Series of short comedy scenes or vignettes
POPULARITY
In this episode, Danny, is joined by Jim Tavare, comedian, musician, actor and director, famous for his stand-up featuring his double bass, which has made him the recipient of some of the most legendary heckles in the history of the British comedy circuit. He was one of Prince Charles's favourite comedians and is well known for co-creating and starring in the BAFTA award-winning The Sketch Show. A certain demographic, however, remember him best as Tom, the Leaky Cauldron´s hunchback barman in Harry Potter. His IMDb profile describes him as looking like "a mad scientist escaped experiment." Jim has some great stories to share, including how he found comedic inspiration during an accident that literally nearly killed him, which is fascinating. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS During an accident that nearly killed him, Jim had an out-of-body experience during which comedic inspiration struck. Jim used comedy to help him heal emotionally and mentally. He adapted physical aspects of his act so that his long-term injuries did not stop him from performing. He started his career working in a theatre via a YTS scheme, then the Enterprise allowance. Adding his double bass to his act got laughs for jokes that had previously fallen flat. Most of the time, Jim used his double bass as a prop instead of playing it. Americans respond to a different type of humour and still love the British accent. Prince Charles booked Jim to perform in front of 14 crowned heads of Europe and the UK royal family. Their unique lifestyle meant Jim had to cut some jokes because they couldn´t relate to the experiences. Comedy goes in cycles, and at times the circuit becomes saturated. BEST MOMENTS “I'd always regarded myself as relatively handsome by European standards, until I got cast as the hunchback in Harry Potter.” “People are now growing avocado trees in London.” “I just couldn’t believe the characters I was meeting and making a living while I was doing it .” “The accent helps.” “Whilst I have Jewish heritage, I can´t really say I'm Jewish.” “I owe my career to that Tony Blair government kind of atmosphere.” “ I have scar tissue on the lungs, so breathing is sometimes an issue. “ ABOUT JIM TAVARÉ http://www.jimtavare.org https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0851663 HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Having worked with some of the most difficult people in the UK, he is a natural storyteller and entertainer, whilst purveying the most fascinating information that you didn't know you didn't know. A writer and host of pub quizzes across London, he has travelled extensively and speaks several languages. He has been a consultant for exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum and Natural History Museum in London as well as presenting accelerated learning seminars across the UK. With a wide range of knowledge ranging from motor mechanics to opera to breeding carnivorous plants, he believes learning is the most effective when it's fun. Uniquely delivered, this is history without the boring bits, told the way only Danny Hurst can. SUMMARY In this month's episode of The SpokenWeb Podcast, ShortCuts is taking over the airwaves. ShortCuts is the monthly minisode that takes you on a deep dive into archival sound through a short ‘cut' of audio. In this fifth season, ShortCuts producer Katherine McLeod has been presenting a series of live conversations recorded at the 2023 SpokenWeb Symposium – and in this full episode, we're rolling out the last of those recordings. You'll hear from Moynan King, Erica Isomura and Rémy Bocquillon. You'll also hear the voices of our then-supervising producer Kate Moffatt and our then-sound designer Miranda Eastwood, who was there behind-the-scenes recording the audio and who joins in the conversations too. Listening is at the heart of each conversation, and each conversation ends with the question: What are you listening to now? That ends up being quite an eclectic playlist and do check the Show Notes below for links. If you like what you hear, check out the rest of Season Five of ShortCuts for conversations with Jennifer Waits, Brian Fauteaux, and XiaoXuan Huang. Send us a Text Message.Gopher is a monkey smuggler. There, I said it. This episode also dabbles in nose jobs, and Don Adams, the voice of Inspector Gadget and star of the classic TV series Get Smart. As is the case with most sitcoms, TV shows, and even movies from the 1970s, chimpanzees will invariably show up and create some kind of hilarity or havoc, and sometimes both. This happens a lot in this episode. There is also a storyline where two old vaudeville-type performers have a reunion that turns explosive and another plot where a woman boards the boat with a bandaged face and her mom tagging along. Doc makes his moves on the mom very quickly.Next, Isacc has a hell of a problem with his mom "living in sin" with a dude as they vacation on The Pacific Princess. His mom is played by the famous old-time actress, singer, and comedian Pearl Baily. We also trip upon the topic of British comedy and Caleb tells of an old show where a mentally challenged character always wants to ... oh never mind, it's actually kind of sick. SHOW QUOTES: "Mummy, bitty bitty, mummy bitty."— Producer Caleb "Was this girl's nose job scheduled before the cruise, or did her mom just take her? Is this like a spa retreat for the nose job? Is she supposed to be hidden? Is my question kind of the chicken or egg? I'm just confused. Then there's the monkey."— Charlotte"I've got to question the safety of keeping a chimpanzee under your bed."— Rob This one covers Love Boat season 1, episode 14.Visit LoveBoatExposed.com to dive deeper, and connect with the show; send us a message or record a voicemail for air. A brief summary of the rather popular skit Hans and Franz (on the sketch show Saturday Night Live) on our Arnold Schwarzenegger themed week occurs followed by a summary of the must-listen audio drama by Conan O'Brien and Robert Smiegel (SNL, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) occurs. Did the unmade movie still work rather well as an audio drama or is the whole premise still too ambitious even by '90s movie standards? Would you had seen it had it been made? All that and more highlights of the witty Dana Carvey & Kevin Nealon led sketches! The AV Club put out their list of "The 30 Best Sketch Shows of All Time" and BOY did they ever make a few mistakes (SNL is number 13?! Really AV Club?!). The gang discusses sketch shows, which one is the best ever, and Jay makes a strong case that everyone should be watching I Think You Should Leave.PLUS: The gang talks about how the WGA strike might be affected by the fact that there is SO MUCH TV to watch right now. Jay takes a walk down memory lane (did you have a subscription to TV Guide and examine it like the Talmud every Fall?), Rhea does British Corner, and Angelo and Jay's daughter both agree that Judd Nelsons' nostrils are TOO BIG (trust us, it makes sense in context). It's another ACTION PACKED episode and you're not gonna want to miss it!(You can check out the YouTube channel Jay mentioned in this episode by clicking HERE: warning, there's a LOT of amazing old TV here and it might keep you occupied for many months!)

Taran Killam (SNL, Killing Gunther) joins us this week to share his opinion on attention and rejection as an actor with a unique perspective of having been cast in two iconic sketch shows: Mad TV and SNL. Love the honesty in this episode… Taran shares some pretty uncomfortable moments with heroes like Jack Black and Dave Grohl, while also being open about how he rekindled his relationship with his now wife, Cobie Smulders. We also talk about his audition for Pete in Smallville, who made him crack the most on both Mad TV and SNL, and what it was like to work with Arnold Schwarzenegger on his self directed film. Among the first crop of winners at this year's Juno Awards was Jon Dore, who won the Comedy Album of the Year Juno for A Person Who is Gingerbread, the veteran Canadian comic's debut comedy album from Howl & Roar Records (headed by his sister, Allison Dore). The Ottawa native has had a long career working on both sides of the border, first becoming a household name as a correspondent for 3 seasons of CTV's Canadian Idol before hosting The Jon Dore Television Show on the Comedy Network for 2 seasons. Jon was the first stand-up comic to appear on TBS' Conan when it debuted on November 11, 2010 (his first of many appearances on the late night show), and he hosted multiple seasons of HBO Canada's Funny as Hell, an alternative comedy showcase shot each year during Just for Laughs in Montreal. He's appeared multiple times on the Comedy Central sketch shows Inside Amy Schumer and The Kroll Show, as well as CBC's Baroness von Sketch Show, and in 2021 created and starred in CBC's Humour Resources, shot during the early days of the pandemic. (You can -- and should -- watch all the episodes now on CBC Gem.) Leading up to this year's Junos, Andrew Lizotte got the chance to chat with Jon from his home in Juneau, Alaska about how his album got more personal than his previous material, growing up with a funny sister, the process of filming Humour Resources, what it's like living in Alaska, and work-life balance before and after having a baby. Arnold Pinnock welcomes viewers to step back in time 100 years with The Porter. The historical drama premieres Monday, February 21 on CBC and CBC Gem (and later this year on BET).Based on true events, this is a little-known slice of Canadian history. This tale of Black porters working out of Montreal in the 1920s and battling to form their own union is a passion project for Pinnock. He learned about it several years ago while working on another project near Montreal's Little Burgundy neighbourhood. That area of predominantly Black settlement was home to pianist Oscar Peterson, whose father was a porter.Pinnock teamed with Bruce Ramsay and Sienna Films to bring these stories to life. They pulled together a wonderful cast, which includes Ami Ameen, Ronnie Rowe Jr., Mouna Traore and Alfre Woodard, among others. Vintage trains stationed in Winnipeg, where production was based, add a great deal of authenticity to the narrative.Pinnock himself has a history worth celebrating. Canada's first Black member of the Second City improv troupe, his comedy resume includes credits on The Royal Canadian Air Farce and Baroness von Sketch Show. In series work, Pinnock has appeared on Life with Derek, Combat Hospital, The Listener, Travelers, Cardinal and Hudson & Rex. In movies, he has starred opposite Chris Rock and Liam Neeson. All aboard the Pinnock podcast express, the best way to arrive at The Porter.
Comedy writer and actor Patrick Rowland quit his job at Target to work his dream job as a writer for "The Amber Ruffin Show." Patrick's story should be taught to creative people everywhere as an object lesson in doing all the things "they" tell you to do: work hard, be kind, and be patient. It actually worked for him! Other highlights: He and I agree being immortal would NOT get boring! Patrick genuinely loves improv! And—hard left turn here—he tells me about being shot at 17 and how it changed him, in many ways. Please rate and subscribe to our podcast if you haven't already! In Episode 46, we talk about Constance Wu's very public negative reaction to her ABC show “Fresh Off the Boat” being renewed for a sixth season and discuss the trend of naming children after characters from TV shows (especially before you know whether that character is ultimately good or bad). In the Marquee Topic, we look into the state of NBC's “Saturday Night Live,” one of the longest running programs on TV. We talk about whether or not the show is still funny, what they could do to improve it, the current standout performers and if the host of the show makes any difference from week to week.
