Recently, a dear friend shared the work of journalist Mike Max and his coverage of George Floyd's murder and the protests, destruction and marches in Minneapolis in the following days. Mike had covered the sports beat for 34 years at the CBS Minneapolis station and chose to use his longstanding relationship with the community to work to calm the hostile environment, spark meaningful conversations and capture the real-time experiences of the grieving community. Today, Mike shares his firsthand experience and what it was like to witness demonstrators’ and police officers’ respect for each other. Our conversation will remove the fog we often feel from politicized reporting and remind us of the good, humanity and of the possibility of us all coming together. SHOW NOTES: Growing up in a small Minnesota town, Mike credits his positive role models in building his fundamental foundation. Be thankful for what you did get to do. As a former college athlete, Mike sees sports as a great meritocracy. In his 34 years in media, Mike insatiable appetite for his work + the process of sharing stories of others. Although Minneapolis had a history of racial tension and Mike expected turmoil after viewing George Floyd’s murder, he didn’t anticipate it growing into a global movement for social change. From covering area high school + professional sports for many years, Mike leaned into his diverse network, especially his Black friends to learn and gain a critical perspective. While reporting on the demonstrators' perspective and their hopes for the demonstrations, Mike – a white man - began to understand the impact police brutality had had on the Black community in Minneapolis. Mike observed humanity and respect as demonstrators and officers began to understand each other after they spent long hours and days together "He's got a family. He's got friends. I've got a family. I've got friends. We just want to go home to the people we love."A quote from one of the demonstrators, sharing what it was like to talk with one of the officers at a demonstration. MIKE MAX'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive by Harvey Mackay. 2. All Selling Aside with Alex Mandossian | "Seeding Through Storytelling is the 'New' Selling!"
Let me tell you about Harvey, a 26-year old who decided to go into the envelope business as a salesman. Keep in mind that envelopes are only used once, so people need to buy them over and over. One day, at 5:30 AM, Harvey was sitting in a car with one of the best salespeople in the company, right outside the manufacturing plant of the biggest envelope manufacturer in all the city. Soon, a delivery truck came out of the stockyard. Harvey and his mentor followed the truck, taking notes on where it stopped. This continued for the better part of the morning, before the truck returned to the factory. They did the same thing the next morning, and the next. Within a week, they had a record of over 100 accounts of the top manufacturing company in the area. Once Harvey had his list, he asked his mentor what to do with it. His mentor told him not to try to steal the business away. Instead, Harvey was to go in and acknowledge who they were already buying envelopes from, acknowledge that he didn’t want to steal the business, and asking permission to be #2. He made this sales pitch to those 100+ accounts that he and his mentor had found in their research through following the truck. Within five years, Harvey had over 100% of the accounts that he had recorded. Wondering how you can earn over 100%? Curious about who Harvey really is? Tune into this episode to find out! You’ll also learn why being #2 makes you stand out, how to make potential clients find you interesting, and much more. In This Episode: [03:08] - Ready to hear an introduction to the three key insights you’ll learn about in today’s episode? Here they are! [04:22] - Alex shares the story of Harvey, an envelope salesman. [07:50] - In a quick break from the story of Harvey, Alex points out that his mentor allowed Harvey to experience the process instead of telling him what to do. [10:06] - We hear about Harvey’s very simple sales pitch, and the power of asking to be #2 instead of #1. [12:46] - Alex confesses who the Harvey in his story really is: Harvey Mackay, international bestseller of books including Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive. [14:06] - We hear some ways that it’s possible to go from #2 to #1 by default, without necessarily involving any further action on your part. [15:15] - Alex asks listeners to consider seeking to be #2 in a sales transaction, and to look for a “yes” for a relationship rather than a transaction. [17:47] - We learn another point about bonding with potential clients or candidates. [19:42] - Harvey eventually ended up owning the envelope company, which he called Mackay. [20:42] - Here’s today’s Alexism: “Caring is the ultimate competitive advantage in starting and maintaining any business today.” [22:09] - Alex shares a quick review of the insights that he has covered over the course of today’s episode. They are looking not just to have a bunch of followers who are going to be lackeys who do what they say, they are looking to empower people.” –Bob Burg In this podcast, Bob shares the many valuable resources he has used to become an internationally acclaimed author, speaker and leader. He describes how he learned that, by shifting from an “I” focus to an “others” focus, he has achieved success in every aspect of his life. “If someone believes their job is to go out there and make the sale, then it’s all about them. If they believe their job is to go out and create the environment where that person willingly buys because they know it is in their best interest to do so, then it is all about the other person. And that’s exactly where the focus should be.” –Bob Burg What You Will Learn: What it means to be a “go-giver” How to adapt others’ wisdom into our lives yet still remain authentically ourselves How consistently providing value to others is not only nice, but financially profitable How to recognize if we are sabotaging our success with an unconscious belief that we are not worthy to receive, only give Resources: Bob Burg's website “The Go-Giver;” “Go-Givers Sell More;” “Endless Referrals;” “The Art of Persuasion;” “It’s Not About You: A Little Story About What Matters Most in Business” and “Adversaries into Allies,” all by Bob Burg “How to Master the Art of Selling” by Tom Hopkins “The E-Myth” by Michael Gerber “The Go-Getter” by Peter Kynd “Becoming A Category of One” and “Be the Best at What Matters Most” by Joe Calloway “EntreLeadership” by Dave Ramsey “Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive” by Harvey Mackay “Give and Take” by Adam Grant “Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz Bio Bob Burg shares information on topics vital to the success of today’s businessperson. Bob regularly addresses audiences ranging in size from 50 to 16,000 — sharing the platform with notables including today’s top thought leaders, broadcast personalities, Olympic athletes and political leaders including a former United States President. Although for years he was best known for his book Endless Referrals, over the past few years it’s his business parable, The Go-Giver (coauthored with John David Mann) that has captured the imagination of his readers. The Go-Giver shot to #6 on The Wall Street Journal’s Business Bestsellers list just three weeks after its release and reached #9 on BusinessWeek. Since its release it has consistently stayed in the top 25 on Business Book Best Seller List. It’s an international bestseller and has been translated into 21 languages. Main Questions Asked: - How many shows do you have? - How did you come up with all the different show ideas? Are some specifically business shows to generate income, and are others passion and hobby? - Talk about becoming a good interviewer, and why you don't do a lot of small talk. - What do you do when a guest is difficult? - Have you ever had a guest ask you to not air their interview because they didn't think it was good? - How do you prepare for your interviews? - Do you write questions, or does it all come up based on what your subject says? - Have you ever had a time when you didn't know what to ask a guest, and what did you do? - What is the funnel that happens from the podcast into your business? Key Lessons Learned: - 25-30% of Jason's guest interviews are reused. - Every tenth episode is a general life success topic. - The best way to learn something is to teach it. - As a member of the media, you can offer guests exposure to your audience. Know Your Audience - As a podcaster, it's important to understand who your customer is. - The audience gives you their time (the most valuable commodity any of us have), and small talk is not beneficial to the listener. - Remember the customer is the listener, not the guest. - It's all about producing great content, building relationships with listeners, and funneling them into the back end for offers. - If you do too many sponsorships, it will turn people off. All sponsorships should be relevant and curated. Act As A Media Outlet - Take the position of a media reporter and a watchdog (not a lap dog). - If a guest glosses over something, sometimes it is important to ensure they answer the question. - If you take the approach of being an investigative reporter, you will deliver a lot more value to the customer (audience). - As a host and outlet, your role is to be a gatekeeper and save the listeners' time. Difficult Guests - If the guest is bad, Jason says he simply won't air the show. - As a media outlet, you get to make the choice on what media you want to air. - It is your choice whether you want to edit it or not air the show at all. - As a guest, it's not your chance to do a commercial but rather to provide high quality editorial content that provides real value to the listener. In doing this, the listener will view you as credible, and they will check you out. Preparing for Interviews - If you are willing to be controversial and disagree, you can still have a great interview. - Podcasts are there to report on things and not just promote. - Hosts will often ask their guest prior to interview, “Are there any questions that are off limits?” Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!
