In his sermon, Pastor Nate explores the concept of being "poor in spirit," drawing from Jesus' teachings and illustrating the profound need for spiritual poverty to experience true richness in Christ. This year, more voters than ever before will take part in national elections. At the same time, democratic norms and policies are under threat globally. Why is this happening, and what should be done about it? In a new episode of Talking Policy, host Lindsay Shingler talks with Dr. Pranab Bardhan, a distinguished professor emeritus of economics at UC Berkeley, about his book, A World of Insecurity: Democratic Disenchantment in Rich and Poor Countries. Bardhan shows that both cultural and economic insecurity are contributing to the trend of democratic backsliding, and offers perspectives on policies that would make citizens of democracies more secure while protecting the processes and norms of democratic governance. This interview was conducted on April 16, 2024. The transcript has been edited for length and clarity.

If you are rich, what are your obligations to the poor? If you are poor, how should you view those richer than you? The Lord in the Gospels teaches us about wealth and poverty and the Teachings for the New Church build on those concepts to help us understand how Christians ought to view these things.
If your teeth aren't as pearly white as you'd like them to be - no worries! Back in Tudor England, you'd pass for a super-rich and noble person. Back then, sugar was available to the wealthiest ones only, as it was imported from faraway countries. The more sugar people consumed, the blacker their teeth were, and it was a fancy attribute of a rich lifestyle, just like designer bags today. Did the people back then have any other unusual traditions? Let's see! The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
Between 2010 and 2015, David served in the UK's Coalition Government as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Schools Minister, and Cabinet Office Minister. Whilst Schools Minister he was responsible for policy areas including all capital and revenue funding, the Pupil Premium, accountability and policy on teachers and leadership. Since 2015, David has been Chairman of the Education Policy Institute. In this episode we focus on narrowing the education gap between rich and poor and delve into various areas, including creating and communicating a strong evidence base, engaging with policymakers and the media, the possible introduction of Value Added Tax to independent schools, and quite a bit more. As someone who served as Schools Minister, David has key insight on how to engage with policymakers effectively and ensuring research reaches decision-makers at the right time. Translating and summarising complex research, and boiling it down to the policy impact, is actually not the challenging part. The bigger challenge is in ensuring policymakers take note of the research even when it doesn't align with their own views and, also, in ensuring research cuts right through policymakers' busy diaries and grabs their attention. Narrowing the education gap between rich and poor is one of David's key focus areas. He explains how in the UK we have some of the best universities in the world, but there is a tail of underachievement which is very long and highly associated with income and social class, which is the weakness of the UK education system. If we can close the gap between rich and poor we'd have an education system that would genuinely be one of the very best in the world. "Rich and Poor" from Pastor Abe Miller. James 1:1-11
In today's episode, Gene takes us to the book of James. James 2:8 says, “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘love your neighbor as yourself' you are doing right.” That's God's dream for His church, where you love your neighbor--whether they're rich or poor, black or white, Asian or Hispanic, Republican or Democrat, blue collar or white collar, young or old. You love them all as you love yourself.

A recent book, The Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market, breaks down the flow of wealth between the rich and the poor. The numbers are staggering. 47 trillion dollars has lined the pockets of the rich, sourced from the poor. In this episode of Global Truths, Dr Keith Suter explains why relying on a 'free market' has led to a widening divide between the haves, and have-nots. It turns out teh TV show Utopia is a lot closer to the mark than we think.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is the gap between rich and poor in the UK fair? The soaring cost of living is raising questions about the gap between rich and poor. As prices have been forced up by global events, including the war in Ukraine, families on low incomes, who spend most of their money on basics, have been hit hard. In the last year, more than two million people in the UK turned to food banks. Stories of parents forced to choose between food and warmth, or skipping meals so their children can eat, have become common. Can the UK, one of the richest countries in the world, morally justify millions of its people relying on charity just to keep their children warm and fed? The wealthiest ten per cent of households own 43% of the country's wealth, so is it naïve to suggest that the poorest should get more help and the richest should pay for it? The recently announced windfall tax on energy companies was an extraordinary moment: cash taken from big companies and handed to their customers. Is it time for more of this? Or are Robin Hood taxes, taking money from people who have earned it and handing it to people who haven't, essentially unfair? Isn't wealth inequality the very driver of human effort? We work, so we can become better off. Remove that incentive, and what happens to economic growth, on which we all rely? What is the case for redistributing the nation's wealth? Is it immoral to accumulate enormous personal wealth? Or is it acceptable for some people to become fantastically rich, provided that nobody is truly poor? Robert Kiyosaki, who was born in Hilo, HI couldn't help but notice the widening gap between the rich and the poor during his last trip to Hawaii only a month ago. Today's guest, who first interviewed Robert 30 years ago, and is also a resident of Hawaii, gives her perspective of what is going on. Yue-Sai Kan, is an Emmy-winning television host and producer, successful entrepreneur, fashion icon, bestselling author, and humanitarian. People magazine called her "the most famous woman in China” and Time magazine proclaimed her "the Queen of the Middle Kingdom." Yue-Sai explains the current climate in the Hawaii political system. She says, “We are supposed to have a two-party system, but in Hawaii one party is so powerful you don't hear from opposing viewpoints making things so impossible.” Host Robert Kiyosaki and guest Yue-Sai Kan discuss why the gap is growing between the rich and poor and why financial education is more important than ever before.
