The Sony Pictures hack in 2014 by the North Korean Lazarus Group was a seminal event both in Hollywood and in the security community, bringing to light the capabilities and ambitions of North Korean attackers and showing the damage a leak of sensitive data can be. Brian Raftery joins Dennis Fisher to discuss his new Ringer podcast, The Hollywood Hack, that digs deep into the incident, its repercussions in Hollywood, and how it helped set the tone for how companies handle public data leaks.
10 years ago, in response to the upcoming release of the satirical movie "The Interview," Sony Pictures Studios was hacked by North Korea. North Korea was angry about the film's portrayal of their leader, Kim Jong Un. The hack leaked emails, Social Security numbers, and company data, which revealed racism, misogyny, and general misbehavior within Hollywood. A new podcast from The Ringer dives into the legacy of this story a decade later. Host Brian Raftery joins us to discuss The Hollywood Hack.
Matt is joined by podcaster and journalist Brian Raftery to talk about the 10-year anniversary of the infamous Sony hack, how it changed the perception of Hollywood, how it affected the way villains are portrayed in movies, if North Korea was really to blame, and if this could this happen again (03:08). Matt finishes the show with an opening-weekend box office prediction for ‘Alien: Romulus' (27:31). The hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014 was one of the most bizarre crimes of the decade. Instead of demanding money, the hackers threatened a terrorist attack on the USA if Sony didn't cancel the release of the film 'The Interview,' a comedy about two bumbling journalists who travel to North Korea and attempt to assassinate the country's Supreme Leader. The release went forward anyway, and thankfully, the threats came to nothing. Enjoy the terrible English in the hackers' written threats against 'The Sony,' and Michele's terrible attempts at reading them aloud in a North Korean accent.Resources for this episode:https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30512032https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/10/the-untold-story-of-the-sony-hackhttps://www.vox.com/2015/1/20/18089084/sony-hack-north-koreahttps://www.vox.com/2014/12/16/7403437/sony-hacks-threatshttps://www.amnesty.org.uk/north-koreahttps://www.operationblockbuster.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Operation-Blockbuster-Report.pdfhttps://www.mandiant.com/resources/apt38-details-on-new-north-korean-regime-backed-threat-grouphttps://www.theverge.com/2018/9/6/17826722/north-korea-sony-hack-wannacry-chargeshttps://www.jhuapl.edu/Content/documents/SonyNightmareBeforeChristmas.pdfhttps://www.mitnicksecurity.com/in-the-news/sony-hack-was-not-all-that-sophisticated-cybersecurity-experts-sayhttps://www.jhuapl.edu/Content/documents/SonyNightmareBeforeChristmas.pdfhttps://www.vox.com/2015/4/21/11561700/sony-hack-was-not-an-inside-job-says-security-expert-kevin-mandiahttps://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/10/the-untold-story-of-the-sony-hackhttps://thinkst.com/ts/free/ThinkstScapes-2014-AH4-Trial.pdfhttps://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/12/unprecedented-cyberattack-no-excuse-for-sony-breach-pros-say/https://www.thewrap.com/president-obama-sony-made-a-mistake-in-canceling-the-interview/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4xjJbEwJsgSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/howhackshappen)

The cyber attack on Sony Pictures was so complete and so destructive that one security expert says the company should disconnect from the Internet. Is it the work of North Korea? Who else has the motive? What's the message about the risk to other networks that major private companies now depend on?
No major surprises with Golden Globe nominations this year, but big snubs include Angelina Jolie's Unbroken and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. On the TV side, the nominated comedies are more serious shows. Plus, the leaks from the hack at Sony continue to wreak havoc.
An attack by hackers on Sony Pictures has leaked movies online, revealed personal employee data like salaries and passwords and left the company paralyzed, unable to access email and voicemails.
