We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Annibale over Zoom video.Montego Bay, Jamaica raised vocalist, songwriter and producer Hezron Clarke released his album, M.O.A.M. (Man on a Mission), via Tad's Record (Ernie Ranglin, Tanya Stephens). Recorded in Reggae's birthplace, Kingston Jamaica, M.O.A.M. features some of Jamaica's greatest musicians including Dean Fraser (saxophone), Kirk “Kirkle Dove” Bennett (drums), Donald “Danny Bassie” Dennis (bass), Mitchum Khan (guitar), Carol “Bowie” McLaughlin (keyboards) and Robbie Lyn (keyboards). On a lyrical front, the album embodies feel-good vibes with motivational and inspirational concepts that encourage patience and resilience. With inspiration from classic soul artists such as Luther Vandross, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke, to 90's favorites KC and Jojo and Dave Hollister to iconic Jamaican singers Beres Hammond and Dennis Brown, Hezron has embodied his own classic vocal and musical style while taking notes from some of the greats. Hezron released his debut album The Life I Live(d) on Tad's Record in 2015. His return to the label with M.O.A.M. unites two established Jamaican brands, each committed to proving that quality reggae with the potential for widespread global appeal is still being made in the music's birthplace. Although many younger Jamaican artists embrace trap and hip-hop over indigenous reggae and dancehall, a stark contrast to the proliferation of young American reggae bands, especially in California, Tad's Record founder Tad Dawkins is determined to see Jamaican reggae restored to prominence internationally. It's an objective he firmly believes will be fulfilled with the release of M.O.A.M. We want to hear from you! As an artist, QUARA AHNYA has never limited his outlook, experimenting with different sounds to express himself. That commitment to diversity in music has helped keep him in tune over the years. His music reflects personal and professional maturity. "When I first started music I was a boy with no real-life experience. As I grew into a man I learned more about life and the struggles and happiness that love can bring. By incorporating my life lessons, I used my lyrical ability to create my unique sound. Which brought forth smoother melodies because it's coming from years of gained wisdom," he said. From East Kingston, he started his career as Ras Ikan . His early influences were a mix of lovers rock (Dennis Brown, Beres Hammond, Half Pint, Maxi Priest and Sanchez), and Dancehall (Capelton, Anthony B and Sizzla). Two years ago, he changed his stage name to Quara Ahnya, Hebrew for Call I. His songs, like No One and One For You, shows Quara Ahnya's willingness to appeal to different audiences by recording lovers rock ballads."What I am doing is singing about authentic love which speaks life into people That is roots in itself, bringing forth love and positive vibrations," he said. QUARA AHNYA soon to be released Seven (7) Tracks EP in September 2021 will be produced by Yaadflame Productions, ALKEBU-LAN POWER SOUNDS and Sly & Robbie. Musicians including Sly & Robbie, Franklyn "Bubbler" Waul, Cat Coore, Dean Fraser, Aubrey 'Prince' Manning, Ansel Collins, Keith Francis, Mickey Fletcher, Andrew Bassie, Billy Congo, Bongo Herman and Robbie Lyn.His song 'ONE FOR YOU' was produced by YaadFlame Productions. Did I say new mix before August? I clearly meant *in* August :) Well worth the wait I hope, as there are a dozen great riddims and many amazing tracks to feature. Big up to Alborosie for his new album For The Culture with a ton of great rootsy tracks. The best of the riddims this mix will have to be the Forgive I Jah riddim out of Anotha One Productions, with Naptali and Luciano absolutely killing it. Gottal love that saxaphone instrumental at the end of the riddim, along with Dean Fraser at the end of the mix (get his amazing new album Flat Bridge now!). Love that Sax! Born the ninth of ten children, Hammond grew up listening to his father's collection of American soul and jazz music including Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. He was further influenced by the native musics of ska and rocksteady, in particular Alton Ellis. Hammond began participating in local talent contests from 1972 to 1973,which led to his first recording, of Ellis' "Wanderer". In 1975 he joined the band, Zap Pow, as lead singer, leading to the hit 1978 single, "The System" under the Aquarius Records label. However, he simultaneously sought a solo career, releasing his debut album, Soul Reggae, in 1976. His solo ballads "One Step Ahead" (1976) and Joe Gibbs produced "I'm in Love" (1978), were both hits in Jamaica. He left Zap Pow in 1979 to pursue his solo career, and recorded two more albums Let's Make A Song in 1980 and Red Light 1981. He formed Tuesday's Children, a harmony group that toured but never recorded. Hammond formed his own record label, Harmony Records, in 1985 for the release of his Make a Song album, which had two Jamaican chart-toppers that were influenced by the emerging dancehall style: "Groovy Little Thing" and "What One Dance Can Do".The latter, produced by Willie Lindo, began to break Hammond into the international market. He scored another hit in 1986 with "Settling Down" on his eponymous release. He left his fame in Jamaica for New York City in 1987,after being tied up as thieves ransacked his house during a home invasion. There he recorded the Have a Nice Weekend album and the duet single "How Can We Ease the Pain" with Maxi Priest. Hammond returned briefly to Jamaica to record Putting Up Resistance, which was significantly harder than his typical ballads, produced by Tappa Zukie, which spawned the hits "Putting Up Resistance" and "Strange". He signed with Penthouse Records in 1990 and returned to Jamaica permanently to record the dancehall smash "Tempted to Touch", with producer Donovan Germain. This is perhaps his best known song in the United States and United Kingdom, and set the foundation for the hits "Is This a Sign" and "Respect to You Baby" on the 1992 Love Affair album. Also in 1992, Beres released the single "Fire". The song received critical acclaim within the Reggae music industry and it was an extremely sought after 7" single. Now garnering interest from major studios such as Elektra Records, Hammond recorded five more albums in the 1990s as well as several compilations, establishing himself as one of the top lovers rock artists. His first album of the new millennium was 2001's Music Is Life, which featured an appearance by Wyclef Jean, and contributions from Earl "Chinna" Smith and Flourgon. The album spawned several hits, including "They Gonna Talk", "Rockaway" and "Ain't It Good To Know".The 2004 release Love Has No Boundaries, had guest spots by Buju Banton and Big Youth. He returned to Jamaica to perform at the Opening Ceremony for the Cricket World Cup 2007. He released yet another album in 2008, A Moment in Time, on VP Records, which featured the single "I Feel Good". His 2012 album One Love, One Life topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. In January 2014 it was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2013 he was awarded the Order of Jamaica by the Jamaican government in recognition of his "exceptional and dedicated contribution to the Jamaican music industry". In October 2018, he released his first album for almost six years, Never Ending, which features contributions from musicians including Errol Holt, Mafia & Fluxy, Dean Fraser, and Robbie Lyn. After its first week of release it topped the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart.

Joy Caffrey, Christie Daniels and Wendy Love Edge interview musical powerhouse Rochelle Bradshaw in Episode 19- Family, Community and Music with Rochelle Bradshaw Rochelle Bradshaw is the proud owner of a powerful, unique voice and her mesmerizing renditions will leave the listener breathless…wanting, yearning for more. Rochelle now lives in the USA but she was groomed in Portland, Jamaica. She embraced singing from an early age, and by the time she was thirteen years old, she was already a member of her local church choir, school choir and a local band. Her deep passion for music soon drove Rochelle from her quiet, sheltered life in Port Antonio to the resort town of Ocho Rios where she quickly became a sought-after vocalist for various bands, playing the hotel and club scene in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. From her new base many new opportunities unfolded for Rochelle. Reggae producer Barry O’Hare ( X-Rated Records) quickly recognized her extraordinary gift and enlisted her for recording sessions which led to collaborations with other producers like Bobby Digital ( Digital B) and Dean Fraser and many chart-topping artists such as Sizzla, Anthony B, Duane Stephenson, Tarrus Riley and Luciano. Her vocals are also featured on two Grammy winning albums Burning Spear Calling Rastafariand Damian Marley’s Stony Hill. Rochelle, who comes from a lineage of distinguished musicians, the late Anthony Bradshaw (father) & Devon Bradshaw (uncle), currently performs with Stephen Marley son of legendary Bob Marley and has toured the world over with some of Jamaica’s finest artists Garnet Silk, Luciano, Chaka Demus & Pliers, Joseph Israel & The Original Wailers. Rochelle describes herself as a humble roots daughter, mellow and easy-going. She mostly writes her own lyrics and the themes in her songs are about her own life experiences. She resists putting a particular brand or description to her music except to say it is soulful, hard-hitting and powerful reggae. With her band Rochelle Bradshaw & Hypnotion the sky is the limit and she hopes that years from now, their music will remain impactful and relevant. Thanks for listening! Reggae/dancehall fans find ways to get new music for free (YouTube, mixtapes, sound system audio, email blasts, SoundCloud, etc). They form opinions based on the opinions of others if they have to. They also find reasons to justify why they did not buy the new album(s). Fans of other genres take action by collecting (buying) albums, whether digital or hard copy. Born in Davyton, Manchester Parish, and raised as the seventh of nine children in a strict Adventist family, Luciano began recording in 1992, with his first single "Ebony & Ivory" (on which he was credited as 'Stepper John') on the Aquarius Record label, followed by a split album with DJ Presley (now credited as 'Luciana') for producer Sky High.[1] His first releases as Luciano included the hit single "Give My Love a Try", produced at Castro Brown's New Name Studio, followed by others produced by Brown, Freddie McGregor, Blacka Dread, and Sly and Robbie, including the 1993 no. 1 UK reggae hit "Shake It Up Tonight".[1][2] Luciano performing at the 2016 Palm Beach Jerk and Caribbean Culture Festival. West Palm Beach, Florida. He started working with Philip "Fatis" Burrell, releasing the singles "Chant Out" and "Poor and Simple", with the album Moving Up following in late 1993.[1] In 1994 he cut singles for Musclehead and Louie Culture before returning to work with Burrell for a series of successful singles and the album One Way Ticket, which saw Luicano at the forefront of the "Rasta Renaissance" in dancehall music.[1][3] The renewal of Rastafarian influence into dancehall music in the early 1990s had begun with artists such as Tony Rebel and Garnett Silk. After Silk's death in late 1994, many looked to Luciano to continue consciousness in reggae music. Of Garnett Silk, he stated "Garnett was more like a brother, a father, a tutor, a forerunner. When he moved on I knew the work for me became harder still."[4] The following year brought the smash hit album Where There Is Life for Chris Blackwell's label Island Jamaica. It contained such hits as "It's Me Again Jah" (a no. 1 single in Jamaica), "Who Could It Be", as well as the title track.[1] He recorded a second album for Island Jamaica in 1997 entitled The Messenger (largely compiled from his hit singles), whose title track earned him his enduring nickname.[5] The majority of his recording in the mid-to-late 1990s was for Burrell and the Xterminator label, which by that time included such artists as Sizzla, Mikey General and Firehouse Crew,[3] as well as recordings from Capleton and Cocoa Tea. Along with the work on the two albums for Island Jamaica, the majority of Luciano hits produced by Burrell were featured on 1999's Sweep Over My Soul. Burrell and Luciano parted ways in 1999.[6] By 2001, Luciano had released two live albums as well as two compilation albums alongside Sizzla and Anthony B after the split with Xterminator. That year saw the release of two new albums of material, Great Controversy on Jet Star and A New Day on VP Records. The latter received a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the 2002 Grammy Awards, and was executive produced by longtime saxophonist and touring partner Dean Fraser. The album received additional production from Sly & Robbie and was backed by Fraser and the Firehouse Crew.[7] Fraser continued to produce many of Luciano's albums throughout the decade, including 2008's Jah Is My Navigator. In 2010, he released United States of Africa. While the previous album had focused mostly on God, Africa dealt with global events. Of this, Luciano stated, "We're not just singing about Zion and all those glorious dreams. We're also dealing with issues that affect the people, their very minds."[8] He was awarded the Order of Distinction in the rank of Officer on 15 October 2007, in recognition of his contribution to reggae music.[9] In July 2009, Luciano paid his respects to fellow musician Michael Jackson by releasing a reggae tribute (on Lioni Records) of Jackson's iconic USA for Africa charity song, "We are the World". Luciano's album Zion Awake was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016.[

Tarrus Riley (born Omar Riley, 1979, The Bronx, New York City, United States) is a Jamaican-American reggae singer, the son of Jimmy Riley.[1] Riley is the son of veteran singer Jimmy Riley and nurse Lavern Tatham-Riley.[2] He was born in the Bronx and grew up in South Florida.[3] He began his musical career as a deejay working with Busta Rhymes, taking his birth sign as his stage name at his mother's suggestion (the spelling later changed from Taurus to Tarrus), and recorded his first singles for his father's Love & Promotion label.[2][4] He was guided in his early career by Dean Fraser, who also performs in his band and produces much of Riley's work.[5] Riley has released three albums, Challenges (2004), Parables (2006), and Contagious (2009). Contagious features guest appearances from Damian Marley, Vybz Kartel, Etana, Konshens, Demarco and Duane Stephenson.[6] His commercial breakthrough came in 2006 with the Parables album and the Jamaican number one single "She's Royal".[7] Riley was awarded the Reggae Runnins Caribbean Heritage Award at the 2009 HOT 105 FM Caribbean-American Heritage Awards.[8] He was nominated in the Best Reggae category of the 2009 MOBO Awards.

Many women have made a name for themselves in the male-dominated genre of Reggae music. Here we speak of some current notables and analyze some of the issues that have always existed. There is always a balance of positive and negative and we touch on that in this Reggae Lover episode.Of the several female artists that continue to hold their own, here are some highlights:Etana has produced above average music for at least the past 10 years. She earned a nomination for Best Reggae Album at the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards for her latest project, Reggae Forever. She is the first female nominee in that category since Sister Carol in 1997, and the fourth ever.Spice became the first reggae artist to cross the 1 million followers mark on Instagram. Known for raunchy lyrics, she ventured into social commentary on her single "Black Hypocrisy." The song, which tackles the issue of colorism is on her Billboard chart-topping mixtape entitled "Captured." I hope that Spice tackles more serious issues in the future. She can be a positive influence for young women the way she is controlling the media right now.Queen Ifrica has wowed audiences at festivals like Rebel Salute and Reggae Sumfest for the past several years. Her songs have broached the toughest topics from incest to skin bleaching. She sings out against crime, unhealthy diets, corruption, and other evils. Queen Ifrica is also well-rounded and able to discuss love and sexuality in tasteful ways.Leaders of the new school:Reggae revivalist Jah9 is as refreshing as she is an enigmatic force. She's a yoga practitioner and poet turned reggae performing artist. Her dancehall career was nurtured by RoryStoneLove who produced her debut album. Jah9's lyrics are deep, thought-provoking, and meaningful. Her music is powerful yet diverse. The 17-year-old singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Koffee, emerged as a star in 2018. Her single's, "Burning," and "Raggamuffin," gained local and international attention. Look out for her new hit, "Toast," which looks to be an even bigger smash.Lila Ike is one of the protege's of Grammy-nominated reggae revival leader Protoje. She was a unique style and flair with songs about love and socioeconomic topics.Twenty-one-year-old Yanah is known as "The Tiny Powerhouse." With a hand-full of songs released to date, she has captivated listeners. Her delivery is sultry and passionate.Sevana is another songstress working with Protoje's In.Digg.Nation Collective record label. She stood out on "A Bit Too Shy" and "Sudden Flight" which featured Jesse Royal. Sevana has an amazing sound - one of the sweetest voices to come out of Jamaica in a long time.Naomi Cowan came out with a fun 2018 single called "Paradise Plum." She has an R&B/soul, reggae vibe and is actually the daughter of musician Tommy Cullen and singer Carlene Davis. She spent time in Canada where she went to college and then earned a Masters in digital media. After some time running her parent's businesses, she has turned her focus to a music career. Look out for big things from Naomi!Kristine Alicia's 2nd album "Songs from Zion" debuted in 2017. Produced by RoryStoneLove and featuring Dean Fraser, the 11-track album is classic roots reggae with inspirational messages. Kristine's vocal prowess bolsters the project. Rory's Black Dub label has been grooming many promising female artists. The ever-versatile Keida and potent lyricist Karamanti both represent a strong female presence. Their content centers around themes of unity and consciousness. Karamanti launched her own record label, BlackWuman22 Music.Dancehall artist Dovey Magnum has risen to international fame in the past year. She's by far one of the most powerful female performers in her class and her talent is undeniable. Her spiritual side is expressed in "Prayers Me Use and Win," but her more popular anthems are X-rated. Dovey can definitely affect positive change by injecting conscious messages into her music.Kelissa is the daughter of the lead singers from the foundation group Chakula. She attended University in California where she toured extensively. Kelissa also performed and spent time in Africa gaining notoriety there. She has toured and collaborated with Chronixx in the studio as well.Other artists mentioned:Marcia Griffiths, Nadine Sutherland, Tanya Stephens, Lady Saw (Marion Hall), Lady Ann, Lady G, Sister Nancy, Sister Charmaine, and Shensea. The challenges:There are many other female artists out right whose music is only about sex and sexuality. Their music gets to the forefront in the major media channels more often than not. Selectors and radio disc jockeys have been doing more following than innovating. Their playlists feature the same raunchy songs, with few attempts to introduce more diverse subject matter. It seems quite difficult to get played as a new performer. This only entices young upcoming women to embrace the same age-old cliche - sex sells.Spice, who many refer to as the new Queen of Dancehall signed her record deal in 2009. Since then, her label has failed to release a full-length studio album of her songs. We dissect this issue trying to figure out how this could even happen. With this climate how can new female artists get discovered while avoiding exploitation? How can we achieve more balance on the lineups of shows and concerts? How can radio, dancehall, and mixtape playlists become more diverse? How can reggae music, a genre that once stood as a voice for the voiceless embrace its own women? How can we become less hypocritical as an industry and as a society? In this, the age of the #metoo movement, and "Surviving R. Kelly," it is imperative that we protect and support our women. This discussion may pose more questions than answers, but it spawns a dialogue that needs to be had.Add the names of female artists that should have been highlighted in this piece (tag them in the comments). Do you agree or disagree with the statements we have made? Do you have an answer to the questions posed? Let us know. Thanks for listening, reading, and sharing. This is dedicated to you. #reggaelover  Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Go to https://redcircle.com/brands and sign up.
