RESILIENCE AND EFFECTIVENESS: EXAMINING ENDURANCE IN SENIOR MILITARY LEADERS

Despite the fact that so many of them make it look easy, the daily lives of senior U.S. military leaders can be incredibly demanding. Laura Weimer examined how senior leaders manage their well-being (or, at times, struggle to do so) amidst these demanding careers, and she's in the studio with host JP Clark to share her discoveries. Drawing from her research, Weimer highlighted the unique pressures of senior roles, including frequent relocations, intense scrutiny, and the weight of consequential decisions. She also discussed the inevitable challenges of mid-life, such as caring for aging parents and navigating evolving family dynamics, which compound work-related stress. Weimer's key takeaway? Developing a strong sense of identity, meaning, and purpose is essential for fostering resilience and sustaining leadership effectiveness. I don't know if necessarily it's the Army's job to help us figure out our identity. I do think it would be valuable for the Army to acknowledge the value of those conversations and maybe even prompt those conversations. Given all of the possibilities we have living in a modern society, people still struggle with feeling lost, unhappy, and unfulfilled. It's even been reported that American unhappiness hit a record low early this year. If you do a climate check with the people in your life and your social media pages, it's not hard to see that sadly behind some of the smiles, there's a feeling of unhappiness in the air. Arthur C. Brooks is the William Henry Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School. On this week's Keepin' It Real, Cam explains the Ft Lauderdale accord and how it's telling him that it's time to move on. ----- My wife and I will be empty nesters in eighteen months. If all goes according to plan, in that time our youngest two will graduate and head to college and if looking back is anything like looking ahead, these next eighteen months will fly by. If you're a regular listener, you know that my wife and I have four kids. We purchased this house with a family of six in mind. With only two kids left at home, it's already a lot of space and in eighteen months it will be much larger than we need. So today, just now, in fact, a realtor left. We wanted her to tell us what buying and selling a home looks like today since we've not done it in nearly twenty years. What part of our house will new buyers like and how can we accent it. What parts will buyers not like and how can we shore them up. We got from her a list of ten documents we need to find that will help in the sale of the house. And we have eighteen months or so to get all this done. This all stems from my wife and I drawing up a Reverse Bucket List in a Ft Lauderdale hotel room in December. It's an idea I got from Arthur Brooks' book called From Strength to Strength. A bucket list is what you want to do and what you want to get that will excite you; that'll make you happy. A Reverse Bucket List is what you want to get rid of or what you will never do again that will make you happy. At the top of my Reverse Bucket List was yardwork. It also included paying for homeowner's insurance on rooms and bathrooms and spaces now infrequently used with two children gone. My Reverse Bucket List included clutter and stuff. My wife and I agreed to the gist of the list and we agreed we'd begin slowly working through the list. We've termed the list and our agreement to work through it the Ft Lauderdale Accord. Since then, we've reference how any decisions we need to make jibe with the Ft Lauderdale Accord. The result has been a slow-moving process of beginning to downsize, to throw stuff away, and the most recent aspect of the Ft Lauderdale Accord was today's meeting with the realtor.   In a very short amount of time, the house downsizing idea has taken hold for me. I walk through the house looking at cabinets and closets and drawers wondering what's in ‘em and how much of it can we get rid of. Should I put a coat of paint on anything? Should suck it up and get the yard show-ready and drop sod on the places I know it will eventually die because its died four or five times already? My mind is fixed on what's next. I'm already gone. And I'm now wondering if staying here another eighteen months is too long. Regardless, my inner knower is erasing all doubt that it's definitely time to move on. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.

Bob is a pioneer in the psychology and social science of retirement. He is a five-time best-selling author, nationally syndicated columnist and recognized presenter at retirement conferences across the US. He is the founder of the Retirement Coaches Association, Certified Professional Retirement Coach Designation and Retirement Intelligence Assessment. His work has reached millions of retirement readers through seven books, twelve guides, and over 800 articles. In addition to his own writings, he frequently appears in major business media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNBC, MarketWatch, the New York Times, and more. As a former social worker turned retirement expert and author, he has found that retirement is among the most fascinating, yet least understood, phases of life. As a result, he has developed a powerful message to tackle the mental, social, physical, spiritual, and financial aspects of retirement. In this episode Bob and discuss the common misconceptions about retirement, the rise of grey divorce, and the importance of pre-retirement planning. We also tackle some tricky subjects and highlight the dark side of retirement, including loneliness and addiction, and the necessity of establishing new routines to maintain mental health and social connections post-retirement. Bob discusses the evolving concept of retirement, emphasising the importance of identity, purpose, and personal fulfilment over financial wealth and he introduces the Retirement Quotient framework, which assesses readiness for retirement through various personal dimensions, including emotional and spiritual well-being. Key Takeaways Retirement planning should focus on the individual, not just finances. Many retirees experience a drop in social interactions. Pre-retirement planning is crucial for a successful transition. The 'honeymoon phase' of retirement can lead to disillusionment. Loneliness and addiction are significant issues in retirement. Couples often struggle with identity and purpose post-retirement. Establishing new routines is essential for mental health. Workaholism can hinder the retirement experience. Communication between partners is vital for a successful retirement. Retirement should be planned as a new chapter, not an end.  The new wealth is found in work-life balance and connections. Retirement amplifies who you already are, not who you want to be. Maslow's hierarchy applies to retirement, focusing on self-actualization. Retirement requires a proactive framework for success. The Retirement Quotient assesses personal readiness for retirement. Understanding personal traits is crucial for retirement planning. Retirement is an empty bucket that needs to be filled meaningfully. Mindset and habits are essential for a fulfilling retirement. Stop waiting for retirement to start living your values. The only guarantee in retirement is the inevitability of death. Or what I like to name as career and calling.   The first half consists of your career. In the book, Brooks explains that this is when you use your fluid intelligence, your knowledge and hard work to innovate and solve problems. The second half, if the transition is made right, consists of your calling. In this half, Brooks says we shift into crystalized intelligence, meaning we pull from our wisdom library not to answer “what?” but rather “why?” In this half, we search for more purpose and fulfillment.  But how can you tell which stage you're in, and how can you successfully transition so that you can leave your career with success and meaning?   You can find the answers in this Your Brilliant Difference Podcast episode!   What to Expect  00:00 — Feeling Stuck in Your Career  02:46 — Navigating the Two Stages of Your Career  11:24 — The Role of Fluid Intelligence and Crystallized Intelligence  13:05 — Transforming Your Work into a Calling  14:28 — Examples of Career to Calling Transitions  23:22 — Finding Meaning and Fulfillment in Your Work  Get a New Episode Delivered Right to Your Inbox Every Thursday  I've made staying in the loop of content that will help you accelerate in your career easy. Send us a Text Message. When Michaelangelo was asked how he created his Statue of David, he answered, “I just saw an angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”And in From Strength to Strength, Arthur C. Brooks says you are thinking about it wrong if you view your life as an empty canvas on which you need to create. Instead, he says you are already a complete work of art. Your life's masterpiece emerges as you chip away everything that is not the essence of you. You may have a bucket list. And I'm a collector of experiences, too. I view life as a treasure hunt for new places, special people, and neat experiences. I believe in pursuing our dreams now. So I'm not ready to completely toss out my bucket list. But Brooks makes the point that if we think we have to add things to a bucket that starts out empty in order to have a fulfilling life, we can become frenzied. In that state we risk missing the joy of the journey we're on. Beyond that, we miss seeing that there's an angel inside already. YOU have been there all along. Today I'm reflecting on how I might differentiate between what part of my life is sculpture and which part is stone that I can chip away. How do you filter opportunities? How do you know when you've hit bedrock on who you are at your core? How do you slow down to enjoy the journey? Whatever your methods, here's to hoping you can always see a clear vision of the masterpiece that you are!Get uplifting reminders wherever you hang out:Connect with the host, Lisa Liguori:Website:https://lisaliguori.comEmail me: Lisa@AdviceColumn.comConnect with us at Advice Column:tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@advicecolumnp...Website:https://advicecolumn.com/Instagram:@advicecolumnpodFacebook:  / theadvicecolumnpodcast  YouTube:   / @advicecolumn1

A Note from James:I particularly want to reverse my aging. I'm not concerned about being able to run a mile or anything like that; I just want to reverse the aging of my brain. I feel there's a definite difference between my brain now and when I was younger. By the way, culturally, we acknowledge that the brain ages. Not only medically, but culturally, you have to adapt to being the wise older person rather than the sharp young person. We had a great conversation with Arthur Brooks about this. He wrote an excellent book, which I can't recommend enough, called "From Strength to Strength." That podcast with Arthur Brooks changed my life in how I view my brain aging. Additionally, several podcasts with David Sinclair about the aging process have also been life-changing.I have used the supplements he recommended and made the lifestyle changes he suggested back in 2019. David has conducted a lot of research in the five years since his book "Lifespan" was released, and I wanted to see what the current state of his research was. So, he came on the podcast.I'm very grateful; he doesn't do many podcasts. He shared some incredible discoveries and new information, giving me real insight. We discussed everything related to what he's doing in anti-aging and what he's discovered since the last time I had him on. At the special request of our listeners, I also asked him about testosterone.Towards the end of the podcast, I asked him about that, and his answer was very interesting. Key discussions include the information theory of aging, the role of DNA and epigenetics in aging, and the concept of age reversal through maintaining or restoring the epigenome's integrity. The episode covers the potential of using Yamanaka factors for age reversal, the challenges in translating these findings from mice to humans, and regulatory considerations for human trials. Father Len helps us recognize and grapple with decisions we make that control the trajectory of our lives and determine our happiness. Support Wrestling with God Productions: https://www.GiveSendGo.com/WWGProductions Highlights, Ideas, and Wisdom The Most Important Decision in Life – College commencement speech by Bishop Robert Baron that inspired this episode The most important question in this life is what kind of soul you will have. “To love is to be vulnerable.” – CS Lewis “What you do with your soul really is a map to your future.” – Father Len Your soul is not your mental ability or your psychological profile. It's a thing that contains all the virtues of God and the spirit of God. The Old Testament describes heaven as a place of true relationship where people relate to each other soul to soul. From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life by Arthur Brooks Happiness comes down to care of your soul, not success in the world. “Everybody worships something. Everybody adores something. Everybody has something that gives their life meaning and worth. Everyone lets something capture their imagination. That thing will control the direction of your life. If you worship money and things, then you'll never feel like you have enough. If you worship your body and beauty and sexual allure, in time, you'll be resentful because you'll never be beautiful enough. You'll feel ugly. And, as time and age starts to show, you will die a million deaths. If you worship power, you'll end up feeling threatened and afraid. Read any biography of a dictator. You will need evermore power to numb you against the fear of being afraid. If you worship intellect, being seen as smart, you'll end up feeling stupid and a fraud and on the verge of being found out. The most insidious thing is, that for most people, it will remain unconscious, but it's their true religion.” – David Foster Wallace Whatever you worship shapes your soul and controls your life. We continue our series on Happierness with happiness researcher and evangelist Arthur Brooks. This is part two where we go behind the scenes to find out What Drives Arthur in his personal life as he strives to practice what he preaches. I appreciate that Arthur is up front with the fact that he's not naturally prone to be in a so-called, happy state. He must proactively work at it. Me too. Arthur again is a Harvard Professor, a columnist at The Atlantic, a very in demand speaker, and author of 12 books. I had him on the show in 2023 for his book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. The message in that book continues to influence me. This time he's back with his new book co authored with Oprah Winfrey, titled, Build The Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier. Arthur is a very intentional person and deeply considers all areas of his life. When I asked him about his values regarding his career he spoke to his efforts to stay aware of the why of what he does as opposed to just the what. In his pursuit of health I found it interesting that he cited he's not necessarily happy to be exercising, but it helps him be less unhappy overall. This episode is quite an interesting journey through the lifestyle of one of our cultures leading experts on happiness. He gives us some practical advice for how to disassociate yourself from outrage culture. Everyone wants more happiness in their life, but most pursue it incorrectly, mistakenly believing it can be found in places like the promotion or the bank account. Instead, happiness is the by-product of pursuits less appreciated. Like the quality of your relationships with friends and family. Doing hard things. Creating value for others. And being in communion with the transcendent. Here to help us better orient our lives towards happiness is Arthur C. Brooks, returning for round two on the podcast. Arthur is a social scientist, in-demand public speaker, and professor at both the Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School where he teaches courses on leadership, happiness, and social entrepreneurship. In addition, he is the creator of the popular How to Build a Life column for The Atlantic, and the author of 13 books, including the #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength. His latest offering—a book he co-authored with Oprah Winfrey—is entitled, Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier which is filled with practical, social science, and neuroscience-backed practices to strengthen what he dubs the four pillars of happiness: family, friendship, work, and faith.  In this conversation, we discuss what happiness is and isn't, how to experience more of it, and the concrete steps and practical solutions you can adopt to build a better blueprint for a more fulfilling future. Arthur is a treasure. I could have talked to him all day. This one is wisdom-packed and overflowing with life-changing and actionable advice.
