Ian Rankin is on a deadline to complete his next Inspector Rebus thriller. He is happy with the first draft: “at the moment, it is perfect!”. But what will others make of it? In the second of two episodes recorded across Scotland over several months, we follow the bestselling crime writer to the remote, coastal town of Cromarty. He comes here to escape reality, and to write without distraction. But on this occasion, there is a crime fiction festival taking place. Will he get any work done?
Meet Hugh Miller: the man regarded as the David Attenborough of his day. Though often overlooked in the history books, this self-taught geologist helped to popularise natural history to his Victorian audience. What did he help to discover about prehistoric Scotland? How were his scientific findings viewed by his peers? And why has he not remained better known? Joining Jackie Bird this week is James Ryan, visitor services assistant at Hugh Miller's Birthplace Cottage and Museum in Cromarty. To enjoy more episodes of Love Scotland, please follow or subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. For more on Hugh Miller's Birthplace Cottage and Museum, click here.

While on our trip to Cromarty we managed to visit three different graveyards. The most famous being The Pirates Graveyard. Nicknamed so because of the large amount of gravestones carved with Skull and Crossbones. Although we where informed by a local that the graveyard was used to bury those who had died with the plague and there were even some accused witches there aswell. So right up my alley! Waves on Cromarty beach reimagined by Cities and Memory. The natural rhythm of the waves on the beach informed the backbone of this composition, with a Badalamenti-inspired delayed acoustic guitar picking out a pulse to match the repetitive beauty of the waves. The guitar line is joined by other, more effected versions as the pieces goes on, the heavier effects representing the waves finally breaking on shore as they move into the land. The piece is underscored by some effected cello and woodwind lines, which occupy the lower end and represent the low-end sound of the rigs from the original recording - really, it's a re-painting of the original recording through music.
"The waves at Cromarty beach, Scotland recorded in the summer of 2020. The faint hum of work on the retired oil rigs in the Firth can be heard." Recorded by Jessa Davies.
When we began this project, Matt was hoping and planning to move to Cromarty, in the Far North of Scotland, with his family. The world in 2020 threw up a few obstacles, but he has made it.For this Christmas special, Pete and Matt discuss what it’s like to actually pull off what so many people dream about, and what is becoming a more realistic option for many given increased remote working. Does it feel remote in some way? Is it for everyone? Does Matt miss anything or … anyone? The answers appear to be mostly no.

On the hill above Alness on the North shore of the Cromarty firth, a row of apparently ancient towers and arches frames and incredible view out over the water. But what are they doing there, who built them, and why? The answers take Matt on an unexpected wikipedia tour of India and British colonial history, the Scottish aristocracy, and even, possibly due to some mis-clicks, the American war of independence. It’s incredible what you come across when out for a walk in the Far North. Patrick Baker knows that more than most. He’s the author of two books about discovering the unexpectedly interesting stories behind the places he has explored in Scotland: The Cairngorms, a Secret History and The Unremembered Places. He talks to us about the joy in finding out more about the things you stumble across, the importance of following your curiosity, and gives us a shortcut to some of the things he’s discovered while exploring in the Far North.

At the end of the road across the Black Isle, not very far north of Inverness, at the mouth of the firth, sits the town of Cromarty. It’s a small community with a big tourist draw, overlooking the natural beauty of mountains and water. It also sits at an interesting point of crossover between the city, only forty minutes drive away, agriculture on the Black Isle and beyond, and heavy industry hosted in the firth and in the energy park across the water from the town. From the beaches in Cromarty, you can see dolphins, oil rigs, and wind turbines under construction. It’s a heady mix, and has drawn tourists, new residents, artists, and writers. We dig into the history and present of Cromarty. What is the context of this place, and what is it like to live there now? As Matt prepared to find out first hand, we spoke to Ingrid Rochford, who has lived there for much of her life, and now runs Ingrid’s House, a Scandinavian design shop in the centre of the town. You can catch up with Ingrid on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. She has just launched her Christmas range, which is worth a look online no matter where you are.

It's two days until polling and we kick off with trying to work our way through yesterday's big stories around gaffes, punches, and gaming the media. However we move on to go behind the headlines and question if this focus is obscuring the real issues, and if the resulting loss of public trust in the BBC and other institutions is fuelling the apparent drift towards the Tories in England. Lesley was up in Cromarty where she spoke with Jon Snow of Channel 4. The London media seem to think that the next big story is Scottish independence. But Lesley asks what if the Tories win on Thursday, where can we go if Westminster says no to indyref2? Some surprising voices, including us, are saying that non violent civil disobedience would be justified. We've championed Emma Barnett of the BBC but did she "jump the shark" on the BBC QT under 30s debate with her "nationalised sausages", and last minute "7% deficit" questions to Angela Rayner and Humza Yousaf? Nicola Sturgeon has continually been grilled on the Scottish government's record during the campaign.Boris Johnson has tried to paint himself as an outsider hamstrung by a "Remoaner" Parliament. Lesley wonders who he'll blame if/when he wins on Thursday with an entirely Brexiteer set of Tory MPs. I chip in on how can this new, reactionary Conservative Party, keep its northern English, working class base onside.
In this episode we return to Trillium, Oregon to visit our fictional hero and the “James Bond” of the public sector, Ben Cromarty. As true fan-boys of author Scott Lazenby, we were enthralled to partake in a new bureaucratic adventure. However, as Ben began slipping in and out of statutory loopholes without hesitation or remorse, aligning himself with questionable nonprofits, throwing basic principles of competitive procurement to the wind, and hobnobbing with venture capitalists, we found ourselves questioning our loyalty and devotion. Is Ben a double-agent fixated on watching his state government burn? Did Ben sell us all out for a few craft beers and a couple hipster friends? Are the feds Ben’s next target? Can a humble EPA agent named Walter Peck save us by shutting this whole mess down? Dear bearcats, you only live twice: once when you are born and once when you stare true bureaucracy in the face. Let the intergovernmental mayhem commence! Sorry for the lack of episodes…. It has been a cruel summer in bearcat country.
