We had so much fun revisiting season 2 of SATC; a season that had no right to be so good in its sophomore year! Only a couple super problematic storylines in this one (yet unfortunately still relevant) but for the most part we enjoyed remembering Carrie smoking at the Yanked Game looking cool af, the summer in the Hamptons, and Miranda wearing THAT OUTFIT (straight to jail!). Did we get it right? What are YOUR favorite episodes of season 2? As we wait for AJLT S3 with baited breath, we decide to use this interim week to do a deep dive on the more mundane and (in many cases) more toxic pieces of the SATC universe: THE MEN. Now, slight disclaimer here: we used a pre-existing list so some very glaring omissions were accidentally made here (ahem...Richard?) but we can't be spending any more time thinking about straight men than we already do, okay? What do you guys think? Are our picks fair? Controversial? Dumb? Let us know! But keep it cute! Remember...we are sensitive! (But not as sensitive as some of the men on this list). Staci's guest is Roni Lee, a powerhouse singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career stretches back to the 1970s L.A. rock scene. She was a member of the legendary punk band Venus and the Razorblades, wrote songs for The Runaways, and has shared the stage with some of rock's biggest names. But she's not just about legacy—she's still out there tearing it up, and she's got a brand-new EP, Feels Good 2 Be Bad, which she discusses today.

Rebecca Seal started her career moving up the ranks in print journalism, in a clear break away from the heavy work she had seen her parents do, before accidentally having a TV career, alongside being a cook book writer and journalist. But, when facing burnout from working alone and seeking a resource to help her through it - and finding there wasn't one - she wrote one herself, and so began a new phase of her career exploring more about mental health and wellbeing that would see her write a bestseller -Solo: How To Work Alone (And Not Lose Your Mind) - followed by her latest book Be Bad, Better: How Not Trying So Hard Will Set You Free. This conversation covers that whole journey, with ideas and insight from Rebecca for those that are working solo, plus a dive into some of the topics from Be Bad, Better, including patriarchy, late-stage capitalism, the beauty industry and consumerism, how those are impacting are lives, and how understanding them and letting them go can really set us free. It's both hard and hopeful, and it all comes from Rebecca's unique and brilliant brain in a way that manages to be fully relatable. I think there's so much to take from this one. Hosted by Christian Garcia (Host of That Ol' Gay Classic Cinema). Elizabeth Winder, the writer of "Marilyn in Manhattan," joins us again with her extensive Marilyn Monroe knowledge! The Broadway cast is rehearsing the musical number "Let's Be Bad" which explores the pain and anguish Marilyn went through when filming "Some Like It Hot." Elizabeth explains that this is one of many moments where Marilyn was faced with career difficulties. Like Marilyn, Elizabeth suffers from insomnia and this is what caused Marilyn to frequently need breaks and have trouble remembering lines. We all provide our artistic interpretation of the choreography in this number since Ivy is being pulled in different directions like a marionette. Then, Elizabeth explains the nuances between Marilyn and Arthur Miller's toxic relationship compared to that of her and Joe DiMaggio. We all express our frustration with Derek who is manipulating both Ivy and Karen for the sake of putting on an incredible show, or is he? And, why do we bring up Britney Spears? Just to remind you all here's a brief description about the "Let's Be Bad" episode: Karen puts her talents to use at a government party; Michael and Julia's drama increases; Eileen joins forces with Tom's assistant; Ivy thinks something is amiss in her relationship with Derek. Hosted by Christian Garcia (Host of That Ol' Gay Classic Cinema). American author and poet, Elizabeth Winder enters the ITBR to provide insight on the life of Marilyn Monroe and how Marilyn would've felt seeing a Broadway musical about her life. In this episode of ITBR, Christian talks about the humor between the ensemble and how they help one another despite all of the drama surrounding the Marilyn musical. Then, Elizabeth argues that Marilyn "was made for stage acting” and imagines what it would've been like if Marilyn left Hollywood to become a stage actor. Finally, Elizabeth discusses Marilyn's struggles as an actor having to social climb in a male dominated industry. You don't want to miss this group's thoughts on Nick Jonas' guest appearance and the song "I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn't Love to Howl" which explores Marilyn's encounters with the wolves (predatory men) of Hollywood! En 1981 editarían otro álbum: "Come an' Get It" muy al estilo del anterior, que incluiría canciones como Don't break my heart again, Come an'get it. En noviembre de 2006 saldría el disco "Live: In the Shadow of the Blues" con 4 temas inéditos: All I want is you, Dog, If you want me y Ready to Rock. Whitesnake no sólo estaba formada, había evolucionado. Fue elaborada durante el proceso de post-Deep Purple en la carrera en solitario de David Coverdale. Comenzó a trabajar con el clásico guitarrista de Whitesnake Micky Moody en su dos álbumes en solitario. La banda de 1978 que Coverdale había utilizado en su gira (para apoyar su álbum Northwinds) fue la que se convertiría en el primer Whitesnake en breve.Escucha este episodio completo y accede a todo el contenido exclusivo de Biblioteca Del Metal - (Recopilation). Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon and The Jeremy White Podcast presents the legendary DAVID COVERDALE (March 2021 interview). We discuss all things Whitesnake including the great new The Blues album. Plus, David schools Jeremy. PRESS RELEASE -- WHITESNAKE’S THE BLUES ALBUM The 14 Song Collection Completes The Red, White And Blues Trilogy With Remixed And Remastered Versions Of The Band’s Best Blues-Rock Tracks Whitesnake celebrates the blues sound that helped inspire its multi-platinum career on a new collection that features remixed and remastered versions of the group’s best blues-rock songs. THE BLUES ALBUM is the third and final release in the band’s Red, White and Blues Trilogy, a series of compilations organized by musical themes that began this year with Love Songs (red) and The Rock Album (white). Like The Rock Album and Love Songs, all the tracks on THE BLUES ALBUM have been revisited, remixed, and remastered. Whitesnake’s singer-songwriter David Coverdale says, the music reflects how blues artists like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and the three Kings (Albert, B.B. and Freddie) continue to inspire him. In the album’s liner notes, he writes: “It’s hard to find the words to show how profoundly they connected with my soul. But ‘blues’ to me is a beautiful word that describes emotional expression… feelings, be it feelings of sadness, loneliness, emptiness… but, also those that express great joy, celebration and dance, sexiness and Love!!!” The new compilation delivers a potent mix of hits and deep tracks that originally appeared between 1984 and 2011 on six Whitesnake studio albums and Coverdale’s solo album, Into the Light. THE BLUES ALBUM showcases two of the band’s biggest songs: “Slow An’ Easy,” a Top 20 Mainstream Rock hit in 1984 from Whitesnake’s double-platinum album Slide It In, and the smash “Give Me All Your Love” from the band’s 1987 self-titled album, which was certified 8x platinum. Other choice tracks from Whitesnake are also featured: “Looking For Love” and “Crying In The Rain,” and “Steal Your Heart Away,” which is available now. Restless Heart (1997), Good to Be Bad (2008), and Forevermore (2011) are all represented on THE BLUES ALBUM by multiple tracks (“Too Many Tears,” “A Fool In Love” and “Steal Your Heart Away”). The collection also includes “If You Want Me,” a studio recording released in 2006 as a bonus track on the live album, Live…in the Shadows of the Blues. Coverdale also taps his 2000 solo album, Into the Light, for “River Song.” THE BLUES ALBUM CD Track Listing: 1. “Steal Your Heart Away” 2. “Good To Be Bad” 3. “Give Me All Your Love” 4. “Take Me Back Again” 5. “Slow An’ Easy” 6. “Too Many Tears” 7. “Lay Down Your Love” 8. “The River Song” 9. “Whipping Boy Blues” 10. “If You Want Me” 11. “A Fool In Love” 12. “Woman Trouble Blues” 13. “Looking For Love” 14. “Crying In The Rain” Help support the show. But if we don’t understand how to overcome these challenges, we’re never going to grow. Today, we’re talking about how to grow as a person and a leader. Then, I’m going to unpack an article on why you should invest in yourself. And finally, we’ll spend some time journaling about the areas in your life you need to grow. Why It’s Okay to Be Bad at Something In order to grow, we have to get outside of our comfort zones. We have to be willing to invest in ourselves and learn something brand new. One of my favorite ways to grow and become better is by surrounding myself with people who are better at things than I am. I love to seek out people who are really good in certain areas of their lives that I want to be good at and ask them to hang out. Yes, it's humbling—but that's where growth happens. If you want to be better in any area of your life, you've got to be willing to be the small fish in the big pond. You've got to be willing to get outside your box and your comfort zone and invest in yourself to learn something new. The Best Thing to Invest In I want to spend a few minutes unpacking an article I saw recently on Forbes.com called Why You Should Invest in Yourself by Amy Modglin. This article is a great reminder that the things we struggle with are actually really common to most of us. But if we don't understand how to overcome these challenges and barriers, we're never actually going to grow. In the article, Amy shared about a lack of confidence she had and the fear that kept her from investing in herself. She said that all changed when her friend and mentor, John Maxwell, said, “Growth doesn’t just happen.” Amy’s biggest barrier was being afraid she wasn’t worth it. She wasn’t investing in herself. The same thing is true for you and me. You're not going to get to somewhere new by doing the same thing you're doing today. You have to do something different. You have to invest in yourself. Remember: You get to have a say in who you become, but you've got to do something about it. You can't just sit on the sidelines. You have to take the reins. You have to get in the game. You have to read a book, get a coach, go to a conference. You have to do something. You are worth it. Are You Growing? Today, I want you to spend some time reading Ephesians 4:1–16. This passage is saying just grow to grow. Not to be better than others. Not to be impressive. Grow so that you’re not tossed back and forth. Grow so that you have a solid foundation. Grow to become more and more like the God who created you. Grow to become more like Christ. I want to give you a few questions to consider as you journal, as you pray about this, and as you think about what this means for you in your faith walk. How do you grow? How have you matured in the last year? How are you growing in love?

Timothy begins the show talking about what living in Cali was like in the 60's, the inspiration from his Mother and how seeing firsthand what his father (James Drury) did for a living made him realize what he did not want to do in life. His once in a lifetime evening meeting iconic movie stars. We start through Timothy's road to where he is today by beginning as a staff writer with Warner Chappell, who he met and became friends with that has become a household name, and the audition process to land the job on Don Henley's End of Innocence Tour in 1989. We hear about his first night on tour, then being on the road with The Eagles Hell Freezes Over Tour, writing songs for Stevie Nicks and Don Henley and then being on a world tour (Good to Be Bad) with Whitesnake in 2008. Timothy speaks about how he got into photography, his first camera, the magic of the darkroom and his Performance Cube, which you must see! He talks about how the idea came about, what it is and choreographing music and pictures for presentation. We hear about his artwork that is for sale on his website (See Links) and lastly the hardest thing about staying motivated during these times. “The Fallout” premiered on February 5th, 2013, immediately after the premiere episode. (Aww, remember those two-hour premieres that networks used to do back in the day, Mo?) It was written by Julie Rottenberg & Elisa Zuritsky, whose previous work we saw in the season 1 episodes “Let’s Be Bad” and “The Movie Star,” and was directed by Craig Zisk. Now, here’s a weird thing: viewership for this episode was 4.45 million, down from 4.48 in the previous episode WHICH WAS AN HOUR AGO. I guess 30,000 people collectively turned off their TVs after hour 1? We had three featured songs in this episode: one cover of the Eurythmics’ “Would I Lie To You?” And two original songs by two different musical theatre composers: the first by then-up-and-comer duo team Pasek & Paul called “Caught in the Storm” sung by Katherine McPhee, and the second by our home team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman called “They Just Keep Moving the Line” sung by Megan Hilty. Eileen summons her bruised songwriting team to attend the American Theatre Wing gala, but Julia can barely get out the door let alone put on cocktail attire. But Julia heard from Mary Testa who heard from Jackie Hoffman who heard from Cheyenne Jackson who heard from Harvey Fierstein that she and Julia would be presenting at the gala (a lie that Tom made you on the street). In addition to Bombshell being put on ice, Derek gets fired from The Wiz - not only because he shagged a couple of actresses but the five dancers are accusing him of sexual harassment. One of them, Daisy, serves Derek the T in front of Schnippers, saying “You don’t get it. You’re a big shot Director. You’re in a position of power from the mind you wake up in the morning and you don’t treat that power with respect.” Derek second guesses his serial seducing in a dream sequence set to the Eurythmics' “Would I Lie To You?” Ivy is considering leaving the business, as she’s going in for parts that she would have passed on two years ago. But running into a drunken Derek on a stoop, he leaves her with one nugget of wisdom: “You weren’t my Marilyn, but what do I know?” Karen Cartwright hunts down the young and unknown composing team. Half of the team, a twink named Kyle, is eager to collab with Karen. But while his songwriting partner Jimmy is cute enough to go to Greenpoint for, he is anything but agreeable. Even her attempts to wow Jimmy with an impromptu performance of one of his songs drives him away. Jimmy retorts that he doesn’t need help to make it big, but decides the next day that he’ll give it a go with Karen for Kyle’s sake. The American Theatre Wing gala becomes an embarrassment for the Bombshell crew, when Tom gets caught in his lie about presenting and Eileen is asked to leave by the League president. But she decides to leave the industry with a parting shot to remember: an announcement that Bombshell is coming to Broadway this season followed by Ivy Lynn giving a stunning rendition of a never-before-heard tune called “They Just Keep Moving The Line.” Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode we explore the shadow aspects of ourselves. It's healthy to let our inner freak out every once in a while and BE BAD. We look at the duality of good/bad and light/shadow as two equal parts of a bigger whole. We are both those parts and their partnership weaves the fabric of our being.
In these unprecedented times, we're all turning to TV for comfort. And for Broadway nerds like us, that means... SMASH! Tara and Stefania have rewatched Season One and are here to break down the infamous musical drama series. While Smash's ratings during its time on TV led to a premature finale, it continues to thrive in the hearts and timelines of its fans. In our Season One episode, we discuss everything from character development and unnecessary plot lines to iconic moments and Julia's scarves. Almost a decade since its original air date, Smash's musical numbers and scenic design continue to deliver awe-inspiring moments. We're SO ready for this wild ride, hop in! . . . “Let’s Be Bad” premiered on March 5th, 2012. It was written by Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky, and directed by Jamie Babbit. As performers in the Bombshell workshop are warming up for the start of a rehearsal day, Derek uses Karen to work on a new sequence for the bridge sequence. Ivy walks in and clearly startled asks “am I late?” Eileen is anxious about the script developments, interrupting Tom in a date with a handsome lawyer who he’s just not that into. But it’s really Julia who is stalling over dinner at Westway Diner with Michael Swift. Eileen uses sneaky Ellis to spy on Julia’s progress. Derek is pissed about everything going well, even pitting Ivy against Karen by asking Cartwright to perform a tricky vocal passage in front of a full company rehearsal. In their private rehearsal, Karen graciously apologizes for the awkward situation, which Ivy labels “taking singing lessons from a chorus girl.” Ivy has a lot on her plate but she’s handling it, which she shows both the audience in the rehearsal room and watching on TV with a fully-staged fantasy version of “Let’s Be Bad.” After the rehearsal, Sam confines in Ivy that “This company has too many drama queens as it is.” We find out Sam is gay, even though he likes sports (!) Afterwards, drunk Ivy confronts Derek at his apartment about why he can’t support her more. Derek tells her he wishes that people “didn’t have those annoying feelings,” to which Ivy yells back “THEATRE IS ABOUT FEELINGS!” Derek the Nightmare gives her a pseudo-apology, which is more than enough for Ivy to spend the night! Also, Julia’s son gets arrested because she’s out with Michael Swift, who woos her with a front stoop serenade. And Karen learns how to be sexy to help her boyfriend Dev get a leg up in the running for the mayor’s new press secretary. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
“The Cost of Art” premiered on February 27, 2012, and was the first episode in the series NOT written and directed by show creator Theresa Rebeck and Michael Mayer. The episode was written by David Marshall Grant, and directed by Michael Morris. At premiere, the episode was viewed live by 6.6 million, but including DVR recording, was viewed by a total of 9.05 million viewers. There was a lot of music in this episode: Two original songs (History is Made at Night and I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn’t Love to Howl), two snippets of original songs (20th Century Fox Mambo from last ep, and preview of Let’s Be Bad from the next episode), and two covers (Buble’s Haven't Met you Yet and Adele’s Rumor Has It). The workshop of Bombshell has begun! Michael Swift is in, Julia is avoiding Ellis, and all seems right in the world. We also meet two icons of the Smash Universe. Linda, America's Favorite Stage Manager, played by Ann Harada, and Bobby, the snarky chorus boy everyone loves to loves, played by Wes Taylor. Ivy enters the rehearsal room to riot, if somewhat random applause from her castmates and Derek gives us the rundown: the workshop is primarily for the ensemble, only some numbers will be staged, some costumes but “basically it’s up to you to sell it.” However, Eileen Rand doesn’t have the $200,000 she needs to finance this workshop. Turns out her soon-to-be-ex-husband Jerry is keeping her from accessing all but $8,000. So she tries to sell a prized Degas sketch hanging in her office to make it happen, but even that it is Jerry’s name. Karen keeps getting cut from numbers, thanks to sly comments from Ivy. She confides in Jessica, who along with Sue and Bobby, take shipping for LaDuca, new dance clothes and an “intervention.” Which is Chinese food, Marie Kando-ing her closet and performing a dance from routine from their snap and booty shake “dance class.” Everyone ends up at a party for Lyle West at Derek’s house, which of course has a casual grand piano, a drum set and a saxophonist. Eileen has brought the Degas with her which she offers in exchange for points - IF the show is any good. So there’s an impromptu performance of Bombshell which is enough for Lyle to chip in the $200k. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Knowing When Your Season Is Up To celebrate our 100th episode, I want to take you back to just before I launched Redefining Wealth. I was in a great place. My career was going great. For the most part I was fulfilled with what I was doing. I was making good money, doing good work, helping and serving people, and yet, the truth is, my season was up. “What if your season has long expired and you’re extending it out of fear, complacency or delusion?” Now, I’ll be honest, Redefining Wealth was not something I’d planned on doing. The idea of starting a podcast had crossed my mind a couple of times, but it always seemed like too much work. And there was also a fear that people might not get or want it. After all, I had been known as a personal finance expert for years, and while I still incorporate the term wealth, I rarely talk about those hardcore money topics anymore. I lacked confidence. I also thought I lacked the credibility to go deeper into the money topic – to look at how money connects to all the other areas of our lives. But here’s what I learned: It doesn’t matter how credible you are on paper, what matters is how you feel. A Season Doesn’t Have to Be Bad to Mean It’s Time for a Change Sometimes we think that a situation has to be awful in order for us to move on. But here’s the thing, purpose evolves and I don’t believe any of us are meant to do the exact same thing in the exact same way our entire lives. “We’re meant to evolve and if we don’t move when our season is up, then we go bankrupt emotionally, mentally, spiritually, financially.” For me, I was in a space where I was content. I was America’s Money Maven. I had a weekly segment for years on the Steve Harvey Morning Show. I was doing other shows like Dr. Oz and being featured by publications like Cosmopolitan, the New York Post and Essence Magazine. I had a good name as a money expert. Why would I change all of that? How to Know When Your Season Is Up First of all, I experienced what I call the boulder effect. It started out as a pebble, as it always does. For me, well it looked like me getting annoyed going on all of these talk shows and talking about budgets and credit reports when I knew that money and wealth was much more than those things. I kept thinking, “If they ask me one more thing about a budget, I’m going to snap!” Money is not about a template, it’s about your behaviors. It’s about your mindset. It’s so much bigger than a budget, and yet, I’d go, get on the couch, smile and do what I was brought there to do. Then came the rock. My website got hacked. Not hacked in the sense that it redirected to a naughty site or something like that, but hacked in the sense that the hacker went in and deleted files and content, and changed the language. It was bad, and even though the hosting company restored the site, it was a shell of what it had been – so much of my content was gone. Then came the boulder. I received a letter stating that Real Money Answers, my entire brand, was infringing on someone else’s copyright. What?! I didn’t understand and from what I knew, I’d had Real Money Answers trademarked for quite a while. What I learned through this process, however, was that my attorney had dropped the ball, and I didn’t actually have Real Money Answers trademarked. It was like one nightmare after another, and I knew it was time for a change. What Began as a Dream Turned into a Chore Another way I knew my season was up was that opportunities that once felt like a dream had turned into a chore. They didn’t excite me anymore. Perhaps one of my friends describes this best, “You know what it is?” she said. “I’ve tried to romanticize the fact that this thing started as a dream so that I could survive a toxic environment.” Ding, ding, ding. I know exactly what she means. As an entrepreneur, if you have consistent contracts or clients, you can chain yourself to something and start to believe that IT is your source. In all actuality though, you’re trying to force it to remain or to be the source because you want to romanticize the opportunity based on how it started out. “Not everything that starts out one way will end the same way, and not because the environment changes, but because we change.” The truth is we can make anything look, feel or seem like a dream opportunity if we have an agenda. That’s the space I was in before finally accepting the call to let go and start Redefining Wealth. “Purpose evolves and you have the right to say goodbye to one season and hello to another – that is part of the journey.” If I can leave you with anything, it’s to be honest and real with yourself. If you’re in the midst of a boulder effect or if you know that what began as a dream has turned into a chore, I want you to know it’s okay to surrender and accept that the season is up. Lastly, I want to add that one of my clients, Danielle Joseph, has a whole program on seasons and she further explains how you can go from one season to the next in different areas of your life at different times. Power of Permission Episode #11 “Permission to Be Bad at Things” wraps up our Power of Permission Series. Permission is a power principle because too often we remain stuck in place waiting for someone else to give us permission to move ahead. This week, one of the calendar's most somber holidays befalls us again. No, not Ash Wednesday - we're talking about the return of Daylight Savings Time and the loss of that precious, precious hour. If you're like us and you need every second you can get, maybe you'll appreciate the short songs we chose for this week - "Holly Jolly Christmas" as performed by Michael Bublé is consistently Bublé, while "Good to Be Bad" by Pentatonix delivers an unexpected twist that has us contemplating a life of crime. Or at least, movies about a life of crime featuring Pentatonix.

E8 – Email Writing Is Not like DIY! We Simply Can’t Be Bad at It Unfortunately, email writing isn’t like DIY. We have to be good at it. We can’t put it off or avoid it altogether. Also, we can’t just pay someone with better tools and skills to do it for us. Each person receives about 87 of them a day. Emails are, therefore, a huge part of our working lives. We spend hours each day trawling through our inboxes. They are an essential tool. Yet, we were never really trained on how to use them. Listen to our latest podcast to learn some practical email writing tips to help you improve your email effectiveness. Read the Transcript Below: “I’d like to tell you a sticky story about a house alarm and how I think that relates to your emails. My name is Darren Smith and you’re at the home of sticky learning. There weren’t any particular burglaries in the area, but we wanted to be safe so we didn’t get a guy in or we didn’t get one professionally fitted. I thought I’m in my early thirties I can do this. I should be able to do it yet, I know that my DIY skills are poor.” The Alarm.. “Anyway, we move on. We bought a Yale alarm. Imagine a great big box turning up a few days later. Rip the lid off. It’s about the size of the kitchen table and it’s full of this house alarm from PIR detectors to the great big yellow box that goes on the front of the house that says Yale, hopefully, to deter any would-be burglars.” “So I get up one Saturday morning and I know in the back of my mind that DIY is not my thing, but I’m quite determined and I’m motivated to sort this because I think I can. So I spend too long figuring out how to put this alarm together and getting it to work with the house. And you can imagine there’s me with a step ladder, a ladder, a drill, screws. It’s awful. The drill is probably 10, 15 years old. I still got it now.” “The drill bits are broken, the screwdrivers are blunt. They are not the tools of a professional work person. But I’ve got one foot on the top of the ladder and I’m sort of dangling, hanging onto the window seal with my left hand and in my right hand I’ve got the drill held up as far as I can above my head about another three feet and I’m trying to drill the holes to put this alarm on.” “I’ve done some of the other bits I’ve done the wiring and wireless wasn’t a thing back then and it’s taken me ages. I am hating the job. So I started at about nine o’clock and it’s probably now 7:00 PM”. Terrible at DIY “My wife is ‘Why is this taking so long?’ Well at the heart of it, what I didn’t want to tell her is, I’m rubbish with this, but I persist being quite motivated and driven. We finish, it’s dark. I’ve had enough. The stress was immense. I put the tools away. I’ve got a few spare bits from the Yale box left, which I’m sure ought to go somewhere, but the thing works, that night I have a few beers. I sort of half celebrate, but I know it’s not a great job done.” “I should’ve got someone in but we couldn’t afford it and we go to bed. We’ve got one young child at the time. Then about how past one in the morning, this noise goes off and it is excruciating. I leap out of bed. My young daughter wakes up. She’s screaming, running around the house trying to figure out what it is, but of course, it’s the alarm.” “I put some jeans on, I run downstairs. How do I get this thing off? The keypad doesn’t work. Nothing seems to work to fix this thing. I go outside, “Oh, it must be the yellow box on the wall.” I get the step ladder and the ladder. Then, I put it up against the wall and I reach for the yellow box, but of course, I can’t reach it. So, I run in, the alarm is still excruciating. The neighbours are now awake. I come in, grab the broom, go to the top of the ladder and whack the Yale box straight off the wall. All that hard work, the noise continues. I walk back inside the house and say, shout to go. What is going on? The noise is still continuing, but I’ve taken the thing off the wall and then we realize it’s the smoke alarm.” We Don’t Have the Choice to Be Bad At Writing Emails “All that work for nothing. Now, I don’t need to be any good at DIY. We can now afford to get someone in to do a few of these things, but, a bad workman blames his tools. I didn’t have the normal tools. I didn’t have the training. Nor the inclination. With email writing, we don’t have a choice. They’re a part of our working life. As any knowledge worker will tell you, they’re either working half their time in their inbox or they’re never out of it. How does this relate to emails? We never were really trained to use emails. Now the tool itself is probably quite good. It hasn’t changed that much in 20 years since it was introduced, but it’s not bad. I think it’s the operator. It’s us, but who can blame us when we were never really trained to use it.” “Well, I want to share with you just three points that might make us use emails slightly better, make us more effective. If this is a tool that we need to use half or more of our time, then we’ve got to get better at it because it isn’t going to change as a tool. We’ve got to learn to use it better. Unlike DIY, I’ve got a choice. With emails, we haven’t.” “So, here are my three practical tips of just many that you could use to improve how you operate your email. Number one, and this will sound like a theory out of a business book. What’s your objective? We’re going to move on from that really quickly from what’s your objective to what the hell are you trying to get from the email that you write. Now, I know from the research I’ve read as a time management trainer that people want to vigorously cross stuff off their list and they do that because there’s an endorphin rush.” What Do You Want to Get When Writing an Email? “The challenges, they quickly bang off a quick email scribbling off their list, forgetting that it’ll grow arms and legs, particularly the four or five people that are copied in who really shouldn’t reply, but they’re going to anyway because Hey, they’re stuck in their inbox as well.” “So my first question is what do you want to get from the email? You either want someone to do something, I action this all you want to get some information there. Broadly, the two things you want to give, get from an email. The third one is, I just alluded two is to give some information, but email isn’t always the best format. So you either want to get someone to do something, you either want some information back or you want to communicate something and you wouldn’t be surprised the number of people who don’t know which one they want to do because they’ve just fired off a quick email. Move on to the next task. So what do you want to get from the next email that you write?” “Aristotle had a great way of putting together speeches. He said, “I’m going to tell you what I’m going to tell you,” then he tells them. And then, at the end of the summary, he tells them what he has already told them. Now that’s speeches and that’s Aristotle with emails. There’s a very good way of figuring out how you know what you want from them by writing it three times. Once in the subject heading, once at the start of the body of the email and once at the end, and I don’t mean repeating it exactly, but I do mean being really clear. I want five slides by Friday. The answer’s this objective. That will be the type of thing that you want to say. The second practical tip is using the subject heading.” Use the Subject Heading like the Headline of a Newspaper “Remember each person gets about 87 emails a day and whilst you spend hours possibly crafting a long email, they spent seconds reading it and possibly dismissing it and remember that a lot of emails are opened on mobile devices of course now. So the subject heading is really important rather than meeting.” “What I’d like you to do is use the subject heading like the headline of a newspaper with credibility. I don’t mean Freddie Starr ate my hamster, which was an amusing The Sun headline some years back. But I do mean meeting Friday leisure expert and inputs, please reply by Thursday. So use the subject heading to really grab the reader’s attention to get them to read your email and do something about it. Either reply with the information that you want or to go and do some action for you. And my third and final practical tip is the layout.” “No one likes to read a wall of text. It’s hard. You’ve open books in the past and they’re just a wall of texts. They’re not broken up with any white space. They’re not broken up with images. And they’re not broken up with anything bold or paragraphs. That’s what it’s like reading some people’s emails. Don’t give them the excuse not to read it. Make it easy for them. Paragraphs can act like a fog light in deep fog using bold, underlined a few words or a sentence can act as a signpost. White space between paragraphs can just give the reader a breather, particularly if it’s a complex or technical email. Try and help them to help you, get away from needing the endorphin, endorphin rush that comes with just rigorously crossing off your to-do list.” Final Thoughts “So in summary, DIY is not my thing. I’ll never be very good at it. My shed of tools is not something to be proud of, but thankfully I have no ego around tools and DIY, I do around cars. DIY, I can find a different solution. I can get someone in to do it, or I can do some of the small jobs or actually my son is starting to get very good at these things.” “With email writing, we don’t have a choice. There are going to be 50% or more and increasing of a knowledge worker’s work. You’ve got the tool, you need to be able to use it better. So my final question is, when did you last improve the way you use the biggest tool that you use? I’ve given you three tips. There are many, many more, and we run a webinar of 21 mistakes most people make in emails.” “Thank you for listening.” For further tips and information, you can take a look at our Ultimate Guide to Time Management Skills and our Time Management Skills YouTube Channel. Although Bob Wall had no desire to become a film star, he somehow ended up appearing in some of the highest grossing martial arts films of all time. As Chuck Norris’ business partner and Bruce Lee’s training buddy and friend for over a decade, Bob – a world professional karate champion – found himself cast as one of the baddies in Lee's 1972 film, The Way of the Dragon. Bob provided a similar foil to Lee’s on-screen attacks the following year when he was cast as the treacherous villain, O’harra, in the 1973 martial arts classic, Enter the Dragon. In this candid interview, Bob Wall – now aged 78 and speaking to me from his home in California – recalls a young and charismatic Bruce Lee who ruffled feathers amongst the martial arts community and revolutionised the action film genre. Despite a few film appearances since Enter the Dragon (including Robert Clouse’s Game of Death and supporting roles in Chuck Norris films), Bob – who describes himself as a “foul-mouthed Irishman” – mostly retired from the movie business following Lee’s untimely death. But the Bob Wall story doesn’t end there. Listen as he recalls training with Gene LeBell, Mike Stone and Joe Lewis, and teaching superstars like Steve McQueen, Freddie Prinze and Elvis Presley. He is still active on the martial arts scene as the founder of World Black Belt, and through his many appearances at seminars around the world. For the latest Bob Wall information, head to bobwallworldblackbelt.com. Also on the show, I talk to the action film expert and writer Timon Singh, who drops by to talk about his new book, 'Born to Be Bad – Talking to the Greatest Villains in Action Cinema', which features interviews with some of the best big screen baddies, including Bob Wall. 'Born to Be Bad' is available now in hardback, paperback and on Kindle via Amazon.
In this episode, Marybeth Hamilton speaks to Alice Echols, author of the ground-breaking book Daring to Be Bad, about the rise and fall of radical feminism in the pivotal year of 1968. How did demands for the liberation of women emerge from the tumult of radical protest? What tensions and conflicts did the early movement contain? How do its demands and its methods resonate fifty years later? Echols reflects: "What people don't understand about the late 1960s, and what they don't understand about the women's movement, is that there is a very different logic at work, and it is not a logic of intersectionality. It is a logical of organizing around your own oppression. Anything else is seen as liberal. And liberal is understood as compromised, tainted, and to be avoided." They Used to Be Bad to the Bone Basically, Paul doesn't want Christians to worry about all the petty things going down on Earth. Just stay focused on Jesus and all will be well. That means no sex outside of marriage. Don't do impure or lustful stuff or desire evil things. And definitely don't be greedy. It's a tall order. Back when the Colossians were Gentiles, they did all this bad stuff. But now that they're believers, things are different. They shouldn't be angry or cruel or mean or gossipy. They also shouldn't lie. Well, unless a fellow Christian asks if her toga makes her look fat. Christians basically have a whole new wardrobe. They need to put on their holiest ensemble and not those sinful rags from last season. The awesome part is that this means that everyone is equal in God's eyes. He doesn't see a difference between Greeks or Jews or foreigners or slaves or free people. Jesus is cool with everyone. Group hug! Really, just do good stuff. Be compassionate, kind, humble, meek, and patient. Forgive other people. . Don't forget to love. Bottom line, according to Paul: let Jesus be a part of your life, and you'll be happy and awesome and thankful for everything in your life. How about some thoughts for the ladies? Wives, obey your husbands, just like you would obey God himself. But gents, love your wives and don't be huge jerks to them. Kids, listen to your parents. Yeah, they can be lame, but it's the right thing to do. Dads, don't be cruel to your children. You might actually push them to rebel and that would not be good. Just pretend that you're slaving away for God. You'll get your reward in Heaven! We guess that's one thing to look forward to. Don't forget, though—anyone who does the wrong thing will be punished. Fingers crossed that God actually has the whole "owning humans" thing under this "wrong stuff" category.
