On this week's episode of Masters of MAX, Tom speaks with Tessa Clarke, Co-Founder & CEO of Olio. Founded in 2015, Olio is a sharing app for local communities, making it easy to give away the things you don't need to someone else who would value them. Since inception, Olio has now grown to over 7M users, with nearly 100,000 volunteers and more than 28M local neighborhood pickups. In the conversation, Tom is able to explore what inspired Tessa to start Olio in the first place, and the way it connects back to her early upbringing. Tessa also gives an inside look on how she and her early team built the first version of this product as simply a WhatsApp Group in order to test their idea. You will hear just how fast Olio took off, where they are at now in 2023, and what Tessa has planned for the future. One of the biggest lessons to keep an ear out for is the impact that Olio's community has had on growing a loyal user base and why this can sometimes be a double-edged sword. Hear Tessa give her advice on building your own community, and why it might not be for every brand. —Guest BioTessa is Co-Founder & CEO of Olio, an app tackling the climate crisis by solving the problem of waste in the home & local community. The bigger the network, the stronger the network effects. Join an insightful episode of Conquer New Markets as Levent is joined by Saasha Celestial-One, the chief operating officer and co-founder of OLIO. Together they discuss international growth, creating supply and demand in new markets and why it's important to start a mission-driven business. KEY TAKEAWAYS To launch into new markets you have to have very strong organic activity. Select test markets and a hypothesis to launch into them by generating some demand. To grow internationally you need to get the supply and to get the supply you need to identify the demand. Next, you need to get in the press, form partnerships, get the volunteers, get the local business partners and get everything in one place. The talent acquisition market right now for most companies is hard but we've found, people really want to work for a company that has an authentic purpose, authentic mission and that does something meaningful. New entrepreneurs should always look to start a business they're passionate about and is mission-driven. The bigger the network, the stronger the network effects. If we have a large and engaged user base, there are lots of different ways to commercialise. It's really important if you want to scale and you're going to need capital to scale as a social enterprise that your social and your commercial. BEST MOMENTS “To grow you have to be incredibly lean and incredibly resourceful.” “Nearly 10 million people in this country struggle to feed themselves on a daily basis and a lot of them have smartphones and a roof over their head, but that doesn't mean that they have a food budget or household budget.” “It's amazing for a social enterprise to grow internationally because you're developing a good cause.” “We had to have faith that the demand would come.” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://olioex.com/ CONTACT METHOD Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leventyildizgoren/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/yildizgoren IG: https://www.instagram.com/levent.yildizgoren/ ABOUT THE HOST Levent Yildizgoren, the author of 'Good Business in any Language', is an award-winning entrepreneur, localisation professional and a PRINCE2 qualified project manager. Freelance Feels: The podcast for humans who work for themselves
To mark the week of the COP26 conference, I spoke to Tessa Clarke, founder of food sharing app OLIO. We talk about running a company with sustainability in mind, how much food we waste, sharing household items and the remote working world. There's so much to think about, from the food we chuck away to the things we buy such as fancy dress or seasonal 'tat'... Tessa says: The ‘lightbulb' moment came on 17th December 2014 – I remember it well. I was packing up our apartment in Switzerland, getting ready to move back to the UK. Despite our best efforts to eat everything we had, we were still left with 6 sweet potatoes, a whole white cabbage and some pots of yogurt. The removal men told me that all the food had to be thrown away, but I just couldn't bring myself to do this. And so – much to their frustration as we still had a lot to pack up – I got my new-born baby and toddler dressed and set off armed with this food to find someone to give it to. Unfortunately, the lady who I had hoped to give it to wasn't in her usual spot outside the supermarket and I got quite upset. I thought about knocking on my neighbours' doors to see if they wanted it, but the problem was I didn't know if they would be in; and even if they were in, I didn't really know them and it might be a bit awkward if they didn't want what I was offering. Feeling thoroughly defeated I thought to myself – “This is absolutely crazy…. this food is delicious. Why isn't there an app where I can share it with someone nearby who wants it?” And so the idea for OLIO was born… I told some friends & family about my idea of a food sharing app, and they all thought I was crazy. But in February 2015 when I told Saasha, her eyes immediately lit up and we just knew that we had to work together to bring this app to life! Find out more at olioex.com Follow on Instagram @olio.app

UK households still waste 4.5m tonnes of food a year that could be eaten, in fact the majority (71%) of edible food waste in the UK happens in the home. To succeed in reducing food waste, the public need to be engaged and motivated to reduce their own waste. Could encouraging behavioural change and providing access to pioneering apps like Olio be essential tools to create this social movement?Joining host Stefan Gates are David Hall, Founder & Executive Director, Behaviour Change, and Tessa Clarke, Co-founder & CEO, Olio to share their viewpoints on what needs to happen for consumers to reduce the amount of food they waste.About our panelDavid Hall, Founder & Executive Director, Behaviour ChangeDuring a thirteen-year career in advertising, David created a series of step-changing campaigns; his multi award-winning strategy for Skoda helped transform perceptions of a car that had long been the butt of jokes. Saasha Celestial-One may sound like a band formed in the swinging sixties, but she’s actually one half of a food waste startup looking to sign up 1 billion users to food sharing app, Olio, by 2025. Born and raised by hippy parents in Iowa, Saasha cut her teeth upcycling and tackling food waste from a very early age. Having grown up with not very much, she set her mind on building a bulletproof CV and worked hard to de-risk her professional career - she admits she was really seeking financial security and career stability. But having worked at Morgan Stanley, McKinley and American Express, she knew her heart wasn’t in financial services and consulting. And it was whilst on maternity leave when she took redundancy, realising she was financially secure, did she finally turn her hand to something she was truly passionate about. Her first foray into entrepreneurship was the hugely successful My Creche, London's first PAYG provider offering flexible childcare for busy parents. But that was nothing in comparison to the behemoth challenge she is tackling by way of Olio. Join us today whilst we talk with Saasha about her journey from Midwest America to tackling food waste, one sweet potato and leftover cabbage at a time. We talk with Saasha about: Olio, what it means, and how it’s tackling the problem of food waste How redundancy changed her life Why a leftover sweet potato and a cabbage brought her to her current path How far £40k will go when you start your startup How Olio began with 12 people in a Whatsapp group Olio’s reliance on volunteers to spread the food waste message How you can get involved The best piece of advice she’s ever been given Links: www.olioex.com For more go to secretleaders.com

Reducing food waste, encouraging a shift in mindset and developing a globally successful app with Saasha from Olio. For our final episode of the season, we spoke to Saasha, co-founder of food sharing app, Olio. Along with her co-founder Tessa, Saasha's mission is to help reduce the amount of food that is wasted in households and businesses through encouraging a change of habits. We heard about how they launched the app in their local community, testing the concept and using their findings to develop a resource that is helping people to share their unwanted food items with others. Not only is this helping those in need, but their initiatives are set to make a significant difference to the environmental impact of our collective food waste. Saasha also has some fantastic practical tips which can be easily implemented in our day to day. Olio is such a necessary tool and it was hugely inspirational to hear how they've got it to where it is today and their plans for expansion www.olioex.com

My guest today is Tessa Cook Tessa is the co founder of Olio the free food sharing app. Olio was launched back in February 2015 by Tessa and her co founder Sasha Celestial-One. The two founders met at business school in California. They launched the app just a few months after having the idea and gave themselves a year to make it work agreeing that if it hadn’t taken off by then they would go back to their day jobs. Tessa is a farmer’s daughter and grew up on farm where she learnt the value of food from a very young age and became passionate about food waste. Before launching Olio, Tessa worked in various managing director roles across retail, media and the financial services. The idea for Olio came to her in a moment of inspiration and was a genuine lightbulb moment. One of those moments most people only dream of, where the idea seems so obvious you cant believe it hasn’t been done before. After teaming up with her business partner Saasha, the two wasted very little time and launched the app just 4 months later. Fast forward 2 ½ years and they now have 330,000 people using their app and over 15,000 volunteers helping them with their mission. I think this is a really inspiring listen and you cant fail to learn something from Tessa’s story. She recommend the book, “The Lean StartUp” by Eric Ries which I can recommend too and there are some great podcast recommendations in there for entrepreneurs, including one of my favbourites, “How I Built This” with Guy Raz. I love the Tessa talked of bubble and squeak, which is no where near as popular as it should be, and such a good dish when you are doing a fridge raid but still want something warming and delicious. Her triple choice of sandwiches was right up my street. A chip buttie, a bacon butie and a boiled egg sandwich…it doesn’t get more British than that! I love that Tessa cooked for all the guests at her wedding. Such a lovely thing to do - I wonder if I should attempt that too?? She made a delicious veggie filled lasagne and a really great sounding lime and ginger cheesecake which sounded easy and delicious: a winning combination. I think it is Nigella Lawson’s mother who celebrated a second Christmas on Midsummer’s Eve and I think it’s the most lovely idea and one that I might actually adopt too. How fun would that be? Tessa seemed enamoured with the idea anyway as her final desert island dish was an easy one for her to make as she loves a traditional Christmas lunch. Very apt for this time of year, and we didn’t even plan that. What wasn’t quite so traditional was Tessa’s way of having Christmas pudding. She has it with brandy butter. So far, so traditional. Then she adds golden syrup which is unusual but I can definitely get on board with. Then! She tops that with a generous drizzle of white sauce. A white sauce made with butter and flour and milk….very unusual! I loved her idea of freezing the smoothies into lollies for the children (and for the adults) and adding greek yoghurt to the smoothies is a great shout. I am being honest when I say I don’t think I’ve met a bad smoothie which does make them rather fun to make as you know you can bung things in, use up left overs and it will taste great!
