The Sony Pictures hack in 2014 by the North Korean Lazarus Group was a seminal event both in Hollywood and in the security community, bringing to light the capabilities and ambitions of North Korean attackers and showing the damage a leak of sensitive data can be. Brian Raftery joins Dennis Fisher to discuss his new Ringer podcast, The Hollywood Hack, that digs deep into the incident, its repercussions in Hollywood, and how it helped set the tone for how companies handle public data leaks.
10 years ago, in response to the upcoming release of the satirical movie "The Interview," Sony Pictures Studios was hacked by North Korea. North Korea was angry about the film's portrayal of their leader, Kim Jong Un. The hack leaked emails, Social Security numbers, and company data, which revealed racism, misogyny, and general misbehavior within Hollywood. A new podcast from The Ringer dives into the legacy of this story a decade later. Host Brian Raftery joins us to discuss The Hollywood Hack.
Matt is joined by podcaster and journalist Brian Raftery to talk about the 10-year anniversary of the infamous Sony hack, how it changed the perception of Hollywood, how it affected the way villains are portrayed in movies, if North Korea was really to blame, and if this could this happen again (03:08). Matt finishes the show with an opening-weekend box office prediction for ‘Alien: Romulus' (27:31). The hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014 was one of the most bizarre crimes of the decade. Instead of demanding money, the hackers threatened a terrorist attack on the USA if Sony didn't cancel the release of the film 'The Interview,' a comedy about two bumbling journalists who travel to North Korea and attempt to assassinate the country's Supreme Leader. The release went forward anyway, and thankfully, the threats came to nothing. Enjoy the terrible English in the hackers' written threats against 'The Sony,' and Michele's terrible attempts at reading them aloud in a North Korean accent.Resources for this episode:https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-30512032https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/10/the-untold-story-of-the-sony-hackhttps://www.vox.com/2015/1/20/18089084/sony-hack-north-koreahttps://www.vox.com/2014/12/16/7403437/sony-hacks-threatshttps://www.amnesty.org.uk/north-koreahttps://www.operationblockbuster.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Operation-Blockbuster-Report.pdfhttps://www.mandiant.com/resources/apt38-details-on-new-north-korean-regime-backed-threat-grouphttps://www.theverge.com/2018/9/6/17826722/north-korea-sony-hack-wannacry-chargeshttps://www.jhuapl.edu/Content/documents/SonyNightmareBeforeChristmas.pdfhttps://www.mitnicksecurity.com/in-the-news/sony-hack-was-not-all-that-sophisticated-cybersecurity-experts-sayhttps://www.jhuapl.edu/Content/documents/SonyNightmareBeforeChristmas.pdfhttps://www.vox.com/2015/4/21/11561700/sony-hack-was-not-an-inside-job-says-security-expert-kevin-mandiahttps://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/10/the-untold-story-of-the-sony-hackhttps://thinkst.com/ts/free/ThinkstScapes-2014-AH4-Trial.pdfhttps://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/12/unprecedented-cyberattack-no-excuse-for-sony-breach-pros-say/https://www.thewrap.com/president-obama-sony-made-a-mistake-in-canceling-the-interview/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4xjJbEwJsgSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/howhackshappen)

Ethan Brundeen from the Heavy Meddle podcast returns to help Kenny and Ben properly contextualize the cultural phenomenon that was this year's winner: The Fault in Our Stars, which beat out the a wave of of superhero movies (The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and Seth Rogen comedies (The Interview and Neighbors) to take home the Golden Popcorn. But how good is that kiss really? And why does Ethan keep forgetting the name of the movie he came on to talk about? The gang tries to get to the bottom of these questions while also touching on cancer, the big kiss at the Anne Frank House, Sony's failed attempt at a Spider-Man cinematic universe, the Sony Hack, the comic brilliance of Rose Byrne, the general chasteness of Marvel movies, and more! You'll definitely want to hear this one!
In late 2014, hackers stole an enormous amount of information from Sony Pictures, then wiped out thousands of computers and hundreds of servers. Bill Nelson is the CEO of Global Resilience Federation (GRF). Previously, Nelson was the President and CEO of the Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center (FS-ISAC). In his 12 years, Nelson led FS-ISAC in its response to major cyber and physical threats and vulnerabilities that affected the financial services industry, including partnering with Microsoft to take down four major botnet infrastructures. He was also responsible for creating the Sector Services Division of FS-ISAC, which was established to assist other sectors and became the genesis for launching Global Resilience Federation. Nelson was named the fifth most influential person in the field of financial-information security by the publication Bank Info Security and he also received the prestigious RSA Award for Excellence in Information Security. Before joining FS-ISAC, Nelson was the Executive Vice President of NACHA, the electronic payments association, where he oversaw the development of the ACH Network into one of the largest electronic payment systems in the world, processing nearly 14 billion payments by the time he transitioned to FS-ISAC. In this podcast with Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent, Bill shares his insights on the cyber threat intelligence information sharing landscape during the period when he was the President and CEO of FS-ISAC and how incidents such as the Sony Hack in 2014 and the Central Bank of Bangladesh influenced the ways organisations came to view information sharing. He also discusses how recent cyber incidents in operational technology have matured the conversations between public and private sectors, and why the focus on recovery is critical. Well do we have a surprise for you all this week, oh my goodness, you are getting a bumper edition with a special guest appearance. Now if I was nasty I would just leave it at that, but cliffhangers lead to binge watching an entire season normally. So, in a sense of harmonious respect we are only building the tension with this prattle, it is less irritating apparently. Honestly though don’t you just hate it when those jokers asking questions on trivia shows drag it out then go to a commercial break? We’ll be right back after this message….Okay, so down to business, first up is our special guest Shaun from Comics2Movies fresh back from San Diego Comic-Con… Yep and he has some awesome news for us also. Who did he meet, what did he do, what has he got planned for us? You will need to listen in to find out.Next up we have the Professor with news about a monumental stuff up due to ambiguity in the terms of a contract from Valve relating to Steam. Yep, due to some over sight or sheer stupidity a detected vulnerability to Steam was ignored and the researchers involved were treated pretty badly. Which let’s face it is kind of the dumbest thing you can do right. But if you would like to know more we have it, and you will laugh at some of the comments involved in this topic. We did. Then we have Buck with the development of a new process of welding ceramics that has major implications for all kind of endeavors. This process means that the component technologies for everything ranging from pace makers to an endless variety of circuitry can now be ceramic. This is espically awesome, this is another of those ground breaking moments that might slip by unnoticed by some people. But the changes that will result from this in years to come will be immense. Then we have the DJ to talk about the reboot of G.I.Joe to help cash in further on an already established brand, or is it? That is a question that arises, similar to the recent reboot of Ghost In The Shell: Arise. Like what we did there, cool huh, and no the Professor didn’t write that Segway, honestly. But this is certainly a moment when having to crusty old blokes on the show is interesting. We round out with the usual shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. As always take care of yourselves, look out for each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Valve turning away researcher - https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/08/valve-says-turning-away-researcher-reporting-steam-vulnerability-was-a-mistake/Lasers can weld ceramics - https://www.technology.org/2019/08/26/lasers-can-weld-ceramics-without-a-furnace/G.I Joe comics relaunch - https://www.bleedingcool.com/2019/08/25/hasbro-vp-promises-new-gi-joe-series-wont-replace-larry-hamas-real-american-hero/Games currently playingBuck– Albion Online - https://albiononline.com/en/homeProfessor– Rainbow Six Siege - https://rainbow6.ubisoft.com/siege/en-us/home/index.aspxDJ– Warframe - https://www.warframe.com/landingOther topics discussedRobert Kirkman (The Walking Dead creator)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_KirkmanTitans crew member killed during rehearsal- https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/titans-death-crew-member-dies-car-stunt-netflix-dc-universe-a9011826.htmlMayans M.C. cast- J. An exposé by Fortune magazine offers new revelations on the hack attack on Sony studios at the end of 2014. A six-month investigation by Peter Elkind found that security at Sony was lax and that Sony executives had been warned multiple times before the hack occurred.

In the past if someone wanted to rob you they would buy a knife. They would wait in a dark alley and when you passed by they would stick you up. With the invention of the locomotive the same thief was able to scale his business by robbing hundreds during a train heist. Fast forward to last year December. 1 out of every 3 Americans were exposed to the Target data breach last year. Millions of people had money and personal information stolen. With the recent SONY hack we are looking at the possibility of nation states versus nation states in a cyber warfare setting. Today we were joined today by President of CMIT Solutions / Northwest Houston Suburbs, Camille Hamilton Camille Hamilton, Owner of CMIT Solutions/Northwest Houston Suburbs and has over twenty-nine years experience in the Information Technology industry. North Korea's hack attack on SONY corp causes SONY to pull film The Interview starring Seth Rogan and James Franco (and threats to theatres should the film the released this weekend as scheduled). The film had depicted the assassination of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. North Korea denies the attack while U.S. President Obama declares the U.S. will respond proportionately at a time of its choosing. Now North Korea demands the U.S. allow it to participate in any investigation of the hack attack and if the United States fails to do so there will be "consequences." Meanwhile the U.S. is asking China for its cooperation. Guests: David Fraser, McInness Cooper, Halifax, N.S. One of the world's foremost internet security lawyers. Murray Pomerance, Professor. Sony Hack, Christmas Gadgets The post Chris Voss Podcast 76 Sony Hack, GoPro 4 appeared first on Chris Voss Official Website.
The cyber attack on Sony Pictures was so complete and so destructive that one security expert says the company should disconnect from the Internet. Is it the work of North Korea? Who else has the motive? What's the message about the risk to other networks that major private companies now depend on?
No major surprises with Golden Globe nominations this year, but big snubs include Angelina Jolie's Unbroken and Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. On the TV side, the nominated comedies are more serious shows. Plus, the leaks from the hack at Sony continue to wreak havoc.
An attack by hackers on Sony Pictures has leaked movies online, revealed personal employee data like salaries and passwords and left the company paralyzed, unable to access email and voicemails.
