It's Island Musicfest weekend in Courtenay BC, and there are folk festivals coming up in Harrison Hot Springs, Vancouver's Jericho Beach Park, Duncan (Islands Folk Festival), Mission's Fraser River Heritage Park, and over The Rockies in Canmore and Edmonton. Exciting times! Here are some of my expected highlights of these events, plus a good long look at Scots "acid croft" pioneers, Shooglenifty, who play in Vancouver next Thursday before heading to Harrison and Duncan over the weekend
I say a fond farewell to French pop star Françoise Hardy, who died this week at age 80. She was such a beautiful woman and was one of the main cover girls in Europe in the early 1960s. It's also Bloomsday on Sunday, so I've added a couple of Joycean references. Also featured new music from the July issue of Songlines magazine, and there were a load of new releases from all over the world on top of that. I added as many as possible! Also concert previews (Teddy Thompson on Sunday at The Rogue Folk Club, Missy Raines on Monday at the Anza Club, plus festival previews and a few tracks from Shooglenifty, too.) Oh, and a couple of tunes from Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, who performs in Coquitlam today at Scotfest.
Paying respect to Scottish singer Rod Paterson (Easy Club, Ceolbeg, etc.) who passed away this week. He had such a wonderful, rich, deep voice! Lots of new releases from across Canada and beyond, and a few concert previews: Teddy Thompson (in town next Sunday 16th at The Rogue), Missy Raines (Anza Club the following night), Shooglenifty (at The Rogue on July 18th), Molly Tuttle (Hollywood Theatre, August 1st)
Concert and festival previews, new releases, and a celebration of music from all around the world. It's the essence of what I've been presenting on this show for the past 39 years! This weekend there are concerts with Stephen Fearing and Deanna Knight, and next month Teddy Thompson makes his Rogue Folk debut. July sees the return of Scots favourites Shooglenifty on the eve of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Who says Vancouver is "No Fun City"?
Themes of solidarity with Ukraine are woven through this weekend's edition, also new songs from all across Canada and beyond, and the pulsating sounds of Shooglenifty and The Afro Celts. All sorts of musical styles in fact; something for everyone (I hope!)
Dave Bixby, Luar Na Lubre, Mercedes Peón, Shooglenifty, Dengue Dengue Dengue. Escuchar audio

Musician Eliza Carthy was born into an English folk dynasty. The daughter of acclaimed folk singers Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, she joined the family business at a young age as a singer and violinist, playing with her parents as Waterson Carthy and with her mother, her aunt Lal and her cousin Marry as The Waterdaughters. As a solo artist and bandleader, Eliza has explored the roots of folk and expanded the repertoire. Awarded an MBE in 2014, she was twice nominated for the Mercury Prize for album of the year, and in 2021 became the president of the English Folk Dance and Music Society. She tells John Wilson about the first time she attended the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in 1989, aged 13. Standing on the main stage at sunset overlooking the mountains and sea was a defining moment at the start of her career. She also discusses the influence that singer Billy Bragg and Scottish folk rock band Shooglenifty had on her music. Eliza also talks about the impact of the pandemic on the folk music community and the personal loss of her mother. Producer: Edwina Pitman

The real deal. Part one of two. Incredible playing and great chat: the painters of ancient Egypt and the joy of playing in an orchestra; De Danaan, Planxty and Schubert; Martin Carthy and Nic Jones and the thrum of existential rhythm. Truth be told, we don't have much to add to this show - it'll all in the tape. Next week: Shooglenifty and living in Scotland, the moments in a gig that a musician lives for, coming home to Australia and recording an album with Andy Irvine. In this episode Luke plays: Three jigs (un-named) Three reels: McGreevey's, The Sweetheart and Miss McGuiness and Wrackabello (from the playing of Martin Carthy) To listen, stream or download simply click a link below: Our website: https://blarneypilgrims.fireside.fm iTunes: https://apple.co/2A6tUPm Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/3cPTkis Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3eIwBFy Or alternatively, simply search your favourite podcast app for the Blarney Pilgrims. It was a fun week here in Georgia. Last weekend Lupa and I headed for the hills. We went for a long and tough walk into Tallulah Gorge. This is the wild and beautiful place where they shot the movie Deliverance. We rewarded ourselves after the trek with a visit to Mama G's restaurant in Clayton Georgia. It was a lovely meal and we were treated like stars by our busy but attentive waiter Challen. So if you ever find yourself in the hills of North Georgia you could do a lot worse than visit this wonderful restaurant. Of course there are a lot more great things to see up that way including the amazing gorge itself, the falls and the lovely little town that sits on the edge of the Gorge. On this week's show we have lots of music from Scotland including tunes from Tony McManus, Dougie Mcclean and Shooglenifty. Also there is music from Frank Tovey and Little Feat. So enjoy the show and tell all your friends.
For the 2007 to 2008 season we featured 12 tours: Brebach, Optical Identity, Shooglenifty and Tanya Tagaq Gillis, Roddy Hart and Leeroy Stagger, Fraser Fifield Band with Nedyalko Nedyalkov Quartet, Eska Mtungwazi Band, Reinventing The Reel, Aye, An Affirmation of Martyn Bennett, Club Tromolo, Burnsong and Differences in Demolitions.

Since then they have collaborated onstage and on record, at The Salmon Arm Blues and Roots Festival, and during Celtic Connections 2007, where Tanya and the band stunned a capacity audience at the Old Fruitmarket. As well as recording two television shows, one for the BBC and the other for Mac TV, Tanya also features on Shooglenifty's latest CD Troots.
