It was sad to see one of the Buddies favorite trilogies come to an end, but luckily in five years they'll completely forget the series and be able to do it all over again! The Buddies got to chatting about: yearbooks, the prisoner's dilemma, and the drawbacks of filming everything (especially violent massacres). So equip your SlingBlade and wolf cloaks for one last ride (in this trilogy at least) as we finish book 3 in the Red Rising Series.Intro (0:00-1:21)Stock Up/Down (1:22-28:29)Favorite Scene/Character (28:30-38:30)Love/Hate (38:31-46:20)Recapping Series & Conclusion (46:21-50:08) NEXT EPISODE: Shōgun (2024 TV series)NEXT BOOK: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J. “A river of material flows through us. When we share our works and our ideas, they are replenished. If we block the flow by holding them all inside, the river cannot run and new ideas are slow to appear. In the abundant mindset, the river never runs dry. Ideas are always coming through. And an artist is free to release them with the faith that more will arrive. If we live in a mindset of scarcity, we hoard great ideas.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! In true Made You Think fashion, our 100th episode is full of tangents. This week, we read The Creative Act by Rick Rubin which emphasizes the importance of being genuine and vulnerable in the creative process, showing that your own struggles and authenticity can result in meaningful and powerful creative work. We cover a wide range of topics including: Giving life to the ideas in your imagination Publishing cadences of different successful book series Rick Rubin's backstory in the music industry How media's incentives have shifted from accuracy to clicks Tactics to unblock your creativity And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. Whether you were around for our first episode in 2017 or joined us sometime afterwards, we appreciate you listening to our show. (1:01) Nat talks about how he manages his current content schedule from articles and newsletters to podcasts and short form videos. (4:48) Today, we're discussing The Creative Act. Think of it as a 'mindset' book rather than a tactical book, and how you can go into reading this book to get the most value out of it. (9:15) This is a great book to read early in your career as it addresses common mental roadblocks you may face within the creative process. Oftentimes, what you output may not be the same as what you initially planned in your mind, but that doesn't make it any less valuable. (14:10) Getting out of your own way is a large part of creativity. The importance of mixing it up and giving attention to even the most simplistic ideas you may have. (19:35) We share a little bit about Rick Rubin's backstory and how he came to work with so many famous musicians. As the founder of Def Jam, he has worked with several talented musical acts including Johnny Cash, the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, and more. (23:43) Why you should keep the scope of your work smaller, and how that helps you to recognize your work as a moment in time rather than something that has to define you forever. (29:06) How book and TV series often rely on the momentum from their viewers and readers for the continued success of their future releases, though that momentum can be difficult to drum up. (32:51) Some authors take long breaks between each of their books while others churn them out right after another. It goes to show that the creative process looks different for everybody. (36:17) A lot of the news outlets serve the purpose of entertaining rather than informing. When compared to WWE, it's something that we know is a sham or is fabricated, but it's still amusing to watch. (42:52) Dangerous positive feedback loops between the media, people seeking their names in the news, and those consuming it. Media's incentives aren't necessarily to get things right but to get more clicks and views. (49:29) Despite some leadership issues within the past decade in America, we've stayed afloat. How long can we stay this way? (56:02) The power of the US dollar and inflation rates in the US vs. other countries. (59:54) That wraps up this episode. The Consumer VC: Venture Capital I B2C Startups I Commerce | Early-Stage Investing
Our guest today is Nick Mindel ( https://www.linkedin.com/in/nmindel/ ) , Partner at Amberstone ( https://amberstonelp.com/ ). Amberstone invests at the early stages in entrepreneurs building breakthrough consumer companies. Some of their investments include Daily Harvest, Juneshine, Bev and Honey Mama's. Previously, Nick worked at Piper Sandler and a co-founder of Trail Post Ventures. Thank you Justin Gordon for the introduction! A book that he recommends that inspired him personally is A River Runs Through It ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/022647206X?camp=1789&creativeASIN=022647206X&ie=UTF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Norman Maclean. A book that inspired him professionally is Principles ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1501124021?camp=1789&creativeASIN=1501124021&ie=UTF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Ray Dalio. A series that he's thoroughly enjoyed is The Red Rising Series ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/9123881453?camp=1789&creativeASIN=9123881453&ie=UTF8&linkCode=xm2&tag=theconsumervc-20 ) by Pierce Brown. You can also follow your host, Mike, on Twitter @mikegelb ( https://twitter.com/MikeGelb ). You can also follow for episode announcements @consumervc ( https://twitter.com/ConsumerVc ). Some of the questions that I asked Nick - * Tell me your origin story, I know your family was involved in the food and beverage industry, but what initially attracted you to finance and consumer? * How did Trail Post Ventures come together? * I can imagine building out a track record is hard, and even with a track record that doesn't mean you can fundraise. For folks that are looking to raise their own funds, what would you advise? * Talk to me about the transition to Amberstone come together? * What's Amberstone's thesis? * What are some qualities in founders that you like to see? * When you are evaluating opportunities, how do you think about optimizing profitability vs. growth and gross margin? * How do you think about the differences between a trend and a fad? * How do you think about habits? Since we're living in COVID, it seems like people have become more comfortable buying physical goods online as it's become the only way to. How are you thinking about ecommerce when things go (roughly) back to normal - stores reopen? * What are consumer trends that you are most excited about? * Is it harder to find conviction among founders since you are meeting with them remotely? * I've had on Will McClelland, whose the MP at Elizabeth Street Ventures and he believes that if you want to build a consumer company or focus on consumer, New York is the place to do that, not San Francisco. What are your thoughts around some of the differences between NY and SF? * Do you take a look at founders that are located in secondary and tertiary markets? If so, what's some advice for them that are building venture backable businesses but aren't in a big venture ecosystem? * What's one thing that you would change when it came to venture capital? * What's your most recent investment and what makes you excited about it? * What's one piece of advice for founders building consumer businesses?
