"We made something we could dance to." The Chicago juke and footwork pioneer reflects on 40 years of Dance Mania and his longtime collaboration with the late DJ Rashad. Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history in the world of Chicago dance music, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label—which is now celebrating 40 years—in the mid-'90s. He's since split his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside titans of Black American music like the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad. Strong went on to become a member of DJ Rashad's renowned Teklife crew, and he was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes that became a prototype for juke and footwork's evolution. In this Exchange, Strong speaks with RA's Kiana Mickles in New York about how he first became introduced to this world through his cousins, with whom he'd listen to funk and slow jams, Parliament Funkadelic, Farley Jackmaster Funk, James Brown and a variety of hip-hop throughout the '80s. The pieces eventually fell into place, he recounts, when he met the "mysterious kid" DJ Rashad in 1997. Together, they helped shape the music scene in Chicago, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, Strong has been celebrating footwork's past by putting out a series of albums called Da Mind of Traxman on Planet Mu. He's just released his third volume, and his first since 2014, which was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke. Strong took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. The series is notable in part because it's a catalogue of footwork and its Chicago lineage—juke and house—as well as these genres' soul, funk and rock roots. Strong talks to Mickles about what Chicago's music scene was like in the '80s and '90s, why footwork was so rooted in dancing and where the genre is heading in the future. Heaving ourselves into 2025 like a rebuilt BILLY with half its dowels missing, No Tags returns to its usual schedule. We kick off with a journey to the North Circular, where London's biggest club is under investigation following two drug-related deaths and an alleged stabbing. Following the recent revelations about Drumsheds in Jim Waterson's excellent London Centric newsletter, Tom and Chal ask: why is it so hard to have a realistic conversation about safety in clubs?Next we indulge in one of our favourite anorak pastimes – arguing about arbitrary historical groupings of underground records! We contend that 2013 was the best year for album releases so far this century, with DJ Rashad, Oneohtrix Point Never, Sky Ferreira, Kanye West and Dean Blunt among the strong portfolio of evidence. Finally, an announcement! ‘Tis the season for hibernating in front of the TV and racking up those numbers on Letterboxd, and in that spirit we are proud to present – adapted from an original opinion by DJ and friend-of-the-show Finn McCorry – the first ever No Tags film season! Introducing: Big Beat Cinema. Look out for that next week.In the meantime, if you enjoyed this episode of No Tags, please do rate, review and subscribe on your podcast app of choice, as it does really help. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs £5 a month and helps us continue planning, recording, editing and transcribing these regular podcasts – or in the case of next week's episode, will go towards renting some seriously ropey turn-of-the-noughties films. Chicago footwork is essential to the city's history of electronic dance music and culture. It was pioneered in the 1990s by dancers, DJs and producers like DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, DJ Clent, RP Boo and more on Chicago's South and West sides. And it's characterized by fast choppy vocal samples, interesting basslines and hi-hats and snares. Reset sits down with Litebulb, Steelo and P-Top of The Era Footwork Crew to learn more about the evolution of Chicago footwork and its continuing legacy. In September, the visionary electronic producer SOPHIE released what was promoted as her final album, three years after her tragic passing. And people had a lot of opinions on it – as they usually do with music that comes out after an artist's death, whether it's Tupac, Avicii, Lil Peep, DJ Rashad, Prince, or many, many others. There are moral and musical questions to consider. So this week, Kikelomo and Juba are joined by artist, curator and cultural commentator Christa Belle to talk through the complicated emotions posthumous releases inspire. ****LABEL/COLLECTIF**** Sdban ultra https://www.sdbanrecords.com/ *** INFOS *** Futuristic Brussels based four-piece ECHT! are set to release their sophomore album ‘Sink-Along' on the 5th May via the groove-obsessed Sdban Ultra label. Receiving critical acclaim from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6 Music) and Mixmag for their debut release ‘INWANE' (2021), ECHT! takes the best of Jonwayne, DJ Rashad, J Dilla, Ivy Lab, Tsuruda and Aphex Twin, resulting in an unrivalled sound. In a society geared almost exclusively toward the technological, ECHT! forges a different path, one that instead replaces the mechanical with the human. At the heart of their creative process made up of actual skin and bone, the influences of trap, bass music, jazz and hip-hop burst forth through their expert playing of instruments. ‘Sink-Along' showcases a rawer and more straight-forward approach than their debut. Whether on the bass-heavy opener 'Glide' or the beat-to-beat sounds of 'Cheesecake' and 'Bryan Brains', ECHT! confirms its taste for deep, dark beats pushed to the extreme. No one can remain indifferent. A more luminous universe is brought to the fore on the introspective ‘Vault-A' and 'Dawn In Duden' but at the core of ‘Sink-Along', the common denominator is a warm and organic groove, evident on the inventive 'Rouf-rouf' and 'Mtwk part2'. "For this album we wanted to make strong and opposite emotions coexist: a dark and intense apocalyptic tendency, and a life and dance impulse that runs through everything. A paradox that is reflected in the wordplay of the title 'Sink-Along'." Releasing their debut EP ‘DOUF' in 2019, the following year, ECHT! finished third in Red Bull Elektropedia's ‘Fresh on The Scene' category and the EP was nominated for ‘Best EP'. ECHT! released three sublime live studio sessions titled the BREWmixes in 2021, which received support from tastemakers including LEFTO, Worldwide FM and Belgian national radio station Studio Brussel (StuBru). Their debut album ‘INWANE' soon followed. Echt means ‘vrai de vrai' - ‘true' or ‘real' in brusseleir (Brabantian dialect of Brussels). Her most recent two records, 2021's ‘Painful Enlightenment' and this year's ‘Dark Humour', on the legendary label, Planet Mu, have seen her not only push the boundaries of her own sound but of footwork as a whole. It's safe to say then that we were thrilled to speak to this visionary producer, Chicago O.G. and one of our favourite artists. Over the course of this interview, Jana discusses her early years and getting into music at a young age via radio, the Chicago scene in the 90's, meeting and working alongside legends such as Gant-Man, DJ Rashad, DJ Deeon, & Paul Johnson and how the scene compares today. We then discuss her albums, ‘Painful Enlightenment' & ‘Dark Humour', going in depth on Jana's approach to production, sampling and pushing the boundaries of the footwork genre. Jana then shares highlights from her recent EU tour and her approach to performing live, before rounding up some of her favourite artists and inspirations, finishing with a peek into what the future holds for her! ---SUPPORT JANA RUSH:Bandcamp - https://jaru.bandcamp.com/musicSoundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/jaru-1Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/jana_rush/SUPPORT JANA'S FAVOURITE ARTISTS:DJ Orange Julius: https://djorangejulius.bandcamp.com/musicFoodman: https://foodman.bandcamp.comDJCOREY: https://djcoreybdh.bandcamp.comSUPPORT AWAKE ALL HOURS: www.patreon.com/awakeallhours

Big ups to Jana for this breathtaking mix! This was unexpected. Few months ago I announced I'd stop releasing mixes regularly in order to focus completely on composing and producing my own music. But the other day, outside my working hours, I don't know why I felt I'd do this new Eclectic Soul. One thing is certain : this mix is here because I got two friends sending me great music. Even though there are only three songs coming from them here – those were the impulse, as I start the mix with two of those three. At 38.33 I play one of my upcoming release for 2021. Hope you dig it. Makes me thing of St Germain and Café del Mar.In 2021 I'll be releasing one track per week. You can support this project by becoming a patron at patreon.com/costalsBy being a patron, you get the timestamped tracklists of all my mixes, exclusive ones and download them in high quality. That's the best way to support me and help me make more mixtapes and more music. I got the goal of reaching $600/month with Patreon as soon as possible. This will allow me to regain all my time, rent a 1-bedroom and pay my little monthly expenses. And just make LOADS of my best music as I dive into a deep state of relaxation (cuz no thinking about money).Episode link: costals.net/eclectic-soul-66From Geneva with love.

We discuss the evolution of bass music after the boom of dubstep, carving out a niche, management versus a personal relationship with an artist, and also building an underground scene in a small club, while fighting powerhouse venues.  We also get into the legacy of juke and footwork, Chicago, and DJ Rashad.  We wrap up the episode with some insight on how to handle loss of shows, and coping with this "new way" of life. Even if you can't contribute, we hope you'll tell a friend or two about it.This week on The Culture Journalist, we're taking a break from 2020—who doesn't need one?—and traveling back to a time in music and culture that we've been feeling a bit nostalgic for. We're talking about the halcyon days of 2013, a year that was full-to-bursting with exciting sounds from the underground, including DJ Rashad's Double Cup, Arca's mixtape &&&&&, and Deafheaven's Sunbather. It also felt like an unending onslaught of unprecedented Big Pop Moments, from Kanye West dismantling the avant-garde/pop divide with Yeezus, to Miley Cyrus sparking conversations about cultural appropriation with her hip-hop-inspired Bangerz, to Beyoncé reinventing the album cycle with the surprise-drop of her self-titled record in December. 2013 feels like another universe today (this was, after all, just the start of Obama's second term), but it also marked a sea change for the industry and music culture as a whole—one that this week's guest, veteran music journalist Larry Fitzmaurice, has been spending the past few months teasing apart in "The Year that Everything Changed," a serialized essay series for his excellent Last Donut of the Night Substack. On this week's episode, we reflect on 2013 as a year that the Internet would transform every aspect of music as we knew it, from the way it sounded, to how it was released, to the media's role in covering it.Read more by Larry: Last Donut of the Night Tame Impala, Chillwave, and Other Dispatches from the Vibe Generation19 Thoughts on Radiohead's In RainbowsWe've Got a File on You: Thurston MooreFollow Larry on Twitter. Wir gehen mal in die Zukunft. Swuuuusch. Daraufhin gründete er BTTB - Back To The Basics, ebenfalls im Jahre 1992.
