Jonathan Browne, Senior Investment Analyst at RiverNorth Capital Management — and Portfolio Manager on five of the firm's municipal bond closed-end fund-of-funds — says that the headwinds that made for big struggles in the muni bond space have shifted to become tailwinds, creating opportunity despite the strong recent rebound among muni bond funds. Browne says that the rising-rate cycle had led to discounts reaching the 12 to 15 percent range — a level previously only reached during financial crises — making munis about as cheap as they had ever been. Now, even after a run of more than 30 percent, muni closed-end funds are at the 70th percentile of cheapness, with "quite a bit of room to run."

How plastic impacts companies, investors, public health and the environment

ESG Insider: A podcast from S&P Global

Ahead of Earth Day on April 22, we're launching a miniseries of the ESG Insider podcast looking at plastic. We'll explore how plastic impacts human health and the environment, how companies and investors are approaching the topic, and what to expect from international plastic treaty negotiations starting April 23. In today's episode, we hear about the health and environmental impacts of plastics from Dr. Philip Landrigan, Director of the Program for Global Public Health and the Common Good at Boston College. He was lead author of a major scientific study the Minderoo-Monaco Commission on Plastics and Human Health published in 2023.  We hear why recycling is only part of the solution to plastic pollution in an interview with Richard Wielechowski, Senior Investment Analyst in the Textiles Programme at Planet Tracker, a nonprofit think tank focused on sustainable finance.  And we hear how plastics are affecting oceans and contributing to climate change from Aarthi Ananthanarayanan, Director of the Climate and Plastics Initiative at Ocean Conservancy, an environmental advocacy group based in Washington, D.C. She calls for a broad rethink of the approach to the plastic challenge.   "We have to see it as an opportunity. We've done a lot of that work in the climate space already, but we haven't included plastics in the conversation yet," Aarthi says. "When we can break our minds out of the idea that we're on this inevitable trajectory with plastics, and instead we're planning for a future where what's good for investors is also good for our climate and our health and our ocean — there's a different range of goals and commitments you make, there's a different type of innovation that you have to be thinking about."   This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global.       Copyright ©2024 by S&P Global       DISCLAIMER       By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that S&P GLOBAL makes no warranty, guarantee, or representation as to the accuracy or sufficiency of the information featured in this Podcast. In this role, he is responsible for the portfolio management, strategy planning, and communication of multi-asset class portfolios for high net worth clients and institutions. Ron has over 18 years of industry experience. Mili Rosen works on the Investment Due Diligence team as a Senior Investment Analyst covering a variety of managers on the firm's OPS/Brinker Capital platforms. Asset class coverage includes domestic and international equities, fixed income, real assets, alternatives, and private equity across various vehicles (i.e., SMAs, ETFs, Mutual Funds, LPs). It never really stops, it's not a ‘set it and forget it' mentality, so [while] performance is very important…just focusing on performance is a very quick way to fail.'” ~ Mili Rosen[35:03] - "I think communication skills are something that are very important. The ability to relate to people, particularly when you are serving clients on the outside [is so important].  Just the ability to find common ground and have a true, meaningful conversation that isn't totally buttoned up…[and] having that ability to…have people lower their guard with you, I think that is a critical aspect as well.” ~ Ron AhluwaliaLinksRon Ahluwalia on LinkedInMili Rosen on LinkedInWill Girton on LinkedInBrinker CapitalConnect with UsMeet Rusty Vanneman, Orion's Chief Investment OfficerCheck Out All of Orion's PodcastsPower Your Growth with OrionDisclosure(s) ~ Orion Portfolio Solutions, LLC, an Orion Company, is a registered investment advisor.
