Greetings everybody! We are delighted to be back with another talented guest! We have with us Wesley Slade, a recent graduate of the Bachelors of Interaction Design program at Sheridan. He is well known amongst the IXD community for his tutoring and mentorship works. With a background in animation and art, he has discovered his passion for design and has strong intentions to design for the public good. He started attending hackathons in January 2019 when he was in his 3rd year of college. He has since participated in over nine hackathons and has been placed twice. In this podcast, he shares his experiences with hackathons, the importance of communication and work ethics that he has gained over the years. 0:08 - Intro 0:38 - Wesley introduces himself 1:40 - What's your background? 2:55 - About tutoring/mentoring and the differences between the two 5:36 - Communicating with hackathon teammates 6:50 - More examples of a "hackathon gone wrong" 9:34 - For someone who doesn't want to speak up in a situation, what should they do? 12:43 - Teaming up with friends versus strangers 13:40 - Have you teamed up with a stranger you've previously met at a Hackathon multiple times? 14:51 - Does personality matter? 16:29 - Have you done remote hacks? 17:55 - A bit about our current full-on digital situation 24:57 - Wesley's take on the latter issue (full-on digital situation) 26:07 - More altering circumstances with full-on digital situations 27:03 - Another point from Wesley about the current circumstances 29:12 - What do you think will happen after COVID-19(possible vaccine)? 30:38 - Where you can find Wesley Wesley on LinkedIn Wesley's portfolio Wesley's thesis - Millions motivations to learn Wesley talks about his educational past in animation and art fundamentals and how it led him to pursue his design passion. He started tutoring in his 2nd year in the IXD program and claims he immediately loved helping people. The joy on their faces when they understood a concept or a problem being solved kindled his interest in doing more. Tutoring and mentoring are two different things, and Wesley explains the significance of each of the methods. His final year thesis revolved around the concept of self-directed learning and created a website that helps people analyze their learning styles. He also shared key insights into the final thesis. Wesley participated in his first hackathon with three other classmates in the MacMaster designathon in 2019 and won first place. He understood the importance of communication in hackathons and insists that we try our best to communicate in any way possible. Wesley finds it essential to communicate pre-hackathon to set out goals and ground rules when participating with new group mates. He also shared an ice breaker game with us, which has helped him know more about his group mates and build rapport. Communication is critical, and Wesley emphasizes participating in workshops and activities during hackathons to improve the learning outcomes. Even though there are plenty of difficulties attached to working online, he thinks there will be a more personal connection with co-workers once we return to normal. Along with this, Wesley shared an announcement that later in winter, he will be launching a set of tutorials about web development to learn wireframes, design and code. All the necessary links will be available in the description. To hear about this and many other awesome things regarding hackathons, job/internship opportunities, networking, mentorships, and so much more, take a listen!

We have an extremely exciting show today with CEO of the Desert Angels, Joann MacMaster.   Joann has served as a startup founder, mentor, investor, and educator. She’s passionate about regional ecosystem development and recently received the Larry Hecker and Sherry Hoskinson Lasting Community Builder Award and this year the 2020 Women of Influence Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The key lessons from this conversation are:Diversity in entrepreneurship is critical because the people and cultures of customer-bases are very different, so the problem-solvers must also be very different in order to understand the challenges people face around the world.Diversity goes far beyond gender and skin color. There is a diversity of backgrounds, skillsets, thought, age, geographic location, experiences, etc.  So don't just think that diversity and inclusion mean women and people of color. It's much deeper than that.It is unfair to bucket all minority groups into the same category. Women in tech have unique needs and interests different from women of color. Is there an overlap? Sure. But to bucket, all women into the same category for programs and resources misses the mark. The same goes for all other under-represented groups.   Get specific about who is under-represented and develop a strategy to engage them.As a founder, be sure not to think about Desert Angels as a single entity - many different individual investors and affiliates.  Go engage, and learn about the members individually to move your startup forward more rapidly.Good luck and see you next week!Shoutouts and MentionsAngel capital associationUArizona Tech-launch-ArizonaUaVentures Mike Sember Bluestone VenturesDiamond VenturesCommunity Investment Corporation

The FBI might come for you next. If the Michael Flynn case has taught as anything, it's that our Federal law enforcement agencies are totally politicized and used as cudgels against those who offend the deep state and the beneficiaries thereof. Some have speculated that Obama holdovers had it out for Flynn from the beginning because of his stint in the Office of National Intelligence during the previous administration, but what if it's more sinister than that? John Bolton ended up with Flynn's job (after MacMaster was let go). As we now know, Bolton was critical to the entire impeachment hoax. Did they pillory Flynn knowing that his eventual successor would help them impeach Trump? And what about the threats against Flynn's son? Were they going after him for LEGITIMATE reasons, or were they going after him for his interest in Pizzagate? And then also... What about the fact that the same FBI playbook was used against Trump supporters with far less influence? For example: Roger Stone, and even Christopher Cantwell. The similarities between the FBI's treatment of Cantwell and the FBI's treatment of Flynn and Stone are actually uncanny. I'm going to discuss this in-depth and also get into some petrodollar coverage to give you guys a reprieve from the wall-to-wall Wu Flu news. This is EPISODE 427 of So to Speak w/ Jared Howe!

In that time, he drove agency growth by deepening the client offering as well as creating success pathways for clients that increased the agency's overall value. After joining Realm, Eric took over Strategic Planning for business-to-business clients like Novelis, SunTrust, the Georgia Ports Authority and others. Over the past decade, he had been deeply immersed in business-to-business marketing working in channels like logistics, finance, manufacturing and professional services. Before moving to Atlanta, Eric had spent the first 10 years of his career with Erin/Edwards, New York. Under his leadership, the agency brought clients like 1-800-Flowers, Merck & Co., Olsten Health Services and others to the web for the first time. At the end of that time, he was serving as Vice President of Interactive. The next six years in New York were spent converting Long Island’s largest ad firm, Harrison Leifer DiMarco, into an integrated agency. Once again serving as Vice President of Interactive, Eric also carried a second role as Vice President of Operations. Over time, he developed a new suite of services and delivery methods for clients like Fougera, Novartis and Eon Labs, among others. Today, Eric is a hired gun consultant to clients and agencies alike, helping them refine or develop their marketing strategies. His role is narrow and impactful. He is able to bring a unique set of skills, on an as-needed basis, that most agencies need only occasionally, decreasing their overhead and increasing their bench strength. Eric currently serves on the board of that Atlanta chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators, as VP of Professional Recognition. In his spare time, he is an avid gardener and occasional beer brewer. We discussed what 902 Hip Hop is and what she does, who they represent and why an artist might want to work with someone like her. She talked about artist residencies for hip hop artists and how she’s connecting her artists with Atlanta’s hip hop scene. She shared experiences with government grant funding in Nova Scotia and some key things that an artist should consider when pursuing a career in music.
