Who gets to tell the story? It's the season finale, and it feels like a perfect time to travel back to 2015, when a blockbuster hip-hop musical about America's founders took the world by storm. That's right... Today, Peter and Nathan return to the room where it happened and consider the theology of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. _________________________________________ You'll hear: My Shot / Wait For It / The Ten Dual Commandments: Hamilton & Burr—like Valjean & Javert, like Jesus & Judas—represent oppositional forces, responding to similar circumstances with radically different approaches to life. They also each get a great “I Want” song. Burn / Quiet Uptown / Say No To This: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Angelica Schuyler Church and the various roles that women play in this story. What does forgiveness look like – and what does Eliza see at the end of the musical? One Last Time / Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Few other musicals are so associated with presidential administrations as Hamilton is with Barack Obama. We think about the connections between the Hamilton project and the Obama project, wonder about the soft nationalism at the heart of this story, and think critically about the legacy of George Washington. Who gets to tell the story? You'll hear Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and the cast of the 2015 Original Broadway Cast Album. It won a Grammy. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Phantom of the Opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jesus Christ Superstar! On Wednesday's show: This week's winter freeze is nearly over, and the Texas grid has held up well. If many were to blame for grid failures in 2021, who gets credit for this week's relatively smooth sailing? It's a political question and one we answer in this week's political roundup, along with the Iowa caucuses, looking ahead to New Hampshire and South Carolina in the GOP presidential race, and other developments. Also this hour: Former Houstonian Renée Elise Goldsberry, who won a Tony for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, returns home for a concert Saturday night at the Hobby Center. She tells Houston Public Media's Ernie Manouse how her long career in acting and singing began right here in the Bayou City. And, ahead of a NOVA episode tonight on the James Webb Space Telescope, we hear from one of the folks behind the project that's brought us remarkable high-resolution images from deep space.
Tony Award-winner Renee Elise Goldsberry graces us with the story of her theatrical journey, from Houston's bustling stages to the bright lights of Broadway, most notably as Angelica in "Hamilton." In an intimate conversation, Renee reveals the profound influence of the LGBTQ+ community on her and the theater world at large, and reminisces about her Houston upbringing that so deeply sowed the seeds of her passion for the arts. The cultural tapestry of the city, from its culinary to its artistic vibrancy, comes alive as we traverse her memories and look ahead to the exciting developments in Houston's theater scene.Houston's local theater productions and their intersections with politics find a spotlight in this episode, as we wrap up a year that saw triumphs like "August: Osage County" and innovative twists on classics like "The Turn of the Screw." We don't just stop at the stage; the political stage takes center stage as well, with John Whitmire's mayoral victory and Mario Castillo's council election, underscoring the undeniable link between the arts and civic engagement. This segment peels back the curtain on the movers and shakers reshaping Houston's cultural and political landscape. We bring our focus to the podcast platform, celebrating the evolution of Queer Voices from its radio origins to its current status as a beacon for diversity and discussion. Behind the scenes, Brian Levinca, Andrew Edmondson, and Deborah Moncrief Bell are the maestros crafting each episode's narrative, as we strive to amplify the stories that shape our community. Join us on this auditory adventure where we share advice, laughter, and the constant reminder that our shared experiences, whether on stage or in the voting booth, are what weave the rich fabric of our society.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that #SheHulk is one of #MarvelStudios hottest new shows. While, naturally, some "fanbros" are mad that there's a whole show that focuses on a strong woman with an extensive education that she worked hard for for years, they can stay mad! Art imitates life in the series, as that's one of the core obstacles in the show this season. But SHE-HULK is a funny show with full of the Marvel razzle dazzle! Can a superhero find love as herself? How will she navigate being a lawyer, a superhero, and dating? And having people trying to steal her blood? And, of course, there's Titania (Jameela Jamil), who is a vapid, mean, pretend "boss girl" spreading her particular brand of fake "love and light" while she is intent on bullying Jennifer Walters/SHE-HULK. Apparently, her obsession is sparked by little more than narcissistic jealousy. She wants to be the only one getting anything or any attention, or else she doesn't feel special and "highly favored". It's truly a show that taps into the age of social media! In this interview #reneeelisegoldsberry and #JoshSegarra talk about what it was like to work with SFX on the show. #shehulkofficial drops Thursdays on #disneyplus! #TatianaMaslany #JameelaJamil #GingerGonzaga #MarkRuffalo #JoshSegarra #TimRoth #RenéeEliseGoldsberry #BenedictWong #PattyGuggenheim #Marvel #Disneyplus #Hulk --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nancygandcorryg/support

9/9/22 - Renee Elise Goldsberry And The Kindness Of Strangers by The Lisa Wexler Show

This week, as a lovely pairing with our last episode on the Stephen Sondheim masterpiece: Company, the gays are taking a left turn into the spoof realm. Today, they're talking about the episode from season three, of the hilarious mockumentary comedy series: Documentary Now, which gives the fictionalized account of the cast recording of the (very) short-lived Broadway musical: CO-OP! The episode is itself, a parody of the documentary about the grueling recording of the original cast album of Company. The hilarious score for CO-OP (not COOP), was partially written by comedic geniuses Seth Meyers and John Mulaney (who also plays a parody of Sondheim to great effect). The gays talk about the amazing cast, which includes a mix of comedians and Broadway celebs such as: Renee Elise Goldsberry, Alex Brightman, Paula Pell, Richard Kind, and more! Arron and Zacary go through all the hilarious songs, and of course rate the episode on the trusty “Gay-o-meter”. To close out the show, it's Arron's turn to surprise Zacary with a surprise video for them to watch and react to! It's a real fun, Broadway romp today, so be sure to tune in!
On this week's entertainment-themed Round 2: Girls5Eva season 2 ends with a knock-down, drag-out fight between two unlikely characters, and it's a joy to behold (and is being added to "Janet Kicks Some Demon Butt" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJoJaRHtwhc] on Terri's fire-me-up playlist. This show is a delight and we're in for season 3 if there is one. We'll start with the first episode, "Persons of Interest."
Long awaited, much anticipated, Maya and Angela touch on so many random things (rock n' roll, Bobby Flay, Etsy sex toys) while somehow predicting the future? Maya talks about her relationship with singer, rapper, and flutist, Lizzo, after watching her new show Lizzo's Big Grrls. She concludes that Lizzo is about as good as she can get for a public figure but has two strikes against her (being a "good fat" and making the god forsaken brand Yitty). Little did they know that an impending third strike was hurtling towards home plate as they spoke. There's lots of Lesbianism in this episode, at least more than usual. As Maya talks about the movie Saving Face (2004) and its casual racism in a seemingly idyllic Chinese-American Lesbian utopia (Flushing, Queens), Angela recounts watching a She-ro chef documentary and was genuinely all over the damn place. All this is followed up with a rousing and extremely Queer game of fuck, marry, kill that features celebs including Karla Souza, Ever Maynard, Gara Loning, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareillis, and Busy Phillips. Is Sara Bareilles a national treasure? Dan thinks so, and he'll let you know as he collects his thoughts on the genius of the Peacock original series, Girls 5eva, starring Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pelt, and Busy Phillips. More importantly, though, Dan continues his journey through Europe, telling all kinds of stories about his time in Bavaria. That's right, Dan went to Munich, Germany, drank beer at the Hofbrauhaus, saw Marienplatz, and ate plenty of bratwurst, other sausages, and schnitzel. #WeNeedToTalk is back for its 6th Season! On the first episode of the season, Malynda chats with Broadway Veteran and Singer/Songwriter Terron Brooks. Terron Brooks has traveled many roads in his life and career. He welcomed 2021 by signing a deal with Mercia Records with distribution through SONY MUSIC/The Orchard Internationally. A native of Southern California, he's had the pleasure of performing with many artists including Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, David Foster, Randy Jackson, Stephanie Mills, Peter Cetera, Lizz Wright, Yolanda Adams, Sheila E., and One Republic. In the grand tradition of movies like This is Spinal Tap and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the new Peacock series Girls5eva is a silly parody of the music industry. In it, four down-on-their-luck members of a fictional late-90s girl group reunite to stage a comeback 20 years later, and find that the music industry has changed a lot since then. The show features a stacked cast of musical and comedic talent, including Sara Bareilles, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell. And the music's pretty catchy, too.
This week, Busy and Caissie welcome Busy’s sister Leigh Ann as their guest co-host. Find out how the Philipps sisters pulled off the Mother’s Day surprise of a lifetime! PATRON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our patron supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard! Chris Staron is the creator of Truce, the award-winning Christian podcast that looks at history to deep dive into the Christian Church. You’re going to hear more about him and his work when you press that play button - and all of it is such good stuff - but my goodness, after hearing his podcast, I just had to have him on the show! In fact, the latest episodes of Truce, as of this recording, have been on the founding fathers and other important aspects of American history, so it made sense to have him on for our Hamilton episode! For starters, Chris shares his absolute love for Hamilton, and how he’s been a huge fan since it toured! We also dig into its questions on legacy, pride, and the unique benefit to having a story span many years. Then, we run headfirst into some fascinating trivia I collected for this episode, which sparks some great conversations on cut content and cultural impact. Afterward, Chris shares some historical inaccuracies that give insight into the way Lin-Manuel Miranda refined the flow of his play. And finally, I ask Chris what he thinks about the criticism helmed against Hamilton for its somewhat ironically titled 'whitewashing' of the founding fathers. Hamilton is Rated PG-13 for language and some suggestive material. We're also talking about Sondheim, the demands of good parody, and (of course) cocaine. Our intro is by Andrew Byrne, and our outro is by George Benson. Want to leave us a voicemail? We're kicking off season two with 2 episodes about the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Hamilton. Featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Director Tommy Kail, Producers Jeffrey Seller & Oskar Eustis, Alex Lacamoire, David Korins, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, and more, these episodes will dazzle both the Hamilton super-fans and the casual ones as we find out how the show developed from a vacation beach read to a genre-bending international phenomenon. Part 1 takes us all the way back to 2008 when Lin-Manuel Miranda picked up Ron Chernow's book for the first time and, as Lin says, heard hip hop songs rising off the pages. From there, Lin begins work on a concept album called The Hamilton Mixtape. After a fateful performance of the Mixtape, the wheels are set in motion to develop the album into an off-Broadway musical in partnership with The Public Theater. As the off-Broadway production approached opening night, the creative team knew the work was good, but as The Public Theater's Oskar Eustis says, anybody who says they knew what Hamilton would become is lying. We don't usually play favorites here at the Theater People Podcast, but for us, Renee's turn at Angelica Schuyler in the mega-hit "Hamilton" is the performance of the season. And her performance of the song "Satisfied" is one of the most genuinely riveting pieces of storytelling to hit the stage in years. For this episode, we talk about how she won the role, the experience of starring in one of the most popular and groundbreaking shows in recent memory, and how she balances her work and family life.
