Welcome to “Punky Reggae Party” a special audio documentary series of the Ska Boom podcast that focuses on the historical origins and impact of reggae on popular music that will explore the phenomenon of punk and post-punk bands adopting the sounds of reggaeThough drum and bass rhythms drive the various eras of ska, rocksteady, reggae, 2-Tone, dancehall and beyond, drums and drummers have defined each distinct phase.  And like the divide in rock music that occurred in the mid 70's when synthesizers and drum machines began to make their way into pop and post-punk music, reggae also had a similar moment when the very first drum machine arrived on the island in the mid-70's and slowly became dominant during the early 80's with the advent of the Sleng Teng riddim that was driven by a Casio keyboard drum pre-set. In this episode I'm going dig into the history of drum machines and how they changed the course of reggae music. Mixpak FM 048 comes from London grime producer, Slew Dem Crew member and boss of Ghost House Records, Spooky. Around since the dawn of grime, he's been holding down pirate radio shows for over a decade now and producing some super heavy, innovative and often playful tracks for labels like No Hats No Hoods and Oil Gang. You can still catch him doing his radio show on Deja Vu FM which, if you're lucky and he's covering for someone, can run for 6 hours. Though the conversation about the influences and cross-sections of dancehall & grime is not new - see the still excellent Grime in the Dancehall podcast for a thorough run-down and discussion - Spooky is certainly keeping the link alive, well and deep, giving us a constant reminder of UK soundsystem lineage. In amongst his many releases and remixes, you'll find samples and hat-tips that run from Bob Marley and Barrington Levy right through to 90s classics and contemporary dancehall. So for his Mixpak FM, we asked him to pull from his collection of reggae and dancehall-inspired grime and his (live) mix is something quite special - from his own productions to P Jam's take on Eek A Mouse, Chimpo's grime version of Sleng Teng and even some Luciano thrown in. In a East London hell hole. How & where did you record this mix? Recorded the mix at a mate's studio called Real Vibes based up in Tottenham. How long have you been doing the grime thing? What pushed you into it? Been doing grime before it was even called grime. Plus grime was more or less the music everyone was into at the time and the music was (and still is) exciting. How did the Slew Dem Crew come about - how did you all meet? Slew Dem have been about since the very late 90s.. I only came into it around 2005/06. What's your most memorable Slew Dem set/performance? Performance-wise: me, Chronik, G Man, Merky Ace (Family Tree) and DJ Magic in Prague last year (2012). Radio-wise: me, Esco, Chronik, G Man, Rage & Tempa T on Rinse FM in 2006. So many of your tracks take from reggae/dancehall - what's your relationship with the Jamaican sound? Blame my folks. They're from JA and they were down for playing old time reggae, ska, rocksteady or lovers rock. What influence has dancehall had on you, as a producer or as an individual? I like to revive an old dancehall or reggae track every now and then.... give them a update but not take too much away from the original. And I know everyone can relate to a few of 'em even now! What links do you think there are between grime & dancehall? Probably down to the bass-heavy vibrations. Plus you got the likes of Riko Dan, Killa P, Jamakabi, Badness etc who bring that dancehall element into grime as well. You've been playing some of reggae stuff in your Deja sets recently - what are your favourite reggae/ dancehall records? Not too much though!! Favourites would have to be Elizabethan Reggae (Boris Gardener). Soul Serenade (Byron Lee), Silly Games (Janet Kay), Wide Awake In A Dream (Barry Biggs) and Stealing Love (Carlene Davis). What gets the most wheels in a live Spooky set? Probably "Spartan" from what I remember. What's the best thing about the grime scene now in 2013? There's more professionalism within the scene. Maybe a bit more unity and positivity is needed along with a few more DJs and a few more raves / organizations. What's the difference between now and when you started out? In my opinion.... there are barely any under 18 raves, no-one's really hungry for radio, most pirate radio stations only following what genre of music is hot, most record shops have closed down and the music now really goes hand in hand with the internet. What else have you got coming up this year, release-wise? A double A-side 10" vinyl, a single called "Baby" on Unknown To The Unknown Records, a track called "Moonlight" on the Big Dada 'Grime 2.0' compilation out 5th May and a couple remixes as well as knocking out a few releases on my Ghost House label and the occasional free download.

Wayne "SLENG TENG" Smith is the originator of dancehall first all computerized rhythm.Wayne Smith born in Jamaica, in the community famously known as "Waterhouse" or "Firehouse".The community of Reggae's first Grammy Award winner Black Uhuru evolved. Wayne fell in love with music and have been singing from the tender age of 12 yrs old. He has been recording hit tunes for more over 3 decade, including recording for Channell One Label, King Jammys and his own Sleng Teng label. Hits songs such as Mr Boss Man, "Ain't No Meaning", "Come Along", and the mega worldwide hit "Under Mi Sleng Teng" and many more, has made him in a household name in the music industry. He has been enlisted in the Guinness Book of Record for the orginator of the "Sleng Teng" rhythm.Known to have changed the history of dancehall reggae. Wayne Smith, currently working on his Mega Hit Album, as he brings to you one of his best work yet. Look out for the "Sleng Teng" master. Ras Midas is an internationally established singer, songwriter, performing and recording artist, and composer and producer; he has produced dynamic Reggae music since 1974. At the age of 16, Ras Midas began recording unique and innovative songs for the famous Jamaican producer Harry Johnson at Harry J. Recording Studio, Kingston, Jamaica, with Reggae's finest musicians and vocalists. Ras Midas, a true Rastaman, is an original. Dubbed "The Musical Prophet" in Europe early in his career. Andrew Bees was born Oneil Norman Beckford on May 17,1972  and grew up in the Waterhouse community of Kingston, Jamaica, an area with  a very rich  history in Reggae music.Andrew Bees has been silent for nearly two years now, working on his new CD "Smile On The Earth", but Andrew has finally broken the ice with the release of his new track, the aptly-titled "Thanks and Praise".

Channeika shared the stage with Beenie man, Marcia Griffiths, Cocoa Tea, Luciano.McCollin has shared the stage with Gospel artists such as, Micah Stampley, Andre Crouch, Chevelle Franklyn, Dj Nicholas, Moses, Goddy Goddy, Stitchie, Papa San, Judy Mowatt  10-11pm.THE SUDANESE CHILD,Dynamq was born in JubaSudan,  Dynamq & his family fled the war in Sudan& moved to NairobiKenya. Fred..s talent was obvious as he used to sing any song being played on the radio. At age 12 Fred wrote his first song ..I THOUGHT SHE LOVED ME.., which at age 15 he sang on an amateur festival with school mates, Harvey Campbell, Donald Allison and Junior Harvey. At that time they all attended VauxhallSeniorModernSchool(now Junior Secondary). Fred came from a musical background, his father and eldest brother (his brother is now deceased) were self taught guitarist(s). His brother was lead guitarist in a band called THE RIVALS. The first band that Jackie Mitto played keyboards with. 1967, Fred formed a group called ..THE LYRICS.. along with Delmar ..Snaw.. Campbell and Albert Tomlinson aka ..Beenie Byrd...

Show Notes It’s brings me great pleasure to release this episode which features two riddims that were suggested by my listeners: the Stalag version and the Sleng Teng rhythm. If you have ever been to a reggae dance or concert, you have definitely heard songs on one or both of these legendary riddim tracks which have had a dominating prominence in the dancehall for three decades. I selected this 22 song playlist out of the hundreds of tunes that have been recorded over these versions. History In Jamaica, the Stalag version (or Stalag riddim) is a popular reggae rhythm, which came to prominence in the 1970s. It was originally written and performed as "Stalag 17" (named after the 1953 war film) by Ansell Collins, and released by Winston Riley's Techniques record label in 1973. It was mainly used for dub instrumental versions, often b-sides of records. The rhythm also influenced early hip-hop, and can be discerned on Public Enemy's hit 'Don't Believe the Hype' as well as on Too Short's Blowjob Betty. Sleng Teng is the name given to the first fully computerized riddim in Jamaican music. The riddim, which was created by the collaboration between King Jammy and Wayne Smith, was titled "Under Mi Sleng Teng". Wayne Smith found the computerized sound in Noel Davey's keyboard, and together he and Davey arranged the riddim, slowed it down, matched it to Smith's key, and rehearsed on it with lyrics inspired by Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi" and Yellowman's "Under me fat ting”, before taking it to Jammy's studio in late 1984. The riddim itself is apparently an attempt to recreate Eddie Cochran's 1959 rockabilly song "Somethin' Else." It is a pattern found in the Casio MT-40 home keyboard. After the riddim was brought to the studio and Jammy heard it, he then slowed it further and placed piano and a clap on it. Jammy recorded a number of other artists on the original backing track including Tenor Saw (with "Pumpkin Belly"), and Johnny Osbourne (with "Buddy Bye"). The tunes were first unleashed at a now legendary soundclash between Jammy's own sound system and Black Scorpio at Waltham Park Road on February 23, 1985.
