If we find ourselves off track in life, how can we ground ourselves and find our flow again? When Josh Groban first stepped on stage as a shy 7th grader assigned a solo by his music teacher, his own mother didn't know he could sing. Fast-forward three decades, and Josh has sold 35 million records worldwide. Josh's rise to fame as a singer, songwriter and actor happened relatively quickly, he says, and along the way, he sometimes lost sight of what he cared about, pursued the wrong things, and experienced loneliness and depression. Through those difficult times, Josh sought therapy and built deeper connections with loved ones and learned to turn to them for support. In this episode, Dr. Murthy and Josh Groban explore the challenges of navigating life when it becomes overwhelming, the power of the arts to heal, the importance the arts for young people, and how music has the power to transport us. (07:09) Did Josh ever imagine his music could bring healing for people? (09:30) Why are teachers so important for young artists? (08:18) How Josh dealt with self-doubt (23:01) What helped ground Josh as his fame grew? (27:03) How does Josh know when he's chasing the right things? (33:34) How does Josh find the balance between hustle and flow? (40:32) The isolation of fame (49:43) The courage to work with a therapist (55:30) The power behind Josh's song “River” (01:04) What do the arts do for our mental health & well-being? (01:07:36) How is Josh Groban supporting the arts for young people? (01:10:12) Why does Dr. Murthy feel so connected to Josh Groban? (01:13:36) Why should we pursue experiencing the arts in our lives? (01:17:02) Where has Dr. Murthy turned for inspiration or solace in music? (01:18:47) Can we create more access to the arts for young people and turn STEM to STEAM? Bringing fuzzy-felt insights and stories galore, consider Brian the third ghost guiding you through a Christmas classic – talking the history of Disney and the Muppets, terrifying oil-soaked baby-faces, dry-ice mishaps, and the brilliance of Paul Williams' songs. New episode out now! We encounter another jewel-heist-in-London-involving-Muppets film with 2014's Muppets Most Wanted! We discuss the appeal of the Muppets and how the format they're in can really make or break the offbeat humor, and debate whether this movie accomplished that traditional zaniness. We talk about how we love the practical nature of the Muppets, wonder if we may have liked this movie a bit more if a few actors were replaced, and complain about the use of CGI. We also get into the fun cameos and how we recognized almost all of them, and confirm we loved all the songs - even the romantic one. Katy loves synchronized swimming and lists, Carrie does not enjoy a mirror mime gag, Maddy knows Josh Groban, and Mack goes on two separate rants but then does an incredible Doofenshmirtz impression. We also argue about the word of art thieves, think that freely dancing to the Macarena seems fun, yell at Mack twice, and some of us get weirded out by sexy Kermit (aka Constantine). Give it a listen to hear us talk about European employment laws, clown cars, the Tower of London, Labyrinth, and which one of us thought this movie was incredible. Enjoy! TW: Covid references, Russian gulag Show Notes/Corrections: Carrie's “Harvey” note was her noting the cameo of Ross Lynch, the man who played Harvey in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Katy had her details wrong but Thomas Blood did attempt to steal the Crown Jewels in 1671 and almost succeeded. On paper, the introduction of an evil doppelganger for Kermit the Frog sounds like a worthy addition to the Muppet mythos. So why didn't the much-anticipated sequel to 2011's The Muppets connect with audiences? With the characters' popularity seemingly restored, Muppets Most Wanted saw Disney deflate this "viable franchise" soon after its reintroduction. Brandon from the Film Code Podcast joins the final episode of our Muppets mega-series as we investigate how Muppets Most Wanted failed to renew the fan goodwill of its predecessor. We'll discuss all those celebrity cameos (Lady Gaga! Tom Hiddleston!), what Constantine reveals about Kermit's role in the Muppets, and how Disney can reinvigorate the future of the Muppets. Also, we'll reveal which of the eight theatrical Muppet films our guests think is the pinnacle of the characters' big-screen career! Our heist team is getting a bit fuzzier this week as this episode's pit stop is all about Muppets Most Wanted! After talking about the latest Fast X casting news (and wondering if we're in too deep or simply on the pulse of Hollywood), we talk about the two-part Young Rock Season 2 finale (from 13:00 to 34:30) then notice there are extra guys in the room (!) in the 2 Fast 2 Furious Minute (36:10). Then, we head to the Gulag for Michael McGahon's patron pick of Muppets Most Wanted, which is kicking off a Muppets deep dive for Joe and Rachel. We're doing a sequel. We're back by popular demand. Ha, well, we wanted to do some more anyways. Welcome back listener! This week we're continuing our March Month of Madness with Muppets Most Wanted (2014). Calum was kept happy with the inclusion of Celine Dion so Sam's happy rambles about a franchise she has found random, unexplained enthusiasm for are kept relatively unchecked. Is this bad or good, well, listen and you'll find out. This is another one where we do have to hype up the soundtrack. It's really quite good and the world is miserable so you should listen to it and be happy. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/one-of-us-is-board/message
Steve Whitmire is an American puppeteer, who has worked on The Muppets and Sesame Street. Beginning his involvement with the Muppets in 1978. Whitmire inherited the roles of Kermit the Frog and Ernie after Jim Henson's death in 1990; he performed the characters until 2016 and 2014, respectively. As part of the Muppet cast, he has appeared in multiple feature films and television series, performing a variety of characters on The Muppet Show, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock and during such occupations has worked for The Jim Henson Company, Sesame Workshop and The Muppets Studio.Whitmire was the second performer of two signature Muppets—Kermit the Frog and Ernie—after the death of their creator and original performer Jim Henson in 1990. Whitmire was personally asked by Brian Henson and Jane Henson to be Kermit's performer a few weeks after Jim Henson's death. Heather Henson arranged for a Kermit puppet to be sent to Whitmire's residence; however, Whitmire hid the puppet away for weeks before deciding on taking on the role. Following the death of Richard Hunt and the retirement of Jerry Nelson, Whitmire took over the roles of Beaker and Statler, respectively.Muppet characters original to Whitmire include Rizzo The Rat. Lips (the trumpet player from Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem), Foo-Foo (Miss Piggy's dog), Wembley Fraggle and Sprocket the Dog on Fraggle Rock, and Bean Bunny, a character that originated in The Tale Of The Bunny Picnic (1986).Whitmire voiced Link Hogthrob in the Muppet RaceMania and Muppets Party Cruise video games. He also performed Link for the 2011 film, The Muppets. This was the first speaking appearance of the character since the death of Jim Henson, the original performer of Link. He also performed him in Muppets Most Wanted. In 2008, Whitmire took over another of Jim Henson's roles, The Muppet Newsman. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
