How did Britain cease to be global? In Untied Kingdom: A Global History of the End of Britain (Cambridge University Press, 2023), Professor Stuart Ward tells the panoramic history of the end of Britain, tracing the ways in which Britishness has been imagined, experienced, disputed and ultimately discarded across the globe since the end of the Second World War. From Indian independence, West Indian immigration and African decolonization to the Suez. Crisis and the Falklands War, he uncovers the demise of Britishness as a global civic idea and its impact on communities across the globe. He also shows the consequences of this diminished 'global reach' in Britain itself, from the Troubles in Northern Ireland to resurgent Englishness and the startling success of separatist political agendas in Scotland and Wales. Untied Kingdom puts the contemporary travails of the Union for the first time in their full global perspective as part of the much larger story of the progressive rollback of Britain's imaginative frontiers. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Filmmaker-writer-activist Marlon Riggs challenged popular — even progressive — culture when his video documentary depicting Black gay men with their “Tongues Untied” was banned by television stations across the U.S. (interviewed by Joey Flyer and Mike Alcolay). Lakhiyia means “home,” and Lakhiyia's work in revolutionary creativity offers an opportunity for listeners to bring out their own “sermons you wish you'd heard,” like “Duckwalk to Freedom” — and you can participate @lakhiyia on Instagram, HOMEplxce.com and thiswayout.org! (interviewed by Lucia Chappelle). And in NewsWrap: Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declares 2025 “The Year of the Family” that doesn't include queers, more U.S.-based trans-national companies are obeying in advance to restrict or totally abandon workplace diversity programs, the Boards of Apple and Costco are bucking the anti-DEI trend, U.S. federal protections from bias in education based on sexual orientation or gender identity are struck down by a federal court in Kentucky, a bill that denies federal funding to schools that allow transgender students to compete in girls' and women's sports was passed by the U.S. House, and more international LGBTQ+ news reported this week by Sarah Montague and Marcos Najera (produced by Brian DeShazor). It's Spring in the Church, though it is Winter in the World. Jesus the King is coming again into the darkness of our hearts, Church, and nation. We prepare our hearts, casting off the desires of the flesh. We examine ourselves and long for Him wrapped up in the simple means: His forgiveness, baptism, Supper, and Word.Jesus looses/unties us from our Old Master, the Devil, over and over as we prepare for the Lord's Return. He does this through His Means of Grace: Word and Sacrament.Jeremiah 23:5-8; Romans 13:11-14.Advent 1. He highlights the power of trust, affection, and mutual respect, sharing insights from the book "The Boys in the Boat" about a rowing team's journey to Olympic gold.Join Dick Foth as he delves into the significance of staying united, both as individuals and as a nation, and challenges us to consider our role in keeping the dream of unity alive.
Is the era of the “humanitarian cowboy” over? This week, Devex contributor Lauren Evans wrote a piece analyzing what's become of this common aid worker stereotype — often a charismatic, risk-taking white male who moves from one disaster or conflict zone to the next — and whether, in the era of localization, there's still room for them in the humanitarian space. As part of Devex Pro week — a week of in-depth analyses and conversations for our Pro members — Devex Business Editor David Ainsworth is looking into the concept of “tied aid,” and the extent to which countries still principally fund their own NGOs. While some countries, like the United Kingdom, have made tied aid illegal, in many cases there are rules and regulations that continue to make it prohibitively difficult for global south organizations to access funding directly. The Netherlands has a new far-right minister for foreign trade and development cooperation, Reinette Klever, who is charged with overseeing aid cuts worth billions of euros in the next few years. Many worry this is part of a growing trend among global north countries as right-wing parties and rhetoric make their way into mainstream politics. Tune into the latest episode of our weekly podcast to hear David Ainsworth along with Devex President and Editor-in-Chief Raj Kumar and Nasra Ismail, U.S enterprise executive director at Alight, discuss these stories and more.

In today's episode, I'm keeping it real, like your business bestie. Remember, no matter how you're leveling up or juggling your business, don't overlook contracts. Whether you're dealing with new clients, hiring, or partnering up, contracts are your safety net when lawyers step in. Taking contracts lightly can lead to messy situations, what I call "untied knots." From day one, make sure to dot those I's and cross those T's in your business. And when things get rocky and lawyers enter the picture, trust your instincts – they're usually spot on! 0:02:22 - What happened 0:03:25 - Advice 0:05:23 - Agreements are important 0:07:01 - Make sure of things 0:07:53 - Summary FREE Speed Networking Event: https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/the-ultimate-speed-networking-event-for-online-business-owners-nov-2023-tickets-717229632137?aff=oddtdtcreator Let's stay connected through these links: Email us your questions: info@sandscreative.ca Our website: http://www.sandscreative.ca Podcast Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/sickandsuccessful_ Our business Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/s.and.s.creative Natalie's personal Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/for.the.success

UNTIED KNOTS, 5min., Cambodia, Romance Directed by Claire Yland Li A girl who constantly fantasizes about sexual intimacy and romantic encounter doesn't know what to do when the opportunity actually comes. Get to know the filmmaker: This story starts as a story about summer and youth; two girls who are bored and decide to run away together, but when their parents call, they go home willingly. But then, as I was re-writing the script, I wanted to write something about loneliness and a need to connect. I've been a bit of a nihilistic and believe that nothing other than the connections you made matters in the end.
