Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

Dave Broadfoot was a stalwart of Canadian comedy for years, from his work with the Royal Canadian Air Farce, to solo tours and well-received books. Part of the secret was that Dave was proudly Canadian in his craft -- he once said he didn't want to do "Americana" comedy -- his roots and humor were strictly north of the border. It showed in his classic characters including hockey legend Bobby Clobber, Sgt. Renfrew of the RCMP, and a clueless member of Parliament from Kicking Horse Pass (and a member of the New Apathetic Party). He did it all with a style that was affectionately irreverent and full of details only a true Canadian would know. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows, eh." Want more Broadfoot? Most of the clips in our show this week comes from this fine collection of the Best of Dave Broadfoot from his days on the Royal Canadian Air Farce -- all of his beloved characters are here so crack open a Molson and enjoy a master of Canadian comedy. https://fb.watch/tXbKsxCC-V/ Dave was a fine standup and a favorite at Montreal's Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. This is one of his most famous riffs -- looking at the differences between Canadians and Americans. https://youtu.be/MBxLNs1_xhY?si=4gWJmUyYUacOjLoa

Laugh? I thought I'd cry. Why do comedy and depression go hand in hand? They often do, and Jessica Holmes says that's not necessarily a bad thing. We talk about supportive husbands, surly teenagers, hosting corporate events from home, punching up (and down), Celine Dion, joining and leaving the Mormon Church, and just what the hell is normal anyway? Jessica Holmes is a Canadian actress, comedian and speaker. Best know for her time on the Royal Canadian Air Farce, Jessica has also performed Just For Laughs and The Second City. Her impersonations are legendary, and include Celine, Liza, Britney, and, for some reason, Belinda Stronach. Like millions of Canadian, Jessica has struggled both with post-partum depression and, as she puts it, “regular, run-of-the-mill, garden-variety depression”. Her inspiring book Depression The Comedy: A Tale of Perseverance delves into her personal journey with validation and warmth. She continues to advocate for mental health and helping people take simple, sustainable steps towards fulfillment and well-being, one laugh at a time. Arnold Pinnock welcomes viewers to step back in time 100 years with The Porter. The historical drama premieres Monday, February 21 on CBC and CBC Gem (and later this year on BET).Based on true events, this is a little-known slice of Canadian history. This tale of Black porters working out of Montreal in the 1920s and battling to form their own union is a passion project for Pinnock. He learned about it several years ago while working on another project near Montreal's Little Burgundy neighbourhood. That area of predominantly Black settlement was home to pianist Oscar Peterson, whose father was a porter.Pinnock teamed with Bruce Ramsay and Sienna Films to bring these stories to life. They pulled together a wonderful cast, which includes Ami Ameen, Ronnie Rowe Jr., Mouna Traore and Alfre Woodard, among others.  Vintage trains stationed in Winnipeg, where production was based, add a great deal of authenticity to the narrative.Pinnock himself has a history worth celebrating. Canada's first Black member of the Second City improv troupe, his comedy resume includes credits on The Royal Canadian Air Farce and Baroness von Sketch Show. In series work, Pinnock has appeared on Life with Derek, Combat Hospital, The Listener, Travelers, Cardinal and Hudson & Rex. In movies, he has starred opposite Chris Rock and Liam Neeson. All aboard the Pinnock podcast express, the best way to arrive at The Porter.

The dean of Canadian sports broadcasting, Brian Williams, looks back at his 50-year career after announcing his retirement from CTV Sports and TSN. Among the highlights: 35 years coast-to-coast on radio with Don Cherry on "Grapeline" -- and not one controversy! Williams, 75, hosted Olympic Games broadcasts for both CBC and CTV. His first game as a reporter, covering weightlifting, was in Montreal in 1976. His last as host, London in 2012. Vancouver 2010 was the pinnacle, says Williams, as Canada owned the podium with 14 Gold medals. It's also where he met up with that other Brian Williams, the NBC news anchor, also just retired in order to add to the confusion. The Winnipeg native also distinguished himself for his coverage of all sports: Formula1 and horse racing, the CFL, Major League Baseball and hockey, everything but comptitive tiddlywinks. He saw them all from Jackie Stewart to Ron Lancaster to Ben Johnson, and worked with some of the greats, sharing stories about Dick Beddoes, Jim "Shakey" Hunt,  Don Chevrier and Bill Stephenson. We also talk about those "It's 8 am in Helsinki, 2:30 in Newfoundland," sign-ons he used to give every Games, and how he misses getting ribbed about that from the late Roger Abbott of the Royal Canadian Air Farce.

As "Kiddo the Clown," Trevor Evans was the biggest star on TV when I was five. His daily series (1962-65) was produced in what was then the brand new CFTO studios in Agincourt right off the 401 in Toronto. It was the kind of bizarre local kiddie show that would one day inspire the likes of Pee-wee's Playhouse. Kiddo was the landlord of a zany apartment where laundry came down a shute (onto his head), mice typed notes under the stairs and a general sent his boots down a dumb waiter to be polished. The name of then Prime Minister John Diefenbaker was frequently invoked. The strange way the series ended always haunted me.Evans, who turns 85 in April, went on to be a top TV director. He worked with a Who's Who of Canadian TV talent including Wayne & Shuster and The Royal Canadian Air Farce. He gave future comedy icons John Candy, Dan Aykroyd and Catherine O'Hara their starts before SCTV. He also directed specials for Rich Little, Stiller & Meara, Carol Burnett and Robert Kline as well as his hero, Red Skelton. He even once worked with Buster Keaton!Evans is a one-man TV time capsule. The sound quality is less than stellar, recorded over the phone, but lean in and you'll hear stories you will never forget.

Starting on CBC radio back in 1973, the original cast of Luba Goy, Dave Broadfoot, John Morgan, Roger Abbott, and Don Ferguson delivered a mix of sharp satire and silliness, eventually moving to tv where they (and new Farce members) stayed until finally signing off with a 2019 NYE special. Jessica Holmes has opened for comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Leslie Nielsen, and Ellen DeGeneres, as well as hosted events for such visionaries as Deepak Chopra, Tony Robbins, and Oprah Winfrey! Although a comedian at heart, having performed with the Second City and Just for Laughs, Holmes has recently delved into writing: penning the book I Love Your Laugh: Finding the Light in My Screwball Life. Born and raised in Ottawa en Anglais et Francais, Holmes sat back and enjoyed the hilarity that was her family: a handful of older brothers, a mormon father and a feminist mother. Not a sitcom, just her family. The Second City, Just for Laughs and TV shows like Little Big Kid and The Itch got her noticed as a funny, quirky presence in the comedy community. After her comedy special Holmes Alone taped, she was offered her own sketch series: The Holmes Show. A Carol Burnett style series with lots of characters & impressions, Holmes became known for her oddball personifications of Celine Dion, Liza Minelli and Geri Halliwell. Holmes was delighted to join the cast of Royal Canadian Air Farce (having applied to be their secretary five years earlier, and been turned down…they still have her typing test!). There she played politicians and celebrities; including Michael Jackson and Jessica Simpson. During her years on Air Farce, Jessica had two children, Alexa and Jordan, with her actor husband Scott. Holmes wrote her first book, I Love Your Laugh: Finding the Light in my Screwball Life, in 2010. Having fallen in love with public speaking, Holmes decided to deepen the scope of her material by becoming a Life & Career Coach through San Diego’s Life Purpose Institute. She now enjoys a mix of comedy & motivational speaking.   *** For Show Notes, Key Points, Contact Info, Resources Mentioned, & More on this episode please visit our website: RockBottom2RockinIt.com. *** Feedback? A Fine Time for Healing
Professional Comedian Jessica Holmes Talks About Her Struggle With Depression

A Fine Time for Healing

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 6, 2019 44:00

Today's special guest, celebrated comedian and author, Jessica Holmes, has always applied humor as healing balm for life's scrapes and bruises. Since childhood, Holmes has kept a "funny journal," recording bizarre moments that remind her life is, most often, more comedy than tragedy. Holmes shot to stardom on her own Carol Burnett style sketch series The Holmes Show and then Royal Canadian Air Farce then started booking high profile gigs such as opening for Jerry Seinfeld and Ellen DeGeneres. From the outside it seemed like Holmes had it all. But on the inside, she was suffering in silence: after recovering from post partum depression years earlier, Holmes entered a familiar slump. When she wasn't glued to her couch surrounded by junk food, she was avoiding her agent and yawning through gigs, even when emceeing for one of her idols, Oprah Winfrey. Her book Depression The Comedy describes how Holmes eventually came to terms with depression: "the cold sore of the mind." Writing with self deprecating insight and emotional vibrancy, she speaks candidly about her condition, musing on everything from sex and marriage counseling to the bittersweet reactions of her kids to the funny (and scary) side effects of medication. After battling both post partum depression and regular, run of the mill garden variety depression (her words), Holmes became a Life and Career Coach, and now tours regularly on motivational speaking circuits in addition to her work as an in demand comedian. She has performed wellness keynotes for such companies as 3M, Allergan, Carstar, Deloitte, Genworth, Atlific Hotels, and Habitat for Humanity. In the spring of 2018 she became an ambassador for the #BellLetsTalk campaign for mental health, and started a comedic online photo campaign to help others feel less isolated.

Finally she was diagnosed with depression. But as any good comedian knows everything has the potential to become material so Holmes took her mental health and made it the topic of her self-deprecating, candid, and emotional and funny new book Depression the Comedy: A Tale of Perseverance (Page Two Books, April 28, 2019).Holmes talks about her postpartum depression and her second depression some years later, when she "became less of a June Cleaver and more of a David-Hasselhoff-when-his-daughter-videotaped-him-lying-facedown-on-the-bathroom-floor-unsuccessfully-trying-to-eat-a-hamburger."Recalling her frustration when "NBDs" ("Never Been Depressed") would ask, "Well, why don’t you just get out there and do something?" Holmes points out that "one of the most prevalent symptoms of depression is not feeling like doing anything, ever.""It’s an illness," she reminds us. "I’ve never met someone with Type 2 diabetes and thought: ‘See, I’ve always just eaten bags of delicious sugar and been fine, so I’m not sure why you can’t figure it out."www.jessicaholmes.com

Firecracker Department with Naomi Snieckus

Hey firecrackers! I’m coming at you from Toronto this week where we’re in the middle of the Toronto International Film Festival. This time of year is always crazy and exhausting but most definitely exciting! My highlight so far this year was being a part of a charity event for Rainbow Camp with Colin Mochrie, Deb McGrath, and their daughter, Kinley. Rainbow Camp is a one-week camp for LGBTQ2+ and their families, its a safe place for them to go, be a part of this community, and most importantly, have fun! Man, what an amazing event to be a part of. I’m going to post a link below to their website, please check them out, donate if you can, help spread the word, and get inspired by the incredible things this organization is doing! Okay, so next we have Emma Hunter as our guest and I freaking love this woman. Her and I have been on ‘Mr. D’ together for a while now, but you also may know her from ‘The Beaverton’, ‘Royal Canadian Air Farce’, or even ‘Spun Out’. You also need to check out her video from ‘Just For Laughs’, which I’ve posted below! We talked about pretty much everything, but those topics include her family, what’s happening in her world, and so much more. Enjoy this one firecrackers and get inspired!

This is NOT a Safe Space

On this episode, I chat with Alan Park of Conspiracy Queries and Royal Canadian Air Farce. We discuss several conspiracy theories, their validity, and whether or not people should take everything at face value, or ask a few more questions.
