Time to get the podcast machine fired up again to start the month of June. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann get you caught up on the latest news in the world of Iowa athletics. This week there is plenty to cover when it comes to Iowa baseball, Hawkeye men's and women's hoops, an update on Caitlin Clark and the abuse she is taking in the WNBA, and we have a lot of football news as well. We open the show discuss the news this past week regarding Iowa baseball and Rick Heller is looking for a new pitching coach. What's the latest on that front? Also the portal for baseball opens this week. Which players could be return for the Hawkeyes and what might the starting rotation look like for Iowa next season? Then we turn our attention to Iowa women's basketball. Jan Jensen could be making the hire of an assistant coach as soon as this week. What do we think that assistant might be like and what skill set do they need? We also talk about Jensen making a couple of new offers and hosting a 2026 visitor and we get a status report on the Class of 2025 recruiting. We then discuss the ugly play by the Chicago Sky towards Cailtin Clark this past weekend and how that whole situation is getting messy in the WNBA and how petty some of the players are being towards the former Hawkeye. After that it's Iowa football talk. We discuss the release of start times late last week and how the Hawkeyes now have start times for half their regular season games. We discuss the addition of another walk-on quarterback, Ben Kueter winning a U20 title this past weekend and what that could mean for his football season early on this fall, and a big Iowa Swarm event coming up June 17th at the I-80 Truckstop in Walcott. Finally we wrap up the pod talking Iowa hoops. Payton Sandfort is back, which is huge news for the Hawkeyes NCAA Tournament chances this season. And we update recruiting in the Class of 2025 after Fran McCaffery handed out a bunch of new offers in the middle of last week.
Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller joins The Gazette's John Steppe to talk about the Hawkeyes' slow start after a hyped preseason, recovering in a balanced Big Ten, Brody Brecht's recent resurgence on the mound, Duane Banks Field renovation plans and more.

It's a special edition of the podcast. We preview the most anticipated season of Iowa baseball in decades. The Hawkeyes are nationally ranked with one of the top starting rotations in all of college baseball and we tap into the knowledge of our baseball beat writer Kyle Huesmann and John Evans, who is on the call for the Iowa baseball radio broadcasts. We start with the the pitching staff, led by the potential All American Brody Brecht and including Marcus Morgan. We discuss the entire staff and who might be helping out in the back end to close out games. Then we discuss the situation at catcher with the starter out to begin the season. After that we go around a very strong group of infielders. How good can that group be and are they one of the best fielding groups in the conference? After that we take a look at the outfield group and how there are some stars that are emerging in those three spots. Finally, we look at the schedule, which is pretty challenging, especially in the non-conference slate of games and then wrap up with how this team and Rick Heller are handling the massive expectations heading into this season.
A lot of ground to cover on the podcast today. We are joined by Kyle Huesmann and start this week with the Iowa women's basketball team dropping a game on Sunday at Ohio State. Kyle gives his thoughts on the loss to the Buckeyes and what went wrong for Iowa and we discuss the play of Caitlin Clark in the contest. We then discuss the after the game courtstorm and our thoughts on the folks who seem to be blaming Caitlin Clark and calling her a flopper based on a slow motion video. We also talk about how security needs to be better for the opposing teams in those situations. Next we move on to Kadyn Proctor committing to the Iowa football program. What he said about his commitment to the Hawkeyes and what it might be like for the Hawkeye offensive line this fall. We also discuss why Iowa didn't tamper with Proctor. Then we update the on-going search for an offensive coordinator and when Iowa might have one in place with interviews taking place this week. Finally we wrap up talking Iowa basketball and the loss to Purdue and finally Kyle previews the Iowa baseball season that is the most hyped in the Rick Heller era.

Iowa head baseball coach Rick Heller joins Pat & company to talk baseball and more!
There are few roles more important than that of coach. Part mentor, part cheerleader, part teacher part disciplinarian, and sometimes even part father or mother figure. This week's Moonlighter fits those descriptors to a T. Marty Sutherland has spent most of his life in sports and played a prominent role in the lives of countless young men. Marty Sutherland checks all of the boxes of a prototypical Moonlighter. He is from smalltown Iowa, he played juco baseball, and he even sold insurance for a little bit. He is now the associate head coach of the University of Iowa baseball team. The first time Tim and Marty met was in a smalltown baseball tournament when Sutherland ripped a double off of the Moonlight Ace. They crossed paths again a few months later when the Cascade native was one of Tim's coaches at the Universtiy of Northern Iowa under Rick Heller. Since their days in purple and gold, Sutherland has stuck with Heller and is now at the University of Iowa. Marty Sutherland is one of the smartest baseball guys around. It is incredible to see the success the Iowa baseball program has had since the arrival of Heller, Sutherland, and the rest of the staff. As a coach, Marty Sutherland's fingerprints are all over that dugout. Few are able to help influence and develop young players the way that Sutherland has been able to. Even just watching the Hawkeyes play, a sharp eye can identify the impact that he has hadMany of us former athletes can think back to a coach who played a key role in our sports life. It might be because of how they built us up when we were down, changed our approach, or how they got after us when we needed it most. Marty Sutherland has been that influence on hundreds of young men and has played a vital role in the turnaround of the most prominent college program in Iowa.

This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, July 27. Tuesday's weather will fit the mold for most of this week: sunny, humid, and hot. According to the National Weather Service we can expect a high of 94 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area with sunny skies. The sky will remain clear Tuesday evening, with a low of 73 degrees. After more than a half-year of decline, the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in Iowa has been increasing in recent weeks despite widespread availability of a vaccine. With large public gatherings such as RAGBRAI and the Iowa State Fair looming — and another school year set to start in roughly two months — public health officials are expressing concern that the trend could worsen. Their message echoes in unison: If you have not already, get the COVID-19 vaccine. Nearly all new hospitalizations from COVID-19 — more than 97 percent nationwide — are of unvaccinated individuals, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. After a good start, Iowa's vaccination efforts have stalled in recent months, lingering at 55 percent for those age 12 and older. The emergence of the COVID-19 Delta variant has added to public health officials' consternation. The new variant appears to be even more transmissible than the original virus, and appears to be having a greater impact on young people. Linn County Public Health is offering $50 Walmart gift cards to residents receiving the COVID-19 vaccine at walk-in clinics taking place this week. Public health officials are offering the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible residents aged 12 years and older at five Cedar Rapids Community School District schools through Friday. The gift card offer one of the first major incentive programs offered locally since the shots became widely available earlier this year. All occupants safely escaped a North Liberty fire on Sunday. According to a city news release, the North Liberty Fire Department was called to a fire at 2:13 p.m. Sunday at 1557 Burr Dr. Authorities said neighbors had discovered a fire outside of the home and alerted the residents. Crews knocked down the fire, which sped through the eaves and into the attic of the townhouse. It was brought under control within 26 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene. A cat was also rescued. Iowa announced contract extensions for nine of its head coaches on Monday. The nine coaches receiving contract extensions were men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery, wrestling coach Tom Brands, women's basketball coach Lisa Bluder, soccer coach Dave Dilanni, field hockey coach Lisa Cellucci, softball coach Renee Gillispie, baseball coach Rick Heller, women's golf coach Megan Menzel and women's tennis coach Sasha Schmid. It was fun chatting with Rick Heller today. In his own words:I am a devoted follower and lover of Yeshua (Jesus), my Messiah. I am a husband, a father, a grandfather and even a great-grandfather by marriage. I have several degrees, including a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in human resources. I have had many careers, including: the Navy Nuclear Field, carpentry, computer instructor, and nursing in various capacities.I still wonder what I want to be when I grow up. Not really. I have had many titles, but my favorite one was given to me by a friend, whose anointing I’ve always admired. She once said to me that she saw me as a friend of God. I don’t deserve such a title, but it resonates in my heart. I can only hope.Sherry, my wife, and I have made our home in Florida for the last eleven years. We have a beautiful (if somewhat headstrong) dog, a Whoodle, named Maxi. He brings a lot of love, comfort and challenges into our home.Like everyone else, we have our ups and downs and times when life goes sideways. But we love the Lord. He is the foundation of our life and marriage. Life can be hard enough with Him. We don’t ever want to be without him.I am a sinner saved by grace, the unmerited favor of God, which I could never earn or deserve. It is in Yeshua, Jesus, my Lord and Savior, that I place my trust. When you read these stories, I hope you can catch a glimpse of His love for you. Here is a link to his book:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SJ5GN6Z/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=love+stories+from+messiah&qid=1610127489&sr=8-1

Lucas O'Rear grew up in a baseball family and had to make a choice after high school. Should he play baseball, following in his dad, brother, and mom's footsteps or does he play basketball? The deciding factor ended up being the opportunity to get a full-ride to play basketball and being given the chance to also play baseball for UNI. However, UNI dropped the baseball program after the 2009 season. Instead of transferring, O'Rear focused on basketball and made the most out of his opportunities, winning 6th Man of the Year in both 2009 and 2010. The most memorable part of that run was the win against Kansas and Ali's shot. O'Rear had 3 points, 5 rebounds, and one air-balled free throw in 17 minutes. As a two-sport college athlete, O'Rear had to make some major adjustments. Between college courses, D-I basketball, and committing to playing for Rick Heller, there were some major changes from high school in Nashville, IL. O'Rear had to find ways to throw a few times a week during basketball season and then use the first part of the season to get into baseball shape. In his one season of baseball at UNI, O'Rear was one of the standout players on the baseball team. When the Panther program was cut, transferring to Kansas and focusing just on baseball was an option. After sitting down with Coach Jacobson and his dad, O'Rear decided to stick to his commitment and play basketball at UNI. O'Rear knew his future in sports was more likely on the diamond than the hardwood, and after his junior basketball season, he was asked to work out for scouts… with an 8th grade as his catcher. That led to opportunities to play with Perfect Game and other opportunities to be scouted. This led to a 13th round draft pick by the Reds and signing to play Rookie League before his senior basketball season. After graduating from UNI, O'Rear went on to play Rookie and A ball from 2010-2012.

Rick Heller has turned the University of Iowa baseball program into a perennial Big Ten Conference and NCAA contender in his first four seasons as the Hawkeyes' head coach. Heller has injected new life into the Iowa program, leading the Hawkeyes to the best four-year stretch in program history, winning 140 games, advancing to two NCAA Regionals, and claiming the first Big Ten Tournament title in program history. It was Iowa's first conference title since winning the regular season crown in 1990. Under Heller's watch, Iowa has advanced to the postseason in four consecutive years for the first time in program history, he has coached five All-Americans and at least one first-team All-Big Ten selection each season, and Iowa has had 15 Major League Baseball Draft picks in four seasons -- the most in a four-year stretch all-time. Heller has also given the Hawkeyes an international flavor, taking the team to the Dominican Republic in 2016 and Taipei, Taiwan, as the United States representative at the 2017 World University Games. Heller led USA to a silver medal, as the team became the first American squad to medal in Universiade history. Heller is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association and serves on the ABCA All-American Committee. He is also a member of the Indiana and Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Associations. In 2008, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Heller has three daughters -- Tara, Alyssa, and Vivienne. His wife's name is Rachelle. The Douglas brothers are former standouts at I-35, the now defunct Northern Iowa baseball program under Rick Heller, and Brandon played for 7 years in the Detroit Tigers organization. Brandon retired after making it as high as Triple A with a big league spring training invite. Topics include the state of UNI Baseball towards the end, the carefree nature of summer league, and minor league baseball salaries.
The boys talk Big 12 with Pete Mundo from Heartland College Sports and Iowa baseball coach Rick Heller stops by.

Almost every style of meditation I've learned has been presented as "secular," but very quickly there is a Hindu chant, a photo of some old guru with a beard, or some other paraphernalia that looks and feels a lot like organized religion to me. I'm very interested in all world religions, but when I'm learning to meditate, I'd rather do that on its own. If you feel the same, you'll enjoy this week's Yoga Talk Show with author and meditator, Rick Heller. ------------ What You´ll Learn: How problems with Rick's vision problem and chronic pain spurred his initial interest in meditation How "mindfulness" can be defined as paying attention to what is going on in the present moment with an attitude that is welcoming and non-judgmental Why "loving kindness" meditation can be a great starting point for people who struggle to calm their mind How to differentiate meditative activities like gardening or walking from meditation practices and meditation as a skill Why meditation classes are often empty while yoga asana (pose-based) classes are usually full Links & Resources: Rick's Site Rick's Book Vipassana Meditation International ABOUT OUR GUEST Freelance journalist and meditation instructor Rick Heller has reported for the Lowell Sun and other New England newspapers and has been published in Buddhadharma, UUWorld, Tikkun, Free Inquiry, Faith Street, The Humanist, and Boston magazines.
