With the NBA moving closer to holding an "in-season" tournament in their 2023-24 season, Ian Mendes and Sean McIndoe discuss if a similar thing could work for the NHL, and also if a play-in tournament for the playoffs should come back. Next, the Blackhawks have set Marion Hossa's jersey retirement ceremony for November 20th, and if it means Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook aren't far behind. The duo brainstorm for Sean's next piece ranking team's bizarre offseason, and somehow, somewhere, Wilson Phillips gets involved. Have a question for Ian and Sean? NHL Free Agency is set to launch and the boys are back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you make sense of what's to come with an hour of all things Edmonton Oilers. On today's show, we looked at Jack Campbell coming to down, Brett Kulak testing free agency, and a whole lot more.To kick off the Tuesday episode of Oilersnation Radio, we got started with a look at Jack Campbell and how it certainly seems like the Oilers will be signing the former Lead to a fresh contract when the free agency buzzer goes tomorrow morning. With that in mind, we debated whether Campbell is an upgrade over what the Oilers had in Mike Smith and also if this was the best way to spend a healthy chunk of their cap space. From there, we looked at what the Oilers' biggest needs are as they enter free agency and how they should prioritize the money they have available. We also looked at Duncan Keith's tenure with the Oilers now that he's officially retired. Now that we know it was for only one season, how does the Keith trade look now? How would we rate his lone season in Edmonton? Lastly, we wrapped up the free agency preview episode of Oilersnation Radio with a look back at some of our favourite and least favourite free agent signings that have happened over the years. Third, Hawk explodes into a fiery rant about the Blackhawk's trades of Alex DeBrincat to the Owtata Senators and Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadians. Ultimately, we congratulate Blackhawks' beloved fan-favorite defenseman, Duncan Keith, on his retirement after a long and storied career. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ben9314/message
Two emergency episodes of Better Lait Than Never in the same day? Oh yeah, it's happening. When the Oilers traded Zack Kassian to the Coyotes last night, I felt pretty good about the way Ken Holland was able to clear some cap space for the summer given that he has plenty of items on his offseason to-do list. I thought that having those extra $3.2 million dollars would go a long way to achieving some of our goals and re-signing players that needed new contracts, but what I didn't expect was that Duncan Keith would be calling it quits less than 24 hours later. When Pierre LeBrun first broke the story, I was almost in disbelief that we were going to have another $5.5 million in cap space fall in our laps. That's not to say that I hated Duncan Keither or anything — I'm certainly not one of those Oilers fans that refuse to acknowledge the good things he did for us — but I also don't think it's unfair to admit that he's not the player he once was when he signed this deal in the first place. Now that he's done and his Hall of Fame career went from an is to a was, the biggest question I have is about what the Oilers will do next. Who will they get to fill those minutes? Are more trades coming? Which defencemen could fit in the Keith slot for the 2022-23 season? I walk through all this and more in the second bonus episode of Better Lait Than Never. Welcome to another episode of The Oil Stream with Dustin Nielson and Tom Gazzola, presented by Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen! Nielson & Gazzola dive into the Oilers trading Kassian and finding out that Duncan Keith will retire. What's the plan with all of the new cap space. Is it just a matter of time until Jack Campbell is the Oilers new starting goaltender? Will Edmonton save room for Kane or just dive into free agency? The boys also talk about Reid Schaefer and a timeline now for a possible Puljujarvi deal?

It's NHL Draft just wrapped and the boys are back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you make sense of what's happened with an hour of all things Edmonton Oilers. On today's show, we looked at the Zack Kassian trade, Duncan Keith's retirement, Reid Schaefer at #32, and a whole lot more.To kick off the Friday episode of Oilersnation Radio, we got started with a look at the Zack Kassian trade that happened on night one of the NHL Draft and whether or not it was a good move to make. Do we care about the draft picks that two and three years down the road? From there, we looked at Duncan Keith retiring after one year with the Oilers, freeing up $5.5 million in cap space that will be crucial to improving this team moving forward. With Kass and Keith both gone, the Oilers now find themselves with $20+ million in cap space and we looked at how Ken Holland should prioritize this windfall. Should he start with a goalie? Should they look for upgrades on defence? From there, we looked at Reid Schaefer who was selected by the Oilers at 32nd overall and whether it was a solid pick for them to wrap up the first round. Lastly, we closed out this week's podcast with another round of Ask the Idiots and our Hot and Cold performers to wrap up what was a very busy week in the NHL. It's NHL Draft week and the boys are back with a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you get ready with an hour of all things Edmonton Oilers. On today's show, we looked at the Jesse Puljujarvi situation, waiting on Mike Smith and Duncan Keith, draft week predictions, and a whole lot more.Kicking off this week's podcast, we got started with a look ahead at the NHL Draft that's coming up on Thursday and Friday of this week, and what kind of moves the Oilers may make as they navigate the weekend. Could the first-round pick be on the move? Will a roster player get traded? From there, we dove into the Jesse Puljujarvi situation and got everyone's feelings on what could be the end of the road for a former 4th overall pick. Regardless of what happens in this situation, Oilers fans are going to have passionate takes regardless of what happens and it will be fascinating to see how these rumours actually play out. Sticking with the rumour mill, we also looked at the potential for Claude Giroux coming to Edmonton after a couple of insiders stated that there could be a fit between the Oilers and the former Flyers captain. Even if the Giroux rumours don't come to fruition, the Oilers are being linked to plenty of moves and players these days and that could make for a spicy couple of weeks around here and I am incredibly excited to see how it all plays out. Your work week is 60% of the way through and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never to help power you through to the weekend.Kicking off this week's podcast, I got started with a look at the Good Life after I asked a question on Twitter that had me in stitches. For my money, this had to be the most fun I've had while recording Better Lait Than Never because the answers you fine folks chipped in with on my question of the day had me dying from laughter. Not knowing what to expect, I asked all of you what is the go-to snack that you make for yourselves that other people think is weird and the responses were absolutely fantastic and beyond anything I ever expected. From there, I covered the latest Oilers news and rumors, specifically what's happening in net after some insiders were speculating this past week on the future of Mike Smith and whether or not he'll be back between the pipes in Edmonton next year. I mean, the guy is 40 years old at this point and you'd have to think that getting ready for an NHL season would be tough on the ol' body. Sticking with the Oilers, I also looked at the absurdity that is the NHL CBA after Bill Daly announced today that there would be no recapture penalty for Chicago if Duncan Keith decides to retire with one year left on his deal. Lastly, I wrapped up the episode with another round of voicemails to get your take on what's been going on over the last few days in your life. It's Tuesday afternoon and that means we've got a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you get through the middle part of your week with an hour of all things Edmonton Oilers. On today's show, we looked at some of the names that are circling the rumour mill, the question marks around Smith and Keith, and a whole lot more.Kicking off this week's podcast, we got started with a look at the Zack Kassian buyout question and whether or not it would make sense for the Oilers to buy him out if a trade becomes impossible. It's not that Kass isn't an NHL player but with a $3.25 million cap hit, his name keeps coming up as one that needs to get cleared out if the Oilers are going to find some additional cap space. Would there be anyone that would be willing to trade for Kassian? Does it have to be a buyout? From there, we looked at the Mike Smith retirement situation after Elliotte Friedman speculated that the 40-year-old may be a candidate to put on LTIR rather than a full-on retirement. Sticking with potential retirements, we also looked at the speculation that the NHL is going to potentially change its cap recapture penalties in the event that Duncan Keith retires as the Blackhawks would then face a penalty if he hung up his skates before the full term expired. Not sure why the league would treat its own CBA as a suggestion more than a binding document but that's where we're at these days, I suppose. Lastly, we wrapped up the Tuesday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots to get the boys' takes on the questions you've submitted since our last podcast.
