David Harris is an Australian actor who somehow found himself moving from architecture school to the bright lights of Broadway. He shares his early passion for architecture and how he pivoted to a career in performing arts just three days into his studies. He looks back on his journey, including participating in talent quests at RSL clubs in Australia and having friendly competitions with Broadway performer Ricky Rojas. Being in the workshop and eventually being cast in "The Boy From Oz" marked a significant turning point in his career and what he considers his claim to fame. He reminisces about his experience working with Hugh Jackman in the show, and a memorable commercial shoot with him just before New York shut down for COVID (click here to watch). David reflects on the differences in how musical theatre is perceived in Australia, the UK, and the US, his personal experiences with it, and his frustrations with the lack of recognition for musical theatre actors in Australia compared to Broadway performers in the US. He emphasizes the critical importance of swings and understudies in theatre, and his gratitude for them in keeping the show running smoothly. While he's already managed to prove naysayers wrong, David has no plans on stopping when it comes to the pursuit of growth and constant learning. David Harris is a native of Australia, where he's one of the most acclaimed leading men of his generation. In the US, he has received critical praise for his performance of Dan in TheatreWorks' “Next to Normal”. He starred as Jean Valjean in the Connecticut Repertory Theatre production of “Les Misérables”, which was co-starred and directed by Tony Award winner Terrence Mann. He starred as Billy Crocker in Goodspeed's production of “Anything Goes” and as Father in Barrington Stage Company's “Ragtime” in 2017. He originated the role of Max Bronfman in Stephen Schwartz's new production of “Rags” at Goodspeed Opera House. After playing the role of the Duke on the first national tour of “Moulin Rouge” in 2022, he can now be seen playing the same role in “Moulin Rouge” on Broadway. When he saw too many kids without a focus and without something to do, especially as opportunities were fewer and farther between amid the pandemic, Dashine Moore took the steps to establish the Beat the Streets basketball program. Now in its third year, Dashine sees the value of the evolving program continue with the cost of traditional summer camps continuing to rise out of the reach of many young people and their families. Galvanizing the support of various nonprofits to make it all come together, Dashine has a particular drive to give back to the community as his own path has been a long and winding. This included five and a half years of incarceration. That experience is a lesson he shares with young people in the program to urge them to make better choices. His time away from his sons in prison also makes it all that sweeter to see the success of his boys, one in prep school and one who just won a state championship as a member of the Taconic High School basketball team. Dashine has a powerful story and I appreciate having the opportunity to share it in this episode. Also, we cover: Kicks for Kids and the support of Barrington Stage Company, the power of role models, legendary youth advocates Manny Slaughter, Shirley Edgerton and Valerie Hamilton, a community center, mentorship programs, financial literacy, his experience at Norfolk prison in Boston, his business Mr. Feets, the economics of sneakers, flipping sneakers, selling paintings, bringing back the Gather-In and more. Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
Freud Encounters C.S. Lewis as imagined by Mark St. Germain

"[in the play Freud's Last Session]... with the sound of the bombers both men react as they did the first time - with fear. But this time instead of disguising it they admit to it. That admittance was the bond between them. Freud also was shaken by the whole experience. At the very end of the play, and repeatedly through the play, there were reports on the BBC about the war. The BBC at that point had a live orchestra, and when the news was finished the orchestra would jump in and play music until the next news bulletin. Every time the news was over, Freud immediately turned it off, so he didn't have to listen to music. Lewis catches on to that at some point and he equates it with Freud's wall that he puts up to shield his emotions because he feels they are being manipulated. But at the very end of the play, after Lewis leaves, Freud listens to the radio and for the first time he doesn't turn off the music. The last image of the play is him just looking at the radio as if trying to really understand music and his own aversion to it.”        Episode Description:  The similarity is noted between the clinical encounter and the structure of Mark's play where there are two men in a room intensely engaging with each other. We discuss how the trajectory of the play, like in the consulting room, allows for the emergence of latent meanings to be revealed between Freud and Lewis. Mark shares with us what drew him to these two thinkers and how he created a storyline that would demonstrate the underlying emotional struggles of each, individually and together. It is set at the beginning of World War II, three weeks before Freud's death. The play touches on Freud's childhood, his intense relationship with his daughter Anna and his planned euthanasia. We listen to a reading of a piece of the play that entails a powerful encounter between the characters. Mark has adapted this play for the screen, starring Anthony Hopkins as Freud, that is currently being filmed. We close with his mentioning his fiction writing and an upcoming theatrical release The World's Happiest Man.    Our Guest:  Mark St. Germain writes for the stage, television, and film. He is a recipient of the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Lucille Lortel Award, and the Off-Broadway Alliance Award. Mark has written the plays Freud's Last Session (Best Play Award from the Off-Broadway Alliance), Camping with Henry and Tom, Forgiving Typhoid Mary (Time Magazine's “Year's Ten Best”), and Becoming Dr. Ruth, the story of Dr. Ruth Westheimer. A sampling of his other plays includes Best of Enemies, Ears on a Beatle, Scott and Hem, Dancing Lessons, and Eleanor. His play, The Happiest Man on Earth premieres in the summer of 2023 at the Barrington Stage Company. He has written a memoir, Walking Evil, and a thriller, The Mirror Man. His screen adaptation of his play Freud's Last Session has begun filming.      Recommended Reading:    Gay, Peter: Freud: A Life for Our Time      Jones, Ernest: The Life and Work of Sigmund Freud      Green, Roger Lancelyn and Hooper, Walter: C. From iconic stage roles, to cabaret and rock band performances, this performer is building a successful artistic career while also navigating an autoimmune disorder with grace. - “I would so much rather have tried and failed, or tried and not gotten to where I want to be, than to have never have tried.” An actress, singer, and songwriter, Lauren Marcus made her Broadway debut as Brooke in Be More Chill after previously originating the role at Two River Theatre in 2015, and again off-Broadway at Signature Theatre in 2018. She also starred as Amy in Company at Barrington Stage Company alongside Aaron Tveit, and as Brigid in The Humans at St. Louis Rep., a performance which earned her a BroadwayWorld Regional Theatre Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. As a retro pop singer/songwriter, Lauren performs regularly with her band around New York City, and in 2016 released her debut EP Never Really Done with You. She is also a veteran at cabaret clubs like 54 Below, Joe's Pub, and Rockwood Music Hall. Up next, Lauren will appear in the movie adaptation of Tick, Tick... Boom, and debut a brand new show on June 18th at 54 Below.  From Chicago, to New York, to Scotland, Lauren shares that she “always wanted to be an actor”. And like every artist, she has had a unique experience navigating life during COVID-19. She shares with us feeling like she's “living COVID backwards”, having felt fine at the start, but now like she's dragging; and how she pushed through to create her newest song (and video) “Big Hat” for the NPR 2021 Tiny Desk Contest. Lauren talks about her desire and drive to create and leave behind things that will outlive her; a legacy - things her future children can listen to. She candidly opens up about her journey with alopecia, both the internal and external struggles she navigates as a performer, and notes that losing her hair “affected every single aspect” of her life in a way that she never, ever would have guessed. We also discuss Lauren's upcoming show at 54 Below on June 18th!  In this episode, we talk about: Lauren's retro pop singer/songwriter style  Imposter Syndrome  How she and husband Joe Iconis support each other's work  Writing a one woman show about her Alopecia journey  The number one thing Alopecia has taught her  Leading by example, and the importance of visibility Connect with Lauren: IG @laurmarcus Twitter: @laurmarcus Web: LaurenMarcus.com Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. At Momenta, a dance piece entitled Meloudious Marco was created for Glauco in which he was featured in the lead role of Marco. Glauco was drawn to NYC in early 2017 and was given a scholarship in at Alvin Ailey from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, he was the featured dancer in Aria, a duet choreographed for him by Pedro Ruiz, with live accompaniment by the Camerata NY Orchestra. Glauco danced and acted the following year in Sasha Spielvogel's new musical Come Back Once More So I Can Say Goodbye — a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Glauco's next featured role was in Joshua Bergasse's musical A Crossing, performed with Barrington Stage Company. Glauco has teamed several times, beginning in 2018 to the present, with the award-winning German dancer/director Severine Reisp. Their films have been recognized in a number of international film festivals: A Tango to Remember– Best Romance Film, Los Angeles Film Awards; Best Woman Filmmaker, The Atman Film Festival; Cinematic Award Winner, Cyprus International Film Festival; Ruminate– Best Musical and Best Dance Choreography, Oniros Film Awards; Best Musical/Dance Film, Los Angeles Film Awards. Another film, Lucid, written and directed by Juan Wang has received a Best Film award from The Heibei Television Artists Association. Glauco costarred in this short film with the beautiful and talentedactress and formerAmerican Ballet Theater dancer, Elina GoldeMiettinen. His New York debut was as the romantic lead, Peter Latham, in Pierre Barillet's Forty Carats. His comic turn was followed by his hilarious performance as the effete Bob Lamb in Tina Howe's Museum. In a series of scene nights, Glauco's range has covered the hot-headed role of Ken in John Logan's Red, the sweet-hearted Cornelius in Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, the deceptive Morris Townsend in Ruth and Augustus Goetz's The Heiress, and the diabolic Adolf Eichmann Raul Wallenberg's Saved Me. In Soledad Bailada y Casi Compartida, presented at the University of Seville, and on tour around Spain. Glauco has been thrilled to work alongside Broadway and West End actors Anthony Newfield, Alison Fraser and Karen Archer in Richard Alleman's new play Adrift, playing the Brazilian, and provocative Zumba instructor, Flavio. Glauco has been honored to be part of special performances to benefit the Episcopal Actors' Guild and the Cape May Stage. Reviewed in the Times Square Chronicles, “Betsy (Alison Fraser) longs for something more, alongside interactions of the less virtuous kind with the handsome and sweet-talking Flavio, played seductively by the appealing Glauco Araujo (Spielvogel's Come Back Once More).” Recently, Glauco performed in a short bio-pic entitled Dance for Freedom directed by Severine Reisp, highlighting the challenges people of color face today, and which has garnered recognition as the First-Place Recipient of the Dr. David Milch Foundation/CCNY Award in short film competition. In her review, juror Timberkly Whitfield, program executive and producer for A&E, as well as a host on the History Channel and A&E, wrote: “Glauco Araujo is a beautiful dancer and you capture him in such a way that really moved me. I felt inspired by his story that even in the face of racism he doesn't see himself as a victim. Strong production values. You checked all the boxes on this one — FANTASTIC!”  Link from past Interviews  http://diversityrulesmagazine.com/2021/02/28/march-feature-interview-glauco-araujo/http://www.ourtownny.com/news/the-universal-language-of-the-arts-YE1547010https://elespecial.com/glauco-araujo-el-bailarin-que-ha-conquistado-de-brasil-new-yorkhttps://www.noticiali.com/glauco-araujo-sobreviviendo-a-traves-de-la-creatividad/

When Amy reached out to me to be a guest on my podcast, I was gobsmacked by her story. We had so many parallels in our stories. Amy’s passion is being a performing artist and like Amy, My first love and passion is music, singing and songwriting. Yet, it was during a very intense performing arts program I experienced a major event in both my mental and physical health. Although Amy’s story around mental health was slightly different than mind, she has found a way to beautiful intertwine art and healing at the same time.   Amy Oestreicher is an Audie award-nominated playwright, performer, and multidisciplinary creator. A singer, librettist, and visual artist, she dedicates her work to celebrating untold stories, and the detours in life that can spark connection and transform communities. Amy overcame a decade of trauma to become a sought-after PTSD specialist, artist, author, writer for The Huffington Post, international keynote speaker, RAINN representative, and health advocate. She has given three TEDx Talks on transforming trauma through creativity, and has contributed to NBC’s Today, CBS, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen Magazine, The Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, and MSNBC, among others. Amy has toured her multi-award-winning musical, Gutless & Grateful, to over 200 venues from 54 Below to Barrington Stage Company since its 2012 NYC debut, and developed her full-length play, Flicker and a Firestarter, with Playlight Theatre Co. Her multimedia musical, Passageways (original lyrics, music, book and mixed media artwork) has been performed at HERE Arts Center, Dixon Place, and the Triad Theater. Her plays have been published by Eddy Theatre Company, PerformerStuff, Narcissists Anthology, New World Theatre’s “Solitary Voice: A Collection of Epic Monologues,” and were finalists in Manhattan Repertory’s Short Play Festival, NYNW Theatre Fest, #MeTooTheatreWomen, "Women in the Age of Trump," and Tennessee Williams’s New Orleans Literary Festival, and performed across the country by students for immigration festivals, academic projects, and Sexual Assault Prevention Month. She is founder of "LoveMyDetour," a campaign creating seminars, workshops, curriculum, books, music, and performances designed to entertain, educate, and engage on the intersection of arts and social justice, is part of the National Initiative for Arts and Health in the Military. Her memoir, My Beautiful Detour: An Unthinkable Journey from Gutless to Grateful. was awarded 2nd Place Winner of Best Memoir/Autobiography for the 2019 CT Press Awards, and she is currently recording the audiobook. She is in the process of creating a performance combining puppetry, Butoh, and site-specific theatre on environmental justice, ecofeminism, and sacred feminine mytholofgy to encourage women to claim their role in preserving our planet and has launched a series of workshops, Step Into Joy, inspiring people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to claim a walking practice that inspires connection with their environment and respect for various ecosystems. See more at www.amyoes.com.   5 Takeaways from Amy’s Episode: Creativity can help you release trauma.  Do what feels good to you. We have the power and the energy to make a difference just by inhaling and exhaling. Believe in your vision. As this podcast goes to air we are moving into our next full moon. The sun sign is in Leo and the moon is full in Aquarius… a reflective time time to nourish our creations and break through our limitations. Aquarius energy teaches us to break free of our limitation and the social norms to find our true self. The vibrations coming in now are all about breaking free and finding new perspectives. And as we have been talking about... this full moon is allowing each of us to open up fully to our light… to that part that inspires us to go beyond... to heal our wounds... to know that we are all evolving - evolution - revolution. It is also about questioning your own consciousness and where each of us can awaken… individually and collectively. This full moon asks you to feel your truth and then send it back out into the consciousness around you to help share a new reality. Aquarius and Leo energy encourages us to know where we are and insures us to shed expectation from others, to rise above the fear of rejection and align with our essence.  When you can reframe your challenges and problems as portals of energy… ways to illuminate the lessons rather than as just limitations, you open yourself up to discover the immense power you hold within yourself to heal and let go of your emotional blocks.  All of this I talk about about on the Energy Focus of the week which you can find live on Sunday nights on Facebook or Instagram.  Download my free guide to help you set up your own daily Practice. Amy had ambitious plans for college and a Broadway career, until her stomach exploded the week before her senior prom. Months later, she awoke from a coma to learn that she might never be able to eat or drink again. After years on IV nutrition, her first bite of food awakened her senses to life’s ordinary miracles but also brought back memories of being sexually abused by a trusted mentor for months, just before the unexpected rush to the emergency room that fateful Passover night. With determination, imagination, relentless resilience, and an inner “hunger” for life, Amy created a roadmap where none existed. We’re so excited to have Amy on to talk with us today about how she’s overcome trauma, how her detour moved her on to this amazing path of creation that she’s on, and being a woman in the world! Nicolette Robinson is an award winning actress and was most recently cast as Jenna , the lead in the Broadway musical, "Waitress."  Born and raised in Los Angeles and married to the Hamilton Tony Award winning actor Leslie Odom Jr. , Nicolette opens up about her struggles and triumphs and takes us on an emotional journey that gives listeners an honest and beautiful account of what is is to live the life of an artist. This fall, Robinson made her Broadway debut stepping into the lead role of “Jenna” in the multiple Tony Award nominated musical, WAITRESS. With a book by Jessie Nelson, music by Sara Bareilles, and direction by Diane Paulus, the show has played to full audiences over almost 1,000 performances. On September 4, 2018, Robinson became the first African-American woman and the first mother to play the lead role. Robinson appeared Off-Broadway in the 2015 production of BROOKLYNITE at the Vineyard Theatre, directed by Michael Mayer from a book he co-wrote with Peter Lerman, which earned a 2015 Off Broadway Alliance Award nomination for Best New Musical. She also starred in the new musical, INVISIBLE THREAD, for director Diane Paulus and Second Stage Theatre. Of her performance, Time Out New York wrote that Robinson was “poised and possessed of an ethereal soprano… marvelous.” INVISIBLE THREAD began its life as WITNESS UGANDA – in which Robinson also starred – with book, music, and lyrics by Matt Gould and Griffin Matthews. It was based on the true story of Matthews' humanitarian trips to Uganda, and his work to fund his nonprofit, Uganda Project. The musical premiered in February 2014 at Cambridge's American Repertory Theater before transferring to Off-Broadway. Robinson also co-starred in Barrington Stage Company’s A LITTLE MORE ALIVE, with book, music, and lyrics by Nick Blaemire. In this heartfelt and original folk-pop musical, two estranged brothers reunite at their childhood home after their mother’s funeral. An unexpected revelation distorts their memories and uncovers secrets. Robinson starred as ‘Lizzie’, the hospice worker who’d been caring for the mother, and the Berkshire Eagle called her “luminous.” On television, Robinson co-starred with Ruth Wilson and Dominic West as ‘Jane’ on Showtime’s Golden Globe Award-winning drama series, THE AFFAIR. She has also appeared on HART OF DIXIE, UNFORGETTABLE, PERFECT COUPLES, and COLD CASE, among others. Nicolette received the Princess Grade Award for Theater and is a graduate of the University of California Los Angeles School of Theater, Film, & Television. She is primarily based in Los Angeles, where she resides with her husband, Leslie Odom Jr., and their baby daughter.
