This episode is the finale of Season 6. Yes it's a wrap on season 6 and what a joy it has been. This season the podcast reached the milestone of 100 episodes and received its first award. I am over the moon to announce that the podcast has been awarded the Bronze and Listener's Choice 2024 Signal awards in the Artists and Designers Shaping Culture Category! Cheers to more seasons and more awards. Now on today's show you are in for a real treat because you have two Jersey girls, with Caribbean mothers, and theater backgrounds on the microphone. It was such a pleasure to sit down with none other than actorprenuer Lori Tishfield, who now resides in Toronto. We discuss how important it is to maintain a sense of self beyond your professional identity and sitting in a place of balance between internal validation and the need for external affirmation from the industry. We touch upon overcoming self doubt and societal conditioning so you can own your confidence and move through your career, business and life with agency. Reminiscing on how the regalness of the black actresses we grow up on and their mere presence was empowering and unapologetic, teaching us we are expensive. Our thoughts, feelings, and contributions to this world especially as black women are expensive and we should act accordingly. We dissect how rejection is protection, the need to sometimes pull the receipts from past experiences to remember things that have worked out before and not forcing doors shut before their time. This episode boils down to trusting your intuition as your compass, understanding that your path is uniquely yours, and pivoting with grace so you can see where the journey takes you. Lori Tishfield is an Actorpreneur simultaneously based in Brooklyn and Toronto. Lori's most recent live performances have been as a featured vocalist in André De Shields' concert series and in her recent and first solo show, Audra on a Budget, at Green Room 42. On television, Lori can also be found in Orange is the New Black and FBI: Most Wanted. Aside from the arts, Lori is the Founder of Natural Talent, an experiential staffing agency exclusively staffing actors in brand ambassador work. In the last 9 years, Natural Talent has partnered with over 300 brands and provided “survival jobs” for over 500 actors nationwide. This Fall, Lori has stepped in as the national facilitator of the Creative Entrepreneurship Project for the Entertainment Community Fund, educating artists nationwide on how to start their own businesses. Throughout the summer, we are working with the Perelman Performing Arts Center reimagined production of CATS called CATS: "The Jellicle Ball" to bring you a series of episodes with the cast and creative team. "A theater is a temple. This is the fourth institution where the five necessary questions are answered. You have to answer a question. You have to resolve a crisis. You have to lift a burden. You have to break a yoke. Take that albatross off the neck of the people who have come for redemption. That's why we come and sit in a dark place with strangers. It's a kind of atonement, right?" This episode features André De Shields who plays Old Deuteronomy in this production. Hear André share his thoughts on the production, how he created his character, and how he views the story of CATS. Plus, André gives a passionate defense for why Grizabella has to be the Jellicle choice in this production. The iconic musical “The Wiz” has returned to Broadway. The Black take on “The Wizard of Oz” debuted in 1974, featuring theater stars such as Stephanie Mills, André De Shields and Dee Dee Bridgewater. After decades of countless local stage productions and bootleg VHS tapes passed around among friends and neighbors, “The Wiz” is a beloved cultural touchstone for many generations of Black people.Host Kai Wright is joined by Jason King, dean of the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, to discuss behind the scenes details of the many iterations of “The Wiz,” and break down how it went from “mid” reviews to a Black cultural artifact. Plus, they take calls from listeners across the country about their connections to the show — including a special one from Schele Williams, director of the revival of “The Wiz” now on Broadway.Companion listening for this episode:Amber Ruffin Talks ‘The Wiz' Revival, Writing for ‘Late Night,' and Representation in Comedy (4/15/2024)The comedian breaks down how her long career writing and performing as a Black woman prepared her for her new venture: bringing the Black cult-classic "The Wiz" back to Broadway. Michael was born in the wagon of a traveling show... At least that's what it says on his website. He is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College and has been directing and producing in any and all mediums. Some recent projects are Broadway's Caroline, or Change revival (co-producer), off-Broadway's long running A Musical About Star Wars (director), and the decadent new soap opera, Mélange, starring Morgan Fairchild (editor). During the pandemic he produced and directed several high profile streaming benefits to raise money for various neighborhood institutions in need of some help. Save West Bank Cafe was a 10 hour Christmas Day telethon, followed by Save Birdland, The Musical of Musicals (the York Theatre) and a benefit for The Stonewall Inn to name few. Ultimately, we raised 1.5M and were honored that so many stars collaborated on these projects with him from President Clinton (both of them) to Sting, Whoopi Goldberg, Pete Townshend, Sean Penn nee Ciccone, Patti LuPone, André De Shields, Ana Gastyre, Demi Lovato and so many more.

Since her debut in 2004, she has released six studio albums and was the most nominated female artist at the 2019 Grammy Awards with six nominations, including Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Her memoir Broken Horses is a #1 New York Times bestseller. André De Shields' acting career spans over 50 years. While currently best known for his performance in the musical Hadestown, he also appeared in The Wiz, Play On!, Ain't Misbehavin', and The Full Monty, and has directed and choreographed several shows and appeared on film and television. Since 1967, Darcelle has been performing and running the Portland drag venue, Darcelle XV Showplace, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. I had the opportunity to speak with Darcelle and her friend and collaborator, Poison Waters (Kevin Cook) a few weeks before her death. This is part of our special series, the LGBTQ+ Elders Project. The banana we eat today is not the same kind our grandparents grew up eating. Today's variety, called the Cavendish, is generally regarded as the bland successor to the richer tasting Gros Michel (French for “Big Mike”) of yesteryear. But when a deadly fungus ravaged the Gros Michel in the mid-20th century, the banana barons had no choice but to make a switch. Mo talks with ‘Banana' expert Dan Koeppel about the surprising history of the fruit, and talks - and sings! - with Broadway legend André De Shields.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Shatzi Weisberger died this week at the age of 92. A lifelong activist, Shatzi was a fixture at marches and protests here in NYC and was affectionately known as The People's Bubbie. "I was a political lesbian for many years. I just loved being around lesbians...one of my earlier demonstrations was here in New York City and we did a die-in along with other people lying on the ground. And I started to cry because I felt that I was in the right place, doing the right things with the right people. I felt very together about it. I have been an activist ever since." In the later part of her life, Shatzi became a death educator and helped people to dismantle their fears and worries around dying. This interview was originally recorded in April 2022 and was one of her last. We wanted to reshare it today to help honor her and remember her remarkable life. "Prior to Hadestown, I played The Magical Negro. I have no regrets about that. But all the while...and this is going to sound corny, but it's true. All the while I was saying, 'Why doesn't someone cast me for my mind? For my intellect? Am I really just another pretty face?' And it came together in Hadestown." André De Shields talks about the five decades he's spent working on Broadway, being a long-term survivor of HIV, and arriving in New York City during the sexual revolution of the 1970s. Today, at 76 years old, he brings his Tony Award-winning portrayal of Hermes to the Broadway musical Hadestown eight times a week. “I'm the slowest moving entity on the stage, which mesmerizes people,” he told me. “They want to know, ‘Why is this person moving so monstrously slowly? He must know something.'” André shared some of his immense knowledge with me: stories about his coming of age sexual awakening with a woman twice his age, words of wisdom he learned from Sammy Davis Jr., and the lessons about learning to live with your shadow. Since his diagnosis with HIV and the loss of his life partner, André has had many conversations with death, but he has determined that the only way to live is to “enter the darkness. And if you persist, if you will be determined, if you will be hardy, if you will have sufficient stamina, you will enter the light.”
André De Shields, a self-styled Black hippie eager to live in "the citadel of self-expression," made his way to New York City from Chicago in the early 1970s to play Xander the Unconquerable, Ruler of the Sixth Dimension in Warp, billed as "The World's First Science Fiction Epic Adventure Play in Serial Form." It bombed. But soon after, De Shields talked his way into auditioning for the titular role in The Wiz, a groundbreaking Black reimagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What happened next changed the course of American Theater. Join Broadway legend and Tony Award winner André De Shields this holiday season, along with Stellene Volandes and William Li, for one of the greatest audition stories ever told.
When André De Shields won a Tony award for creating the agile, elegant messenger-god Hermes in the Broadway musical Hadestown, he said he was making good on a decades-old promise to be a native son Baltimore could be proud of. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on change for everyone in the world, but for actors in particular. Jacqueline Thompson, an actor, director, producer, and professor based in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the first actors taking to the stage as we enter our (hopefully) post-pandemic theatrical space. She will be playing Regan in St. Louis Shakespeare Festival's production of King Lear, premiering this June, starring André De Shields in the title role. Jacqueline has a rich history of community-engaged classical theater stemming from her involvement with St. Louis Shakespeare Festival's Shakespeare in the Streets program and furthered by the Regional Arts Commission's Community Arts Training Program. Her work has earned her accolades like a Visionary Award, which recognizes St. Louis women in the arts, the award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama from the St. Louis Theater Circle, and participation in the Theater Communications Group's Rising Leaders of Color program. Today, Jacqueline will be talking to us about how to effectively engage with communities through theater, how the pandemic has shaped recent performance, and how to make classical theater accessible to everyone. You can learn more about seeing Jacqueline in King Lear in St. Louis this summer here. Jacqueline is interviewed by host Emily Jackoway. Daniel J. Mertzlufft (@danieljmertzlufft) joins 2Old4TikTok this week! Dena and Melissa start the show talking about how excited they were to interview Daniel about his work on all the famous viral TikTok Musicals. They gush over him gushing about Alan Menken and “Beauty and the Beast.” TikTok celebrities truly are just like us. Daniel J. Mertzlufft Interview ~4:40Daniel tells us about his background in music, education, and science. He reveals how he first learned about TikTok from Luca Padovan at a theater festival. The first videos he liked were duets with accompanists to songs like “Defying Gravity.” We hear about how the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” musical was his first big hit on TikTok. Then he tells us about his next viral sensation, the Grocery Store Musical, and what happened when that hit Twitter. Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical ~16:15Rocky Paterra (@rockysroad, songwriter of “I’m an Accountant”) tagged Daniel in the original Ratatouille TikTok video by Emily Jacobsen (@e_jaccs). Then Daniel called upon inspiration from “The Little Mermaid” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” to create his version. His friend Cori Jaskier provided the female vocals. We hear more about the rise of the Ratatouille Musical, the coverage from Vulture, Buzzfeed, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times, the first statement from Disney, and the snowball of press leading up to his James Corden Thanksgiving appearance. He describes getting the call to create a benefit concert in less than a month and the work that ensued. Rehearsing with Kevin Chamberlin (@chamberlin_kevin), André De Shields, and Mary Testa. He tells us about his appearance on “Good Morning America” and “The Late Late Show with James Corden.”Daniel’s For You Page ~34:20Daniel is deep into Woodchuck and Sea Shanty TikTok currently. He gushes over his love for Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Stephen Schwartz, Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and “Beauty and the Beast.” He’s mostly on Musical Theater TikTok, Gay TikTok, Absurd Deep TikTok, and keeps seeing videos of the audio snippet of Jessie J singing “Night.” Broadway Stars on TikTok ~45:20Dena mentions some of her favorite Broadway stars on TikTok like Tyler Warwick(@tyler_warwick), Broadway Bob (@broadwaybob), and Laura Bell Bundy (@laurabellbundy) from the “Legally Blonde” musical. Daniel tells us a hilarious anecdote about playing Emmett in college. Some of his favorites are Kevin Chamberlin (@chamberlin_kevin), Scott Alan (@scottalanmusic), and Natalie Weiss (@thenatalieweiss). Besides musical theater stars, he likes Gabe Esco (@gabesco). But has no idea who the Straight TikTok stars are—is her name Allison Rae?Lightning Round ~51:10Daniel reveals his favorite TikTok Trends: Ratatouille (obviously), “Oh, she passed away, okay,” “Native New Yorker,” and the Harry Potter TikTok dance parodies. Least favorite trends are anything on Straight TikTok. Favorite musical: Rent. Advice for TikTok creators. He’d fill his Hype House with either The Gays of LA (Neil Patrick Harris), Jacob Collier (@jacobcollier), or the entire Ratatouille Musical team. The Broadway actor he’d most want to star in one of his shows is Andrew Barth Feldman (@andrewbfeldman_), Wayne Brady (@waynebrady), or Brendon Urie. He spills the tea on the Patti LuPone miscommunication on “The Late Late Show.” The craziest idea he’s ever had for a musical was with the Ratatouille team coming up with ideas for a “Breaking Bad” musical. The Saul Goodman song would have some real “The Music Man” vibes. Then we ask him to come up with a jingle for 2 Old 4 TikTok! Find TikTok videos from all the creators we mention on our blog (2Old4TikTok.com) and Instagram (@2old4tiktokpod).

André De Shields is an actor, dancer and singer with a career spanning over 40 years. He first came to national attention in 1975 when he was cast in the title roll of The Wiz on Broadway (a roll he helped to develop and create). Since then, he's been a mainstay on the Great White Way, as well as in television, film and regional theater. Here, André talks about growing up in Baltimore in the 1950s, coming through the 1960s before settling in New York in the early 1970s. But along the way, he delivers an incredible amount of knowledge, wisdom, history and personal philosophy. We begin the conversation by discussing André's appearance on the front page of the the New York Times Arts section, which happened to have been the day before we sat down to talk.Stream below or download from iTunes.
Candi and Randy welcome the Executive Director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Tom Viola. Tom has been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS advocacy for decades, working with the Broadway & theatre community to raise needed funds for a multitude of charities. In addition, Tom was one of the original producers of the Obie Award winning play "The Night Larry Kramer Kissed Me," written and starring David Drake. Among many rave reviews, the New York Times called the play "rivetingly angry, intense, frenetic, frank and touching." Tonight, at the Gerard Lynch Theater at John Jay College, David Drake returns to a one night only celebration of his ground-breaking play. He has rewritten the play to include an all-star cast of openly gay theatre actors including Tony Award nominees Robin De Jesús, André De Shields, Rory O'Malley, RENT's Anthony Rapp, and Tony winner BD Wong. We talk to Tom about the birth of the play, it's impact on the LGBT community, it's relevance two decades later plus other efforts by BC/EFA. For info about the event tonight, go to BroadwayCares.org
