"Disney was everything to me." Rory O'Malley ("The Book of Mormon," "Hamilton," "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee") joins David for this episode to chat Disney movies, the Parks, and making a difference in the world. From seeing "Beauty and the Beast" in the movie theater as a kid, to watching "Cinderella" multiple times, it's clear that this Tony Award-nominee has been a lifelong fan of the Mouse. Listen as Rory recalls his first trip to Walt Disney World when he was five years old, including an adorable story about meeting Mickey Mouse and loving "Peter Pan's Flight," and describes his admiration for Belle (and signing along to the movie's soundtrack, as well as wanting to be her). He and David discuss how he uses his voice and platform to push for positive change, and how the Disney stories echo these sentiments. Other topics on this episode include thoughts on when to bring kids to the Parks for the first time (and Rory sharing about the first time he brought both his mother and his son to Disneyland), how his best friend and college roommate (Josh Gad, also known as Olaf from "Frozen") had a letter from Disney CEO Michael Eisner on the wall of their dorm room, and what job Elder McKinley would have at the Disney Parks. Play along with Rory during "Turn it Off: Disney Theme Park Edition," where he answers questions related to when the Imagineers "turned off the lights" on different attractions, and share in Rory's dream of playing Wall-E on Broadway. Chuck Kyle has guided St. Ignatius high school in Cleveland to a record 11 football titles in the state of Ohio. He is a multitalented leader of men. He has taught English at Ignatius for years, and is very well versed in teaching the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, and of course William Shakespeare. How does the act of teaching English translate to the field? What does Chuck say about the safety of the gamer? He has been involved with USA football for years, and helps design ways to play the game in a more safe way for kids. He has thoughts on where the game is going. Kyle might be the only football coach to have led a young man to become a star actor on Broadway, through the teachings during his English classes. That would be Tony nominated actor Rory O'Malley. Also, Kyle spoke highly of his involvement with the Cleveland Browns , who he believes are ahead of the curve in working to make football safer for youths. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/john-telich/message

Rory is currently reigning as King George III in the touring production of the smash hit "Hamilton." It's a role he first played on Broadway for a year where he was the first actor to replace an original cast member in the production. He is best known for starring in the original company of "The Book Of Mormon" on Broadway. He received both Tony and Drama Desk nominations for playing openly closeted Mormon Elder McKinley and performing the show stopper "Turn It Off". Most recently he was seen on stage in back to back Off-Broadway productions at Second Stage's "Nobody Loves You" (Drama Desk nomination) and "Little Miss Sunshine." His broadway debut was in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and regionally, he created the role of Richie Cunningham in Garry Marshall’s "Happy Days The Musical" for Goodspeed Opera House and Paper Mill Playhouse. Rory expanded his repertoire of pasty white dudes by butchering the song “Cadillac Car” as lead singer of ‘Dave and the Sweethearts’ in the Paramount Pictures film "Dreamgirls." Most recently, Rory was seen on the CW's "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." He can also be seen on the small screen in episodes of "Partners" with Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence, "Nurse Jackie," "The Good Wife," "Law and Order: SVU," and "1600 Penn." This year Rory premiered his autobiographical show "Pub Crawl" to a sold out crowd at Joe's Pub in New York City. Pub Crawl is his tale of being raised in an Irish pub in Cleveland by his single mom and all the bar's eclectic patrons. Rory tells his hilarious coming of age story using classic Irish pub songs from The Wolftones, U2, Van Morrison and more with music direction from Tony and Grammy Award winner, Stephen Oremus. Rory is a Co-Founder of Broadway Impact, an organization that mobilizes the theater community to take action on fighting for marriage equality. Along with Jenny Kanelos and Gavin Creel, Rory was there from it's inception and has organized large rallies, phone banks, and theater events; all for the sake of marriage equality. Currently Broadway Impact is producing the play 8, conceived by Rory and edited by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black. 8 uses the original transcript of the trial that overturned Prop 8 in California and puts it on a stage for theaters all across the country to perform and hold talkbacks. Rory has had the pleasure of performing around the country in the piece with many great actors and activists including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Larry Kramer, Cleve Jones and many more. Currently 8 has been produced in over 400 theaters, including in all 50 states and in 7 countries. Rory lives in Los Angeles with his husband Gerold Schroeder. He is very happy:)

In the second half of the show, Tony nominee Rory O'Malley talks about how volunteering for the Obama campaign in 2008 helped shape him as a marriage equality activist and led to the creation of some the work that he is most proud of.
A new year's a time for goals and dreams. A time to make things happen. A time to roll with life's setbacks and turn things around. Broadway veteran Rory O'Malley (The Book of Mormon) did that in spades in 2016. The year started with him landing a lead role as Bill Gates in a musical, Nerds, that was supposed to make its Broadway debut in the spring. But just as the cast had finished learning the production, an investor pulled the plug. How's this for a turnaround? With his schedule suddenly cleared, O'Malley ended up landing the role of King George III in the smash hit Hamilton, which had just become a cultural force. In the latest episode of the Fortt Knox Podcast, as O'Malley shares his story, he also offers some tips that will help you get the most out of the year ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. This week Rory O’Malley, who plays King George in Hamilton, gives Will Leitch and John Heilemann an actor’s view on how Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump performed in the first presidential debate.
If you wandered down to a Midtown union hall in Manhattan one night in 2011, you might’ve encountered an unusual sight: Broadway stars, decked out in tuxedos and cocktail dresses, calling voters all over New York. They’d just left an awards dinner early, and without stopping to change they had descended on a marriage equality phone bank — as they had been doing for weeks. It was the work of Jenny Kanelos, a small-town girl who’d moved to the big city just a few years earlier. In her wildest dreams, she couldn’t have envisioned herself leading a movement. But just a few years earlier, she’d volunteered to work on the Obama campaign, and discovered within herself an untapped well of power. Jenny found that she possessed two secret weapons: an intense commitment to justice, and a community of allies ready to follow her into battle. She teamed up with her friends Gavin Creel and Rory O’Malley — themselves stars of the stage — and before she knew it, they were leading a rally in the middle of Times Square, drawing massive crowds to phone banks, and delivering boxes full of signatures to the Capitol. But organizing alone wouldn’t be enough to win equality. Despite the groundswell that Jenny and her friends led, legislators dismissed the public support and voted down a marriage bill. Now New York was about to find out what happens when Jenny gets pissed.
Candi and Randy welcome the Executive Director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Tom Viola. Tom has been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS advocacy for decades, working with the Broadway & theatre community to raise needed funds for a multitude of charities. In addition, Tom was one of the original producers of the Obie Award winning play "The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me," written and starring David Drake. Among many rave reviews, the New York Times called the play "rivetingly angry, intense, frenetic, frank and touching." Tonight, at the Gerard Lynch Theater at John Jay College, David Drake returns to a one night only celebration of his ground-breaking play. He has rewritten the play to include an all-star cast of openly gay theatre actors including Tony Award nominees Robin De Jesús, André De Shields, Rory O'Malley, RENT's Anthony Rapp, and Tony winner BD Wong. We talk to Tom about the birth of the play, it's impact on the LGBT community, it's relevance two decades later plus other efforts by BC/EFA. For info about the event tonight, go to BroadwayCares.org
