To true fans, baseball is so much more than a sport. Some call it the perfect game. Some see it as a field of dreams. A portal to another dimension. Some see it as a road to God. Others—”heathen” we might call them—find the game unutterably boring. Too confusing, too long, too nit-picky about rules. In this episode, Yankee fan John Sexton (President Emeritus of New York University and Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law) joins Red Sox fan Evan Rosa to discuss the philosophical and spiritual aspects of baseball. John is the author of the 2013 bestselling book Baseball as a Road to God, which is based on a course he has taught at NYU for over twenty years.Image Credit: “The American National Game of Base Ball: Grand Match for the Championship at the Elysian Fields, Hoboken, N. A legal scholar by training, he served as president of New York University from 2001 through 2015. He is now NYU's Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law and dean emeritus of the Law School, having served as dean from 1988 through 2002.He is author of Standing for Reason: The University in a Dogmatic Age (Yale University Press, 2019) and Baseball as a Road to God: Seeing Beyond the Game (Gotham Books, 2013) (with Thomas Oliphant and Peter J. Schwartz), among other books in legal studies.A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of 24 honorary degrees, President Emeritus Sexton is past chair of the American Council on Education, the Independent Colleges of NY, the New York Academy of Science, and the Federal Reserve Board of NY.In 2016, Commonweal Magazine honored Sexton as the Catholic in the Public Square. The previous year, the Arab-American League awarded him its Khalil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Award; and the Open University of Israel gave him it's Alon Prize for “inspired leadership in the field of education.” In 2013, Citizens Union designated him as “an outstanding leader who enhances the value of New York City.”He received a BA in history and a PhD in the history of American religion from Fordham University, and a JD magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Before coming to NYU in 1981, he clerked for Judges Harold Leventhal and David Bazelon of the DC Circuit and Chief Justice Warren Burger. He married Lisa Goldberg in 1976. Let's Parent on Purpose: Christian Parenting, Marriage, and Family Talk
Most of us grossly underestimate how much our extended family is going to affect our marriage. Jay walks through a number of ways your childhood home and extended family shape how you walk into your marriage. He lists several situations where extended families impact your marriage throughout the years. And finally he gives a list of questions to help you process and even thrive through your extended family circumstances. Questions for couples to consider: - What are the situations we need to address and repent of? - In which relationships do we need to develop firm boundaries? - Which circumstances do we simply need to accept as one of the particular crosses that Jesus would have us bear as we serve one another and our family? - What are the opportunities we see to build on what we have and grow in fruitfulness as a family? - If we could dream, and God would help us to be a part of a multigenerational family that he would use to bless the world, in what ways would we like to see that happen? About 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. There are many reasons given, but just about every single divorce boils down to one common denominator. Listen as Jay explains how dangerous hardness of the heart is in a marriage. Then walk through these questions in your own marriage: - Am I being honest with myself, really? - Who am I receiving council from? - Are my ears hard? - How have I contributed to the current state of our marriage? - What’s at stake? Have I counted the costs? - When I made my vows to my spouse and God, did I intend for this current issue to be an exception? - Am I believing the gospel in my marriage? - What is the major step of repentance or the baby step of resolution God is calling me to take? On the outside, Steve & Lisa Goldberg looked like the perfect couple. On the inside, they were miserable. This reality had slowly been building in the first six years of our marriage. It exploded with revelations of resentment, betrayal, brokenness, and fear. But God welcomed a prodigal daughter home, saved one of His own and restored a marriage. Listen to Steve and Lisa share their transparent story of failure, redemption, and restoration. Steve & Lisa founded Side By Side, a nonprofit organization inspiring and encouraging couples to value, nurture and restore their marriages. Their deepest desire is to see all marriages God-centered and thriving. Over 90% of the couples Side By Side has served have reconciled marriages! They live in Raleigh, NC where Steve is a Worship Pastor and Lisa is the Executive Director of Side By Side. They have a fun-loving 8 year-old son and a rowdy Shih Tzu.
I think direct indexing is going to be a major innovation in the world of wealth and asset management. It will help the RIA and wealth management world deliver on the promise of financial planning. It will also help rationalize the business model of many advisors as clients request more specialization around their affairs. The impacts could be enormous and many players are entering the space. To help us understand the concept of "Direct Indexing", I spoke with LISA GOLDBERG, PhD. Lisa is the Head of Research at APERIO- a $41B asset manager with 21 years of experience in the space. Aperio was recently acquired by Blackrock. Lisa is the Professor of the Practice of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, where she directs the Consortium for Data Analytics in Risk (CDAR). We talk about what "Direct Indexing" is, how it works and why it will be important for investors. (DISCLOSURE: This podcast is meant to educate around the topic of "Direct Indexing" and is not specific investment advice.) The Framework of Direct Indexing In your experience, how are portfolios typically implemented in the wealth management industry and what could be improved? Describe the concept of Direct Indexing- (1.0 Beta portfolios with fewer positions than the index. This allows buy/sell customization around other metrics like tax lost harvesting, ESG considerations or concentration management) Why is this important? While this isn't a new concept, why is this a step forward and what allows this powerful tool to be available for more investors? Direct Indexing vs Index Funds, ETFs, Mutual Funds How does this work? (Without revealing the secret recipe!) What goes into the investment process for your direct indexing solutions? How do your programs systematize prudent tax loss harvesting? What factors do you focus on? Issues: Certain sectors and securities often make up the lion's share of out-performance- what is the process to ensure proper sector representation? How do you make sure that the portfolio does not fall too far out of whack? What happens when a clients' preferences or situation doesn't intersect well with your process? Benefits Focusing on tax alpha (and knowing that each person's tax situation is different)- Is there a consensus on how much return on a tax-loss harvested portfolio can add? Or put another way, how much do investors leave on the table with "non-tax aware" investing? How does this help deliver on the promises of financial and tax planning? How does this help clients? Are there any long-term projections you can share on how much clients could benefit? How does this help client advisor's that implements asset allocations? Every time they attempt to lose weight, they never address what got them to overweight in the first place. Their mindset and limiting beliefs need to be addressed. Lisa Goldberg is the founder and owner of LSG Public Relations in New York, Los Angeles and London. She represents talent and creatives all across the board in film, television, theater and music, as well as in charity work, at bars and for red carpet events. Her clients have been nominated and won Emmy’s, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Grammy’s, Independent Spirit Awards and Tony Awards, and participated in campaigns for multiple Oscar nominated films. Lisa maintained a successful career in the theater for a while, but then she suddenly started getting sick. After struggling with an autoimmune disorder which made her unable to perform, she had to move back home with her parents in South Carolina for a few years to seek treatment. But New York City was still calling her name, and once she was in remission, she packed her bags, went back, and “had to figure out what she wanted to be when she grew up.” Lisa shares how a chance offer to do in house PR for one restaurant eventually turned into two restaurants, which turned into phone calls with George Clooney’s publicist. A publicist who would later become her mentor, and recommend she start her own firm. So she did, and continues to work successfully almost 14 years later. Will you share about that discovery and what life looked like in the months following? (20:01) Did your husband immediately agree to go to counseling? Was it easy for him to walk away from his mistress? How was that process for him? Lisa Goldberg is a nutritionist and behavior/lifestyle coach with a Masters degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. She is a Certified Nutrition Specialist, a Certified Dietician/Nutritionist licensed by New York State, and Certified in Adult Weight Management by the ADA. Lisa has been coaching clients since 2001 and specializes in coaching on mindful eating, mindset, habit/behavior change and overcoming emotional eating. Her clients learn how to create sustainable changes that empower them to lose unwanted weight for good. Lisa is the author of the book FOOD FIGHT –Winning the Battle with Food and Eating to Achieve Sustainable Weight Loss. She served as the nutritionist on the New York Stock Exchange where she created HealthCoach, a healthy lunch program that delivered healthy meals to Wall Street traders from 2003-2013. She is also a personal trainer certified by ACE since 1994. Lisa has her private practice on the Upper West Side in New York City and coaches clients virtually around the world. Growing up Lisa was a fit and active kid. It wasn't until she entered college that she struggled with diet and fitness. Lisa felt led to get involved in the fitness industry and eventually went back to school and obtained her degree at NYU in Clinical Nutrition. Now, Lisa focuses on helping others with habit behavior and mindset change. Lisa shares tips on knowing why you are eating, slowing down when eating, and eating to contentment. Self awareness, self talk, and the way that our childhood patterns have formed our adult behaviors are all areas that Lisa encourages her clients to be mindful of. Lisa encourages her clients to eat real foods and to stay away from protein shakes and protein bars, be present while eating and pay attention to when you begin to feel content. One way that Lisa takes the upgrade is changing her mindset by stepping out of her comfort zone and encouraging herself to do things that make her feel uncomfortable. Daily upgrades or non-negotiable for Lisa are giving herself what she needs such as going to bed early, stretching, going to the gym or felling ok with lying on the couch and resting. Lisa loves her coffee, avocado toast, eggs, chicken meatballs by Butera and a pair of blue jeans from White House Black Market. Something that Lisa struggles with that most people don't know is that she doesn't love going on stage, but she pushes through by realizing her limiting belief and encouraging herself by speaking truth to herself Connect with Lisa: Instagram: @lisa_goldberg_nutrition Facebook: @lisabgold Website www.lisagoldbergnutrition.com Connect with us→ via social media: Facebook: www.facebook.com/anaturalshift Instagram: www.instagram.com/anaturalshift/ Follow Julie-->www.instagram.com/julie_ann_davey/ Follow Kari--> www.instagram.com/karicoody/ On the web: www.anaturalshift.com Download our FREE ebooks: Top 3 Health Habits Upgrade your Cart - chip edition Check out our Brand new ebook: Upgrade your Cart: Lunchbox edition

“Weight and food have kept you trapped in a life you don’t love. It’s time to finally change your habits and behaviors, and break all patterns and conditioning around food and eating. It’s time to love yourself and love your life!” Those are the words of Dr. Mowll’s guest today — Nutritionist Lisa Goldberg. Lisa received a Master’s degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. She believes in eating real — not processed — foods. She also believes in ‘everything in moderation’ and not being deprived or counting points and calories. She says, “When you begin to create an awareness of what your habits and behaviors are around food you can ‘change your brain’ and your relationship with food. You will be able to stop that negative and self-sabotaging voice in your head that keeps you from reaching your goals and maintaining your ideal weight.” Her goal is to help people make long-term changes and not just give them quick fixes or crash diets. She teaches you how to make the right food choices to help you lose the weight for good. In today’s interview, Lisa and Dr. Mowll discuss how mindset and behavior change are essential to sustainable weight loss, how to deal with night-time eating habits in a healthy way, the importance of enjoying the food you’re eating and finding recipes that excite you, and ideas for rewarding yourself for positive behaviour and reaching your goals. She also reveals the main reason why people gain weight back after they lose it on a diet (and how to solve that problem), the importance of keeping a food journal, and describes the best ways to address negative self-talk and creating awareness around the messaging you’re sharing with yourself. A drama in three acts, all centered on the Fortress of Masada, a remarkable bastion perched above the Dead Sea in Israel. King Herod builds a pleasure palace, the Zealots make their last stand against Rome, and Israel returns at last. There are no heroes here, no villains, just complex people doing great and terrible deeds. Josephus, historian/traitor, takes us through the story of the Great Jewish Revolt and the destruction of the Temple. Masada visitor Lisa Goldberg tells us about the experience of climbing up (and down again) and exploring the ruins. And we eat traditional holiday goodies: sufganiyot and just in time for Purim, hamantaschen. Plus Israeli breakfasts.

Emotional Eating VS. Mindful Eating Lisa's personal struggle with emotional eating started when she left her home and headed off to college. The absence of a family to watch her eating habits led to uncontrollable eating and quick weight gain. Lisa had gone on and off in trying different crazy food diets, and up and down in keeping the same weight. Lisa went through the same unhealthy cycle again when she moved to New York. She went back to yo-yo dieting which made her gain weight even more. Until somewhere in her 30's, Lisa decided to come back to personal training. Today, Lisa is a lifestyle health coach, Certified Nutrition Specialist, a Certified Dietician/Nutritionist licensed by New York State, and Certified in Adult Weight Management by the ADA. Lisa finished her Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. She served as the nutritionist on the New York Stock Exchange and created her business HealthCoach that delivered healthy meals to traders from 2003-2013. She is also a personal trainer certified by ACE since 1994. "My mission is to help people change the old voice in their head and change their relationship with food and themselves so they can stop emotional eating and yo-yo dieting." - Lisa Goldberg Changing your mindset, self-talk, habits and breaking old patterns and limiting beliefs is the key to losing weight, preventing emotional eating and keeping it off. "You can go on any diet under the sun, and if you comply, you will lose weight. But if you don't change what caused you to gain the weight, to begin with, the weight will eventually come back, and this is why diets don't work." Luke Powell was very young when he snuck into the world of food – he was enrolled in culinary classes at 15 (despite being far below the 17-year minimum cut-off) and by 19, he found himself in the kitchen at the prestigious Rockpool, while crashing at the dodgiest hostels in his off-hours. Throughout his career, he's witnessed amazing things – the strangest party trick performed by a head chef in New Zealand; staff tackling 10-kilogram zucchinis at Mugaritz in Spain; and many memorable incidents at New York's Blue Hill at Stone Barns – including an encounter with a Jewish pig farmer whose mother had yet to learn of her son's choice of work. Locally, Luke's CV is impressively well-rounded: after being head chef at fine-dining institution Tetsuya's, his next move saw him slinging burgers and making trash-can bacon at the extraordinarily popular Mary's. And after some time with Mat Lindsay at Ester, he finally got to open his own place: LP's Quality Meats. In this podcast, Luke charts all the fascinating directions that his career has taken – and explains why a Southern Pride smoker that cost as much as a small car (and is just as big) is the nerve centre of his restaurant. He also talks about one of the “top 5 best things I've ever eaten in my life”, handling the minefield of dietary requirements and his favourite places for dining and drinking in Sydney. Catch Luke at the upcoming event, Burgers, Ribs & Beers: The Ethics of Fast Food, which takes place on October 13 at The Lab, Level 1, Legion House, Castlereagh Street, Sydney, for Good Food Month. And huge thanks to everyone who has ultra-generously spread the word about the podcast, including Pinbone's Mike Eggert, who name-checked it in episode 6 of The Mitchen; and Chris from MAB vs Food, @KEboyts and Lisa Goldberg from The Monday Morning Cooking Club, who all left super-nice comments in the iTunes store. You're all legends! And if you like what you hear and also feel like dropping a (hopefully nice!) review on iTunes or telling your friends about this podcast, that would be hugely appreciated (but not expected)!
