, misnomers, misunderstandings, and more. Tune in for tips, suggestions, and lessons. How many freelancers and entrepreneurs do you know? How many did you grow up around? How many mentored you when you were a child? The greater your exposure the higher the probability you align your career along with one of those pathways. If you had limited exposure then you probably have more questions than answers. Our host, Natasha, shares her experiences, reflections, and counsel. And of course, like every episode, we're sharing some bold quotes spoken by some bold people. You have to listen in to hear them!Sneak Peek...In Episode 62 we will explore the employee pathway with greater intensity as some of you are looking at opportunities to change career paths but remain as employees. We will also look specifically at the skills, tools, and resources that you need. Ep 56 Customer Engagement 101- Setting the Rules of Engagement

Many of us have heard and said, "the customer is always right" and with that statement comes a level of understanding that customers can do and say whatever they want, and the workers and company must comply to meet their wishes, with hopes of having a satisfied and returning customer. Today's episode is going to explore, dissect, and pivot from this approach to customer engagement and relationship-building to bring you some bold and risky leadership moves that challenge this old and lop-sided way of working with customers. We share examples of customer relation red flags, how managers let their employees down, and what we can do better to ensure that our employees are inspired, motivated, and empowered to do their jobs with excellence while feeling the support they need to provide a service to a demanding customer base, who is also engaged in a way that motivates them to respect and support the workers that serve them.We discuss setting ground rules, determining deal breakers, accountability to and with stakeholders, realigning your work relationship to create better balance which includes your employees as your top priority, and seeing how Southwest Airlines and other successful companies have been able to put employees first and still be profitable and competitive. Imagine companies reviewing customers on a website like Yelp. Yeah, we talk about that too. This episode is designed to challenge you to reintroduce yourself to your current and future customers. It may irk some people while empower others. Be sure to share it with everyone you know. Today's episode is reflecting on a November 2021 blog post by Foreman & Associates, LLC that questioned if some companies are pushing heavily for Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) positions and initiatives out of a realigned mission towards justice in all areas and walk of life or because they're just on a "let's be on the right side of history" bandwagon. The episode explores this post and:- today's Foreman & Associates blog post on leadership truths, - what business leaders and managers should consider, - the call to action for all leaders to reflect and assess, and - an analysis of what is required to make organizations more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and driven by justice. We're calling out bandwagoners as well as reminding marginalized groups that they too must be vigilant to ensure that their organizations are DEIJ-focused and not feel immune or exempt because they come from a group that has historically been oppressed. This is a human issue not a racial, educational, economic, social, or religious one. There are also some pretty cool quotes from the Education Pioneers, Albert Einstein, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Angela Davis, D.H. Lawrence, and James Baldwin. And you wouldn't guess it but we found a way to blend in a Looney Tunes cartoon episode. Yep, you read that right. You have to listen in to see what we're talking about.
