My guest for the Season 10-opener is Neil Fraser AKA Mad Professor. This Guyanese-born, British dub producer and engineer makes music that is a reflection of how he sees the world, which is to say, he sees people and places as deeply connected, deeply mixed, and he sees that who we are now carries reverberations of our ancestral roots. Press play to learn more! This episode features my reading of Guyanese poet John Agard's "Pan Recipe" (Oxford Book of Caribbean Verse, ed. Brown & McWatt, 2005), a brief sample of Byron Lee and the Dragonaires' “Jamaica Ska” (Kentone Records label, 1964), and a deep listen to Mad Professor & Jah Shaka's “Beyond the Realms of Dub” (Ariwa Sound Studio, 1982). It is with a heavy heart that I dedicate this episode to Jah Shaka. Rest in Power.
In this episode we welcome Sounds legends Sandy Robertson and Edwin (Savage Pencil) Pouncey into our Hammersmith lair and ask them about their careers and shared fascination with the occult. After describing their routes into writing and their days at Sounds, Sandy and Edwin reflect on the dark history of occult rock from Black Widow to Norway's Black Metal scene, via Jimmy Page, Kenneth Anger and Aleister "the Beast" Crowley. Clips from the late Andy Gill's 1990 audio interview with Liberty/United Artists executive Andrew Lauder give us an opportunity to honour the Hartlepool-born facilitator of musical freakiness and discuss the many acts he signed and/or A&R'd over the course of 50 years, from Hawkwind and the Groundhogs to the Stranglers and the Stone Roses. After saying our goodbyes to reggae sound-system operator Jah Shaka and small-trio jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Mark and Jasper run through their highlights among recent additions to the RBP library, including pieces about Nancy Sinatra (1967), the Eagles (1972) and Kim Deal and Tanya Donnelly (1993)... and a 2011 tribute to hip hop star Dwight "Heavy D" Myers. Many thanks to special guests Edwin Pouncey and Sandy Robertson. Find their books, including Edwin's Savage Pencil Scratchbook and Sandy's Aleister Crowley Scrapbook, in all good bookshops. Please note that we recorded this episode before learning of Mark Stewart's death. Pieces discussed: Mister Aleister Crowley, The Primer: Occult rock, David Bowie: White Lines, Black Magic, Andrew Lauder audio, Sound Systems & Jah Shaka, Ahmad Jamal, April Stevens, The Eagles, Shaun Cassidy, Nancy Sinatra, Kim Deal & Tanya Donnelly and Why Heavy D Matters.
Reggae and Dub tunes from Terri Walker, Jah Shaka (Rest In Peace), MELONYX and Horace Andy. Jazz from Fast3, Born74 & Onj. Deep beats from Totek. A classic from Mr Fingers. After a prolific 2020, Dub Cmd returns in 2021 with his first release of the year. This time he works on the classic anthem Jah Children Cry paying respect to Jah Shaka, who started in the 70s spreading through his sound the Rastafari culture in the UK and still sticks to his vision until today. Dub Cmd's rework is done in a roots steppers style, featuring on the vocals Irie-D (one of the youngest members and backing vocalist of Soul Fire band) from Greece, on her first appearance on our label. It will be available for free download from Bandcamp on the 25th March 2021 CREDITS: Produced and mastered by Dub Cmd / Vocals by Irie-D / Artwork by Xucar Warriors

We discuss 40 years of painting, his childhood in Grenada, the impact of moving to London in 1967 aged 11, his memories of making drawings in London's dub & reggae nightclubs of the late 1970s-80s, his admiration for Jah Shaka's sound system and the drive to create paintings that documented the club scene he cherished. We learn about racially-motivated arrests of the time including Forrester's own unjust arrest as a student followed by the death of Winston Rose a few years later, a friend of Forrester’s who died while under police restraint. Forrester went on to pay tribute to Rose in a number of iconic paintings including 'Three Wicked Men' (1981), now part of Tate museum's collection, and in a recent large-scale public mural for Art on the Underground titled 'Brixton Blue' (2019). Reflective of the contemporary black experience and the racial tensions of the 1980s, the mural straddles Brixton station's entrance and depicts a Brixton street scene with the figures of a truncheon-wielding policeman, a Rastafarian ‘businessman’ holding a portable sound system and a besuited politician. We also hear how curator Matthew Higgs of White Columns, New York and fellow painter Peter Doig & TRAMPS gallery helped shine a spotlight on Forrester's paintings for a new generation.Denzil Forrester's major solo exhibition 'Itchin & Scratchin' runs at Nottingham Contemporary until 3rd May 2020. This remarkable exhibition's wide ranging artworks roam from London to Rome and New York, from Jamaica to Cornwall. Pulsing with music and movement, these nocturnal scenes are by turns intimate and ecstatic, singular records of the Afro-Caribbean experience in Britain. Presented in partnership with Spike Island, Bristol, where it will travel to from 4 July to 6 September 2020. Follow @Nottm_Contemp and @SpikeIsland. Special thanks to @StephenFriedmanGallery's Karon Hepburn, Jonathan Horrocks and Tamsin Huxford. Things moved fast in the music business of 1973. Less than six months after the Wailers released their first international album, Catch A Fire, the Wailers were now moving through the gears with an increasing sense of mission. 'Burnin' is an album full of revolutionary fire and fervour, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a line-up that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom. Henceforth it would be Marley who was very much the man in charge. Listen back to our London event where we were joined by Don Lett’s who was largely responsible for merging punk rock and reggae in London in the late seventies, as he said himself: “The only white people you would see at a Jah Shaka dance in Dalston would be The Sex Pistols, The Clash… my friends.”

Jah Shaka’s legendary dubs, spiritual message and chest-rattling soundsystem symbolise a deep meaning in sound. Coming from Jamaica to London in the late ’50s, his young life was embedded within the black British immigrant experience. Having toured the world with his message of love, tolerance and spirituality, Shaka's 2014 lecture at the Red Bull Music Academy in Tokyo remains a truly special one.Interview by Benji BProduced and engineered by Frank Westerkamp and Denis Hürter

The Ben Sims we know today is renowned worldwide as one of the best techno DJs. Catch him live or on his regular NTS show 'Run It Red' and his trademark techno sets are a dynamic mix of pure intensity and knowledgable groove. Growing up in and around London's rich culturally mixed music scene he has played and partied through hip hop, house and hardcore, so it should be no surprise that he's also got a deep love of roots too. Over to Ben to tell you a little about the mix: "Ahead of my alternative Roots set at Field Maneuvres, I've put together a selection of some of my favourite versions, loosely blended with authentic sound system fx and sirens. Most are from 30+ year old 45's but there's a few LP tracks too plus a couple of dubplate-only cuts that were never officially released. Many were Jah Shaka power plays for years and staples of his sets in the late 80's, early 90's when I first started getting into Roots Reggae properly and going to ‘Dances’. I tend to favour the uncompromising 'Warrior Style' or 'King David Style' that Shaka championed, so this is a session of seriously bass-heavy material that brings back many happy memories for me, but also a selection I think anyone with even a passing interest in Reggae or Black Dance Music in general can appreciate. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. See you at the fest! Ben x" FM002: Ben Sims presents Versions Galore 1. Collins Music Wheelers - Collins Ghost 2. Cole was born in Jamaica in 1945 and nicknamed "Stranger" by his family, as they considered that he didn't resemble any member of his kin. Cole was initially successful as a songwriter, writing "In and out the Window", which was a hit for Eric "Monty" Morris. This success gave him the chance to make his recording debut in 1962, instantly finding success with singles such as "Rough and Tough" and "When You Call My Name" (a duet with Patsy Todd) for producer Arthur "Duke" Reid. Further success with singles for Reid in the mid-1960s, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd (a duet with Ken Boothe on "Worlds Fair"), and Prince Buste, Gladstone Anderson (on "Just Like a River") and Hortense Ellis. In the late 1960s and early 1970s he recorded with several producers, including Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Sonia Pottinger. These included further material with Todd as Stranger & Patsy. In 1971 he emigrated to England, where he toured extensively, and moved on again to Canada in 1973, settling in Toronto. He worked as a machinist in the Tonka Toy factory in Toronto and later opened the first Caribbean record shop in Toronto His first album, "Forward in the Land of Sunshine", was released in 1976, with a handful of further albums released over the next ten years, on his own label. In 2006, Cole released his first album in twenty years, Morning Train, a collaboration with Jah Shaka. Cole is featured in the 2009 documentary Rocksteady: The Roots of Reggae, in which he and other stars of the rocksteady era reunited to record a new album of the same name, released in August 2009. Cole's son, Squiddly, followed him into a music career, working as a drummer for artists including Ziggy Marley , Amy Winehouse, Mutabaruka, and many more. www.crsradio.com ,www.caribbeanradioshow@gmail.com 661-467-2407

Jamaican born, reggae superstar Melodic has started rockin' the sound systems in his hometown of St Thomas, Jamaica. His unique style of blending classic reggae, modern dancehall & hip hop is an essential part of what he represents as an Artist. Melodic began crafting his musical skills, with a 25 cent jukebox at his local Jamaican bar. Then with a small sound system, singing at local store fronts with a microphone on the siderwalk. His rude boy looks, charismatic personality, and original voice are a key part of his commercial appeal, which has spread far beyond the Jamaican yards that raised him. Moving to New York in is teen, melodic quickly gained recognition in the industry by consistently adding his signature spice to the reggae and hip hop music scene. Whether opening up for recognized reggae and hip hop artists such as Mos Def, Dead Prez, Tupac, Scarface, Buju Baton, Tiger, gyptian, Mad Professor, Steve Dreads UK reggae band Hassle was formed in 2002 and in this time have supported such reggae greats as, Jah Shaka, Toots and the Maytals, Alton Ellis, Bob Andy and Pama International playing pubs, theatres, and live festivals all over the UK. Amongst other things, Hassle takes influence from the Reggae sound of the 70s aiming for a more warm, pure and earthy sound and feel that is sometimes lacking in the modern arena, Influences such as Bob Marley, Lee Scratch Perry, and Augustus Pablo have helped inspire this as well as our own backgrounds and culture www.blogtalkradio.com/caribbeanradioshow Call in at 8-11pm 1-661-467-2407
This mix starts out with the Rastaman medley, two 12"s and one 10". Earl Sixteen, Jah Warrior, and Jah Shaka provide this intro then it moves into a riddim section for the rest of the tunes. There are about a dozen riddims, all produced within the last five years, and some new for the time the mix was made, at the beginning of this year. Enjoy the music and feel free to comment.
