In this 12th episode of the ECM podcast we're joined by the acclaimed American guitarist and long-time ECM recording artist Steve Tibbetts, whose discography-spanning anthology „Hellbound Train“ was released in July 2022. The double album comprises music from eight albums recorded over 40 years, from as early as his debut for the label, Northern Song, from 1982. Steve explains the nature of this double-disc set and talks about his collaborators over the years, his influences as well as the tuning and sampling techniques that make his guitar playing so unique.

The name “Ani Choying” symbolizes charity, humility and empathy. She is a Nepalese Buddhist nun and musician, internationally renowned for bringing many Tibetan Buddhist chants and feast songs to mainstream audiences. Her musical career began in 1994 when U.S. guitarist Steve Tibbetts during a visit to Nepal met Ani Choying and listened to her chanting. He was immediately impressed with her singing talents and eventually managed to record it on a cassette recorder in a small shrine room. The result was a collaborative album Cho, which was released in 1997. Ani Choying has been involved in several humanitarian works. She has been recently appointed as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to Nepal. She has come a long way from there and has today become a role model for women’s empowerment in Nepal as well as across Asia. live at https://www.facebook.com/thedeepeshshowhttps://www.youtube.com/thedeepeshshowhttp://www.twitter.com/thedeepeshshowPodcastswww.thedeepeshshow.com#AniChoyingDrolma #TheDeepeshShow #NepaliPodcast #aeglobal #liveinterview #Giftmandu

In this episode, we celebrate the guitar and highlight some of our favorite guitarists. It’s not only through epic guitar solos and technical skill that make you a great guitarist, instead it’s about creating a mood and a feeling through your instrument. The guitarists featured in this episode have that skill and they really can pull some spellbinding guitar wizard tricks out of their hats. Sunday mornings in summer...put on some coffee even though the temps are already climbing. Sunday mornings in summer...are spent on the deck with the paper & the birds. Sunday mornings in summer...slow motion start to a slow motion day. This is the third in my unplanned Sunday morning music series. I hadn't intended to more than one of these mixes but the first was so popular on Mixcloud that I couldn't resist doing more. I was amazed at how many listens it got and to be honest, I liked that popularity, so I became a bit of a ratings whore & went back to that same well again. As with the others in this series, this mix is a collection of instrumentals, acoustic tunes, jazz & other oddballs. I am happy to have squeezed in the tune, The Farther Away I Am, from Daryl Hall. Yes that's Daryl Hall of Hall and Oates. It's from a 1980 solo album he did that was produced by Robert Fripp, thereby assuring it would be a commercial bomb. The album was kind hit & miss but I've always loved that song. Other favs in the mix are the ones by Sun Kil Moon & Keola Beamer and of course the Colin Meloy cover which I stole as the title for volume 3 in this series. I know the Beamer tune borders on new age. But I think this cut doesn't go over the edge into new age crap. It just has this nice breezy feel which perfect for sitting on the deck with the sun on your face. Enjoy. It still hasn't snowed on the east coast of the US. The temperature does dip below 30, but then there are days when it's over 50 degrees, and the sun is blaring into my studio, its warmth so strong I still haven’t turned on the heat. The trees have shed their withered leaves, but the earth is too warm for the flurries to stay. This latest mix from Dave Michuda is perfect for this morning. Titled Illusions of Autumn, the selector behind low light mixes takes you on an eclectic trip through Arve Henriksen, Daniel Lanois, Harold Budd, Steve Tibbetts, Maps and Diagrams and more... For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
These are songs that conjure up images of wind blown landscapes, tumbleweeds, sunbleached rocks, dusty roads and heat waves rising off the ground. Of course most of the music in this mix has an ambient/atmospheric feel. I remember the first time I heard Daniel Lanois' use of slide guitar on "Apollo - Atmospheres & Soundtracks", I hated it. I guess I thought of the slide guitar as too close to "country music" which I definitely hated. Well over the years I've come around on the slide guitar, I love it now. I'm still not a big country music fan, though I do have a ton of Johnny Cash recordings. I've come to appreciate the lonely, melancholy feel that can be expressed through twangy, dusty western music. Of course the ultimate in great ambient twang is Ry Cooder's "Paris, TX" soundtrack. That makes an appearance in this mix along with standbys like Lanois, Steve Roach & A Small Good Thing. I was happy to sneak in a piano tune, "Alice & twins" by Japancakes. It just sort of fit with the overall feel & then the slide guitar comes in to make it even more "dusty". Whether it's the twang of an acoustic guitar, the wail of a harmonica or the ethereal sound of a slide guitar, this mix will drop you off on an abandoned rail line in the middle of nowhere.
