Reggae legend King Kong, also known as Dennis Thomas, emerged in the early 1980s Jamaican music scene alongside other iconic artists like Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty. His talent was quickly recognized by the legendary producer King Tubby, who brought him on board to record several singles for the Firehouse label, including "Step On Dem Corn," "Aids," and "Babylon."As digital music began to reshape the soundscape in 1985, King Kong collaborated with Anthony Red Rose on the hit song "Two Big Bull Ina One Pen." He later joined forces with producer King Jammy, churning out successive hits like "Legal We Legal," "Trouble Again," and "Mix Up" between 1985 and 1986. King Kong's versatility was further showcased during this period through his work with other labels including Black Scorpio, Bunny Lee, and Prince Jazzbo. In the late 1980s, King Kong's career took him beyond Jamaica to the United States and Canada, where he established his own label, Conscious Music.King Kong continued to make his mark in the late 1980s with a tribute song, "He Was A Friend," dedicated to the late reggae artist Tenor Saw. He then set his sights on new horizons, traveling to London in the early 1990s. There, he collaborated with several prominent figures in the reggae scene, including Mafia & Fluxy, Fashion Records, and Gussie P. He also linked up with the New York-based label Massive B.King Kong's creative spark remained evident in 1990 when he recorded a dubplate, a custom-made reggae record, titled "Call Mr. Madden." While initially unreleased, the song's potential was undeniable. Two years later, producer Bobby Konders decided to share "Call Mr. Madden" with the world, and it became a dancehall hit. Interestingly, the Fugees would later draw inspiration from this title for their smash hit "Fu-Gee-La" released in 1996.Despite these successes, King Kong's reggae career maintained a sporadic presence on the global stage.Reggae Reignited: Later Years and Continued SuccessAfter facing legal troubles in the mid-1990s, King Kong returned to Jamaica and reconnected with producer King Jammy, releasing tracks like "Seize All Guns" and "Break Down The Walls." However, it was the New York label Massive B who truly reignited his artistic fire. Collaborations with them produced inspirational songs like "Jah Is My Best Friend," "Earth Is The Lord," and "I Feel A Joy."King Kong's adventurous spirit then led him to Ethiopia in 2007. This new chapter culminated in the 2012 release of his 10th album, "Ethiopian Dream," a collaboration with the Dutch label King Shiloh. Singles like "Sweet Rub A Dub" and a cover of "Door Peeper" kept the momentum going. In 2017, he dropped an EP titled "In The Old Capital" featuring five tracks and their dub versions, produced by Old Capital Records.King Kong's artistic wellspring continued to flow in 2018 with the release of the acclaimed album "Repatriation" on the Irie Ites Records label. With a career spanning over 35 years and boasting an impressive discography of 12 albums and countless singles, King Kong remains a force to be reckoned with in the reggae world mark the minds of fans of the artist!https://www.irieites.net/https://www.facebook.com/irie.ites/https://soundcloud.com/irie-ites-recordshttps://www.youtube.com/user/IRIEITESMANAJAHhttps://twitter.com/IRIEITESRECORDSWho Needs a Superhero When You Have Whipped Body Butter?Dry, itchy skin? Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. (born October 20, 1971), known professionally as Snoop Dogg, is an American rapper and actor. One of the most iconic figures to emerge from the early-'90s G-funk era, Snoop Dogg evolved beyond his gangsta rap beginnings to become a lovable pop culture fixture with forays into television, movies, football coaching, and wrestling while expanding his musical reach far beyond his primary genre. Introduced through Dr. Dre's Top Five rap hit 'Deep Cover' (1992), Snoop quickly became one of the most famous stars in rap, partially due to his drawled, laconic rhyming, as well as the realistic violence implied in his lyrics. In 2012 Snoop converted to Rastafarianism and officially changed his stage name for the first time in 14 years to Snoop Lion. He released an album and a documentary under this name before changing his name once again only one year later in 2013. Phil and Jake rank bicycles, scatting (aka scat singing), and feeding cats like babies on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We briefly discuss ventriloquism, including mention of Candice Bergen's father Edgar Bergen, who was an actor, comedian and Vaudeville and radio ventriloquist. He was a big star, bigger than it's possible to imagine someone being when his main thing is throwing his voice through a dummy that sits on his lap ON THE RADIO. Even on TV or movies it doesn't really make sense because all the sound comes from the same speaker so throwing his voice doesn't seem that impressive and editing can be done anyways. It just seems like the kind of thing that only would work in live performances but here we are! His show was on the radio for 20 years! Phil rode a bicycle across the USA from Yorktown, VA to Vallejo CA. He's a very private person and doesn't like to talk about it much unless you mention bikes, the USA, Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California or any of the geographical features therein. Jake rode a bike around the island of Losinj, Croatia. Jake refers to wearing a “turtle shell brace” after his bike accident, but it's maybe more commonly called a clamshell brace. Madison Square Garden is the World's Most Famous Arena. It sits on top of Penn Station between 7th and 8th Ave in Manhattan. It's sort of ugly and it replaced the old Penn Station which was an architectural marvel. We mention it because Phil notes that the original MSG was the site of many indoor bicycle races (and was actually on Madison Avenue which made a lot more sense).  Notable scatters discussed include Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith), David Lee Roth, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are Cleveland rappers who were signed and promoted by the late Eazy-E before his death. They were really influential in their sing-songy delivery (which you could hear in Crucial Conflict, Three Six Mafia & Nelly)  and their post Geto Boys "horrorcore" angle (similar to Gravediggaz). Their biggest successes were probably Crossroads, a meditation on death and First of the Month, a celebration of plenty. They once filme a video of their trip to Switzerland which was made to get Phil Collins to agree to let them sample him for their song Home. Here's the Bone Thugs sketch on Saturday Night Live that Jake mentions. MC Skat Cat was an animated cat that would rap in the early 90s. Most famously with Paula Abdul. Phil just listened to "Skat Strut" for the first time and enjoyed the Earth, Wind & Fire sample. “Scatman (ski-ba-bob-ba-dop-bop)” by Scatman John is not to be confused with Scatman Crothers. The Fu-Schnickens were a hip-hop trio that were very difficult to understand but nonetheless quite impressive because they rapped at double (maybe triple?) speed. Chip-Fu in particular was just incredible even if the speed of the words made you dizzy. I follow him on twitter but he just tweets at regular speed, sadly. As a white kid from rural California with zero cultural context, Phil didn't understand that I was hearing a Caribbean thing. Their Ring the Alarm samples the Tenor Saw classic. They're mostly remembered now for making Can We Rock with Shaquille O'Neal. Phil might have taken it too far to say Doo Wop music was scatting. The second half of "Sh-Booom" is a good example of what he was referring to though. “Heebie Jeebies” by Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five is, as of 2021, in the public domain. Phil's thinking we should make this our show's theme song. Both New Orleans and Queens can claim Louis Armstrong. He was from New Orleans but he moved to Corona, Queens (very close to where the Mets play) and lived there from 1943 until his death in 1971.  The Harder They Fall on Netflix features “Broader Than Broadway” by Barrington Levy, which is a fantastic song. We discuss “Panama” by Van Halen. Phil says that the lyrics to this song don't matter at all and they might as well be scatting. Here's that twitter thread of old paintings with people feeding cats like babies. How many shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels are really just actual angels? This week we start off in the Dancehall session with the man who strikes terror in Dancehall, the one and only, the butcher of Dancehall, Cutty Ranks. We throw in classics like Hot This Year, Kimbo King, and Ring The Alarm by the late and great Tenor Saw, who knows how to rock the Dancehall, and this couldn't be a true Dancehall clash without the original Wild Apache, Super Cat. You might need your bulletproof vest for these Dancehall hits! We even throw in some Hip Hop influenced tracks such as Girlstown and so much more. 90's reggae featuring rappers like Method Man. We even get x-rated with some heavy Dancehall tracks by Shabba Ranks. Old School Dancehall and Reggae mixing wouldn't be complete without Buju Banton! Remember this is no Second Class mixing. Big up to Beenie Man fans, Girls Dem Sugar! Old School Reggae setting the Foundation for New School! We take you way back in time, remember Pose Off in those pum pum shorts? Cause Screechie Dan does. We even throw in tracks by General Degree, yes before he dropped General from his name. Remember Terror Fabulous told us, No Retreat, No Surrender! We are definitely blocking Traffic with these hits! Shout out to the Uber and Lyft drivers in NYC. Big up to all of the Spragga Benz fans!

Never mind your half eaten hot dog, welcome to BCB, episode 13 in which we talk: Weird Science with Ania Waluk and Maroje Tabakovic, future communes, mountains vs. the beach, the frightening skeleton of Ocean City (NJ), TM, NY vs Chicago hot dogs, saxophone as the hot dog of the music world, how Subway changed my life. We also discuss songs from Tenor Saw, Five or Six, Tuxedomoon, and Hauster. Not included is Rachelle’s revelation on her theory of Tuxedomoon’s “59 to 1”, here reproduced in précis for posterity: “59 to 1 by Tuxedomoon is about temporality under capitalism. Not Andy Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame; we actually have a fraction of that: 1 second. And how do we express ourselves under capitalism in one second? With the ‘I.’ What is most unique about us, our individuality, is reproduced in a uniform gesture, a tick on the clock. It is also a political gesture, the vote via ‘say I,’ - ‘I.’ And in this way, it is what turns us against one another as enemies or towards one another as allies.” Including music by: Tenor Saw - Original Pumpkin Belly https://youtu.be/jCLQSJE2-x8 Five or Six - Another Reason https://youtu.be/ZV3eaIRewCY Tuxedomoon - 59 to 1 https://youtu.be/ZTWgq9R1JPA Hauster - Ena https://youtu.be/ipYGL3jFXfQ Opening music: Beau Wanzer - Basement Dwellers Produced and Edited by Rachelle Rahme Mixed by Shawn O’Sullivan basecampbeta808@gmail.com

Bulby York talks today about his friends in the business, creating the track 'Freedom' featuring Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths, J Boog, and Lutan Fyah on the Master Blaster Vibe! The sophomore album from this world-renowned producer showcases a who's who of Reggae icons (and a few other surprises) skillfully riding Bulby's select riddims, which range from Reggae and Dancehall to Hip Hop, Afrobeat, and New Age.  The first single, "Lots of Signs," finds superstars Beenie Man and Christopher Martin giving a modern take to the classic cut from dancehall legend Tenor Saw. The second single, "Cherry Oh Baby," features Busy Signal and Trinidadian star Patrice Roberts delivering a lively version of Eric Donaldson's celebrated tune that has been covered by the likes of the Rolling Stones and UB40.

Reggae music has always been a beacon of light for those in the face of darkness.  With many people around the world facing crisis situations, I was inspired to scrap the mix that was lined up for release this week and instead build an episode that could refresh, uplift, and inspire positivity for those who face the hardest of times.  Let this be your soundtrack as you work or study and repeat as necessary for positive energy, healing, inspiration, and success.   The first song in this mix sets the tone and captures the overall theme of Reggae Lover Podcast episode 59 quite well.  On this initial track which was produced by Tony English and Daddy Earl, singer Anthony Malvo shows his diversity.  To follow, other songs simply reminding us to give thanks and to praise God are showcased from artists like Junior Reid, Chronixx, Assassin, Gappy Ranks, Sizzla, Gramps Morgan, and Bushman.   Sanchez sings "Amazing Grace" and tells us not to disrespect the Man with the handle, Tenor Saw asks who is gonna help him praise Jehova and Tony Curtis exclaims that his God is real.  Garnet Silk sings a few prayers as soulfully as only he can, while Beres Hammond poses the questions "Do you pray for the homeless in the street, and for the innocent's blood to stop running?"  Anthony B cries that you should remember to put God above your car and your bling, and the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emmanuel Brown asks God to bless our souls.   To counteract the effects of overwhelming guilty, fearful, and angry emotions that stem from today's mainstream media and entertainment outlets with their shocking sensationalism, hyper-sexualization, and promotion of negativity, Reggae Lover Podcast 59 offers God bless reggae music and a reminder that we have the power to tap into higher levels of consciousness.  Let's give thanks!   Playlist: Anthony Malvo - Give Thanks Sanchez - Never Dis The Man Donna Marie - Bless His Holy Name Tenor Saw - Who's Gonna Help Me Praise Garnet Silk - Bless Me Tony Curtis - My God Is Real Bushman - Fill My Cup Sanchez - Amazing Grace Garnet Silk - Fill Us Up With Your Mercy Chronixx - Beat and A Mic Little Twitch - Devil Send You Come Spragga Benz - Love God and Prosper Junior Reid - Give Thanks Beres Hammond - Do You Pray Garnet Silk - Lord Watch Over Our Shoulders Anthony B - God Above Everything Etana - The Prayer Xodus - Give Thanks Assassin - Give Thanks Sizzla - Thanks and Praise to the Creator Delly Ranx - Jah Jah A Mi Everything Gappy Ranks - Thanks and Praise Garnet Silk - Blessed Be the Almighty Richie Stephens - God Is On My Side Assassin - Only God Knows Gappy Ranks - Lord Have Mercy Bushman - It's So Easy G-Whizz - God A Di Boss Bugle - Prayer Chronixx - Thanks and Praise Chaka Demus - Holy Book  Dennis Brown - God Bless My Soul Gary Minott - Seek God Gramps Morgan - The Almighty APPLE PODCAST: SUBSCRIBE OR LISTEN VIA  ITUNES, https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/reggae-lover/id1126663530?mt=2h GOOGLE PLAY MUSIC: SUBSCRIBE OR LISTEN HERE. https://play.google.com/music/m/Ixihhi6rfw26zi6333hocwv6diq?t=Reggae_LoverSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Why is Sugar Minott considered a dancehall pioneer? Listen to Reggae Lover Podcast 86 to find out. In a live dancehall setting during the 1970s, it was common for artists to perform over pre-recorded instrumentals. Sugar Minott was the first artist to recreate that style inside the studio. He worked with Coxsone Dodd and sang new lyrics over the instrumentals of popular Studio One songs. After leaving Studio One, Minott founded his own record label called the Black Roots. He also founded a sound system called Youth Man Promotions, and later a record label by the same name. His vision was to give young artists an outlet, and a chance to make their name in the music business. Sugar Minott moved to England where he was achieving more success than he was in Jamaica. The lover's rock craze started in the UK and Sugar was one of the major players in that movement. While in England he discovered the group Musical Youth. Back in Jamaica, he's also credited with discovering many young talents. He gave unknown artists the chance to perform live in the Dancehall and record for the first time. It was Sugar Minott who actually recorded Garnet Silk's first song. Other artists associated with the Black Roots and Youthman Promotion movements include Barrington Levy, Little John, Nitty Gritty, Tenor Saw, Junior Reid, Jah Stitch, Ranking Dread and Ranking Joe. Sugar was a very Dynamic, versatile artist with successful records in different styles. Lovers rock, Roots, covers, dancehall style, and original written material. Sugar Minott recorded for his own record labels, and he worked with other top labels and producers. Working with Mikey Dread, George Phang, Sly and Robbie Jammys, Channel One and with the Bullwackies label out of New York City. Sugar Minott recorded over 60 albums and countless singles. He passed away in 2010 to heart disease. To see him on stage I was very impressed. Even in his old age, he was a very energetic performer, acting out scenes, jumping, prancing and dancing across the stage. All with his voice still sounding sweet like sugar. Very comfortable in a dancehall setting, he would ask the band or the selector to play some Studio One, and he could sing for hours - entertaining and thrilling the crowd. I salute the great Sugar Minott. His legacy lives on with his daughter Pashon Minott who is a bonafide recording artist in her own rights. If you enjoy this mix I hope you will add some of the songs to your music collection.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? 36 - Reggae Lover Podcast - Stalag meets Sleng Teng

Reggae Lover

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 1969 36:02

Show Notes It’s brings me great pleasure to release this episode which features two riddims that were suggested by my listeners: the Stalag version and the Sleng Teng rhythm. If you have ever been to a reggae dance or concert, you have definitely heard songs on one or both of these legendary riddim tracks which have had a dominating prominence in the dancehall for three decades. I selected this 22 song playlist out of the hundreds of tunes that have been recorded over these versions. The mix is comprised mostly of the original cuts produced by Winston “Techniques” Riley and Lloyd ‘King Jammy’ James. Please submit playlist suggestions and feedback to ReggaeLoverPodcast@gmail.com. History In Jamaica, the Stalag version (or Stalag riddim) is a popular reggae rhythm, which came to prominence in the 1970s. It was originally written and performed as "Stalag 17" (named after the 1953 war film) by Ansell Collins, and released by Winston Riley's Techniques record label in 1973. It was mainly used for dub instrumental versions, often b-sides of records. The rhythm also influenced early hip-hop, and can be discerned on Public Enemy's hit 'Don't Believe the Hype' as well as on Too Short's Blowjob Betty. Sleng Teng is the name given to the first fully computerized riddim in Jamaican music. The riddim, which was created by the collaboration between King Jammy and Wayne Smith, was titled "Under Mi Sleng Teng". Wayne Smith found the computerized sound in Noel Davey's keyboard, and together he and Davey arranged the riddim, slowed it down, matched it to Smith's key, and rehearsed on it with lyrics inspired by Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi" and Yellowman's "Under me fat ting”, before taking it to Jammy's studio in late 1984. The riddim itself is apparently an attempt to recreate Eddie Cochran's 1959 rockabilly song "Somethin' Else." It is a pattern found in the Casio MT-40 home keyboard. After the riddim was brought to the studio and Jammy heard it, he then slowed it further and placed piano and a clap on it. Jammy recorded a number of other artists on the original backing track including Tenor Saw (with "Pumpkin Belly"), and Johnny Osbourne (with "Buddy Bye"). The tunes were first unleashed at a now legendary soundclash between Jammy's own sound system and Black Scorpio at Waltham Park Road on February 23, 1985. This was a listener requested mix consisting of the biggest tracks from 4 singers: King Kong, Half Pint, Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty. Ray said he thought these artists sound alike and that called for a mix with their hits. King Kong, Nitty Gritty, Half Pint, Tenor Saw Their voices are easily distinguishable to my ear, but I agree that Tenor Saw and Nitty Gritty sang with a very similar and unique style. King Kong ended up copying that style of vocal delivery, but Half Pint carved out his own lane on the way to enormous success in the 1980s and 90s as a reggae crooner. RIP to Nitty Gritty and Tenor Saw whose lives were cut down way too early. This is a dedication to you and every reggae lover.
