In today's episode, Robyn opens up about her experiences with family estrangement - specifically from her mother because of the unhealthy and unhappy relationship they had growing up. In this candid conversation, Robyn shares a very unfiltered picture of her estranged reality, and how she came to cut ties with her mother completely. But she also talks of the love for her grandmother, who took on a maternal figure role in her life and the deeply upsetting impact of her loss when Robyn was in her twenties. Kate and Robyn cover many topics, including loss of loved ones, abuse, and substance abuse to a degree too so if you are sensitive to these topics then please be kind to yourself. I'm so pleased to bring you this s2 bonus episode sponsored by Sage Appliances, with Cariad Lloyd, which we recorded in front of a live audience a month ago. Cariad is a comedian and writer and the creator of the cult podcast, Griefcast, where she interviews famous people (usually comedians) like Robert Webb, David Baddiel and Sara Pascoe about the human experience of death and grief, and which has won multiple British Podcast Awards.    I'm really interested in grief: why we fear it (especially other people's), why we expect grief to look a certain way, the lack of nuance in our understanding of grief. What I love about Griefcast is the way it democratises grief: there is no one way to grieve. Grief, as Cariad digs into, is not just very sad, it is funny, absurd, weird and life-expanding.   You can listen to a new series of Griefcast now, on all good pod platforms and find Griefcast on Twitter @thegriefcast. Tantrums are an inevitable part of living with a toddler. But with the prospect of weeks or even months of families cooped up together ahead of us, how can parents keep meltdowns (by toddlers and themselves!) to a minimum? Emily Jones is a professor of infant neurodevelopment and autism at the Birkbeck Babylab and she tells Jane what’s happening when a child has a tantrum, when and how to intervene, and gives top tips for parents trying to cope. Earlier this week, the former cabinet minister Amber Rudd tweeted “During Gov briefings am I the only one thinking ‘where are all the women?’ Why are there no senior women in the “war cabinet” or used to convey those critical messages? Equality means better decisions. Don’t pack the women away during a crisis.” Many were quick to reply that this was no time for quotas and that ability matters more than equality. But what are the problems with not including the different perspectives and lived experiences of women in decision making? We hear from former Conservative cabinet minister, Amber Rudd, Caroline Criado-Perez, the author of ‘Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men’ and Simone Schnall, Reader in Experimental Social Psychology and Director of Studies in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences at Jesus College, Cambridge. To mark the Spring Equinox, Radio 4 is broadcasting readings of seasonal poetry. Today we have poetry from the award-winning Welsh poet and playwright, Menna Elfyn. Robyn Donaldson is an amazing human. I heard great things about her before I even had the pleasure of meeting her. She is brilliant, humble, intelligent and feels a great sense of duty serving others especially when it comes to grief. On a normal weeknight in 2013, Dr Robyn Donaldson's husband did not come home from work. He had been killed in a motorcycle accident less than a mile from their home. Adjusting to life without her husband of two short years and partner of seven was far from easy. They had bought a house together earlier that year to fit their growing family. They had been planning to get pregnant to add to their current family of two daughters from his previous marriage. Now, these things would never happen, and nothing would ever be the same. Through Robyn's work as a psychologist in private practice, she had developed significant expertise in supporting people in loss, and yet all of her experience did not make her own grief any easier to manage. As she worked to absorb the emotional and financial impacts of her husband's death, she threw herself into her work, even accepting the nomination as president of her local psychological association. As time passed, Robyn felt less and less support in her grief. Although many in her life showed love and concern, people needed to get back to the routine of their own lives. Others confessed that they felt ill-equipped to help someone in grief, and seemed to vanish for months or years. Speaking to fellow grievers, she discovered that this is all too common and makes processing grief even more challenging. In trying to adjust to her new reality, she wanted to find a way  to help others who were going through similar situations. She joined forces with Laine Campbell and Keith Brings to help create a comprehensive set of community service and gift offerings that would help people support each other more deeply in times of loss. It is her hope that SolaceClub will make it easier for both people who are suffering a loss and for people who feel uncertain as to how to help others in grief. Dr Donaldson completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2011. Once licensed, she started a private practice which she continued 2 years prior to being offered a staff position with the Counseling and Psychological Services department at UNLV. In addition to her clinical work, Dr Donaldson served as Treasurer for three years and then as the President of the Nevada Psychological Association (NPA) from 2015-2016. Dr Donaldson also received an award for outstanding contributions to the NPA. She currently serves on the NPA's Executive Board as Past President. Dr Donaldson's husband died unexpectedly in late 2013. Since that time, she has been determined to use her own experiences with and clinical knowledge of coping with grief to help others who are struggling.
